Been in the lookout for a decent cactus deal for a while after hiring one a month ago.
Looks to be a really good deal that's only on for a week.
Colour as first come first serve.

Price includes admin fee.

I don't understand why people go on holidays? You pay a few thousand pounds to fly out to Mallorca with the family to stay in a hotel, then you fly home again after two weeks. You don't get to own anything afterwards!

Can't get to that price if I assume it's a 24 mth deal. 24 months at just £100 would be £2,400 alone. If its £118 down + 23 x £118 then that will be £2,832.

Great car! I got mine on a similar lease deal, had it for 6 months with 12 to go.

Incredible on fuel - it only has a small tank but easy does in excess of 500 miles. I do predominantly urban driving (mixture of 30-50mph) and it does 57mpg easily. That is without driving 'economically'.

The interior and gadgets all work well. The one minor negative is the lack of cup holders except for the one between the two front seats.

As for the exterior, I love it. I've got shark grey, I think they called it, with black panels.

If you:

Like the exterior and/or are not overly concerned
Want a vehicle that is very cheap to run
Not needing/wanting raw power
Would like a new car every 2-3 years

Then a lease of a Cactus is by far the best value out there.

donslibi
11 Jul 16 #12
I think it's actually less:

((118.80*18)+239.99)/18 = £132pm

You have doubled-accounted the deposit. It's the first month's rent so only needs to be added in once.

I really don't understand the appeal of these deals. 2 and a half grand down and you get nothing at the end of it. Why not just buy a £3-4k used car on finance? Same monthly cost but at the end of it you've got a car. Look after it and you could get a decent chunk of your money back.
oddballjamie
12 Jul 16 2 #21
Take away the interest and dealer margin and you've actually paid £4k for a £2k car after a couple of years will be worth £1k plus if you're not lucky the same again in repair bills.
barneystuta
12 Jul 16 3 #22
I asked myself the same question when I was looking.

I had a 3-4 year old Seat Ibiza. Did the job nicely when I bought it. I was paying £105 per month on a good rate personal loan.

It did just under 40 mpg and would cost me around £200 a month to fill. Add tax £120 a year, plus an MOT (without factoring in any bills), and servicing, I was paying around £330 per month (petrol, loan, and other costs).

Over 3.5 years (the length of my loan) I'd payed roughly £14k in 'driving' costs (excluding insurance). The car had depreciated, largely due to the increased mileage from 50k to just under 100k.

Factoring in the resale value, if I was generous, the total cost would have been £11.5k.

So my Cactus lease.

£115 per month. No tax. No service costs. No MOT. More fuel efficient, more reliable, comes with Road Side assistance. And a full warranty.

The comparable driving cost per month? Just £245. If I were to do this over 3.5 years (over two leases, so still no MOT), the total cost would be £10,290.

So I've saved myself a little over £1,000 over 3.5 years.

This may not work out the same for everyone, as it largely depends on what vehicle you can get at an affordable monthly price. The big win for me was the much higher MPG which suited my mileage perfectly.

There is no right or wrong answer to a lease/purchase being better. If people do the maths, they will see for themselves if it works out cheaper for them.

What a lease does give you though, particularly those who are less car savy, is a new car with hassle free and no big bill shock driving. And at the end, you start again. No waiting to sell on Auto trader / eBay hoping to get a good price.

Because you've been driving around in an old heap of crap for 2 years with all the inevitable repair costs and by the time you've paid the loan off, the car is worth virtually nothing anyway. Whether you like the styling of the Cactus or not, its far superior to any old banger you can get for £3k.

I cant help but bite on this. Is this called "HotUKModels"?, HotUKFHM"? No. It's deals. This is a great deal, no one cares if your pretending to own a fleet of M3s and Range Rovers at home, and the looks aren't quite to your obviously very well established taste. I had one of these as a hire car recently and I actually really liked it. Two things I didn't like on the one I had are fixed here: 1) It was diesel (and **** diesel) 2) It was bright turquoise.

Was comfortable, roomy and very, very well equipped. Might look at getting one really, especially looking at the state of the side of my current car from all the idiots opening doors onto it.

Supposedly getting a mid-life facelift soonish, which might be why it's so heavily discounted here.
Joe90_guy
12 Jul 16 1 #48
If, like me, you care more about what your car actually does, rather that what it looks like, then check out the new Suzuki Celerio. The name is daft and the looks are blandness personified. As a result, they're not very popular and you see very few on the roads. However this makes nearly new, pre-registered models incredibly cheap to buy. For a small car you get lots of space and the fuel economy is stunning. My wife's AGS (auto) has averaged 72.6 mpg from new and yes this is real (the trip computer tallies with tank measurements). It also drives really well. I liked the car so much I helped my daughter-in-law get one; £5,850 for a '65 plate SZ4 manual with 3,300 miles on the clock (list was £9,414). Voted hot for the Cactus deal although I'm old fashioned lease deals aren't my cup of tea.

"Colour as first come first serve"...............There will be plenty of choice then.

I passed a guy at a junction driving one of these recently and actually burst out laughing when I took a close look at it.
I think he was really embarrassed but I can't be sure as he was wearing a full face balaclava at the time. I doubt he was on his way to rob a bank, hardly the ideal getaway car.

12 Jul 16 #51
That is not correct as already stated but even if it was - what is the problem with that?
It will require one service during the lease period and that will cost you £210. For which you'll get OEM parts, a courtesy car, the car washed, any other issues taken care of under the warranty and probably a coffee whilst you are in there. Not exactly a major concern or reason not to take a great deal.

Well worth comparing the same vehicle on the same bit of road, but with stiffer suspension and low profile tyres. Did it yesterday, put me right off, may as well have been two different cars, standard suspension was so much better. Would advise anyone to do the same, so many of our roads are just not up to hard suspension.

If you hate it so much why are you in this thread banging on about it? Perhaps you protest too much?

Also wouldn't it be **** if everyone drove the same bland boxes around? Not everyone can afford a luxury/sports car that looks a bit different so basically everyone would be driving around in bland Euroboxes.

I think we should. I thought it was a good deal for 24 months, only to find it's 18.

This is the cost:

mpazza
12 Jul 16 2 #66
Good post I would add that even if there is no saving you need to decide what it is worth to you to drive round in a brand new car with no maintenance worries (ok 1 service) versus an old car with the increased likelihood of breaking down, possible big £1000+ repair bills and the hassle of getting rid of it. On many of the lease deals posted on this site that figure is going to be between £0-£50 per month which for me is money well spent.

People need to feel they are getting a good deal before they put money into a Citreon (or Renault), but whats wrong with that?
I wish we had a British car industry that still made equivalent Austin/Morris vehicles. They, too, might be cars that people bought with their heads and not hearts, but it would be better than not making them at all. British business owners, government and unions messed that all up between them though. With decent management, we have seen that British workers can actually produce cars as well as any workers anywhere.

No tax, no MOT, high MPG, smaller services, under warranty so no repairs, peace of mind about breaking down, enjoyment of driving a new car with the latest safety and technology, and no money tied up in a depreciating asset..

With my lease I'm actually saving a lot of money because of the factors listed, people really don't think about depreciation and running costs, let alone the interest you'd pay if financing the purchase of a car (and the loss of potential earnings if that money was invested/saved somewhere else).

I'm sure that for some people, this approach makes sense. If you like to drive a brand new car, this lets you upgrade every couple of years, and you've got a nice predictable payment schedule. I have no doubt at all that it makes sense to some people.

To me, it seems like a waste of money. I'm sure I'd enjoy driving it around, but I'd feel a sting when I had to hand it back. For £3k, I could buy a 4-5 year old car with a full 12 month MOT and dealer warranty, and that, looked after, will still fetch £2k at the end of it.

I paid 4k for my current vehicle. On finance, I pay £116 a month on a 3 year deal, so the total is about £4100, and I get free MOTs for as long as I own it through the dealership. It's fully paid up in February and it still runs like a dream. I don't have to worry about a mileage limit, and when I come to sell it I should easily be looking at £2-3k coming back my way.

12 Jul 16 #97
4K car worth 3K after 3 years ownership? In your dreams maybe.
4spoons
12 Jul 16 #98
Indeed. Your 4k car was worth 3k the moment you signed the paperwork. Just try selling back to the dealership and see what they offer. You'll be lucky to see 1.5k when you sell it after 3 years. And a warranty on an old car isn't the same as a warranty on a new car no matter where you bought it from. You won't be covered for things like clutch, exhaust, brakes, wheels, lights. All of which are worry free on a new car. You will need servicing and replacement maintenance items like pads, discs, wipers, filters etc etc.

But that's beside the point. If you are happy driving around in a 4k car then good for you. Must of us however, are not.

Not bad, but there have been cheaper 18mth deals for C4 cacti in the past and surely will be again? Deep purple only colour left too, which is up there along with puke yellow as the worst colour for these - think black best and any of the duller-looking colours rather than the contrasting ones - but that's just me.

Ummmmm no it's not.

With a meal you are paying for your appetite to be satisfied. Doesn't mean you won't get hungry again.

With a car lease you are paying for the use of a car, doesnt mean you won't need a car again.

Definitely not. If you're a speed king on a dark night you might end up with smoke on the water and then you'll need the services of Ted the mechanic ...

I'm assuming these new cars are under manufacturer warranty for the period of the lease (well citroen has 3 year i believe) is there any point in adding maintenance to a lease for a car thats cheap to run like this? I can imagine for a VW/BMWMerc etc.... it might be worth it to cover tires etc.
kbinternational
12 Jul 16 1 #119
Wow, I don't normally bite and I really don't know where to start with this one. "Why not just buy a £3-4k used car on finance?" If you're buying it on finance, then you have finance charges on top. You will have (failed) MOT's to pay for and in two years time you will have a car worth £1000.00 and therefore a bigger net 'loss' than a lease deal. Why not take it a step further and suggest everyone walks or cycles rather than having any car at all? I struggle to find why people constantly see lease deals as a bad way to purchase a brand new car. Almost always these are better than the deal your local garage will give you

Items which wear out quickly such as tyres and windscreen wipers aren't usually covered by maintenance deals.

I saw from some leasing companies maintenance packages that do cover tires etc... But it sounds like what you're saying is you don't really need a maintenance package on a new car?
4spoons
12 Jul 16 1 #123
Maintenance on these deals never pays. It is offered on leases purely as a convenience for corporate fleet customers so the lease company deals with all the admin and hire cars and dealership bills. When you add up the cost and work out how many tyres, break pads, services and so on the car will need, you will be worse off. (Which of course makes sense, the lease company is not going to lose money to you on a deal are they?)

On a deal like this, where the car is going to not need a new set of tyres let alone anything else before you hand it back, there is virtually no reason to go with maintenance included.

Thank you. I've testing the waters with a lease as I've usually just bought used. This cleared up a lot for me. Now im just sad I missed that Golf R Estate deal from a couple weeks back.
4spoons
12 Jul 16 1 #125
No worries, glad to have helped. Golf R deals are cracking and have been floating around repeated for about 2 years, they are not selling at all well on the retail market so the lease deals are really attractive. I would say its almost guaranteed that a similar deal will be around again before long. Two weeks ago was the end of Q2, so probably Aug/Sept at the end of Q3 would be a safe bet. I would approach the lease agents that have offered these deals before and ask them to call you when the same deal is around again.
Dewhurst93
12 Jul 16 1 #126
Because a car drops in value once you've bought it. It's not like a house. Leasing a new car is usually worry free. For me it means no MOT and no road tax. I get breakdown cover and I can avoid the hassle of wasting a few grand on a car that is a pile of rubbish and needs constant repairs

Thanks Vulcan.

I spoke to them at about 5pm (they were very helpful). At that stage there were only 3 cars (on this promotion) left in the country. 1 credit application had been approved (i.e. 1 of the 3 cars already gone), and two credit applications were pending approval. Therefore possibly no more left at this price :disappointed:

Deal may be expiring for now quite soon but, a Cactus Flair for around £130 all in...

You simply cannot get this much car, this new and this cheap anywhere else.

Best bang for buck car deal out there, or damn near. For those that can't work something like that out, well that's genuinely your own problem!

The above is a straightforward matter of fact. Granted, the image and looks of vehicles are much more subjective. I wouldn't write off the more funky colours, as they have their place. Certain demographics will love the hello yellow and deep purple. Certain demographics will be suited to an all black colourway. None of them look bad when viewed through this prism.

It's horses for courses. For the overly arrogant, and slightly dim on here, I could almost guarantee you that, if everyone one in the country was polled, shown two pictures, and asked which looks the more ridiculous: a young lady in a deep purple Cactus Flair, or the archetypal driver in his gold wheeled, blue Subaru WRX, the latter will undoubtedly be crowned the clown!
nickyjg
12 Jul 16 2 #138
That's not true. It's a valid comparison. Outside the realm of classic car dealing etc driving a car will cost a certain amount per day, whether you buy, then sell, or lease. Over any amount of days you will lose money and have nothing to show for it only the experience you have had driving it. There's no avoiding that fact.

It's weighing up what you get in return for each days money. Usually, with the majority of these comparisons, we are talking in the region of about £5-£15 a day, whether leasing or buying, then selling. A good lease deal obviously wins the vast majority of the time when you factor in the new car experience, and the myriad of other benefits. It's well established on here that some people just have a hard time working out the logic!

Similarly, if you are going on holiday, you know you will pay each day you are on it, with nothing to show for it only the experience of each day of your holiday. Again, one must weigh up the value of the experience they are to have against the money they are to pay for that experience.

So if I'm interested in this concept and want to keep my eyes open for future deals from this and other companies and this and other cars is there a 'generic' term I should type into google to search so I can subscribe to email offers ?

Many thanks Roger
4spoons
13 Jul 16 #141
You can search for "personal contract hire agents' but there will be a lot of results.. The same few companies usually show up in these kind of deals - NVS, G2L, CHAC, DSG, Select, Plan etc etc you can go to their websites and subscribe to their email lists.

There is also contracthireandleasing.com which lists deals from all providers and allows you to search by car and contract type.

Is there a similar deal available somewhere else?
4spoons
13 Jul 16 #144
I doubt it. There are lots of agents that offer the deal but ultimately they are all supplied by Citroen Finance so when the stock is gone from this batch, it's gone. No doubt it will be around again next time they need to boost their quarter end numbers in a hurry.

13 Jul 16 #145
So what actually happens at the end of these lease agreements in terms of the following two matters:

(1) The car - does it go on to be a hire car or just sold at auction or what? Is there a way to purchase one of these at a substantial discount bearing in mind those who have leased them will have taken at least reasonable care so as not to get stung at the end of the agreement.

(2) Is there a fixed date to return the car exactly 18 months after you take it or is there leeway to allow you some flexibility in obtaining an alternative lease deal to keep you mobile?

Cheers,

SP
wenttoabetterplace
13 Jul 16 #146
Just be sensible and miss the turn. Don't jeopardise other road users because of your lack of foresight and planning.
4spoons
13 Jul 16 #147
1 - They are collected by an auction company (either Mannheim or BCA) and driven to the nearest auction site.where they are repaired, prepared and sold within a week or two at most. There is no option to purchase the car directly. You could go down to the auction house on the right day and buy it yourself if you really wanted. But with buyer's premiums and fees that private punters have to pay at auction houses these days it will likely not be worth it. Hire cars are all brand new so no way it would be used for that.

2 - The date is fixed, the most leeway you will get will be a week at most. Occasionally you will be able to continue the contract for another fixed period, 6 months, 12 months etc. Surprisingly the lease companies are not as keen on this as you would expect. Of the 4 lease cars I have had, I have tried to extend them all. 2 completely refused, 1 offered another 12 months at a hugely increased price and only 1 actually allowed me to take another 6 months at the same rate. To make it worse, in my experience they won't actually discuss whether they are going to offer an extension or not until the month before your contract runs out, so planning is difficult.
To be fair, you don't need leeway - you've got 18 months to plan your next car. If it isn't ready on the day they come to collect the car, that's your fault not theirs.

13 Jul 16 #148
silly question.

if its 10k miles per annum on 18 month lease, how many miles can be used for the 6 months of year 2, is it 5k? Just wondering because how the miles are used over the months can vary so is it strictly half the allowance in the second year?
For some reason I thought 10k is available in the second year aswell lol which I don't think is the case.
4spoons
13 Jul 16 #149
The actual contract will represent the total mileage for the whole term, so it will actually say 15k total mileage at the end of the contract and there will be a price per mile for every mile over. Sometimes it is cheaper to take a lower mileage contract and just pay the overage at the end. The rates are not that bad. its 9.5p per mile on these. So if you go 1,000 miles over, you'll owe them £95.
muffboy
13 Jul 16 1 #150
You are correct it was a silly question, you already knew the answer so why ask it?
rogertb
14 Jul 16 #152
Sorry to be a pain but I've never looked at this sort of deal before and wondered what I should look out for on similar offers. Given that, it seems, this particular deal is 'over' I thought I'd look around and found this:

http://www.ivlleasing.com/deals/citroen-cactus-flair/?gclid=CJ_D4Yyx8s0CFcYcGwodqAoNoA

Now to my question ... the 'headline' price is £150+VAT ... but then I'm immediately confused by "6+35 (3 years), non maintained, quote based on BCH" what does that all mean please ?
4spoons
14 Jul 16 #153
6+35 means you pay 6 monthly payments up front and then 35 monthly payments.
Non maintained means the service costs are not included, ie you take care of that yourself whilst you have the vehicle.
BCH stands for Business Contract Hire. All that really means is that VAT is not included in the price.

That is a pretty terrible deal compared to this one.
rogertb
15 Jul 16 #154
Thanks again 4spoons ... OK one last (I hope) question.

With the original 'deal' - at the end of 18 months the car has to be handed back, do you then need to find another deal ? ie if there's not a "Cactus" deal around at the time would I need to search out a cheap (circa £150 a month) deal myself, I could end up with something I don't really want ?
4spoons
15 Jul 16 #155
Well I'm not really sure what you are asking. The contract ends and the car goes back. If you want another contract hire car then you take out another contract, if you don't then you don't.

If there's nothing you like within your budget you either settle for something you can afford or you spend more money? Sometime the best deal isn't contract hire, you can assess what's best every time.
rogertb
15 Jul 16 #156
Actually 4spoons you answered perfectly, thank you. I'm just trying to find the potential problems and the finding a replacement is significant. Yet again good of you to take the time. Roger

nothing - apart from excluisive use of a brand new car for 2 years with no no road tax, negligible maintenance and no depreciation. - Pay £4k for a used car, plus £1000 on finance interest plus maintenance and road tax costs, part ex it after 2 years and find that it's worth £1500 - wheres the other £4000 gone ? If an asset appreciates, buy it, if it depreciates, lease it.
