I'm on the fence on this.
I like the ability to swap out battery packs or plug in, means I can remain wireless without having a cable for my cat to play with.
However I do think they should come supplied!

I've had every battery pack fail on me, I would cry if I had to throw out my controller every time that happened. But if they came with one in the box that would be awesome.

had nothing but trouble with the cheap ones, battery didn't last, couldn't get the headset to work. used official batteries, everything works dandy

I just use Panasonic Batteries 10 for 99p in Home Bargains, last for 20 hours for a pair for me

Just buy some rechargeable AA batteries instead.

I dislike these kits immensely, I have two of the official ones and I can never rely on them, sometimes I'll take them off charge and they haven't charged at all, other times they've charged but only last a few hours.
Gave up with them in the end and just got some AA and a 1 hour charger, always keep two fully charged batteries in the second pad so I'm not fumbling around with batteries when it dies in the middle of an online game.
Far prefer the Dualshock system though, I just put my controller back in the Sony dock when I'm done with it, nice and simple no messing around ever. Orange lightbar comes on so you know it's charging up properly.

The cables break very easy on these, its only a micro USB cable, but the MS ones are pretty weak..
as for unofficials off eBay or Amazon, i've had them in the past and they fail after a few months and the capacity is also very low in comparison and only give you about 7-8 hours per charge.
Technology is massively overdue advancements in battery technology..
Opening post
EDIT: Sod the Game deal - found it cheaper at Base for £15.99
RRP £19.99
