HDR through USB at the moment but I rang them a few days ago and they confirmed that not only is the panel 10 bit but there is also a firmware update coming that will allow HDR through HDMI too for all models in this series.

Will believe it when i see it, their are loads of posts on the AV forums about Hisense saying their TV's are HDR and that it will be enabled via a update but never has and people have been waiting months and months. Unless it has the correct Hdmi sockets it cant be enabled, i have a LG 860V and the same thing is going on with that will they wont they enable HDR or even can they. I would buy this TV and except no HDR and if it ever happens its a bonus.

27 Jul 16 1 #7
I know that some manufacturers 2015 models may not enable a firmware update but all 2016 ones are supposed to be.

Time will tell of course.

The fact that this has a 10 bit panel is probably what makes it more of a prospective probability.

I have this TV, bought it last time it was posted on here. The Netflix and YouTube apps are both very good, quick and in 4k. there are loads of settings which I propably need to tweak on the TV as far as I know you can get HDR through the first HDMI port as I have my shield TV hooked upto this port and I knows it set to full dynamic range but im pretty certain it's only at 30hz through this port. For the price this is a fantastic TV and the remote even works on my shield to control my media apps

I have this TV... it's really great. No complaints... not "overly" smart, picture is very good (once calibrated). Looks really really good. 4K looks great on it, 1080P looks fantastic as well. I guess the only thing I would change would be the ability to rename the HDMI ports (like TV, Game, Fire TV, etc). I would highly recommend it.

It doesn't on the specs but when I spoke to the hosense technical dept to enquire, they specified that it was a 10 bit panel.

I also tried to tell AO to modify the HDR spec on their site for this model range but it fell on deaf ears.

This guy did a review of the 43 inch version from the same range, where he connects his laptop, although didn't carry out any extensive testing as a monitor or gaming

You could post a comment on his channel to see if he is willing to carry out some more tests and produce a video.

Given the kind of customer service levels typically seen at any Richer Sounds store, I'd gladly pay the extra 30 quid even if I didn't get the extra 5 years' warranty!
These guys let me audition 2 sets of speakers at home a while back before I settled on the kind of sound I liked. An exemplar of great customer service, bar none.

28 Jul 16 1 #26
I watched Euro 2016 on it, MotoGP racing, Forumual 1, got the Xbox360 connected to it, watch HD action movies regularly, motion blur is excellent, there are 4 settings (including off), and even at full it's not over-the-top. You need to be a little careful with motion blur as it can easily make things look very unnatural. Colours, contracts, sharpness, up-scaling (HD especially), is really really good. SD content is okay (but I think most UHD tvs have a problem with SD content). All the setting can be set per input separately or one setting for all. The menus are fast/responsive and not over-the-top animation, the "smart" functions are NOT in your face. Even the optical out pushes ALL sound out whether it source is HDMI (stereo/surround/etc) or video/audio in, I have all the sound come out of the TV optical out back to my receiver (even has the option to turn off the TV speaker completely). Just really happy with it, and for this price I can "upgrade" in the next couple of years and still come in under some of the other over-priced TVs.

Can you elaborate because I can't see anything in the specs to think that it is not HDR.

You may have information and expertise that could be useful with an explanation as to why it would not be the case.

Because I would then ring Hisense and read them the riot act.

only a moron would expect to get a 50" 4k tv for less than £400 that also includes proper HDR.

it's most likely an 8 bit panel with electronics driving it that can process hdr but not display it as its meant to be.

So first of all, there is NO HDR content out there yet (let's see if we can get some 4K first eh?) second this TV does HDR via USB for now... they do have plans for enabling HDR via firmware update if and when something comes out that can use it. I think the new XBOX ONE S does HDR gaming but... the game has to be made to use this... so I wouldn't put too much weight being HDR even though the big boys are trying to use this as an excuse to sell last years TVs (with this new feature) and charge a lot more money. I say... get this TV enjoy the picture and today... wait 3-4 years to see if HDR takes off (or dies like 3D) and get the new Hisense then with all the latest bells and whistles for another £400.

the point being. people are asking for top specs in a large screen tv available for peanuts.

they are being completely unreasonable. how about you come work for me and I pay you £1 an hour? do you think that is reasonable?

well then ask yourself why samsung sell a 43" 4k tv for over £1000 yet this 50" tv is less than £400. obviously it isn't going to have all the latest tech in it like a 10 bit panel, etc. it's being completely unreasonable to ask for it to have it.

if you want a decent cheap tv then buy it, if you want one with all the latest tech then get your chequebook out rather than complaining some ridiculously cheap tv doesn't have the latest tech.

Those of you who doubt the quality of Hisense TV's should do your homework and read the reviews.
These TV's beat the usual budget brands hands down. I bought this model to watch the euros on, which was sponsored by Hisense by the way, and was not disappointed. It replaced a 40" Panasonic full HD TV and has proven to be superior in both picture quality & sound quality. I no longer use my Sony sound bar as the audio quality from the TV is superior to it.
You won't go wrong at this price.

Hmm I recently bought an LG 49UF690V from RicherSounds. I've heard some good things about HiSense but for like a little bit more I think most would prefer a more established brand like LG. I mean I only paid £449 for a 49" 4k Smart TV that is just amazing. LG picture quality always stands out in places like Currys etc when they're all displaying their sample videos. Personally think LG picture quality is better than the similarly specced Samsungs, Sony etc and they're always good bang for your buck.

does this TV upscale sd content?
reddit
28 Jul 16 1 #64
That's not quite the case, although I understand why you would say that.

A TV can have the certification retroactively, when all of the necessary components are in place.

When the firmware update comes in to enable HDR over HDMI, then certification could be in place.

28 Jul 16 #65
Thanks.

That is the AO description, which in this case is, as far as information based on Hinsense's own video alone would seem incorrect.
reddit
28 Jul 16 1 #66
Not really because you only have to look at a wide variety of products of all kinds out there that are expensive because of things such as a simple badge.

Just because somebody may shop at Harrods does not mean that what they buy is any better than what they could find elsewhere at a fraction of the price.

Such is the power of image and labels.

I can buy a pair of sun glasses for very little money that will do exactly the same job as a pair costing ten times as much or have a suit made that would do exactly the same as one costing hundreds of times for because it has a label inside.

The really moronic element is that too many people are willingly conned into thinking that they have to buy high to get quality and in the process feed into the idiotic label culture, wasting their own money into the process.

When DVD writers first came out I bought one of the first ones to come into the country and paid £600 for it. Within a year you could pick them up for £150 and within 18 months, £50.

I was a moron once too lol and competition is so fierce now that there are many Asian vendors willing to sell lots at a low price.

Boyf is a bit confused, he got last year's 50" 4K Hisense from Amazon Warehouse earlier this week (great price though) - I take it his won't get the HDR upgrade and it's down to the panel/software?

It was me who talked him into Hisense after reading the rave reviews, in fact it's got me so curious I'm considering getting one as my bedroom set.

28 Jul 16 1 #70
Probably not but then again we rarely know what the manufacturers are going to do next..

Don't get caught up in the HDR hype, yes it may offer something in the future, but for now its not worth considering [other than future proofing, but again wait and something better will come along anyway].

Get one for the bedroom and dont worry about HDR, if it does comes to this TV then great, I wouldnt expect it, but if it comes look on it as a major bonus for free.

(As others have said above, there is next to NO HDR content and that will take a while to change, we are only now seeing a decent selection for 4K...buy with 4K in mind not HDR.)

You state both ends of the argument? Brands with higher costs have more modern tech and charge a premium as they have tech cheap TVs don't? Roll on 12m-18m and the cheap tv will have same Spec and the brands will have moved on to newer tech and will still be more expensice

Can someone please enlighten me to the benefit of 4K ??

No tv channels and the only 4K movie I've seen for sale was ghostbusters?????

There's not really many HD channels never mind 4K
pimpMe
29 Jul 16 #74
Same as my answer above, 4K content is available but there still isnt that much about. Getting a 4K TV just now is probably not worth it unless you pay a premium for 4K content from Netflix for example.

You may well be future proofing yourself to some degree, but then again you could get a much better 4K TV in a years time and there should be much more content by then.

Keep in mind there is still only 12/14 HD channels on freeview, 4K is a loooong way away on terrestial and HDR even longer.
PsychoSonny
29 Jul 16 #75
you do know theae tv's are cheap because there specs arent that great.

60hz
8 bit panel
no hdr through hdmi

the panel itself may be riddled with issues like ghosting, banding, haloing or bleed.

even the toshiba we bought 20 years ago had a 100hz refresh rate

this is a good tv for the money however its not going to beat a top of the range samsung.

as for paying for a brand name. most of us all know that. its why i dont own beats by dre but sennheiser, beyerdynamic and akg instead.

when it comes to tvs if you want quality then do your research on avforums and hdtvtest.

the only 2 pros this tv has is the price for the size and the fact its 4k. however the panel could be terrible, there hasnt been a review done by a professional calibrator.

you wont get a better tv for £400 new however that doesnt mean that this is brilliant tv. it wouldnt get into the top 25 of models released in the past year.
reddit
29 Jul 16 #76
It's a 10 bit panel from what the Hisense technical team told me on the phone.

The problem with some expert sites is that they can be so focussed on numbers that they miss out on the actual experience.

I read a review only yesterday of a TV in the venerable Samsung range and it's wasn't a great review.

The point is that a badge and a high price do not automatically qualify for a quality product and there are always competitors that come along and make better use of the materials that they have and deliver to the public a decent enough product at a decent price.

It's good for the market to have it shaken up a little and whatever we may think of what was a relatively unknown brand, they are certainly gaining a lot of attention right now, which will make the 'big' boys have to sit up and take notice.

Time, reviews and all the things that go with products will ultimately tell whether this kind of product will be a good deal.

its not a 10 bit panel. otherwise it would be advertised as a huge selling point. its also only 60hz refresh rate.

If you have the money and inclination to buy Samsung or Sony then it's your perogative but you can keep the hype - I'll keep my money! For sub £400 This TV will blow you away! Fantastic quality. The picture, sound, networking etc are a breeze. My parents can't believe that theyve just paid double the price for a smaller TV that doesn't look as good as this and has HALF the inputs! And for the record Hisense own Sharp and work in affinity with Hitachi on other products. Hisense has 13 manufacturing facilities in China and several outside of China, namely in Hungary, South Africa, Egypt, Algeria, France and Mexico. So not exactly a small player either. If you're sitting on the fence just buy one.
