Just a tip for those that have already purchased this laptop. Go to the HP Support Assistant application and check the warranty start date. This should be the same as the invoice date but in my case it was the date of manufacture so the date was out by around a month. If the warranty date is incorrect for you call HP support on 02079490416 and inform them the date is wrong and you want it started from the invoice date.

They will raise a ticket and send you an email asking for a copy of your invoice. Once you send them an email back with the invoice they will take around 5 days to update the warranty dates.

The model you want is Probook 400 440 G3 - P5T15EA - 01/07/2016 – 31/07/2016

Basically you trade in a qualifying model (they send you free P&P) - but note: this can include ANY AGE Windows XP computers so you can pick one up from your attic/ parents/ carboot sale/ Ebay for £10 etc.

Very reliable payers. In the past I had a refusal (my invoice was imperfect) but I just phoned the HP dudes and they credited me with my cashback there & then, excellent customer service.

For your Trade-in to qualify for the promotion it must be a working, complete and undamaged, (reasonable wear and tear accepted) Laptop (minimum 10” screen size), Tablet (minimum 9” screen size) or Desktop. Your Trade-in must be no more than 6 years old (age limitations are not applicable to genuine Microsoft XP computers) and complete with all accessories including working battery and power supply where applicable.

luvsadealdealdeal
20 Jul 16 1 #20
I understand the caution - it is £200 after all. The first few times I went for HP cashback, I was similarly concerned.

But it's not a gamble in the sense that getting cashback from TCB or Quidco is always a bit of a gamble.

Provided you get an invoice with your name & address on it & meet the Trade in conditions (which are clearly set out), HP guarantee to give you the appropriate cashback.

You're not relying on a cookie tracking etc.

Read the many HUKD threads on the HP cashback deals last year. Pretty much 100% success rate in all cases.

Never had any issues with HP cashback. Took advantage a few years ago to upgrade 4 family laptops. From memory the highest cashback was £150 and each time we part exchanged working XP desktops that were ancient. It was very efficient with prepaid labels provided to send the machines off. Waiting was the main issue as it can literally take nearly two months for the cash to hit your account depending on how quickly they assess your part ex. Would I go for this? Tempted but, one of the ProBooks we got 3 years ago has a failed graphics card and is a bitch to repair so I'm on the lookout for a new one. Two of the Probooks (mine included) had a bloody annoying issue with the built in touch pad. Persevered for over a year and then upgraded to Windows 10 - which solved the issue!

Simply never an issue.

You either just ignore it or give yourself a sole trading name such as Josh Trading - best to make sure it matches on your invoice & your claim.

All perfectly legal & above board, plenty of people are both employees and sole traders, think of state school teachers doing a bit of paid exam marking or 1 to 1 tuition.

It's enough just to even imagine that sometime in the future you will start a sole trader sideline and want to set yourself up with a computer.

I strongly suspect that cashback will be paid based on the purchase price excluding VAT - eg £421. So you'll get £150 rather than £200 back from HP.
This is a business focused deal so ex VAT is usually assumed.

Top deal! Thanks OP... ordered from ebuyer instead as marginally more reliable than Misco. To be fair to them it has already despatched

Been looking for a reasonably spec'd Windows 7 notebook for my wife that's valiantly given up on trying to learn how to use her MacBook after 5 years, and stubbornly refusing an upgrade to Windows 10 from her work IT dept.

Will throw HP a lovely little Samsung NC10 Windows XP netbook from 2008 for their troubles.

I used to work in IT B2B sales, and can concur that HP cashback claims are very reliable. Even on the off chance of a rejection, this is normally resolved and processed. It can be quite slow though!

Man, this is very tempting. Still rocking a 2009 laptop, and just started to edit 1080p video, very tempted to jump.
OH has the AMD A8 HP455 G2 was posted on here a year ago with £250 cash back, would go again.

We did have an issue with the trade in, as the "assessment company" said that the Mobo was dead on arrival - I'd had it running DamnSmallLinux before I'd sent it, and run memtest86+ on it as well, so took a video for "evidence" just for my sanity.
Sent this to HP as a complaint, they instantly apologised and offered the full trade in amount.
A little bit of self protection goes a long way

If I recall, you do need to ensure what you return can be powered as any faults like missing keys, cracked screen on laptops/tablets, missing power cables will deduct the cashback amount.

Once had very old working XP baseunit with power cable sent for validation for full cashback but got reduced due to not powering on even it was working perfectly fine just before despatch. Turns out the motherboard battery was dead prior during testing not powering the Bios to boot was at fault. I disputed this prior to despatch was working perfectly fine & that the XP baseunit was not powered while waiting for testing session hence suggested I send some new batteries to retest for full cashback amount. I did received the full amount at the end without having to send new batteries so was happy with my previous deal purchase here. Got mine from Technoworld.

Just managed to upgrade mine to Win10 Pro with Classic Shell last night.

Might need to dig deeper into the T&C's if faults do affect cashback amount apply to this promotion.

Most retailers dropship from a distributor rather than stocking products themselves. When I ordered mine from ebuyer the other day it was shipped directly to me by Westcoast who are the biggest HP distributor.

I just checked stockinthechannel.com which shows live stock at all the distributors of any product and the 2 main ones are now sold our (Westcoast and Ingram Micro), so you'll need to hunt for retailers that are actually holding them in stock. Try CCL, Insight, Dabs/BTbusinessdirect/BTshop and unfortunately Misco.

They are asking this for accounting purposes. How they account for the £200 rebate they are giving you (it's better for them if you are VAT registered as they can claw some of it back from the taxman).

But there is no need to be VAT registered, even businesses only need to be if they turnover £83k+ in a year.

might be a risk that if your business is VAT registered they take off 20% and give you a rebate on £400-odd, ie a lower rebate

Risky as invoice date will be date of shipping. HP might accept an order confirmation email as proof of purchase though if you're lucky...

Reading through all this, I have another couple of questions re Win 10. Am I right in thinking that since this has Win 7 as an OS as a "downgrade" from Win 10, then you are not limited timewise for the free Win 10 upgrade. Basically, mine should arrive tomorrow but if I'm right there's no need to upgrade to Win 10 immediately?

On a similar note, I've seen that Win 10 comes with the item on disc but of course there is no internal cd drive with this machine, so I'm curious to know how people will be upgrading to Win 10 if they don't intend to use the MS free upgrade which I believe end tomorrow night.

Hope that makes some sort of sense.

Just set mine up. Using the DVD (external USB drive) you're doing a fresh install of Windows 10, it was activated already once setup so not sure how that part is happening as there's no serial to enter at any stage.

Impressive laptop for the cash!
aduk to thethinwhiteduke
28 Jul 16 2 #89
If you would like to "upgrade" then tomorrow is the deadline to do it for free via Microsoft's own scheme from within Windows 7.

However, if you'd like to clean install (the Windows 10 disc it comes with is recovery media and will force you to erase your hard drive). Then you'll need to a) do a backup of all your docs, etc. and b) find/buy a USB DVD drive. There is no deadline to use this option as it comes with the media.

I can't speak for HPs agent, but if the trade-in device does not still have its XP licence sticker available then it will probably not qualify. If you could show an invoice quoting both the device's serial number and mention of XP you may have a stronger argument, but if the mandatory qualification is a specific piece of sticky paper then you are probably still out of luck.
thethinwhiteduke
28 Jul 16 #92
Sure I can get hold of an external dvd somewhere if required. I'm guessing a clean install would be the better method. At least then there's no time pressure and presumably you could get rid of any bloatware that may come preinstalled on the machine?
aduk
28 Jul 16 1 #93
I'm sure the installation media is suitably laced with bloatware

All joking aside HP's business machines aren't quite as laden as their consumer ones... a few awful apps to "assist" in upgrading drivers etc, some encryption & backup software, DVD playback software (again amusing since no drive) and a PDF writer. Then the standard Office 2016 trial and an extremely old version of Skype. Then weirdly Apple Application Support & Bonjour. That's about it...

Ebuyer order cancelled due no stock but ordered immediately via Misco on 27th July 2016. Despatched the next day & just got mine this morning. Bang on time for upgrade to Win10 Pro even with 3 day delivery via Parcelforce.

Looks like it came all the way from Glasgow with TCB tracking at £15.46 + better than QC tracking at £6.61

Now need to sort out Trade up to HP & hope both pay up like the previous deal.

Just to add, distributor is Westcoast Limited & label claims "This system is pre-installed with Windows 7 Pro software and also comes with a license and media for Windows 10 Pro software. You may only use one version of Windows software at a time. Switching between versions will require you to uninstall one version and install the other version."

I don't think they even check the XP installation. I sent them an ancient desktop with XP licence sticker from which I had removed the upgraded harddrive and replaced with an even more ancient and infamous Fujitsu 20GB failing drive that I think contained random drivers for win7 - not even an operating system. That box still qualified for the cashback. I assume as long as it has a legitimate XP sticker, boots to BIOS and doesn't look like it's worse for wear from football practice, the cashback claim will be fine.

From what I can gather, the laptop allows for a single M2 card (presume sata, rather than pcie) and a standard 2.5in sata drive. Therefore, if you buy the ssd variant, the standard sata bay should be available - if you buy a version with a standard HDD, then the m2 slot will be available. At least, that's the impression i get - would be great is anyone can confirm though.

I don't think HP do anything much with the odds & sods we send in. My guess is they can get something back from MS for the XP product keys. Then I assume they can send the W7 & W8 machines for proper recycling, ie somebody will be taking bulk loads off their hand for next to nothing and making a bob or two by reselling the licences or even decent working machines.

My analysis would suggest this is just a tactic to clear the supply chain of older stock without annoying distribution partners too much. Ie the distributors are still getting full prices & not being left with slow-moving products. Whereas HP is taking the (say) £200 hit per machine and calling it marketing investment. HP gets to see new product fill the gaps left when this older stuff gets shifted.

And all ostensibly to business customers, again to keep distributors from moaning too much.
dickybow
11 Aug 16 #181
Sorry but you have misinterpreted my comment that the £9.99 for the tablet was too cheap when they usually sell for £30 in the UK.

Overall, mixed feelings about the laptop - nice and light, good upgrade-ability (important for me) and the TPM & Fingerprint reader give it some good built-in security. Oh and battery life has been incredible for me.

That said, the touchpad could and should be much bigger - it's far too small, especially as it has physical button reducing the touch pad area further. But my biggest letdown is the lack of back-lit keyboard - Last 4 laptops I've had have had this, so didn't even occur to me that it might not have it.

I'll see how I get on with it, but may change it in due course.

As for UEFI & Windows 10...

Win 10 was simple (for me). Having an external DVD drive helped, though the same process should apply if you choose to create a USB installer. (You can do this by downloading the installer from MS, and choosing 'create media' or something like that IIRC)

First (optional, but advised), enable UEFI - can't remember the exact wording, but in the bios in one of the sub-menus there's a tick box called 'Legacy Boot Order' and beneath it a list of drives (USB, M2, Network).
Below this, another tick box named 'UEFI Boot Order', again with 'USB, M2' below it.

Tick the UEFI box, which should untick Legacy. Save and reboot - this will switch your computer to UEFI mode, and your computer will complain no OS is installed.

Insert the DVD/USB stick, restart and you will be asked to boot to the relevant drive.

Follow the setup steps. When you get to a screen with a list of partitions - select each one and DELETE it - you will be left with a single 'unallocated' partition. Select it, NEXT

That's it - win 10 will install. Once done, use the second DVD to pick any additional drivers you want to install.

Well, I finally got there, but only after much pain and grief. I couldn't do the 'official' upgrade via the DVDs for a couple of reasons. I tried downloading the ISO but it hung on Upgrading. The cause, as I found out from another thread, was due to me not doing the 106 updates to Windows 7. I hadn't bothered as I wasn't going to run on it anyway. Once I did the updates, the Win10 ISO downloaded and installed sweetly. In all, it took from 13:15 to 23:15 yesterday!!

Personally, I don't think a buyer should need to download an operating system when DVDs have been provided. I also don't think a buyer should be messing about deleting partitions in BIOS. It should simply be a matter of slapping a DVD into an external drive and away it should go.

Thanks to you guys who responded.

have you checked to see if that model is on the 'trade up to HP' list?
akajay07
18 Aug 16 #216
The 450 would be the model you're referring to but none of them come with a 1080p display, sadly. Think I'll just have to pay the extra and get the HP 250 listed elsewhere on this site.

Just updated to Windows 10. I bought an optical drive from Amazon. For installation, I restarted the computer from the dvd drive and it installed the new operating system.
The old window was moved to another folder window.old. It's not a clean install but I think this will preserve the backup/restore function from HP.

I had sent an old 10" Acer Iconia tab for the trade-up and received a confirmation email today that everything was accepted.

Really happy with this purchase. Thanks OP!

I ordered the drive mounting kit as I have purchased another SSD drive. The mounting kit comes with just 4 screws to attach the SSD to the included mount but there are no additional screws to attach the mount to the laptop. Whilst I can still plug the SSD drive into the laptop it could potentially come loose. I have sent an email to HP to check if they have not sent the additional screws by mistake or I need to order the screws separately. I will update the thread once I have an answer.

Just to provide an update on this - HP were useless in providing me information on which screws I needed, they didn't have a clue. I found some spare screws I had laying around which I believe were M2.5x5mm and they fit. You need to get 4 of these to secure the bay to the laptop. They were Philips screw heads.

A question for anyone who has picked up the laptop: the body looks aluminium but the cover looks matt black plastic. Is that correct? For some reason I thought it was fully aluminium. Cheers for any help!
veedubjai
28 Aug 16 2 #230
Yes, top cover is like soft touch matt black plastic with surrounding keyboard area in aluminium. Bottom is hard touch matt black plastics. Very doubt you'll get a brand new full aluminium case laptop for this price even before cashback & trade-in let alone in this size of laptop.
luvsadealdealdeal
29 Aug 16 #231
just been downstairs to do a bit of 'touch & feel' on our model - not as good as yours I think, 450 G2? - but similar styling

veedubjai is absolutely right, hope I wasn't guilty of false hopes, elaborating etc

but the aluminium is what strikes you, so it feels real BMW quality

in normal use it's like aluminium, aluminium, aluminium because that's what you see when typing

odd

they used to run trade up to HP + bonus

trade up to HP - same as now

bonus - you had to claim your bonus after 30 days but before 61 days after purchase - that's ow last year some of us got extremely cheap laptops, as the bonus was about £100 or so depending on model

https://tradeuptohp.com/gb/en/pages/tradein/terms

they don't say if you can have a second go!

you could do worse than ring them up & ask - they are very pleasant to talk to - my guess is: if you have time, they'd probably let you try a second device

They have changed the T&Cs for September purchases from what I can see online. A broken part or missing power unit used to just cost you (say) £20 deduction, but I can't see that bit any more. I think it's pasted in earlier on this thread, though - no point looking if it doesn't apply any more.

Fairly sure broken motherboard was not that serious.

Anecdote suggests that they don't care much about XPs - just the COA sticker etc - but W7 & W8s must be properly working, I guess they have a value

It appears the XP desktops have been removed from the trade-ins. Conditions say:-
"Fully operational, complete and undamaged.
No more than 6 years old."
The fully operational bit I guess is the relevant bit. Guess the question is how obviously knackered your laptop is. They may just need to see the license sticker; or see the BIOS screen? I haven't used this offer recently - others may have more experience.

Got my laptop today from technoworld and sent my claim form to hp but wanting to know if anyone can help-sending my old i7 laptop to them but recently fitted a new ssd drive in it(presume that is ok for qualifying) and updated from windows 7 to windows 10 but would it be possible to take the ssd drive out and replace it back to my old laptop drive which I still have-obviously I know how to switch it back but confused with the part where with the ssd drive having windows 10 on it and the old drive which I just took out had everything on it with windows 7- (no cloning involved) so how would this work as really I would like to keep my fairly new ssd drive and put it in my pc.
If I remember rightly it was just a quick replacement of drives and a completely new fresh install of windows 10 onto the ssd drive, obviously with taking the old hard drive out all my information was lost for the new ssd purposes which I was not bothered about.
luvsadealdealdeal
8 Sep 16 #269
first get your windows 10 activation key XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX (eg use 'magical jelly bean keyfinder' to find it) and save it somewhere safe
change SSD for old laptop drive
do fresh install of W10
with any luck it will accept your machine configuration as proof enough - ie you skip the product key bit & let the W10 stuff find it for itself
if it fails (because you changed the hardware configuration, which is what it uses to validate) and doesn't like your product key when you put it in manually, then phone Microsoft Windows Activation number/ people with your activation key and they will activate you again for sure

11 Oct 16 #286
That £9.99 deal was a non-sender after all as was too good to be true for that price as the seller never replied my messages but eBay was there to help & refunded my money. Check my last comment #201 as that was what I bought from another seller for the trade-in but unit price have already gone up.

Prices never stand still. The vote for Brexit has had an impact on prices as well the value of the Pound recently as I have noticed electronics have gone up even though the UK have not officially actually left the EU yet & retailers are taking advantage on this.

I bought one of these this week from Misco, but it looks like there are no more in stock at the moment. It looks like there is a "G4" version of this ProBook G3 440 which has just been released, which now includes a more recent processor and the addition of a USB Type C port. But provided I do actually get back the £200 from the HP Trade Up deal, this really is a fantastic deal - fairly recent Core i5 processor, 256GB m.2 SSD, 14" Full HD display, fairly lightweight, nice design, Windows 10 Pro etc.
My biggest challenge was understanding how to do the upgrade to Windows 10 with the included DVD's, as the HP instructions were very unclear. It mentioned changes being required to the BIOS for the UEFI settings, without really explaining what those changes were. After waiting for 1 hour for HP to respond to my chat request on their website, I gave up and just went ahead with what I thought the settings needed changing to. In the end, HP called me back the next day and confirmed the BIOS settings, and I had indeed changed them correctly. For anybody who wants to know, for upgrading from Windows 7 to Windows 10, the BIOS settings should be changed as follows (copy & paste of instructions which I received back from HP):

In the BIOS, under ADVANCED tab >> Secure Boot Configuration >> Legacy Support Enable and Secure Boot Disable. Since you are upgrading from Windows 7, this setting is already set correctly but please do check once.

Again under ADVANCED tab >> Boot Options >> Kindly enable 'UEFI Boot Order' and 'Legacy Boot Order'.

No age limit XP no longer works. HP have changed the T&Cs again. Theoretically XP would work if the device is not older than 7 years - pretty unlikely but possible. T&Cs:

For your Trade-in to qualify for the promotion it must be a working, complete and undamaged, (reasonable wear and tear accepted) Laptop (minimum 10” screen size), Tablet (minimum 9” screen size) or Desktop. Your Trade-in must be no more than 7 years old and complete with all accessories including working battery and power supply where applicable.
