i love it when the comedians come in... not.

It's quite simple really, it's £12 less for a used handset that another retailer has sold new in the last few weeks. As phone prices only go in 1 direction after launch its a fair assumption that unless you absolutely have to buy one today, then a better deal won't be too far away.

Think that was just a mistake. Plus if you read that first thread avoiding Vodafone seems good plan.
Pondlife
10 Jul 16 #10
Erm it's not used. It's £12 less for a new phone than it's been on Vodafone and £97 less than it is there now.

The p9 lite also went up in price when Vodafone actually got stock.

11 Jul 16 #30
"One point to keep in mind is that while the P9 comes with Corning Gorilla Glass 4 protection, the P9 Lite features regular glass, so a screen protector of some sort may be a good idea."

I've had the P8 for the last year and it's served me well.

This. Although the 6P has very similar design by the same engineering department of Huawei.

11 Jul 16 #33
The Nexus 6P/5X will have faster and more updates, will get up to at least Android O, whereas the P9 will most likely only get up to Android N.
Also due to having the Kirin processor, not supported by cyanogenmod ROM currently
The big plus of the P9 is the SD card slot.

Please can someone clarify how this deal works. Currently in my basket I have the phone for £12 a month and the tariff for £30. Once I buy it and receive the phone I then ring O2 and cancel the tariff but offer to pay the cost of the handset? Is that correct?
DirtyQwerty
11 Jul 16 #37
Yes, just call up when it comes, request an unlock (if you need it unlocked) and the tell them you want to pay off the total device cost and cancel the airtime. It only took about 15 minutes in total when I did. I think they're used to people doing it by now as they didn't ask any questions.

This helped clear things up for me:

How much does it cost to end your contract early on O2 Refresh? What do you charge for the leftover Airtime Plan?
With O2 Refresh, there’s no penalty for ending your contract early. All you have to do is pay off the balance of your Phone Plan.

There’s no termination charge for ending your Airtime Plan once you’ve settled your Phone Plan.

Unidays do 20% student discount on o2 refresh plans (the airtime cost I believe). Anyone know how this would work when paying off early?

Can I buy this on the £12 phone + £18 airtime contract (total £30) and do I need to pay 1 months line rental (airtime)?
Thanks
samabs
13 Jul 16 #42
I phoned o2 to upgrade 2 weeks ago. I ended up getting it for £240. Three have an offer of £10.50 for 6 months then £21 for 18 months and £99 up front.
So to keep me they waved the £139.99 up front cost on the 500mb and it's now £10 a month for 24 months or £240.
Pondlife
14 Jul 16 #43
As you don't pay the airtime cost it wouldn't really help
hzaman
14 Jul 16 #44
yes you can. I chose the £18 tariff and have since received the phone, paid off the device plan in full (£288) and cancelled my tariff. The o2 lady who dealt with my payment and request was kind enough to offer me the unlocking code free of charge when I told her I'd be using the phone with a sim from another network. I thought the phone was unlocked since it accepted my 3 sim, perhaps it wouldn't accept others. I gladly accepted her kind offer and decided to request the code anyway.
hzaman
14 Jul 16 #45
yes that is correct. also ask for the unlocking code.

Crossbow
23 Jul 16 #53
You can cancel straight away. But they may charge you anyway (by mistake possibly) like it happened to me ~2 years ago. Was refunded when I contacted them about it. So, check your bank statements for a 1-2 months after you've purchased this.

If you need them to unlock it (for free), then pay off the device plan & cancel airtime only after you've received the unlock code from them - nicely explained in the first post HERE by MrGamer123.
Crossbow
23 Jul 16 #54
Seems still on to me - where are you looking?
Crossbow
24 Jul 16 #55
Well after reading a comment on the related iPhone O2 refresh thread & to be more accurate, apparently you will be charged for the 1st month of airtime, then refunded later...

"The first bill is generated even before you get the phone, once you pay off the phone and cancel the agreement you get a revised bill. The revised one shows how to get a refund for the amount paid, this is then returned to you in a few days. Some of the customer service guys will tell you to cancel the direct debit, this is a wise thing to do, once the first months bill has come out at around 14 days to stop them taking further cash."
Crossbow
24 Jul 16 #56
Again, after reading a comment on the related iPhone O2 refresh thread...

"Paying off any credit early should not affect anyone's credit rating, we did this a few months ago, credit file is the same as it was before."

P.S. More about credit checks for these types of deals: Beware split tariff mobile contracts if you're about to apply for credit
gareths
24 Jul 16 #57
do they not charge you the full 24 month airtime as your breaking the contract aswel?
bluestreak56
24 Jul 16 #58
Maybe Im being a bit dim - do you need to be an existing customer for this offer?
When I click on the link I see the 20GB monthly plan but the price is £42 month without any handset cost which is £1008.

Cheapest monthly is £30/month = £720

Presuming this deal is only for those able to refresh?
zAndy1
24 Jul 16 #59
It's £42 per month but the phone element of this is only £12 pm = £288 over the 24 months, you pay off the phone part i.e. £288 and cancel the airtime part at no cost
Crossbow
25 Jul 16 #60
No, you don't need to be an existing customer. When you purchase an O2 refresh offer, you become a new O2 customer. But once you pay off your device plan, cancel airtime & get your unlock code, the phone is yours completely to do as you please - in other words, you are free of O2 & can pop in any other network's SIM (including your present one) & continue with them.

Yes, but you misunderstand the calculation in this type of deal (as posted on HUKD) - the £42 per month is split into 2 components:

1. The Device Plan (i.e. cost of the phone outright - which is going to be paid for upfront in full) &
2. The Airtime Plan (i.e. cost of the calls, texts & data - which is going to be cancelled immediately, so nothing more payable)

So, when you place the phone in your basket with the 20Gb tariff you'll see this:

http://i.imgur.com/7JEC7iu.png

The whole purchase, payment, unlock code procedure is nicely explained in the 1st post HERE by MrGamer123 - same principle applies to all O2 refresh deals posted at HUKD (including this one).

[Note: there are other deals there that total the same for Device Plan (DP) (i.e. £288), so you can choose any of those instead if you wish. Makes no difference as long as the total DP is £288 - ask if in doubt]:

If still in doubt, or need to know more, just post here or pm me.
Crossbow
25 Jul 16 #61
No, as long as you pay off the Device plan in full, you can cancel the Airtime plan immediately & not have to pay a penny more. See my post above for more details.

Also, quoted from the O2 website:

"How much does it cost to end your contract early on O2 Refresh? What do you charge for the leftover Airtime Plan?

With O2 Refresh, there’s no penalty for ending your contract early. All you have to do is pay off the balance of your Phone Plan.

There’s no termination charge for ending your Airtime Plan once you’ve settled your Phone Plan."

26 Jul 16 #67
Heya, went for this deal for my wife - phone arrived today (I am away at the moment though) - quick question though, do I need to get her to put the new O2 sim in it to activate the IMEI before we ring up and cancel the airtime for the unlock code, or can this all be done before the phone is even ever powered on? (referring back to the iPhone 6 thread for a similar deal where it stated this...)

Cheers,
Andrew.

Basically could be same price as posted here, i.e. £288, so may be cheaper/better(?) to directly Upgrade instead depending on the terms you agreed to. Usually for a fee, one can upgrade whenever they choose ('early upgrade') even if on a standard contract.

Read & follow the links below to see what may be best for you. Or, if it isn't that apparent online, call them (on 202 for free from your mobile) & ask which one would be the cheaper/better option for you - now & in the long run (i.e. if you are a regular upgrader, a 'refresh' contract may benefit you more than a standard one).

Can take from 1-7 days apparently: Unlocking an O2 mobile to use on a different network
Crossbow
27 Jul 16 #70
No, single SIM version only.

For future reference, it is quite rare for a UK mobile network (especially those who sell their phones pre-locked) to sell dual SIM models.

If you must have a dual-SIM mobile, you could get a OnePlus 3 (OP3) instead for a little more (£329 currently).

Crossbow
27 Jul 16 #71
1) Yes, as it is 'brand new', it will be just that - no different if buying new retail without this deal.

2) Once unlocked, it'll be just like any other unlocked phone. Might come with a little O2 bloat, but all / most is easily removable. Might still come with some Huawei 'bloat' though, which you cannot avoid even if you buy from another network provider.

If anyone doesn't mind a 'like new' P9 for a good discount, keep an eye on this offer posted today:

The refresh deal for a 'like new' P9 is even better at £192.

Has anyone managed to find a decent fast charger for this phone? Doesn't seem to work with any of my existing ones.
Crossbow
11 Aug 16 #77
Are the ones you've tried at least 9V 2A rated?

If not, have you specifically tried a Huawei-branded 9V 2A one?

Like this: ebay.co.uk/itm…054

Above comes from the Far East though, so could take 2-3 weeks to arrive.

Don't know why Huawei don't include a fast charger to begin with! It's a premium phone & would've cost them only a few £s extra. After all, what's a few £s extra if it's potentially going to attract more buyers?

Cheers for the reply, Crossbow. Yep, both 9V 2A, but sure I read somewhere that the phone isn't compatible with Qualcomm quick-charging?

Will have a look at the eBay link, thanks. Agreed about it not being included, very frustrating, and will lose them sales to the likes of the Oneplus 3, which I think includes the appropriate charger.
Crossbow
11 Aug 16 #81
Yes, you're right - not a single Huawei phone mentioned in their support phone list (PDF file).

Just found out the only one that works for quick-charging capable Huawei phones is the official Huawei quick charger.

**WARNING**

This deal may cause some annoying stress!!

I bought this deal at £288 for my wife, who needed a new phone and had been eyeing the P9.
When it arrived, before switching it on, I attempted to call customer services. Due to my hours that week, I ended up on hold for 40+minutes 3 days in a row then hung up on never managing to speak to anyone (as it was between 2000-2100).

I had a day off on the Friday and called them in the morning. I was met with confusion at the request to cancel the airtime and pay off the phone. I was informed that this was not possible and I would need to wait until after the 14day period in order to cancel the airtime or pay the phone.
I reminded them that this is 2 seperate credit agreements, both of which have a 14day cool off period, that asking me to wait until beyond this period would make me liable for charges and requesting me to do this deliberately was not legal. I also pointed out that it was possible for me to go to the "My O2" portal online and pay for the phone, leaving only the airtime to cancel, and asked him what was different about phoning up to do it - he did not have an answer for that.
I asked to speak to a manager and was told they would have to call me back within 48hours. I told them this was unacceptable, and long story short, got to speak to them. He tried the same line that it was not possible to do what I asked. I then read him a few lines from O2's own terms and conditions, after which he said it would appear that it is possible. He then passed me through to retentions who took payment for the phone and cancelled the airtime.

So; considerable wasted time on the phone to customer services.

Now we get to today - I receive an email with a bill for £575! Looking at the pdf it is stated as an early termination fee. Similarly, they have taken £30 via DD from my account (I have been on nights so forgot to cancel it on my account), which is the wrong amount anyhow given the device plan was already paid in full (should have been around £20 if I was using the account).
Anyhow, hopped on to the online chat and sorted this out. The advisor was helpful and noted that it had all been done within the 14 days. She has cancelled the early termination fee, and has arranged for the £30 to be credited back to my account. I have also since cancelled the DD on my account!

Incidentally - the phone arrived unbranded and unlocked.

So all-in-all yes it is possible to get this deal, however it seems that YMMV regarding how savvy the people you speak to in O2 are with sorting out the details. So long as you're prepared for some extensive hold music, repeat calls and the occasional lenghty explanations to O2 customer service representatives/managers then you will be fine, and hopefully the process will be more smooth than mine.

Just thought I'd give fair warning to those yet to jump in on this deal.

Cheers,
Andrew.

If anyone who bought it & still following this thread....some good news guys about a Nougat update for O2's P9...

Another 1-2 weeks, O2 are finally releasing their own - from Kris_K at the O2 forums: community.o2.co.uk/t5/…/12

"I've got some good news from our device team, folks!

We've now approved the Nougat update for the Huawei P9 and P9 Lite and have sent this back to Huawei for schedule/release - typically this happens within 1-2 weeks, but sometimes sooner/later, so keep your eyes peeled and you'll hopefully have this soon.

P9 Plus customers, no new updates to share just yet - we're awaiting the new software to begin testing but once we've more details to share, we'll let you know."

On the next page, cornetuk says:
"Yay! Update is now available via OTA. I'll go for it tonight [that's tonight]."
