Pretty sure you need 2GB of RAM for the Android version.
http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/you-might-need-upgrade-phone-pokemon-go/
"The problem is that Pokemon Go requires a minimum 2GB of RAM. If you have less than that, you won’t be able to download it through the Google Play store and will be forced to acquire the APK from an unofficial source and sideload it.
This is less than ideal, as it can expose your phone to malware. There have already been documented examples of malware masquerading as Pokemon Go APKs. It also means you won’t receive updates as they’re released. The current state of Pokemon Go could charitably be described as rough. It’s inevitable that in the coming months, much-needed patches and performance updates will be released.
You’re also likely to encounter significant performance issues, with gameplay being stuttery and sluggish."
I'm not sure this Alcatel Pixi is the best bet for a resource intensive game

The question regarding pokemon go also requires a gyroscope which this may not have.

Agreed.
A recommended Pokemon Go device looks like this:
2GB RAM
Huge Battery
Gyro
Such a device is not cheap (around £150 for a G4)
However for £40 it's a decent enough child's phone.

OP - you need to add "Locked to Virgin" in there somewhere.
Does anyone have any other suggestions for a budget (sub £90) handset that's from a UK seller? I said I'd look for my friends kid who's needing one soon. Ideally, something with a sub 5" screen. Doesn't need to be octa core or a 20mp camera etc!

A 480p screen of entry level quality with regards to colour, brightness etc so close to your eyes is not gonna be pretty, on a 5" device you'd perhaps be OK with 720p though...depends how particular you are about the sharpness of the content!
On the topic of APKs, they don't have to be risky, just ask a pal with it (Pokémon Go, of course!) installed to extract the apk using an app from the store.
Remember, each time there's an update you'll need to reinstall via apk, as it won't update through the store

To be honest mate, you don't know what your talking about. Some phones are good some are bad. The problem with small mind idiots like you, is the name. All you guys want is apple, which is far less superior to android. But i wont go into that debate. For the price point, you show me a 5" model for around that price. Samsungs are great, but they are double this. The end of day, i have learned a £30-40 for a phone, is the modest I pay. Your end up killing it, or it will break. So not worth the waste of cash

Lee, you've never been much of an expert on anything tech related. So I wouldn't go making out you are now.
FYI - in absolute performance terms, Apple/iOS is pulling Android's pants down at the moment. The processor/optimisation is leagues ahead of Android. So whichever way you try to slice this, Android isn't much cop.
Lee...some people don't want similar specs for the money. They want the specs that allow them to get the job done in the quickest time possible....whilst also perhaps taking photos/videos that will actually be of some note in years to come.
If you can make do with this Pixi, then more power to you. But for most people, spending a chunk of extra money will pay dividends in terms of time saved.
As an example, if an iPhone loads things 2x as fast as this Pixi (v.v.conservative estimate), then you will waste probably 5 minutes per day waiting for things to load. Extrapolate that over the year, and you will have wasted 1825 minutes....or 30 hours of your time.
Now spread that over the course of a normal 2 year contract - and you will have potentially wasted 60 hours waiting for your phone to do things. If you put a value on your time, and use your phone a lot, then this Pixi is a poor investment

but dont take my word for it. let me give you a link so you can compare what they have found. There are million other reports like this.

I really am not an Apple fan. If you look at my deal history, you will see that I have actually been flogging the dead horse that is Windows Phone.
The painful reality for people running Android is that iPhone's are MUCH faster, are much more secure, have constant security updates, and have the best app quality/reliability.
Android is a jack of all trades...master of none.
Oh, and you can pick up an iPhone 6 from O2 right now for £189. So the price to performance ratio isn't obscene....especially if you factor in the amount of time you waste faffing about with your Pixi.
(As for my comment regarding your - lack of - tech expertise. I've replied to you numerous times on HUKD across a myriad of different threads. You tend to be clueless about most things you comment on....which is why your name resonates every time I see it. HE Info Tech or not, you don't know much about tech)
Oh, and the comparison I have made is fair - because I am factoring in the time you waste faffing about with a cheap/low performance phone with the time saved using a faster one. If your time is worth anything, then the benefits of paying extra for a faster device become more apparent.

23 Jul 16#49
No i disagree with you completely your remark I admit i dont know everything. Why would i waste my life in trying to find out everything about things i am never going to use. But, there is plenty of video and documentary evidence arguments which platform is better.
I dont know how old you are, or if you from old skool generation, of apppe vs ms. But that path generally steers which direction you go in.
If you look at the amount of apps available for the two, you will see that software develops who they are steering towards. Which makes common sense, as android is linux. Linux has been commonly know to be better preforming than its competitors.
I guess it is just a personal taste. But I find it funny you see people with taped up phones, or cracked screens. As they drooped them. My point being, if you are clumsy, and there are allot of us out there are. Think twice about spending a shed load of cash on something could get broke, lost or dye. Within a certain period of time.
iOS has far higher user satisfaction, far lower levels of churn to other OS's, far better security than Android...multiple years of software updates, and MUCH faster system performance.
3D cameras, 4k screens, multi window support etc etc are all gimmicks at this point.
There's a reason why Apple can charge what they do. It's because their phones just work...& because apps come to that platform first, and perform better too.
Enjoy your pixi.
