Can this max out graphics on something like battlefield or doom?

Battlefield 4 yeah at 45fps. BF 1 not so sure. It should max out Doom as well <60fps

I have a similar laptop with an 870m. I ran through Doom on normal difficulty at 1080p/High, but then started Nightmare and I had to drop to 900p. Not sure why that is or if it was just some coincidence with a driver update or something, but it was at 60fps. You should have no trouble with this.

absolutely not unless on very low settings. The gpu is less than an equivalent of the gtx660

Always best to add the spec so people on mobiles don't have to be checking links. Heat added

Also is the i7 processor in this capable of video editing/rendering? My i3 laptop and i5 pc are extremely slow.

It will be faster than an i3/i5, though I'm not sure why an i3 or i5 would be slow to render.

It doesnt have gigabit ethernet, that is bonkers, I mean just how little would that cost the manufacturer to add.

The description is incorrect mate, it HAS gigabit ethernet, I just checked on mine- it has Realtek GBE interface.
It would be stupid not to include that in high spec laptop.
And wireless effortlessly achieves full 200mbit i have from VirginMedia too, thanks to 'ac' standard
Edit- just to add- the laptop boots up in 4 seconds thanks to UEFI bios, as I said- on wireless its as good as on wire, the graphic card is much more efficient than my desktop's 660GTX and the quality is better than MSI gaming laptops that have similar prices.
Actually, the quality is better than 99.9% of all laptops on the market.
But...I paid 1200 pounds few months ago...for appr 800 pounds it's a steal

That's an incredible spec for the money. 970m is usually in the realm of the £1000 laptop and that's not counting the i7, 16gb RAM and SSD

Good deal bu rumors of next generation of laptops with new Mobile Nvidia GTX1060 in the next few months but price likely to be 400-500 quid higher - but this still a good deal if you do a lot of Gaming /Photo editing / video editing and encoding

Ignore Bobo, he seems upset about something. 970m paired with i7 will give 30fps at 4k. It'll give 60fps at 1080p no trouble at all.
Thanks for that info. Dont want to spend £800 to find out i have to run things in low settings like bobo has said.

Will this still be worth it running the painful Windows 8 given that the Windows 10 upgrade will no longer be free?

if you like to play at low fps it is ok otherwise you need to lower the settings drastically. Here we play with sli/cf's about 6 times the power of this card and we always find problems to get decent fps. Just good for a laptop but wasting of money in a way. With £800 you can build a decent desktop pc far more powerful than this laptop. Anyway I do not get people that are at all costs happy to play at lower frames, it is really annoying. As an example, on a 30hz monitor=30pfs max feel, how can you play a game at that fps, or even at 45 or so in a 60hz tv/monitor. Anything less than 55fps should not be considered hence the need to lower the settings for a smooth not annoying game play. Anyway, just got one myself to play space invaders in bed hoping it will not lag that much.
Beware of the way they conduct these reviews especially when it comes to a laptop and if you want to take it in consideration, this GPU is slightly less than a 5 years old gtx660

I agree, but everyone perceives frame rate differently. I cant stomach under 60fps it makes me literally nauseous, but most seem fine with anything over 30fps. With a GTX 970 I could play gta 5 at 60fps across 3 monitors (3240x1080) if i sacrificed shadow and vegetation quality, it looked pretty damn good but most importantly very smooth. So a 970m on a single monitor with a few tweaks should reach pretty good frame rates IMO, its all a balancing act. The fact it has gsync is a huge bonus.
For £800 he isn't going to get better than a 970m. However, If were him id just buy a PC instead.

What would you suggest then? I need a laptop not a desktop and i want to play games on it at a decent quality aswel as need it to do video editing etc. Budget is about 1k.

Don't listen to him. Look at notebookcheck as that guy stated. It'll churn through games at 1080p easily. It's a very tasty deal for a gtx 970m laptop, which even has in-built G-Sync and an IPS display. The laptop also allows for GPU overclocking.
Performance looks V good, 54 fps on BF4 with ultra settings at 1080p. 40 fps on DOOM with ultra settings at 1080p.
Bobo is clearly clueless

30 Jul 16#30
well, if you got no option then this laptop is nearly the best you can find and I must admit that the price is good. My argument was against people that do not know what they are talking about when it comes to gaming. If they are happy they are happy but do not expect miracle, just lower the settings for a very smooth play

I've got a high-end overclocked 980 Ti PC, but everyone else other than you has adjusted their expectations accordingly. People who buy laptops should never expect 1080p/60fps on ultra settings with new games for under £1200.
However, 30fps and higher is a good standard - which is better performing than consoles as well.
Laptops should never be compared directly to desktop PCs because the price/performance ratio is sky high for the smaller parts. For a gaming LAPTOP this is a great deal, even back at £879 which this currently sits at now.

Build a gaming PC or wait till the more expensive laptop models reduce in price. 1080p 60fps will be the norm for laptops of this price soon.

your desktop gtx660 is better or equal at worse than the gtx970m, you should change the CPU possibly on the desktop because must be very weak, tell me what you got and might help to verify. On the other hand the cpu of this laptop is strong hence the better performance of the gtx970m
