Well, I used to use them in the past - in fact, the "top of the range" Belkin ones - until there was a particularly intense thunderstorm late one evening.
The following day I tried to go online, only to find my router had been completed and totally zapped (as had the surge protector unit!) When I rang the claims department, they weren't at all surprised by this and told me that no domestic surge protection could handle events such as this.
To their credit, they immediately replaced all my fried equipment and even sent me a replacement surge protector strip.
If "surge protection" is already included in a device, that's fair enough. But I certainly would never pay £30 - £40 plus for "premium" powerstrips and adaptors (as I foolishly used to) in the mistaken belief they would protect my equipment.

I've never had a surge protected extension in my house and never had any trouble

I'm not being "sarky". I'm just reporting a fact. "Surge protected" extension leads are a triumph of marketing over common sense. We did just fine before they were invented, and where's the evidence that they actually do any good?

The amount of trouble you went to, to try and be sarky. Didn't go well, did it? Either give me a decent answer or go sit in your dull dull cave.

Might sound daft, but can you plug an extension lead into this? Or would it be better buying an extension lead with surge protection in it?

Yes you can, and you will get the same chocolate teapot level of surge protection as if you had bought a "surge protected" extension lead in the first place.

As I don't have a photograph of you I'm not able to tell you if you look a bit like an owl.

One died on me too and as already mentioned the lights are quite bright for bedroom charging.

Also has a slight hum to it and the lights are very bright; that said I have one driving a couple of low power USB devices that are permanently on.

From other sites this seems to be rated at 1000mA output but it may be shared across both ports which is going to be pretty slow at charging even with the best cables.

Agree It Is pretty slow but perfect for charging phone or Ipad overnight.
