You might be, but the majority wouldn't - if they sold for £50, they'd be selling them faster than they were being manufactured!!

Show me any other brand new phone with similar/identical specs for £50. Even a cheap Chinese-branded one would be impossible to find. The closest I've come across is the Pepsi-branded one for £67, which has only quarter the ROM & half the RAM capacity to begin with.

Bush started making radios in the 1930s and to give them their due theres still a few around today. It was all downhill after that. With their sister company Alba they make low end electronics with low end components. They are owned by the Home Retail group so youll find them in Argos and Homebase. A recent Bush tablet review just about sums them up "Cheap as it may be, it’s also below par. Calling Bush’s tablet "ordinary" would be a compliment. I dont mind being a brand snob if I can get something decent for a few quid extra.
The saving grace for this phone is that its made in China from what I can gather. Lots of good phones are manufactured these days. If you've got £200 then a Xiaomi would be a far better and safer bet.

Unforgivable on a £200 phone. Even the old £99 smart ultra 6 has NFC, plus it doesn't have some mediatek chipset inflicted on it (unlike the smart ultra 7 :disappointed: )

As for the 4gb vs 2gb, I can't think of a single android app that runs crap on 2 but much better on 4, other than probably some geeky benchmarking app. Android is excellent at memory management now, only took 8 years.

Bought my wife a Spira last Christmas when it went to half price (£39.99).
She destroys phones - I've bought her Alcatel phones which have lasted weeks. The Spira however has held up pretty well and it's a better phone than what I paid for it.
I've just picked up a G4 for free on contract (contract was same as what I was paying Giffgaff, so a no brainer), but I'll keep my eye on this closer to Christmas. At £129.99, I may bite.

Good grief, am I missing something here? Have we all been brainwashed so much that we walk down the street holding our phones out so the brand is clear for all to see? Having tinkered with Chinese phones and realised I could buy several (just as good) instead of just one, I buy phones for what they can do for me. Dual SIMs that don't take up the SD card slot is a big plus. If you're worried about the brand, buy a case . . .

This runs a MediaTek MT6755 (Cortex A53 - ARMv8) for anyone who's interested. It's an octa core with a max clock speed of 1.9ghz (according to gfxbench). Sounds decent. The snapdragon 617 uses 8 A53's as well but it's max clock speed is only 1.5ghz.

Edit: the 808 in the nexus 5x is more powerful because 2 of it's cores are A57's and it only has 4 A53's for power saving. I don't know much about graphics but I know the 808 can handle quad HD screens (like in the LG G4). The 617 and the graphics is this phone are full hd capable max. So to put that in perspective, a quad hd phone running a quad hd benchmark gets it's framerate roughly doubled when running a full hd benchmark. So the nexus 5x is going to be the better gaming phone since it's only full hd. But not as good at multitasking since that comes down to ram. Sorry if this is obvious.

Very tempted by this. Recently purchased the Moto G4 plus but am not happy with it. Wished I'd bought the regular G4.

Bit annoyed that the Bush/Archos phones are not available considering the Bush phone was meant to be released on 5th August and it's now the 11th.

The Archos phone is showing as unavailable on their website and also the lack of reviews is disappointing.

This phone does seem to have high specs but sadly Bush is a fairly "new" entrant to the smartphone market and has a long way to go to match the elite like Xiaomi. I bought a Bush Eluma B25 from Argos a couple of months ago based on the reviews here on HotUKdeals. This was a Windows 10 phone and it seemed to function ok. However I noticed two MAJOR niggles, it took ages to boot up and secondly, it did not allow the setting of a different ringtone to the SECOND sim card. This meant that I was unable to determine whether or not someone was calling me on the second number and consequently it made the whole purpose of having a second sim card (which in my case was for marketing and useless callers) somewhat redundant.

Went off to return it to Argos a few days later and the returns counter had now been converted into a fast track eBay delivery point. So queued up at the main tills (only one operator serving as usual despite the rush) and after 10 minutes got to the front to have him say: "I could only return the item if there was a FACTORY FAULT with it". Tried to explain the missing feature but he was not having it even though he fully understood what I was saying as he was a young man. He sulkily referred me to the jewellery counter where a supervisor would look at the phone and decide if it was worth taking back (so much for the previously excellent Argos service).

Queued up at the jewellery counter for another 5 minutes, explained the problem to the supervisor who had a much higher IQ than the guy at the till and was also willing to help and she immediately refunded me in full.

This incident has taught me two valuable lessons:
1. Is Bush sufficiently experienced to produce and match the high quality smartphones on the market currently? Yes their prices are very reasonable but can they match the features and ensure they work perfectly?
2. Is Argos capable of accepting returns instead of fobbing off old and loyal customers of many years like myself?

Just for the record, I did own a Bush CRT television for many years a long time ago and it worked flawlessly, but then I did buy a Bush MP3 player a few years ago and it kept clicking after each MP3 song so had to be returned. My conclusion is that this phone seems to have a good spec so if you are sure Argos will take it back if it proves faulty, go for it, otherwise don't waste your time.

P.S. the most important feature of this modern Bush phone is not mentioned in this post i.e. the battery size. Others now produce batteries that are rated 4000 mAh or even 6250 mAh. This is important as the bigger the spec of the battery the longer you will be able to use the phone in between each charge.
TheHun6
11 Aug 16 #74
On paper the specs look great and before we bogged down with brand snobbery, check who actually manufactures the phone on behalf of Argos. Chances are it will by a major manufacturer. Argos branded products are notorious for heavy discounting so expect a. big price drop over the next few months. Who knows, by Christmas this could become a very tempting proposition and perhaps a serious challenger to the Moto G 4.
Thedude21
11 Aug 16 #75
What's your reasoning as I'm seriously considering the G4 plus over the G4 myself.
Dezkenob1
11 Aug 16 #76
The main reason I went for the G4 plus was for the turbo charger. I wasn't that interested in the extra megapixels or the fingerprint scanner and so wish I'd just bought the regular G4. Another reason (and this could just be a one off) is that if I use it while it's on charge, the phone goes glitchy, buggy and crazy. The screen jumps about, random apps open, the screen seems to think it's being pressed loads of times and I just can't do anything about it. Pressing the touch screen buttons does nothing. The battery doesn't come out so I can't do that to end the craziness. The only thing that seems to work (not all of the time) is pressing the power button and then the phone stops but if I continue to use the phone on charge, it happens again. If using the power button doesn't work then I literally have to wait a long time for the phone to calm down. I intend to return the phone based on this. Like I said, it could just be a one off and my phone could be faulty but it's enough to put me off replacing it with another plus. I would rather spend £50 less for the G4 and buy the turbo charger as an extra. Having said all of that, the Plus has exactly the same specs as the regular G4 (apart from camera and fingerprint scanner) so it is a good phone but not worth the extra £50ish pound in my opinion. Being faulty doesn't help.

...... it seems it's not released on that date. It's now the 11th August and still no sign of it in stock.
Dezkenob1
11 Aug 16 #78
Yep, seriously interested too. Unfortunately it appears not to be released on the 5th August as it's now the 11th. It's showing as out of stock completely on the Argos website. I have noticed on the Archos website that it is also unavailable in this country and is only available as a preorder from the French website for a release date in September. Archos are a French company. I've emailed them and Argos and tweeted Archos regarding when this phone will be available.
Thedude21

12 Aug 16 1 #80
Apparently, according to my correspondence with Archos, the Archos Diamond 2 Plus isn't going to be sold in the UK. :disappointed: It's to do with the charger not being a UK charger. They suggested I email their sales team to see if they could make an exception and sell to me in the UK because I can buy an adaptor.
Dezkenob1
12 Aug 16 #81
....also, having just had a web chat with an Argos online help employee, the Bush Spira E3X won't be in stock until the 5th and the 12th September. She said they'd sold out but I've personally been keeping an eye out on the Argos website since it was meant to be released on the 5th of August but it has shown as out of stock since midnight on that date ever since. I don't believe it was ever in stock unless there's anyone here that has managed to purchase one but I doubt it.
Dezkenob1
12 Aug 16 #82
Here's the email I just received from Archos.

"Dear customer,

Unfortunately this new product is no longer compatible with the UK chargers we have in stock – therefore we cannot provide the product with a valid UK charger, and have had to take it off our UK on-line shop.

However, the smartphone Bush 5.5 Hero will be available very shortly on the UK market – the same product as the Archos Diamond 2 Plus.

Our apologies for any inconvenience.

Cordialement / Best regards"

This just raises more questions because they have mentioned the Bush version as being called "Bush 5.5 Hero" and not "Bush Spira E3X".

Now I'm really confused.

Better deal/phone IMO, IF you can get it (could be a miss-price at this store only) - check your local Vodafone store anyway - you never know! 'Only' 32+3Gb, but has NFC, microsd slot & just about everything else:

Vodafone Smart Platinum 7 (£135) excluding PAYG £10 sim. £145 Instore @ Bath

The phones compared specs-wise here
Dezkenob1
16 Aug 16 #84
Yeah, that is meant to be a good phone for the price also. The only thing that puts me off the Vodafone phone is that it's tied to Vodafone. I'm also not bothered about NFC. Never used it. One thing that I do wonder about these phones without removable batteries is how long they actually last. The Moto G4, ARCHOS Diamond 2 Plus and the Vodafone Smart Platinum all have batteries that can't be removed. I appreciate that it depends how much you use a phone but in a year or 2 when the battery is beginning to not hold charge, do you have to go and buy another phone? I guess you do but that's kind of annoying and kind of defeats the purpose of a budget phone if you have to buy a new phone after 2 years. Having said all that, I guess most people upgrade their phone after about 2 years anyway.

Dezkenob1
18 Aug 16 #86
I contacted an Argos online representative about a week ago and they said the phone will be released on the 5th of September. I believe it was meant to be released on the 5th August originally. The Bush Spira E3X is identical to the ARCHOS Diamond 2 Plus but with different branding. However, the ARCHOS is not being released in the UK unfortunately. When I emailed ARCHOS they said that it's because the phone doesn't come with a UK charger and they said to keep an eye out for the Bush 5.5 Hero which is also meant to be exactly the same as the ARCHOS. It's all rather confusing because now there are apparently 2 Bush phones with different names that are supposedly exactly the same, that are due to be released in the next couple of weeks.

Was in stock today from my local argos store (Nottingham) so I went down and picked one up.

First impressions are very good indeed, decent build quality with what feels like a metal band around the edge of the device. Screen brightness and contrast very good, and very few compromises made - has front and rear cameras, front and rear flash, USB type C, fingerprint reader on rear (works well for me), decent CPU/RAM/storage capacity, and able to take dual SIM, however this is shared with the SD card slot.

OS wise it's stock android which is what I personally prefer, no bloatware at all!

Side of box says "Bush 5.5 Hero" which confirms that this is rebadged Archos device, based on another poster's info

Definitely recommend taking a look at this, its higher spec for similar money to the equivalent moto device. My only real complaint so far is that the screen protector and case included in the box are cheap and nasty, and it might be difficult to get 3rd party replacements, at least for the time being - most manufacturers don't include anything though so its better than nothing!

Thanks for posting your initial findings.

Could you let me know how well the GPS works and if possible, whether or not Pokémon Go works, please? My son has asked because he currently uses my G4 for Pokémon Go but from what I gather, the Bush doesn't have a gyro and not sure if this means he won't be able to play.

In fact, a general review after you've used it for a few days would be good too. Thanks in advance.
bensbb
26 Aug 16 #93
hi, I don't actually play Pokémon go but it installs fine to the device and opens up... from reading online the game works fine but the "AR" mode where you look around for Pokémon with the camera isn't there... you can still catch Pokémon though.

I guess that's another limitation of the phone then, no gyro! I don't think it will affect me personally as I mostly use my device for productivity, web browsing, email, music steaming etc and it seems more important for games.

I'll report back in a few days when I've had more time with the device

Can't believe the negative comments on here about a phone no one has seen let alone trialled..... I'm due to review this week as part of my techno job and I can't wait....I reviewed the Bush Spira D2 5.5 earlier this year and I must admit to being very impressed for the price bracket of £120.... Bush phones are made by Archos and the E3X is the Diamond 2 in disguise which isn't released yet but will cost £100 more than the Bush for the privilege of having a Archos badge, I will update you after the test.

Too many here 'spolied' by (mostly) incredible value Chinese-sourced phones.

Great, I hope it's an unbiased one!

Yes, known now for around 3 weeks: Archos Diamond 2 Plus £199.00 archos.com Octacore, 64+4Gb, fingerprint, 5.5" FHD, Marshmallow, MiscoSD slot, 3000mAh

That's great, Bensbb, thank you for checking the Pokémon thing out. To be honest I rarely use the gyro myself and even if it turned out that the Pokémon game didn't work, I'd still be getting one of these phones to at least try.

Elephone P9000 was another that I was looking at and has very similar specs, but I was scared by the reports of SIM tray issues (resulting in the phone showing errors that the SIM wasn't inserted) and bad customer support with fixing this... at least if I have problems with an Argos product I can go back to the shop!

This one possibly for similar money (& if you don't pay any VAT/duty):

Lenovo ZUK Z2 5.0" FullHD 1080p Snapdragon 820 4GB RAM 64GB Storage 4G LTE White/Black Phone £202.47 - Banggood

Much better processor in the Lenovo to being with, but doesn't have the B20 band, so 4G will not be available on some UK networks.
robertfrancis1975
31 Aug 16 1 #105
The advantage of buying the Bush is a 2 year warranty, and Argos are good if you need to return the item.
Crossbow
31 Aug 16 #106
True, but most who are willing to buy a Chinese-sourced phone will know about the virtual lack of warranty with most of them, & most of the Lenovo's Pros & Cons are listed in the deal post of that thread (the op's done a great job there), including the warranty situation.

So karl100100 (& others who'd like to know the same), go & have a read at least before making up your mind.

There are 4 reviews now on Argos website and I have also seen a few YouTube videos. My only worry is the screen is not bright and good enough...I may just bite the bullet as I need to replace my 3 year old Note 3
harlimb
14 Sep 16 1 #125
OK guys review now completed and I can confirm that this phone sets new levels at this price point, I've seen musings on here over the brightness of the screen - fear not as the screen is bright enough for everyday use and although not an AMOLED display, it delivers a bright and natural unsaturated colour rendition.

the biggest fear when purchasing a Mediatek processor based phone is the GPS performance, this is not a problem for this handset as the satellite lock on is both fast and consistent, only being impeded when passing through motorway tunnels.

build quality is excellent and shows that Argos are taking this market segment seriously with this rebadged Archos handset, it also shows how far the manufacturer Archos has come.

the 4gb of RAM is never pushed, whether it be playing frame intensive games or loading up multiple apps, no lag, no slow up, no problem, and as for the 64gb of storage, try to fill that up!

call quality is good, Bluetooth connection is reliable, hotpot and wireless connections are faultless.

handset tried with three, EE, GiffGaff and O2 Sims, all worked as expected.

camera is very good but not outstanding and not up to the level of the premium offerings from Samsung, apple, LG or Sony, that be being said it still takes excellent photos and videos.

charging is fast using the provided adaptor and USB c lead, battery life easily lasts a day even when using Waze for several hours without a power lead, particularly impressive is the power saving function which activates at a predefined level and conserves energy by closing and restricting apps.

Os is vanilla marshmallow with no bloatware, fingerprint scanner works first time, every time.

only minus is the external speaker, although being loud it lacks definition when extended.

all in all a thoroughly worthy handset that pushes boundaries considering its £199.99 Price set.

anyone considering taking the plunge can rest assured that they will be pleasantly surprised by this handset, well done Argos.

this handset was tested up against handsets that would come in at this price point today, Galaxy Note 4, Oppo R7 Plus and Asus Zenfone 2 - 4gb version, it held its own and in some scenarios out performed all of them using real world environments and day to day deployment patterns.

any questions just ask.

I'm looking to upgrade my LG G2. is this a good upgrade? I'm especially looking for a good camera, something on par with my LG or better would be great. Thanks
Crossbow
14 Sep 16 #127
Unfortunately, this is unlikely to cut it in the camera department compared to your G2.

The only other one I can think of for a similar price as this with a good enough camera is a Huawei P9 (if not available at present, it keeps returning every few weeks):

Huawei P9 like new Titanium Grey 32GB - o2 Refresh - £192

£211 on PAYG if you don't want to dabble with Refresh. If the PAYG one comes locked to O2, then unlock codes can be had off eBay for around £3-4.
robertfrancis1975
14 Sep 16 #128
Even after 3years the camera on the G2 must be good then.
Crossbow
14 Sep 16 #129
That & the fact that most mid-range phones that aren't well-known brands do not usually come with a standout camera.
smg1984
14 Sep 16 #130
You could always try the Moto G4 Plus I think that has a decent camera or if your willing to give up Android you can get still the best camera phone on the market for £250 the Lumia 950
robertfrancis1975
14 Sep 16 #131
or stick with LG, G3 or G4?
Crossbow
14 Sep 16 #132
Thanks for the review. It's what most thought it would be I guess - everything is mostly 'good' & it's 'very good value', but nothing really stands out.

Btw, according to 'Bush Technical Support' in response to a buyer's query, it's made by a different company:

Q: Is this the same phone as the Archos Diamond 2 Plus?
A: ...no these are not the same phones and are manufactured by two different companies. Thanks for using Bush Q&A."
harlimb
14 Sep 16 #133
shows you how much they know.... it even has the code for Archos 55d2 in the root, overlayed with Bush software
Crossbow
14 Sep 16 #134
That, or they are not willing to admit it.
robertfrancis1975
14 Sep 16 #135
harlimb, any idea what the camera is like compared to the LG G2?
Crossbow
15 Sep 16 #136
The LG G2 has a standout camera - as you know from personal experience & the many reviews that praised it. It still is excellent some years later because picture quality, etc doesn't decrease with time.

The E3X's camera specs look good, but I'm not convinced so far that it stands out in any way. It is good, but probably not excellent. If you were the average user, who owned a phone with an average camera & to whom picture quality didn't matter a great degree, then I don't think you'd need to hesitate too much to get it. Yes, not the best processor, but that may not matter to you at all.

So, before taking the plunge with this, I would strongly suggest to wait for more detailed reviews, especially ones reviewing its camera at some length with actual samples, including low-light performance, etc.

As you like LG phones, then yes, it may be a good idea to stick with them & get a G3 or G4, both of which also seem to have excellent cameras. But, may be hard to find the former brand new, & may be harder to find a G4 that will not experience the fatal bootloop problem at some point.
robertfrancis1975
15 Sep 16 #137
do they have problems with the G5?
Crossbow
16 Sep 16 #139
Well, the first somewhat detailed review. No surprises there, although good to see it equalled or bettered some phones in a few of the minor tests.

Still not convinced about the camera (for which you are considering it) - pics/video looks ok to good (in other words, only average) & not outstanding in any way.
Crossbow
16 Sep 16 #140
Seems like G5 was/is also affected by bootloop problems, but not so widespread.

Can I ask what you mainly use your phone for? And do you really need Android?
robertfrancis1975
16 Sep 16 #141
I use my phone for Facebook, Internet and the camera. I'm not interested in gaming, so I'd prefer a good camera over processing power.
Crossbow
16 Sep 16 #142
Well, you didn't say anything about Android, so I'm going to suggest the Windows-based Microsoft Lumia 950 / 950 XL like smg1984 did before, but to which you didn't reply.

With TCB cashback, they work out to around £207 & £276 respectively.

Anyway, from what I hear, both have excellent cameras (the same one really).

I'm tempted with the 950, as it's relatively cheap, I've never owned a Windows phone before or one with such a good camera, & they also come with a free Display Dock at present.
robertfrancis1975
