Ah, so that's why it's called a cool box!

Don't know how they come up with these energy star ratings. Thermoelectric coolers are 15% efficient at best compared to 65% for the best compressor based fridges.

These are the normal "specials" that Aldi and Lidl do in every store. They are very good quality. Don't assume till you've actually found an answer...... might put someone off who this could help ...

Interesting, I must admit I thought their could be a fault but I had nothing to compare it to. Let me know how you get on and if you see a difference in the new one. I think mine is slightly over 12 months so no way of taking it back, but I would be interested to know.

Well for all I know this could be an updated model but when I took mine (bought in Aldi 12 months ago) around Europe and had is plugged into the cigarette lighter over 4 hour journeys I, and my girlfriend were a little disappointed with the temperature. Someone did suggest the power draw from the Lighter port might not be adequate to power it sufficiently. All I know is Milk and wine etc. was mildly cool and certainly not chilled. All I can see is the fan on the top lid I have no idea about the chip inside.

I was actually trying to be helpful about how cold it gets, thereby contributing something as I was initially unimpressed when I used it personally , whereas you were just being sarcastic, but I guess someone had to be.

Yes, we do have it turned up to full, and it still isn't cold enough. It sounds as though it might have been faulty from the start then, thanks.

You need to keep it turned up high for it to actually cool properly. The Eco setting isn't enough to maintain the temperature. Otherwise i would say there is some issue with yours.

We've used these Lidl boxes for years for caravanning (VERY small fridges in caravans, so have used these for main family food). Chilled food stays chilled for days, frozen stays frozen for a few days if packed in properly and lid not constantly raised. FAR better than conventional "cool box" using frozen blocks that are lucky to last the day out.

I have to agree with BeerGoggles. I bought one to take on holiday last year and it isn't very good at all. After reading all the comments, I'm wondering if mine is faulty, so if I can find the receipt, I will return it.

No but you can buy portable compressor based and absorption car fridges which are way more efficient to take with you. 55kwh per annum equates to a 6 watt appliance if used 24/7 365 days a year. These will be about 60 watt at least! They run constantly i.e. no thermostat as opposed to the absorption and compressor which do have. As far as I can see an A+++ energy rating is very misleading. As per my original comment they are very inefficient, in fact they are so poor you usually have to pre-cool your food/drinks in a fridge as these won't bring room temperature food down to a safe temperature quick enough. For picnics I would use a regular cool box anyway, far more efficient to freeze blocks at home.

...and do you often take your kitchen fridge with you on camping trips or picnics?

I got one last year, it's basically has an internal fan so it never really gets cold, but cool yes.

Don't these have a Peltier thermo-electric cooler chip inside ? I have never seen one with just a fan inside.

Sorry but that is wrong. This does actually cool properly depending on settings, as per sarl's comment. I also have one of these models i bought around a month ago which i have taken on a week long camping trip and it does work as a mini fridge.

Great value for a cool box with both types of power though - car and mains. Usually much more expensive

This basically looks identical to my Mobicool and almost half the price. Hot from me.
