In brief, Elite Dangerous (ED) is the core game where you fly around space in different spaceships and dock at various space stations. In space you can trade or smuggle commodities, mine for precious minerals/metals, explore new systems and kill others for credits. ED also includes Arena which is a "dip in and out" quick fire PvP game. Horizons is essentially an expansion pack which extends the game area to planetary landings where you can land your ship and drive a buggy on the surface. Horizons also adds additional features such as crafting to improve your ship. More features are to follow as time goes by.
You can play ED on its own without Horizons, but you will miss out on the additional features which will also impact the game area in space.
At the moment, Frontier are also selling the Elite Dangerous Deluxe pack which includes both ED and Horizons for £26.79.

If (when ) I get a VR device, this is definitely going to be a game I pick up. In my head it will be awesome, if it's even half as good as I hope it will be it's going to be money well spent.

Even if we accept your aggressive views on it (I don't) £13 for 20hrs of fun seems like a fairly good deal surely... And there is more content coming of course.

This game gets a lot of hate, but while improvements could certainly be made, it doesn't deserve most of it. It's a lovely game that creates a great atmosphere and really pulls you in to the immersive experience it offers. It also lets you do whatever you want rather than spoon feeding you. Some people don't like that which is perfectly fine, this isn't the game for you. For everybody else, give it a try and make your own mind up at this price. I paid the full RRP for Elite and then had to buy Horizons also, I begrudge paying more of course, but the game is great none the less.
Side note, make sure you play with a flight stick or you'll be missing out, if you have the ability to use a head tracker such as Trackir 5, it will improve the games impressiveness no end.

Why do Elite fanboys get so butthurt when the game is criticised? It's a boring, repetitive game that becomes tedious after 20 hours, deal with it. I was a huge fan of the old games but the new one has all substance of the one I played on the Amiga 500 in 1993, not acceptable for a modern game.

Ish, the VR support is still early days although you can do freelook any time and because the camera is actually mounted where the eyes on the character are it's pretty cool, the ships are also I think more detailed. Of course in SC you can get up and walk around your entire ship which is an entirely different level of immersion. I would wait till there is a free fly that way you can try everything out without paying anything at all, one just finished, but they do them every couple of months and almost always around big events or patches. The next two patches after the next one are bringing in things like procedural generated planets and a full FPS arena mode so I would say there will be a free fly around then and it's the best time to give it a go. And if you do decide to buy find someone that already has it to give you a referral to get some free currency to spend in the game on silly, but insanely detailed flair items and guns.

Keep meaning to try that game. I like the immersiveness of ED with a headset looking round the cockpit, can you do similar in SC?

As an early funder, I was disappointed with the missions, but now feeling a bit milked too.

Yeah having paid 50 quid for the beta it I feel that way too, also having known someone who worked at the studio I don't really like the way they do things compared to some other independent studios.
Thing is even though it's not finished I like Star Citizen a lot better as the ships are fun to fly. And they also show you that the fans will just flat out GIVE you money if you make a good game and keep them engaged, no need to bilk them for money just to get core features of the game.

Hadn't played this game in months till the other day. Works pretty well on a 5x in a bobovr headset. Don't know if Im out of practice or something but combat seems a lot harder than it was. Still can't decide if this is worth the upgrade...

NPCs are now tougher opponents due to changes implemented in recent updates.

Does this include Arena or is that an additional purchase?

The additional features including... driving on a planet in a car thing and the tedious process of flying from space to the planetary surface.

What's the difference between elite dangerous and horizons? Is horizons an add-on? was looking to buy it during steam's VR sale.
