These are also NON-dimmable, so may well flicker if you try them using a dimmer

These are excellent, ignore the naysayers that harp on about them being spotlights etc, there is a place for downlight in any home when used properly.
The beam and colour on these work really well.

I've tried changing from my old lamps to these leds and they 'flicker' .... is this normal ?

Are they the 12v ones? If so then they probably don't drawer enough power from the transformer. One solution is to wire it up so one transformer powers 4 or more bulbs. Usually if the transformer delivers 20w or more that stops the flickering effect.

I am after day light MR16 /GU5.3 ones. Also some of the halogens in my house have stopped working, guess transformer fault. Do I need to buy transformer too?

Exactly the same. Halogens are 36 degree also.
