The Nintendo Classic Mini: NES Controller can also be used to play Virtual Console NES games on a Wii U,or Wiiconsole. Simply connect it to a Wii Remote controller to make the experience that much more authentic. Players needn’t worry about losing any hard-earned progress either as each game has multiple suspend points, allowing them to start where they left off at a later time, no passwords needed.

This is gonna be the same as my retro DVD purchases. Monkey, Incredible Hulk, Knight Rider, Magnum PI, etc. Seems a great idea, but after you've played a couple of games and realised just how bad they are now, you'll put it away in the cupboard and never get it out again.
Have played a few of these on the VC and the only games (imo) worth playing again are SMB and SMB3.
Having said that, I'll probably get one :disappointed: cos it looks so... dinky!!

I want this and I don't want this, I can feel myself arguing with myself for months over this.
Many of these games stand the test of time as they are nothing like modern games and thus don't even feel in the same arena. They are fun and addictive.
I still have my N64 and GameCube hooked up and have a mega drive away but would love a nes and snes but know I won't free up time to play them...
I want this though.
No I don't...

It's funny how people class a game that's years old being on digital download and £7.99 a deal because RRP is set at 49.99 and then question this is a deal coz it's RRP but RRP could be a good price and the item could be limited numbers and snapped up. This seems a good price to me.

If this is 2A and the charger is under powered, then the console will likely just not work/ power up and should not cause damage. Why would it go bang? It's not even likely to trip the fuse.

Also soft modding a wii is an excellent cheaper option for emulation with authentic pads on a modern TV. The component cable outputs 720p and they cost £20 in cash converters/cex.

I have a retro freak that cost me £160 but it is pure retro bless and can use all original controllers. At £50 this pales in comparison unfortunately. Cool as for sure but this is like releasing a vhs player for nostalgia and a waste. Nintendo should have made their own clone console encompassing nes, snes and 64 games.

Sorry but Kinda Have To Point Out To You, that if this console is 2A and you plug in a 1.2A, absolutely nothing will happen.
It certainly wouldn't go bang! It seems you don't know about amps or voltage either.
In your example, 1.2A just wouldn't be enough current for the console, therefore it just simply wouldn't work.
If you put the wrong Voltage on the other hand...

Interesting that they preface Nintendo Entertainment System with "Nintendo Classic Mini"....as that does make it sound like it's going to be a range of systems based on their old machines. A SNES and N64 seem quite likely...perhaps we might even see a Gameboy or GBA at some point as well.

I've got an ntsc and pal nes.. with a late 4:3 Sony Trinitron crt.. and a super Famicom, Japanese Megadrive mk1, pc engine and two Dreamcasts.. (still no Goldeneye).

Be interested to know what this outputs. I suspect it is a system on a chip, not an emulator. Plenty of good pseudo nes consoles that will play original carts.

Stingy gits, throw in a bloody adapter already, they probably cost them a £1 if that. It's not like they don't charge us enough to thrown one in.
Besides that, I really want one, hopefully it's not a poor emulated console and the games all run without issue.
This will probably outsell the Wii U this Chrismas. In fact I wouldn't be surprised if it's sold out and is selling on Ebay for over £100.

Considering the graphics never looked that great on a CRT screen to begin with, it must look horrendous on a large HD/4K screen. I know when I plug my Dreamcast into my 39" FHD TV it looks like I'm playing a Sega Master System game.
(Cue all the "it's not about the graphics, it's about the gameplay..." retorts) If that's the case, why are we now paying for new games consoles each year? Why are top end PC graphics cards costing £600+ ?

i have quite enough devices plugged into my telly that can run emulators and i have several pads for, £50 for something that initially sounds great but won't ever be updated/expanded seems a poor deal - you can buy a wii and mod it (or even buy most of the games on virtual console) for less.

Doesnt play NES game carts, connect to internet or physical media.
Our questions and Nintendo’s answers:
Will the mini-NES be able to connect to the internet?
No. The console is a standalone device, so it cannot connect to the internet or any external storage devices. The game lineup was chosen to provide a diverse mix of popular and recognisable NES games that appeal to a wide variety of players. Everyone should be able to find multiple games to enjoy.
On the same note: does Nintendo plan to sell other NES games for the mini-NES beyond the 30 it comes preloaded with?
No. The console is a standalone device, so it cannot connect to the internet or any external storage devices. The 30 games included with the system were chosen to provide a wide variety of top-quality, long-lasting game-play experiences.
Are there plans for other mini-consoles, like a mini-SNES or mini-N64?
We have nothing to announce at this time.
Just because people have been asking: safe to say it can’t play old cartridges, right? (Based on the image it looks like an NES cartridge would have around the same width as the entire console.) Does it open up at all?
The console does not use physical media and therefore the Chamber Lid does not open.

It will only not go bang if it goes sizzle and overheats or has a thermal cut out. Or it 'may' not do anything or seem to do anything -but give it time and that PSU will overheat unless it has protection.
Adding protection costs money ans how many cheap imported PSU's on eBay etc. do you think went that extra mile?
It is simple, the device will tax an under powered PSU to its maximum, if it needs to, and that will put it beyond operating conditions.
It used to be common for people to buy a new graphics card and then buy a new PSU after getting a few hours to a weeks gaming out their old one. Because the old PSU was being taxed too heavy and was cheap.
There are variables and exceptions to the rule, but generally I would say you are on your way to causing a fire or getting someone else to.
As for the voltage, we are pretty safe here as USB has a standard 5v.

It uses the classic controller port from the Nintendo Wii (the one on the bottom of the WiiMote), you can connect Wii Classic Controllers to the Mini NES, or you can use the Mini NES controller on Wii Virtual Console games. You can't plug it directly into your PC, but you can buy adaptors.

Nar £40 tops if you want to wait a week, hoping for a N64 version eventually
If this thing could take the original cartridges, I'd buy it in a heartbeat. A NES with a HD port is dreamy. As it is, there's too many games I wanna play that aren't included on the list. So, so many classics that can't be played. Still a cool little thing for parties, I guess.
LOL you can't add more games. Pointless system. I'd rather stick to my Retron 5 LOL

oh no, just looked again no card slots for modding potential and no internets? what a shame. I think they will sell though obvs so trying to get one on the run up to christmas might be tough of you don't pre order. Id bite at £35 but might hold out for the 100% happening mini snes.
So many great games not included on the mini nes though? why didn't they make it say 50. Its not like they take up much space. Classic ninty, 9/10 for a great idea 2/10 for implementation.

If you're planning to go legit, then this is a good deal. Even if you disregard the console itself, the value of the included games is a lot cheaper than buying them on the Virtual Console, etc. Unfortunately, many people would prefer to be able to download ROMs and play them for next to nothing. If that's your poison, then you could buy the controller separately, grab a USB adaptor, plug it into just about any PC and play games via an emulator.

This was bugging me heavily so I went and got a source.
I cannot stress enough a) the irresponsibility of Nintendo on its part by not supplying a PSU and b) to use a proper power supply for this.
Some just go pop with no real event. Some bleed cap juice. Some explode as people try to remove them and that causes things like lost fingers, as well as burns ... but those aren't the worst.
The worst are the ones that make you think everything is ok, when it is not. Those are the ones people die from, silent killers to start with, until they burn the house down.
There you are, all snug in bed when it suddenly combusts ... game over. If you are lucky it will go bang first and wake you up.
Edit:
Maybe in the start I should have done what everyone else does, though it turns straight into a 'whose got the biggest'.
Well, I'm 39, have a credit in physics, build lab PSU's out of broken PC PSU's. I build circuits, I mod and I use Raspberry Pi, Arduino and ATMega MPU's.
I've had my own personal cloud for longer than it's been referred to as the cloud. In 2005 or 2008 I wrote the Ubuntu tutorial on how to have a remote NAS with torrent downloader, media streamer etc. etc. In 2002 I dropped out of getting my doctorate in Computer Science because of gastro-paresis and multiple sclerosis.
Now, while none of that qualifies me and I have never been a professional at any of these subjects it does give me expert knowledge.
I think perhaps, maybe, I know just a little about voltage, amps, wattage and stuff.
I think what has happened with some people is they the likes of LED's work but not the whole scope.

I have 8 Wii's of which 2 are Platinum Connection Ambassador consoles and 1 that is Gold, so have legally downloaded over 120 free Nes, Snes and N64 titles on each console - and I have hardly played any of them. In fact, the Wii's have not even been powered on for over a year so I didn't even realise BBC iPlayer had been ceased.
So why am I still thinking of buying one of these ???

That's why it will look awful. Composite looks bad on CRT. On an LCD or Plasma, looks like vomit. At the very least you need RGB Scart to get a decent picture. If you have a VGA port on your TV, do yourself a favour, and get a VGA box. You will be very pleasantly surprised by how good the Dreamcast's native picture output is.

I used to have a NES and nostalgia aside i wouldnt buy this. A lot of the games from that generation of consoles dont really hold up now. A SNES or Megadrive emulator is your best bet- great selections of games (many of them remakes/sequels of NES/master system) with decent graphics as well.
Spasho
18 Jul 16#213
I agree that one needs to be selective about which games to play from the 8bit era but there are a lot of great titles to play. Also, after discovering that there's much better ports of 16bit games on arcade (MAME) it made me look at them differently now.
They're good but can't top the arcade versions, well, except for Turtles in Time and such.

Yeah. If you have an emulator then you pretty much don't need one of these. (I use a NES emulator and NES emulator on my Wii) Anyhow, some people might just want it because it's legitimate merchandise. All things considered though, apart from buying a NES and finding older games, this is the best value you can find for an actual legal product which can supply those games.
Not everyone's cup of tea, but there are gonna be some who would like it.

Have played a few of these on the VC and the only games (imo) worth playing again are SMB and SMB3.
Having said that, I'll probably get one :disappointed: cos it looks so... dinky!!
Argh
No CLUE.
A deal is in the eye of the buyer
What if this is 2A and their charger is only 1.2A?
(the charger goes bang)
You do know about amps, voltage and watts and stuff ... right?
Kinda have to point that out to people.

It's worth hunting. I got the SNES version for around £17 and stays charged for ages! "John SNES" app works flawlessly for me. Just my ten penneth! NES apps easily available too.

This is ****.
This was even before my time who would want to play this crap?
It certainly wouldn't go bang! It seems you don't know about amps or voltage either.
In your example, 1.2A just wouldn't be enough current for the console, therefore it just simply wouldn't work.
If you put the wrong Voltage on the other hand...
So you're saying kids are better off playing on smartphones, FIFA, CoD and GTAs.
I'll be grabbing one of these though, can remember paying £50 for Super Mario 3 on release day, what a game!
Is that nostalgic enough?
Be interested to know what this outputs. I suspect it is a system on a chip, not an emulator. Plenty of good pseudo nes consoles that will play original carts.
Besides that, I really want one, hopefully it's not a poor emulated console and the games all run without issue.
This will probably outsell the Wii U this Chrismas. In fact I wouldn't be surprised if it's sold out and is selling on Ebay for over £100.
(Cue all the "it's not about the graphics, it's about the gameplay..." retorts) If that's the case, why are we now paying for new games consoles each year? Why are top end PC graphics cards costing £600+ ?
If this has good build quality and works as intended then v good value.
All NES games emulated, cheaper and can emulate other platforms too like SNES aswell as all SNES games.
i have quite enough devices plugged into my telly that can run emulators and i have several pads for, £50 for something that initially sounds great but won't ever be updated/expanded seems a poor deal - you can buy a wii and mod it (or even buy most of the games on virtual console) for less.
Pity it wasn't a SNES & NES Backwards compatibility.
Cos the future is better!
Graphics were awful on a large flatscreen ( and couldn't be bothered digging out a CRT from the attic) but after about 10 minutes that was forgotten about and we relived our youth for a while until mum told us to go to bed.
That's the last time Mum gets invited for Chistmas dinner at ours.
Congratulations.
Looks great to me, and official hardware despite probable emulation happening.
https://www.engadget.com/2016/07/14/nintendo-classic-mini-games/
But I'm going to buy one for purely nostalgic reasons.
I think I feel a tear forming.
I'll get this. Does anyone know if the Mini NES controller is USB and could be used on a computer
The console does not use physical media and therefore the Chamber Lid does not open.
still getting it tho. yeah i can get nes games for free if i really wanted... but this looks cool.
