After 6 months it's £5 a month

It's been a while since the BT Group acquired mobile network EE and now we're seeing the fruit of that alliance. All EE pay monthly customers, new and existing, will be able to access BT's sports channels for free for six months.

Access is through the BT Sport mobile app for phone and tablet. All of the channels are available to stream live through the application: BT Sport, BT Sport 2, BT Sport Europe and ESPN on BT Sport.

As long as you have a pay monthly handset, tablet or SIM only plan for iOS, Android or Windows you will be able to sign up for the free access. After six months, you can either cancel the subscription or carry on, paying £5 a month.

EE customers on pay monthly packages will be able to sign up to and use the BT Sport app for free from 27 July.

From their site:
EE have announced an exclusive BT Sport App offer for new and existing pay monthly customers, providing them with six months free access to all live sporting action on the BT Sport channels.

From 27 July, EE customers on consumer and small business pay monthly handset, tablet and SIM only plans* will be able to access to all the BT Sport channels on their smartphone or tablet. Sports fans can stream the most anticipated action live, or watch highlights over EE’s award-winning 4G network as well as WiFi whenever they choose.

Reading on tech radar's link, the streams will come out of your data package rather than across wi-fi.
davidc
11 Jul 16 #25
That's annoying for those of us not interested in any sportball as all that extra streaming could well slow down the EE data network which is marginal at times. Only hope is the EE monthly data caps will mean this will be wifi only for most.

3. It'll use your data allowance
This won't come as much of a surprise – it would have been a massive bonus if it didn't take your bytes to watch this sport. EE told us that the rise of watching football on the go inspired the offer, with a big spike in catching some action on the go showing there's an appetite for it.
However, make sure you've got a decent bundle if you're going to be keeping up with the latest sporting shenanigans – you could be munching up to 2GB of data on a phone if you're going to watch the whole match and hoover up the half time show too.

BT have brought it out that you can only stream via Airplay and Chromecast if you are on their broadband, i.e. if you have Sky Broadband or any other provider it won't work. Earlier last season everything worked fine, but, it suddenly stopped working and I found out that was the reason why.

On the face of it, it seems ridiculous that you would have to use mobile allowance. How much data for streaming a typical game, if you include pre, post-match and half time? Only people on big data packages (or unlimited) would be able to watch more than 2 games a month. I think Tech Radar must have got this wrong.

i do laugh at people complaining that there are conditions attached to a freebie...BT own EE...they pay £900M / year for sport so they are entitled to do what they like with it..the people complaining on here are the ones already paying sky £90/ month without question

I guess it depends if our phone numbers are listed on the EE database and how registering with the BT Sport app will work. Giffgaff aren't owned by o2 only piggyback on the network where as Life Mobile is EE and just a trading name.

What TechRadar are saying but has been misunderstood is that if you use 3G/4G it WILL come out of your allowance, but if you use WiFi it won't. It has been the case in the past that some things don't come out of your allowance but this won't be one of them. So they were just confirming that if you use mobile data to watch it will come out of your allowance which is fair enough.

Are they only allowing people to access Sport via Android and iOS devices and even then only on those devices' screens? Seems very restrictive even for a freebie.
Be nice if they had an app for Windows 8.1/10 (not Windows Phone) then you could hook up your Windows tablet or laptop to a TV.
Or even better just use a web browser as you can if you have a BT account with Sport included.

Seems no different to the swapables package on Orange panther tariffs a while ago. They gave you access to rubbish (literally, like horroscope apps or 1 free game download a month) or sky sports. You could swap the deal each month (but it was only worthwhile keeping to sky sports). You could access on phones with data connection (which verifies your details), then resume viewing with wifi. This seems to be the same. A cold deal as 6 months free is nothing. You can get totally free BT sports from being on a BT package anyway (I looked at switching to BT from EE and having a contract phone, BT infinity, line rental, BT TV including free BT sports package was barely £40 PCM). This is not very good really

Sparkz2k16

No it wouldn't as you need to verify your device using a mobile data connection first (Others have answered that many times in this thread). You either use it on mobile or tablet, or don't bother at all
Agharta
11 Jul 16 #112
They specifically say to download the app so I doubt it works in any browsers.
EN1GMA
11 Jul 16 #113
So that's why Virgin mobile put their prices up. Virgin piggy back off EE and not BT own EE, I'm sure bt won't want a competitor in the home phone/bb/tv market to have any advantage. So I'm sure they will be squeezing Virgin for more money to lease their coverage.

How bt can takeover EE without it being against competition laws.....

I'm on BT, just to make you aware BT Sport isn't free. BT offer it to you for free when you sign up to a contract however it is only free for the minimum term of the contract. After that you have to pay for it or agree to a new contract, it's their way of trying to keep you locked in.
chattyuk
11 Jul 16 1 #117
So 6 months is nothing and its a cold deal because you can get BT Sports if you buy a full package from BT? Where's the logic in that? What about for the people who have an EE phone and no BT packages?
vickyboy123
11 Jul 16 #118
get it with virgin tv. great if you're a ufc fan
Sparkz2k16
11 Jul 16 #119
Huge logic. Let me explain then. I currently pay £11.99 per month for my contract and i'm entitled to this "free" 6 months.

Most people will pay significantly more for their pay monthly phone, maybe £29.99 or more a month. Yet they get this same "free" deal with no extra perks. It's nothing but a hook and hope deal. 6 months free in the hope some forget they are signed up in order to put them into paying £5 a month.

When actually for the total amount, people are better off switching to BT and having the same or cheaper bills with BT sports included 100% free.

It will be a clear flop like sky sports swapables was (look it up, poor quality video for starters). The main point was about being offered something better. Not 6 months of "free" BT sports on a tiny screen that most people will forget about like they did with swapables (which were so unpopular, they are no longer available).

It would have been better to see the ability to login to BT and have free viewing of BT sports on all devices.

Owned by EE but run as a completely separate company. O2 own GiffGaff but GiffGaff customers don't get O2 priority or any other O2 deals, neither do Life customers get deals for EE customers. Ownership is irrelevant, they are run as totally separate entities.

EE want customers to be with EE rather than Life (higher ARPU or average revenue per user which is the key metric networks use), but would rather have them on Life than with a different company. To avoid devaluing the brand (in marketing speak) as a Life customer you won't get anything that is exclusive to EE customers.

BT sport is great if it's a freebie. Get it with my fibre deal I haggled. Course it's a bit slim pickings in the summer but they do still have good stuff. I really like watching Indycar on it. I get sometimes bt have it on offer, i was contemplating going via the bt mobile route for £5 And quidco but that only gives you bt sport lite, even for a month or so for champions league this is good value as you get the full channels, i have t-mobile via EE however it is unlikely to receive the bt sport deal.as long as quality is decent

can you wait and activate later? I mean what if the offer is not available next year? Is the offer 6 months from the 27th July?

No it won't, not even all EE customers get it! "BT Sport is on its way to EE - free for 6 months exclusively for our pay monthly phone, SIM only and connected tablet customers."

andreasuk
16 Jul 16 1 #157
You can use your wifi broadband.
Itd been confirmed.
Agharta
16 Jul 16 #158
In one sense it is as I can use it anywhere with WiFi as I don't need a mobile signal to authorise the app before streaming via WiFi.
I thought people were saying you can only watch the app on the device and not use Chromecast etc?
Unless that restriction is purely with this version which is more limited!
mmurdoch
17 Jul 16 #159
Not arsed over streaming to phone or tablet shame there's no deal for EE customers via there sky box

All the UEFA Champions League matches are Live so if you start watching on December 4th 2016:

The 2017 UEFA Champions League final, is scheduled for Saturday 3 June 2017 in Cardiff.

Anyone know the cut off date for existing eligible customers to sign up? Obviously no point in starting it before the season started and going to look at fixtures to see when's best to start the 6 months from.

Anybody tried it yet ?
Gaz1979
29 Jul 16 #170
I signed up with the intention of downloading the app on my iPad - Then realised I can't use it on my iPad as it doesn't have a sim. Silly me! Don't really fancy watching footy on my iPhone, plus it'll kill my battery.
furber
29 Jul 16 #171
I believe you get a BT ID so you can use it on app on phone or tablet
abdiman
29 Jul 16 #172
You're kidding right? You can't use this on a device without a sim? If so that's terrible
abdiman
29 Jul 16 1 #173
'The BT Sport app is only available to watch on smartphones and connected tablets that contain an EE SIM using the latest iOS, Android and Windows operating systems.'

Not such a good deal.
Gaz1979
29 Jul 16 #174
Indeed! I registered as normal, then went to sign in on my iPad and a message popped up stating I could only use the device with my sim, or something along those lines. Does seem a bit stupid to me!
callagc
29 Jul 16 #175
BT sport is an excellent affordable option compared to sky which is good but is way over priced
shaky1910
29 Jul 16 #176
just signed up and activated it on my phone
tried Chromecast and it casts perfect
also downloaded it to my galaxy tab s2 tablet and signed in and this also worked even though it's over WiFi
for £5 per month after the offer finishes it'll be worth £5 per month to watch it on a TV using Chromecast as opposed to what sky charges for sports
seem a genuinely great deal to me
heat added
Rickardo
29 Jul 16 #177
What phone did you cast from?
shaky1910
29 Jul 16 #178
LG G4 and the tablet is a Galaxy S2 9.7
Chromecast is the mk1 version
iain_ba
29 Jul 16 #179
Not sure why this is working for you. Tried both a tablet and phone.

Tablet - gives an error message after signing in with the BT id. Something along the lines of this only works with devices with an EE SIM.

Phone - there is no option to cast.

Do you have BT broadband?
shaky1910
30 Jul 16 #180

kbfanclub
31 Jul 16 #181
OK. Decided to give it a try. Possibly if you've got a BT ID already or a BT email you might get away with other devices. Unfortunately I've got neither as I've not been with BT for a number of years.

So, text sport to 150. Get a reply with a link to a BT sign up page where you put in moblie number, email and choose a password. Then get an email back from BT confirming sign up. User name is email and password you just signed up with. Download app from normal store.

On tablet, can watch anything catchup but anything live gives error message saying EE sim not present.

On phone, can watch both catchup and live but no chromecast option. However, can use the screen mirror option to cast to TV although this does tie up the phone and needs to be connected to power supply otherwise drains the battery rapidly. This seems to be the best workaround unless someone can find a better way.

In the app settings there is an option to turn off the data and use wifi only. Was hoping for something more reliable than KODI but I'll give it the six months and review my options then.

Phone is HTC10, tablet is Nexus 9, casting through Shield TV box with sky broadband and just realised as I'm typing this that these have all been purchased as a result of deals on here.

31 Jul 16 #182
So, text sport to 150. Get a reply telling me this is only available to EE subscribers. I sent from a domestic, 3g enabled EE phone on a two year contract. Anyone got any advice on how to get this working? (Wifi was off, using EE connection to send the message)
kbfanclub
31 Jul 16 1 #183
No idea. Mine was sent with wifi on although I understand all texts go over the phone network anyway.

Is it a smartphone (just with the 3g instead of 4g/4g+)? Is it with EE direct and not one of their many subsidiary/third party companies that use EE's network?

Can i join on 21 Dec ? So that the free 6 months will take me to the end season , 21 May 2017..... . Or must it be done within a time limit ?.
alex_dis
1 Aug 16 1 #185
Probably. If you look at the T&Cs or any of their advert smallprint, there's no mention of an expiry, but they do have the right to pull the offer at any time. Personally, I'm going to activate in September when the Champs League starts, then just pay £10 for the last 2 months of the season as I have BT broadband.
alex_dis
1 Aug 16 1 #186
I think you've got your dates wrong. Joining late December will take you to late June

thanks i've just signed up — and put 3-mth and 6-mth reminders on my calendar lol. Haven't been able to access (up to 24 hrs apparently), wondering if my wifi iPad will be usable, screen size is better obviously.

you can install the app on as many devices as you want, it's just that you can only have 2 streams playing at once

iain_ba
6 Aug 16 #194
People are saying you can but I have tried and get a message saying "Sorry, you need a device with an EE SIM to view live content or access the enhanced player" So based on my experience I would say no you can't use it on other devices without a EE SIM (well to watch live content)
jamsammy99
6 Aug 16 #195
Spent 40 minutes on the phone trying to set it up. They came back with some bs that it has to be a minimum 12 month sim plan. They fobbed me off by saying my £30 a month contract was a rolling monthly data sim and was not eligible. Total cop out.

I get this message too on my ipad. My ipad doesnt have an ee sim but phone does so i can watch live content on my phone but cant watch live content on my ipad. Strangely though, i could watch the community shield on my ipad , live, using the app the other day so not sure how?

You mention the screen mirror option. I have iphone / ipad. My iphone has ee connected sim but ipad doesnt. I can watch live on iphone but not on ipad. Any idea what i could use to mirror iphone screen to ipad?

All signed up and working... But...

How easy is it to cancel after the 6 months are up? When and what is the best way to go about this?
Gozer
12 Aug 16 #201
AAARRRGGGHHHHH!

Everything seemed to be going fine with the registration and it accepted my answer for Mother's maiden name. However when I clicked the email link to verify my BT ID, it said my answer is incorrect as answers have to be at least 3 digits! Yet the real answer is only 2 digits and it accepted that answer on the sign up page.

Now I'm stuck and can't do anything, the only advice pages are about re-setting usernames and passwords. No help on security question and calling both BT and EE has got me no-where but has given me an extreme head-ache and suicidal tendencies! Customer support?!? They should rename that!

Has anyone got any ideas how I can get around this? Thanks!
alex_dis
12 Aug 16 #202
Just to clarify - are you saying your mother's maiden name is 2 letters long ?

Should be, unless BT and EE decide to pull the offer before December, but as previously mentioned - there is no stated expiry date which suggests you should be OK to activate it before the end of this year.
