Be prepared for:
RX 480 is cheaper and has option of more VRAM (but destroys your motherboard, house and marriage depending on who you ask)
Not enough VRAM for 4k gaming.
Not enough VRAM for 1080p gaming.
Old card should be £100 by now.
Buy a GTX 1080 like me 'cos I'm rich, look at me!!
GTX 1070 will beat this in every benchmark out there.
Cold, NVIDIA.
LOL Reference Cooler be prepared for the fiery pits of Mordor to emerge from your PC when you overclock with THAT cooler!!
Needs 4 8-pin connectors if you want to REALLY overclock it.
Only 3 Year warranty LOL I'd expect at last 9 years if they have any faith in their product.
Cold, bought this on Black Wednesday in 2004 for £15.
Cold, only Amazon has customer service.
Wonder if this has 3.5GB or 4GB LOL!!
The new 1060 released on the 7th July will beat this and be cheaper.
Wrong time to buy, just wait three years for the next generation of cards to come out!
Have I missed any?
I've voted hot, it still holds its own, but prepare for the onslaught I see on every graphics card thread I've ever read!!

Its a very bad time to post GPU deals... both last and the current generation ones almost always get voted to beyond freezing. People are mad because they (stupidly) expected the 980 and 980 Ti's to drop to <£200 and they are even madder that the 1070/1080 are so much.
BTW, this ref 980 isn't good value when non-ref Ti's can be had for not much more. They go for around £320 on eBay..

Apart from it being the worst possible time to be buying a new video card in history....
RX480 prices yet to settle with OC cards on pre-order
1060 to be announced in 3 days time
GTX 980 launched on Sept 2014 - that's 2.5 yrs ago! £289.99 for 2.5 yr old technology (which is a few decades in the computer World - well it would be if ATI - I mean AMD - could pull their finger out!).
Thanks to all the #Brexit ignorance we now have a worthless £ - less sterling more like Monopoly money!
...if you must go for it, go for it; but if I could I would, but I can't so I shan't

P.S. - don't tell anyone they say it has 4 gb it actually does have 4 gb unlike the 970 which nvidia lied about!

All other points of contention aside, just don't make the mistake of buying a reference card. It may be cheaper, but you will pay for it with your sanity...I know this first-hand. :disappointed:

You missed one very crucial point- EOL Nvidia card won't have the same performance in new titles as the older titles released before EOL, due to the very fact that the driver/optimisation teams have left the building and moved site (so to speak) to work on the new architecture (gen) cards.

it is less than 10% better than the gtx970. The 970 can come for less than £200 now. Noisy reference card too. Much better deals on the 980ti at the moment

Thief - 18%
Tomb raider - 20%
Bioshock infinite - 18%
Battlefield 4 - 16%
Metro last light - 21%
Crysis 3 - 20%
Watch dogs - 16%

You cant just go by the core clock my titan x is 1000mhz but is about 30% faster than the 980 which has a higher base clock
And DO NOT buy a 980ti when the 1070 is the same price, more powerful, has more vram and uses less power

kingpiinx
5 Jul 16#38
...."The 1060 shall go in the gap the 980 once was with similar performance at around 300 quid..." Looks like Nvidia just lost out yet again if they think a 1060 will sell for £300 in a world where a 1070 is £30 more or an RX 480 is half that price for almost the same speed....
yeah you're right £344 is cheapest i found but the prices increased a lot since price announcement . "...OEM versions of the GTX 1080 will retail for $599 in the US (about £450 in the UK), $50/£30 more than the GTX 980 cost at launch. Its smaller sibling, the GTX 1070, will cost $380 (around £330 in the UK), again a significant chunk more than the previous-gen GTX 970.10 Jun 2016..."

5 Jul 161#47
Are you just going off the gossip website announcements I cant see a 1070 for anywhere near 344 and the 1080 retailed at 600 not 450 because that was just a straight conversion from dollars to pounds which the actual price never is. Nearly all the 1070s I've seen are close to 400 and the 1080 close to 600. I still wouldnt recommend buying a last gen card but if 300 is all you have and you need it now then the 980 is a good choice

The problem with older cards now, is their performance will drop off as they lose priority for driver support.
I think the newer cards are super overpriced at the moment, but ultimately they will present better long term value (if you want card for at least two years), then one of the older gen cards.
Dean2k14
8 Jul 16#49
The 1060 has just been announced to be released on the 19th of July and will be about 220 quid and has more vram and is faster than the 980 for less money so there is really no point in buying a 980 right now
