I remember when my mam sat me down and said I was old enough now... you know... to know it wasn't really butter.
World. Fell. Apart.
She said the other kids would make fun of me if I still believed it was butter when I got to big school. She did it at the start of the summer holidays, too. My nanna said she should have waited until a week before school started and let me still enjoy the carefree days of wonder where minutes seemed like hours and days only had an end when your brother came and found you and told you that your tea was ready and a net made from one of your grandad's bamboo bean sticks and a pair of tights stretched around a coat hanger would get you the trophy of a stickleback in jar that would glint in the sunlight as you held it aloft for the boys to coo at and the girls to tell you it was cruel and you should put it back in the canal.
But the magic died when I found out. It was. not. butter.
