Some utter **** being talked about the 5x on here. Mostly from people who I bet have never even used one, let alone owned one for any length on time.

I've had mine since launch day and it's been utterly faultless. Camera is superb, supremely quick, and the battery last well over a day for me. That's with Google play music in the car via Bluetooth too and from work, bit of surfing, normal Facebook, twitter usage, even a bit of Pokemon Go  On the whole it's been a pleasure to use.

Same, just like my Nexus 5 but newer and better in every way...other than no wireless charging. Loving the Android N beta too - 25 cats and counting

The second one I got for my missus had a SIM tray that wouldn't open out of the box so had to swap that for another but otherwise can't fault them.

23 Jul 16 2 #9
No they're not, they a few of the more common problems experienced by a small number of owners. The SIM problem is usually associated with using a cut down micro SIM, these phones don't cope well with the extra thickness over a proper nano.

il agree to disagree, as i know plenty of people now with these. LG's handsets are usually really good and these are the handsets Google use for pure Android without any skins, launchers or unnecessary complications. I personally have just snapped this handset up after a Samsung Galaxy and im so relieved. It really is excellent. However everybody has there own preferences, its what keeps the world interesting.

The Nexus 5 2016 is due soon now. Worth waiting for in my opinion, particular if - like I've heard - its a 5" phone as opposed to the more phablet-like Nexus 5x.

I'd like to know where like apple they gather there cost for extra memory! you can by a 16gb memory card for £5!!
4Real2016 to dannycouzens7
23 Jul 16 #20
Try running an operating system on a memory card and see how long it lasts, good memory that can handle constant high read writes is still relatively expensive.

Even Marshmallow with its adoptable storage is an experiment, and they had to optimise that to try and keep read writes as low possible.

From what I've read about the Nexus 5X most people find it quick and smooth to use to begin with, but after a few months it starts becoming sluggish. That and the battery is pretty poop. If the phone didn't have these issues I think this would be a steal.

4Real2016
23 Jul 16 1 #29
You compared the price of internal memory to the price of a memory card, they are designed for completely different things, there's a reason one is cheaper than the other.

You clearly didn't understand a word I wrote.

I have the 32GB version of this phone (for a good few months now) and I cannot fault it. I'm on the N beta now and battery life is excellent. My GF has the same phone running stock and hers works great. She was an iPhone user before and has no complaints. If there was an issue she would say.
If you are in the market for the 5X this is a great deal.
I'm not going to comment on whether there are better handsets available. As a 5X owner, I can recommend it though.

go with the oneplus3. I had the 5x, although it had great performance and camera, they battery was aweful. I am a low to meduim user, whole would surf the web and maybe do 1hr of calls but i could not get more than a half a days usage. Screen On Time was about 3hr at most, so gave it back and got a oneplus3. Granted I paid £100 more but its a excellent phone. Looks really premium and battery life is super, which i get between 5.5hr and 6.5hrs SOT and this is with WiFI and Mobile data on (4G). Dash charging is great which within 30min of charging i charges upto 60% of the battery. Cant recommend it enough and once ordered arrived within 4days.

Had a 5x since release date and never had any of these so called "common problems".

As far as comparing it to a oneplus 3 lol, has anyone actually used both? I ordered the oneplus 3 and used it for two days then it went back. Hardware is good, screen is good, but the software is terrible, bugs all over, and very very poor support.

The 5x is Googles "current phone" until newer version in October, and it will continue to get Android updates for a couple if years yet.

I used my 8gb Moto G every day and never ran out of storage. This Nexus has 16GB and there's also a 32GB variant.

As long as you make use of cloud storage it's quite unlikely that you'll run out of space with this. And even without cloud storage you'll still be fine if you're a light/moderate user.

That shows how out of touch you are, no need for big storage on any device any more, other than the cloud servers, given what Google provide for no extra cost and fully integrate into the android experience.

Everything I want access to is instantly available on virtually any device on the planet. Why carry all that about for the one time in a blue moon you don't have web access and that is usually negated with a bit of forethought.

It depends what you want on your phone. If you wish to put music on there at a decent bit rate - not having to be reliant on streaming, considering the general quality of most free services and the data it uses - then an SD card slot is pretty important.

I'm sure for some 16gb is enough, but for me it would be insufficient.

After my Nexus 5 started to give up on me the obvious purchase would have been this 5x, yet one thing and one thing alone stopped me...ergonomics. Yes, this phone is 'only' 5.2 inch, but it's made to feel a lot bigger. Gutted. I instead plumped for the Moto X 2014, still 5.2 inch but made to feel a lot more comfortable for 1 handed usage. Missing (badly) those instant Android updates mind you.

ESXi happily runs from any class 10 SDCard...I've deployed hundreds of servers with the OS running on memory cards (and even cheap USB2 memory sticks before blades had SD Card slots)

The real reason that phone memory is expensive is purely down to manufacturers wanting to have the option to sell the handsets with tiered pricing for storage levels.

yes the onboard flash storage is faster and better quality but not to the level that justifies the huge price premium. The real answer is because they can make more profit this way.

http://www.techtimes.com/articles/111225/20151127/nexus-5x-performance-issues-users-complain-of-lagging-caused-by-encryption-camera-and-throttling.htm

You can check yourself using cpu-z, run a game for 2-3 minutes and check the clock speeds, then run a game for 8 minutes and check again, cores #5 and #6 will be disabled.

It's still great and you will find it hard to beat the value.

I picked one of these up last week to replace my N5 and I've experienced no issues at all. It's a bit bigger and heavier than the N5, but it's more responsive and the screen is fantastic IMO. Quite a few 'storage snobs' on here. You'll know them by the way they comment on every 16GB device with '16GB in 2016?!' Or 'nice phone but no SD', as if literally everyone has the same storage requirements as them - because everyone stores their entire music collection in a lossless format along with every photo and video they've ever taken, right? You know...just in case you need them.

What if you're on a train or a plane or you don't have unlimited data?
b1g1an
25 Jul 16 #82
This is the thing, everyone can have everything with them at all times 'just in case', you just don't need massive internal storage to do that.

2Gb of ram won't be enough within five minutes of ownership is also thrown about in a similar vain, however, one of the features of Android N is that compiled apps are considerably smaller than before.
b1g1an
25 Jul 16 #83
It's unlikely you'll have a life of death moment on one of them where you'll need a pic from ten years ago and you use the free wifi while you waiting for said train or plane to temporarily download any media you think you may fancy. Plenty of room on a 16Gb phone for a journey or two's worth.

You just need to rethink how you use storage and then you'll wonder how you lived without the cloud...and why you wasted all that money on the big memory versions. If you use a lot of devices it does make transition much easier.

Well done GQRDY, just remember to come at this with an open mind. Yes, you are going to miss imessage etc. Try doing things in different ways not just the way you would on the iphone. 2 weeks down the line, your going to wonder how you ever managed without a notification LED, back button, Widgets and Windows explorer drag and drop. Even if you don't like the experience, remember you paid under a third of what you would have.

When my Note 4 packed up and had to be sent for repair I looked about for a cheap little handset to keep me going until my phone was returned. I bought this. Its great. Can't argue with the cost. Stock Android is way better than Touchwiz, I don't even need to use Nova on this really. Other than for unread counts, but that's just me.

Oh, and they couldn't fix my Note 4 so they sent me a new S6 Edge Plus that I put straight up for sale and kept this. It will tide me over until the new releases are announced in the next couple of months.

I bought one of these a week or two back and it's fine except for one thing. The battery is terrible. If I use it for much throughout the day, it's unlikely to make it into the evening. Not a lot, just podcasts - Fully charged it didn't survive a full round of a golf app logging shots & gps.

I'm ex-windows phone, missing it but wasn't willing to commit to two years of a new phone when I'm not convinced that MS will. Tempted to get a different phone, just to have a decent sized battery (you seem to be able to get them up to 10k mah!). Anyone know anything about the Lenovo Vibe P1 or the THL T7? How would they compare in day-to-day use to the 5X?
thegorilla
26 Jul 16 #105
Just curious (as my battery life is good) what app are you using to listen to podcasts? I use Pocket Casts and bluetooth headphones and can easily get through a working day.
Also, what app do you use for Golf? I play as well, and don't often use an app as it does zap the battery. It will easily last a round though (I use freecaddie).
Kallisti
26 Jul 16 #106
Podcasts: Podcast Addict, started using Audible today...

Golf: Swing by Swing (though it turns out the free version is nigh on useless so I'll try something else next round, probably Golf Pad - I'll have a try of FreeCaddie if that's not able to beat the pencil and scorecard!)

I get up at about 6:30 - unplug it by 7am and it was out of battery at 21:30. Listened to probably a couple of hours of podcasts in total and other than that, email and message apps...
