The new USB cable you bought is probably cheap and doesn't allow for enough amps to give the unit a stable power supply. That's why it's rebooting in a cycle..

Use the tv's usb socket and forget about the power warning. By powering it this way you have an automatic on/off switch when ever you switch the tv on or off..

Just started using my firestick but have run into a problem
I plugged the stick into my tv hdmi port and usb cable into my tv usb port as the mains plug is too far away for the supplied usb cable.
It seems to work ok but says insufficient power from usb. It said there was an update so I updated it.
I have now bought a longer usb cable to reach the mains plug however the stick just continuously reboots in a loop.
Using the tv usb port it boots up fine.
Any suggestions?, Is it faulty?

Well, with all the last couple of year's austerity measures and all, you'll be a bit hard pressed to be able to blame some I guess?.

Personally speaking, I only paid just under £10 for mine, so I'll NOT be one of the ones splashing out a full £50 on the same damn thing thing simply because of KODI?, DAMNNNNNNNN!!, hahaha (especialy as I have an Android Box already anyway?, so less of a need, less of a point, etc?).

But I will look into seeing some Tutorial's out there so to be able to do the KODI on Firestick thing myself ..... :-)

fw on mine is 5.0.5.1 but followed the OpenDNS method for now,
I got 2 sticks and one updated before I looked for a why to block(all still working kodi etc) but the other has stayed on 5.0.5.1,

Amazon could theoretically remove/disable anything they like from working. Especially if it 'may' interfere with their own products (e.g. Kodi, SPMC 'may' discourage people from buying/renting movies from their store). They also don't seem to encourage rooting so later versions may not be rootable.

Why is not doing updates recommended?

I found a Youtube video about two months ago on how to disable updates. I did it on two sticks and both still remain un-updated. I should have bookmarked the video in my Favourites folder with the rest of my tutorials on Kodi 'How to do's', but alas I can't find it in my folder.
If I remember correctly it involved disabling a line of computer code which is the Amazon Fire stick update code. If I can back track and find the video tutorial again I will post a link to it.

Bought 2 fire sticks on prime day, configured the first one tonight to use Kodi. I already own an Android set top box which came installed with loads and loads of video add ons. The problem I have is that Kodi on my fire stick is "bare bones" so I'm not sure what video add ons to install. I've put Exodus on there but the few I've tried seem trial and error. Does anyone have any recommendations? Is there a repo you can install from that will install multiple add ons all at once?

I found I couldn't add the kodi shortcut until I installed all the updates.

​I'm not much of a techie more of a granny but I did wonder I'd I could download the apk file from the kodi site then use app2fire to send it to the es explorer on the firestick and install it from there but then I saw this link on HUKD and used it and I'm very happy with it. Goes to show you're never too old to learn.

I'm assuming you're new to Kodi then? Kodi doesn't have channels in the way iplayer or 4OD has. As Kodi stands the moment you install it, it doesn't have anything but it's what you can then add that makes it so great. In short, you can either point it to any media already stored on your local network and play that or you can install free addons that one way or another will pretty much play anything and everything from all over the place.

I would suggest the best place to start is install Kodi and add the Exodus addon. This will give you a good idea of what Kodi can offer and in the process you will learn how simple it is to add more addons. There are literally hundreds if not thousands of addons (or apps if you prefer that term) that can then be added that cover a huge range of stuff.

Best thing to do is search Youtube for a guide to intsalling Kodi using ES File Explorer, as it's a very simple method requiring no computer or prior experience with Kodi. Then google search for a tutorial on installing Exodus for Kodi. Again if you follow the guide carefully you will need no prior experience or skill and it can all be done from within the Kodi app itself. Try it. I think you'll be surprised with what it can do!

what delivery option did you choose? did it say out for delivery? tell them how dissapointed you are with the service, ask them for a voucher for the trouble of staying up all night waiting for the parcel. They should give you £5 off your next order at the very least.

I put Kodi on my Fire Stick a few weeks ago and it's automatically put the Kodi app on the homepage. I had to use the Kodi website .apk as opposed to the Google Play Kodi, which just didn't work for me since it uses an extra file besides the apk to work on phones.

Very impressed with how this firestick is handling Kodi. I've been an XBMC/Kodi user since the original xbox version so I'm quite familiar with it but I never thought it was going to work anything like the way it does on a 20 quid device running off the TV's own USB power. Possibly the best bargain of the year for me!

tried this, i can actually click on the ARM on the kodi install and the circle spins and then it stops.

Yep, this is a decent guide, but ignore the bit at the bottom about assigning Kodi launch to the Home button as this no longer works. Amazon forced the developer to drop this feature. A shame cos it's a faff opening Kodi.

you can connect it to the tv USB port, it might say the usb is not powerful enough without a main but ignore it should work fine unless your tv is really old

I always find Kodi sluggish on the older fire TV sticks as mine is. Think I should upgrade it. But that 1gb ram doesn't help YouTube app buffering constantly if the device has been left on and used prior. Have to restart the device.
This occurs on both of my fire TV sticks. Not had a ROM update for a long time to address anything either.
Do people really think that it is a good investment is the main question? I know a lot more but ordered an NVidia Shield earlier which does look very speedy.

Kodi works perfectly. With very little knowhow. Google is a wonderful tool. You may have failed but I'm sure an average 13 year old could get it working just fine.

I don't understand how to download media eg tv shows onto plea for free.

I think they were referring to some users having network interference when plugging the stick directly into HDMI without the extender. May or may not be an issue in your case.

I got a HDMI Extender, is that what you mean? If so, there is ample length in the cable itself already cheers

Make sure you plug it into the WiFi extender for better results also

Apologies mate, when I saw the intro and it said they only recommend using the cable and adapter provided I didn't think to utilise one of the many free USB ports in the TV!

The whole reason for buying this was to make it easy and readily portable, so I was a bit shocked when I seen the mains, but realise the error of my ways now!

Speed varies wildly from 0.5 to 2m, essentially depending on who else is on. The exchange is massively oversubscribed, and the fibre capability is all taken so the rest of us scrap for what's left. I am unlimited, but streaming is so unreliable that it doesn't really matter. I'm in the market for a smart TV solution that lets me actually store media, even temporarily, so I don't need to look at a buffering symbol or watch in potato quality.

With the Amazon tablets you set them up to an Amazon account. So would need to create or use your mum's account.
The one on sale at £35 comes with extras which means advertisements appear on the home screen from time to time.
You can pay extra £10 to get rid of these or you can ask in chat if they will remove them. Sometimes they do it for free.

One thing to note is if using abroad you won't be able to get apps so easily as everything is geo based. So for example we bought one for someone who lives in Spain however because her account is UK and it pick it up in Spain. She can't access the UK store from out there so can't get apps.

But as a beginner and bits of youtube in the house emails etc I think it would be a perfect introduction.
Then if she gets on with it she can always upgrade when she is ready. If she's not in to technology, all the techy stuff that comes with the more expensive tablets she is unlikely to notice anyhow.

I have an Apple TV 4. It's good quality, but missing the All4 app, ITV Player (don't really care about that though), and, annoyingly, the BBC iPlayer app doesn't support subtitles. I'm moving to AFTV 4K..

Installed Kodi very quickly using the ES File Explorer method...see youtube....no tech knowledge needed. The biggest issue I had was getting the battery cover off the remote...had to search youtube for that one! Now got a portable telly for the kitchen patio, full of content with no need for loads of wiring. Very happy!

Yep, well you watched a low quality cam/telesync. I haven't got a problem at all with streaming, downloading or any of the other sources as what people do is their own business. It's just the endless boasting about it I can't stand.

Most Android tablets have a similar learning curve. However for a begginner I prefer the Play Store over Amazon App Store.

(Yes I know you can install play store on to the Amazon tablet. But only if your NOT a beginner)

All depends on what you want and your price budget.

The Amazon offers good value for money, but all relative depending on what ya want out of it. For something decent, ya need to dig a little deeper if you start comparing to people with ipad etc (Only using iPad as an example as alot of beginners prob seen I pads or samsungs)

Create a new normal amazon prime account(30 day trial------new email addy, debit card) then use prime now app and use your £10off simples

Personally I'd take a plex sub over kodi any day currently I have around 5k of films on demand with around 1k of them with full 5.1 DD sound not sure your get that on kodi and never any worries about links being blocked however I've brought a stick just to try my sub on to see how it compares with now TV

Installed Kodi via the "ES File Explorer" method and work perfectly!

I love the simplicity of it compared to my NUC. Kodi feels snappy, not as fast as on the NUC, but enough to not really notice.

So far bought a 4k fire TV, a 3d printer, some fancy looking idect eclipse home phones, philips hue starter system and a hue go, nearly bought a robotic lawnmower but was 10 minutes too late to purchase as faffing with other items, thank fully. I had the same thought this morning, was going to stack with "PRIMENOW5" for £5 off first order however couldn't get it to work, only seems to work on the website.

If you're buying this for KODI use then i'd strongly suggest you're better investing in a FTV4K box, twice the RAM, significantly more capable CPU and the option of hard wiring via RJ45.

Kodi Krypton v17.0 will require at least Lollipop 5.0 to run (probably to distance themselves from all the dodgy boxes that are built and never supported) As far as I know, the latest version of Fire OS is based on Lollipop. However, 17.0 is still a development build so who knows what the finished version will be.

There has also been scaremongering talk of Amazon themselves banning Kodi through forced updates ever since Amazon removed it from their own App marketplace. Hasn't happened yet and if they were planning that they would have likely implemented it when the started messing with Firestarter/Firestopper. I wouldn't worry about that either until it happens.

Yep, our household has opened two prime trials today and got the audible on both. Different names, different payment cards, different passwords and different email accounts.

If only I knew what TV shows they were going to run this year into next like The Flash, Bates Motel, IZombie, Arrow. This years too...not previous releases.

Yes. You just go to the App in Applications and select uninstall....not sure why you would ever do that though! KODI rules!

Indeed. You just enable developer mode ADB debugging, Apps from Unknown in System and turn off collect app usage data in applications. Make a note of your firestick/tv IP from About/Network and then enter it in the app settings. Then select any app you want to send to it from Apps2Fire and it pushes them over for you (as long as on same wifi) It is great and I use it all the time to update KODI etc without needing to SSH.

They both have their advantages and disadvantages.

Now TV boxes, in my opinion, are faster and have a better user interface. They also have access to Sky Sports and Sky Cinema as well as All4, things the Fire Stick doesn't have.

I have the box, I would favour it over the stick. It has a USB port so you can add additional memory and an ethernet port so you'll have a stronger internet connection.

I have also read elsewhere that the new version of Kodi won't work on the stick but will work on the box

Here's a tip guys to get more than one I managed to get 8 (2 of each stick)

Make sure you have prime obviously, add the sticks to your basket in Amazon then open the Amazon prime now app and add 2 to your basket in their as well.

A question for owners:

The marketing spiel says that the Fire stick has internal memory to buffer programmes. Can you TELL it what to load, like a film?

I ask because since I moved house last year internet TV has become a memory to me (no fibre availability, so many houses sharing the nearest cabinet that the connection is not fast enough to stream reliably and in any quality), so my Chromecast and Smart TV became pretty useless. There is a fast enough connection to download from a reliable source, so I can download 30 mins of iPlayer to my iPad within about 45 mins real time. I want a solution where I can do this straight to my TV screen, and from legitimate sources rather than pirate stuff.

Anyone know if it will do this?

They are hard to compare as the specs are quite different, the NVidia in my opinion is the Bugatti of the TV Box market and I don't think anything out there can beat it currently.. It's also used as a console. I was tempted tonight by the shield but I don't think the discount was anything amazing so went for the Amazon TV Box

Install kodi on it and you have access to any film/tv series you want.

YouTube and IPlayer are. The fire stick just basically lets you watch videos on your TV rather than your phone or laptop. There is no need for it if you are happy watching on a laptop.

You're probably right, but I can't resist £99.99 at that price I'll manage with the Lenovo, it can become a spare if it gets bad. C720 was great for the first year then started playing up a bit and needs powerwashing a lot, suspect has a fault to boot so hoping Lenovo will suffice for my average needs. If you are not happy with your C720, then I am not sure that you will be happy with either the Acer you orderedor the Lenovo. The Acer may have twice the RAM but both have slower processors than the C720. The processors in both of these have only about 65% of the processing power of the 2955U in the C720. Most of the Chromebooks introduced since the C720 have used Atom style architecture, whilst they may have higher clock speeds they are inferior to the 2955U in the C720, which is a true Haswell cpu.

Most of the cheap China boxes come with bloatware you wouldn't want to touch with a geordie shore casts sex organ .

I've got 3 firesticks have no issues with crashing or buffering (i'm using pulse light build atm)

I've had 5 sticks and 4 have gone back. They're awful. Slow, bad wireless and overheat after 10 minutes of usage. Amazon simply let me keep the 5th but still gave me a refund. I'd never touch the stick again, but the 4k fire tv is amazing. I'm hoping there will be a deal on that tomorrow!

You can download the Amazon app from playstore ect free. Automatically connect to firestick perfect if you've lost or broke your remote control

I have both,

Chromecast- wireless HDMI cable ( you might not need one if you have a smart TV)

Firestick- streaming device (you have apps loaded on to the device).

Chromecast is a wireless HDMI cable( you have to plug the hdmi to your TV and power it using either a USB port or plug-same as fire stick), essentially allowing you to stream data from mobile device. There are a limited number of applications but you can always check online.

Firestick is like a streaming device with programs loaded on to it. This mean there is a size limit ,8gb for sticks?You have all the amazon apps and the ability to add apps of your own for instance, Kodi. Kodi allows people to watch otherwise paid tv channels and shows for free( usually poor quality). If you are a prime member you can watch tv shows etc from amazon on this device, It comes with a remote for navigation unlike the chromecast which needs no remote.

I use the chromecast most, I found an application that allows me to stream HD movies to my Tv through my phone( like a smart TV might), Unfortunately this application is not available for everyone hence I cant recommend it to you as the developer has limited the number of people who can use it. With a normal HDMI cable, you wont be able to use your phone and it may also drain your battery, with the chromeast, you are free to use your phone, make calls, play games etc whilst streaming, It wont show up on the big screen unless you want it too.

Yes, you can pause rewind/forward. I don't get what you mean about the stick finding the laptop. I've never looked into connecting it to a laptop, a computer is not needed at all to use it.

Fire stick at this price hands down. I don't know a lot about cc but I think it only enables you to cast on to the stick from an supported device. Firestick with kodi is plug and play with 1000s of tv shows and movies ready to watch. Hope that helps.

The fire stick goes directly into a HDMI slot. It's basically having your laptop connected your TV via HDMI but with a remote if that makes sense. Basically you don't have to go on to your laptop to switch to the next episode etc.

​Kodi is a media streamer as is Plex. You could use that. Laptop would need to be switched on. Might be easier and more reliable just to connect laptop to TV. Unless you really hate the hdmi cable

Just get a Now TV box instead, and install Plex Client on it, and Plex Server on the Laptop. I have the same setup, but using my desktop. Flawless. And yes, the laptop has to remain on else where would the Hard Drive get it's power from, and how would it connect wirelessly otherwise?

I use this for my main TV and it's great. Netflix, Amazon and kodi via spmc.
Only thing which is a pain is setting up a vpn for Netflix etc.

All my media is stored on my laptop, I hook up lappy to TV via HDMI cable. Would this device be able to do that for me? Does the lappy need to be switched on? Can I stream from lappy to Stick?

I have Kodi installed on my HTC 10, together with the "Complete Kodi Setup Wizard" App, and Miracast it to my Sony TV.
The Setup Wizard keeps all the repos up to date and I don't appear to be blocked from anything. Works like a charm and I didn't have to buy a Firestick either :smile:

I use KODI on several devices with just the Phoenix, Exodus and Sports Devil video add-ons. What else could you actually need? Phoenix for live Sky channels, Exodus for films/tv and Sports Devil for footie.

You can get a Amazon VOD Launcher APK but it doesn't always work and the video quality isn't as good as official devices.

Last year I brought the fire tablet for £30 which was a good deal I thought. I am n with a fantastic screen now on my 4th replacement after unresponsive screens, constant resets, too many dead pixels. So far 4-5 months and no problems, which maybe because I got so annoyed with stock, that I flashed it to remove adverts and root it for other apps. Works well although struggling with casting smoothly/easily

Everyone goes on about Kodi. But isn't it just a faff to keep repos upto date and find content that actually works. Must of the popular stuff is blocked in the UK anyway. So you need a VPN.

I have Kodi but rarely bother with it. Still you might as well install it if you are getting a Fire Stick anyway. Just don't expect too much. Well that's my opinion . Interested in hearing others who use it regularly

This one (Acer C720) is perfect except for the crappy memory and I need to not have this struggle when browsing Facebook, you tube etc. It performs badly and needs powerwashing every 2 weeks, but I figured the extra RAM at 4GB would easily sort it but Lenovo is only 2GB. It two ruddy minds, I promised myself I wouldn't let cost influence me!

Those boxes are fine, the only thing they lack compared to a Fire TV Stick is access to Prime Instant Video.

​It does work but it is a bit of a pain to sideload and navigate. Just for BT Sport get a Chromecast. Works straight away, is reliable and the picture quality is great (switch the Chromecast to 50hz via Chromecast app for smooth motion). Even though it works picture quality on BT Sport on Fire stick is not as good.

If you really, really, want a Chromebook (and ask yourself why before you do), then I would 100% return the Acer and get the Lenovo tomorrow. The specs won't make a huge difference, but the price certainly does.

Do ask yourself again why you want a chromebook instead of a tablet or a proper laptop though - you'll get more out of an android tablet with a decent keyboard case (or something like an Asus transformer) than a niche device like a Chromebook, and doesn't have to cost you any more than the £170 you have just paid. Three factual observations: Kodi can be updated on any Android media box; an S905-based media box has greater media support and more media output options than Amazon Fire stick.

I've been looking at the Firestick for some time now but not sure how to integrate it into my music system.
I assume it only outputs sound through the tv speakers with no tidy way of connecting to a sound system.
At the moment I have an optical connection from the Sky+ box going into a dacmagic then amp but I also have an Audio Pro AirOne which has direct link and dnla.
Is there a tidy way of streaming to that?

if you are after buying one of these A95x boxes - you are better off with a firestick. kodi with any build will work fine and you get updates and customer service. whereas these boxes will die without updates.

I can't comment on the app, but certain builds and repos have BT Sport, Sky Sports, and loads of other sports channels included. You can even watch 3pm Saturday kick offs, which aren't usually available in the UK.

Even firestarter (custom homescreen) can be installed which displays all your apps as icons. Or can be used to startup right into kodi.

If you have full-fat Amazon Prime, you could share it with your mother as a family member and she would have access to Amazon Prime Video which may be sufficient to ditch Netflix, in which case I would suggest revert to S905 box and load Amazon Prime Instant Video. Oh the permutations... :smile:

Haha, I use it currently but it's just too buggy for me. Single clicks turn into multiple clicks etc, and I kind of miss the tactile feel of pushing a button on a remote.

If it was less than 30 days you can return the stick and order one tomorrow. Amazon 0800 496 1081 may refund the difference as a good will gesture, but it is TV's only now for refunds on price drops.

Yeah bought a couple myself they were down to £21.99 at one point I think prices change on them now and again.

Only had issue with one of then when setting up the account on it I think when they refurbished it hadn't reset the Amazon account associated with it so wouldn't let me add it.

They exchanged it without any quibbles.

Well unless you have a reason to have Amazon up the number of streams. I've got at least 4 concurrent streams on my account, since it was upped whilst helping them test/fix 5.1 sound on Amazon prime video + purchased content (and its remained on on my account). I only had 4 concurrent sources I could test with so do not actually know the limit on my account :smiley:

Cheers. For the needs that I have, it looks as though the Firestick will be sufficient. I've no need of the extra ports and sockets as this will mainly be for my Mother who's rather tech-terrified! Were it for me, then I may have looked at one of the boxes in a little more detail.
I find Netflix is a lot more convenient and quicker, as long as the content is there. Kodi is very useful but I've found that, even after switching between various builds and installing additional addons, there are still a lot of series that are only available in relatively poor quality but it's better than nothing. So it's Netflix first, then Kodi as a backup.

It is very easy, lots of tutorials available on the net/you tube,certainly wouldn't pay the over inflated prices quoted for 'loaded' sticks specially as the free live tv/sports addons come and go so you need to delete/add streaming sources fairly regularly unless you go down the paid route

If I hadn't added those exclusions, the first batch of returned results would include watermelon slicers, Hawaiian flower garlands necklaces, ropelights, bulbs, skipping ropes, and all manner of other irrelevant tat. Yes - but you can only watch a maximum of 2 streams of Amazon Video simultaneously any number on different channels though.
You would need a really good broadband speed to avoid buffering.

I tried to install SkyGo on my MXIII, it said it couldn't be installed as the device was rooted. I suppose if the Firestick isn't rooted you could be okay.

Don't forget though that this is a FireStick and if you have Prime you can watch the free Videos and TV shows that come with prime, there's no waiting around for streams to load up (or fail to load) like in Kodi. So you get access to both worlds

"Better" depends on personal requirements and expectations. Android media box is certainly more flexible. Comparison to media boxes starting at £19.15 is provided at post #53.

Worth noting the stick does use a lot of data per hour - there is no SD setting - therefore unlimited broadband is best.

S905 boxes have multiple fullsize USB ports, SPDIF or AV out, physical ethernet LAN socket, potential to directly power portable drives (with caveats), allow installation of virtually any standard Android app without the sideloading nonsense, greater codec support eg. 10bit x265/HEVC which is essential for halving network bandwidth and storage requirements whilst not losing any perceptable quality compared to other formats. Kodi and Netflix is an unusual combination as some would say that a decent selection of Kodi add-ons would surpass Netflix content. If Netflix is a pre-requisite, consider that it is unlikely that Netflix on a media box would be available in higher resolutions.

The only thing you won't get with any of these boxes is Netflix in HD or higher resolution. Netflix serves up only a 480p stream to any box that's not in their list of pre-approved boxes/ systems e.g. Roku boxes as well as TVs with in-built Roku hardware.
The Amazon Fire devices including the stick are also all approved. Shame as the S905's can go upto 4K.

Yep same here. I don't mind a 99p rise so I can use the same benefits on my bedroom tv without constantly having to remember to unplug and move it.
Last year I was an early buyer and got next day shipping but remember later in the day those orders had to wait for stock as I'm sure they just got swamped for sticks and so there was a day or 2 delay.

In general but with some exceptions, a dedicated S905 media box could offer more features and flexibility than Amazon's stick and start from £19.35 delivered ex-UK. Regardless, the Amazon Stick's a good offer price for what it is and will probably satisfy most users' requirements and expectations (including return options), unless you want the most capable Kodi player, in which case back to S905 / S905X (or other similarly capable device).
