These deals for the Lion brand have been on offer regularly so it's safe to assume someone has bought this brand on previous occasions. The ratings for this battery is on the lower end available , ah/cca how are you getting on with this battery as what's a comfortable requirement and the minimum one.

To be fair, it's a £25 battery with a 3 year guarantee.
My battery had to be sourced from the main dealer at £130 (Japanese cars and non-standard terminal placement!), with only a 2 year guarantee.

Don't assume these are like for like replacements, the battery I got had completely different terminals and was about 6cms too big in both directions,so would not fit in battery tray.

Fortunately ECP website states the battery dimensions and shows image of the terminals so buyers can check prior to purchase.

Mitsubishi ASX 1.8 MiVEC Diesel with Auto Stop and Go.
Gel battery, can't have recessed terminals.
Needs to be the identical dimensions as it fits into a battery box.
However, this wasn't available in January when I needed one.

I considered getting a Lion battery (£45) from them earlier this week and then looked at the more powerful Bosch (£58) instead, the CCA was 420 on the Lion compared to 540 on the Bosch, the Ah rating was the same on them both, didn't fancy risking it on a cold winters morning when there just isn't enough juice to crank the engine for the sake of saving a few £££.
However, shopping around I got an even better deal on a Yuasa 65 Ah, 550 CCA for £49 delivered from autosessive.
Bosch batteries are made by varta which eurocarparts do not sell and which are much cheaper even with the codes and flash sales eurocarparts keep putting on...
Find the type of battery your car requires then shop around, eurocarparts are not the cheapest!

Right.
Anyway, I have a 2010 BMW 320D - so you'd guess I might be smart to start thinking about changing the battery (original from new AFAIK).
What do people think is a decent life for a factory fitted battery in quality car? So far no issues whatsoever, don't want to waste my pennies...
TheUrbis to luvsadealdealdeal

Oh, you're not proving me wrong :disappointed:
To be fair, I'd had zero issues with the battery, parked up to pick someone up from work and the auto stop and go kicked in. Heater was on (electric auxilliary heater), ten minutes later, battery too dead to start the car.
AA jump started it without any issues, but swapped it anyway - probably pointlessly but didn't want to be stranded again!
If it's still working, stick with it. Until you notice it being sluggish at starting etc, don't bother swapping it.
Don't know whether BMW are the same, but I always get a "battery report" whenever the car goes in for service, which shows the CCA and SOC.

I'd second that, measure your old battery and compare to the new one before ordering, I've noticed that the new batteries are smaller than the OEM's.

Actually my stop start did pack in about a year ago, I hadn't connected it with the battery but obviously (now) should have wondered. Otherwise the battery is flawless. (I use local guys now as car is out of warranty & nearest BMW dealer is inconveniently far away. So I don't get BMW reports.))

We've got a couple of nearly 20 YO cars at our place in Europe - had them both from new - I changed both their batteries in the last 15 months or so, that would be the third battery in each car's lifetime. Probably not fair to think the previous batteries lasted average 9 years each as the cars only get used maybe 10-12 weeks a year - I disconnect the batteries when we're away then charge them up again when we get back (mostly school hols). Not sure if that regime is good or bad for a battery but I agree with you both no point being over-zealous in changing to a new one.

Would trickle charging offer much advantage? I try and disconnect as many electrical devices as possible when we're away, we can't escape using central heating & back up oil radiators in the winter - on thermostat & only come on if there's danger of pipes freezing - but anything unnecessary is another risk. I guess you mean I would get a better battery life by doing that - if the only advantage were fully-charged batteries ready & waiting when we get back, that's not too important. So I'm assuming I would get another year or so of battery life, well, I'll swallow that just to not have another small fire risk. As it happens, if I get round to it I fully charge the batteries before we depart, then they don't take very long to charge up 100% again when we get back. Think about the timing of school hols - I'm not allowed to go in Oct or February half terms (she who must be obeyed said so) so it's sort of: Xmas 2 weeks there, 13 weeks away, Easter 2 weeks there, 6 weeks away, May June half term 10 days there, 6 weeks away, summer 6 weeks there, 16 weeks away. The batteries seem to do OK with that regime, though again I grant you I might be giving up some life by not using a trickle charger?

As a general comment, if it's designed to be left plugged in or left on, then leave it on.
A lot of electrical devices now have a permanent standby mode which they're designed to be left in, if you're turning these off every night then that could reduce their lifespan, especially as so many devices use rubbish quality electrolytic caps these days.
Car wise, my concern would be the immobiliser losing its memory or forgetting the keys, and obviously the risk of connecting the battery up the wrong way and killing the lot.

So do you guys think my stop start BMW 320d has got a special stop start battery?
Any particular implications if I ignore that & just replace with any old battery that meets the spec? (except for the stop start bit) - I assume that might mean stop start won't work, as per my current situation, but nothing bad has happened in the last 12 months since my stop start function went dead.
TheUrbis
18 Jul 16#37
Potentially, they charge differently but I'd stick with what the car was designed for.
The ASX for example has regenerative braking and flags up errors if a non stop/start battery is used.
Get the current one tested and see how it's doing, the stop/start issue you have may be down to the battery, but I would have expected you to have had other issues by now.
Don't you get any warnings about stop/start not working?
luvsadealdealdeal
18 Jul 16#38
yep - every time stop start would normally have clicked in I get a warning light! I just ignore it. FWIW I will make a point of replacing like for like when the time comes, just in case it helps. If I have a mo I will find out where the battery is & have a look at the make (I know it's in the boot somewhere lol)

Correct battery that Euro now list for a 2011 model is this:
