This is a bit of a niche deal but may be useful for anyone going to certain countries this year on holiday. PC World and Currys have the Huawei E5573 (4G) for £19.99 (half price). You can then take up the rolling monthly contact (I think the minimum is 2 months but I might be wrong) So total cost for 2 months is £66. If you time it correctly you will get 20GB for the first week abroad and 20GB for the second week.
Feel At Home, let's you use your in-plan allowances
I've just set it up and got 19Meg download speeds.
The Feel at Home countries are
Australia Macau
Austria New Zealand
Denmark Norway
Finland Republic of Ireland
France Spain
Hong Kong Sri Lanka
Indonesia Switzerland
Israel Sweden
Italy USA
If you use it for countries not on the list you will get a very hefty bill
I imagine that once you have cancelled after 2 months that it will become a PAYG dongle.

I tried this last October in New York and got a screen that says Feel At Home can't be used to tether and to insert the SIM into a handset or 3G/4G tablet. Have the rules changed?

I'm with three and they stopped tethering abroad a couple of years ago. The dongle however is a data only package so tethering I not applicable - hopefully:)

I reckon the 12GB sims from Three @ £23 are a better option for most people (given that most people average around 500MB of data use per month)

You can enjoy Feel At Home whether you’re on Pay Monthly or Pay As You Go, using a tablet, phone, Mobile Wi-Fi or dongle. On all our Pay Monthly plans, except Three Essential plans, you’ll automatically use your monthly unit allowance and Add-on unit allowance to call and text the UK and use data, and if you’re on Pay As You Go you'll need to convert your Pay As You Go credit into an Add-on to get an unit allowance to fully enjoy Feel At Home.
If you joined Three from 12 July 2016 on one of our new Essential plans, as these don’t include Feel At Home, the below information doesn’t apply to you. Any usage in these destinations will be charged at the roaming rates set out in our Essential plans price guide.
There's a 5% off code kicking about somewhere. (Or maybe it's TCB/Quidco).

The problem here is that to get the PAYG 4G Mifi costs £60. The 1 month contact costs £60 including the data and mifi.

I was going to get one until I realised it was Three and they don't cover Portugal.

When I was in the US earlier this year on a Three sim, it's didn't work on 4G. As part of the 'terms' it was only 3G.
In a smart phone, that was one hell of a bottleneck and the data got clogged up quite often, pages didn't open, email stopped working.
Ok, it's a free add on, but was more frustrating having it than not.

I'm on Life Mobile and thus never have 4G access. Never been a problem. I can stream iPlayer, watch YouTube videos etc.
I would therefore be inclined to blame the US network you were on rather than 3G itself.

i used a payg 3 sim with FaH addon in France last year. While I was able to get basic 2/3g access which was fine for social media the speeds were very poor and coverage patchy - certainly not up to the job of streaming. I've also used it more recently in southern Ireland, again speed and coverage was patchy. If you google on the topic you will read about lots of unhappy customers who feel duped by Three. Their partner networks in other countries appear to be very slow so if you are expecting the same performance as at home you may be disappointed.

I'm in the roi alot and never had a problem. Force your phone to connect to 02 if your not getting a three signal.

Worth noting you can buy one of these on the Three website for £69.99 including 12 GB of 4G data to use in 12 months. The website shows the price as £79.99 but it comes down by £10 when you add it to your basket. If you need to use a lot of data in a short space of time the OP deal is better. HOT!

The Feel At Home page says quite explicitly that they throttle video streaming and VPN traffic when abroad so probably nothing to do with being 3G.

I appreciate it's a data only package, but you still have to connect a device to the mifi or it's just an ornament! This is the set up i had in October and wasn't able to use it because my phone, laptop, and tablet, all displayed an error to say that i couldn't connect to the services unless i put the sim directly into the device, not the MiFi. But hopefully if you know that's changed, this is great, otherwise, I can confirm that in October 2015, this did not work.

It's probably 1~2mb speeds at most.... It's bearable to upload the old pictures and social media but that's it... Where as if I activate roaming on my EE sim whoooooosh

I use a VPN that puts my location as UK. Always find immediately get full speeds then when abroad, Three have openly admitted in forums online they throttle your bandwidth when abroad. Try install a VPN before you go and switch on to UK when you away if speeds feel slow on normal network. Works a treat (Spain, Ireland)

Which vpn can you use?
MrHot
18 Jul 16#23
Is there any rollover? If so you don't even need to time it so specifically and simply use double the allowance in the 2nd month.
Hi there,
Which VPN service are you using when in Spain and Ireland ?
Thanks

Bought one yesterday. You have to take the monthly package, but when I told the assistant I was planning to use a PAYG data sim (£23 one) he gave me £20 discount.
The monthly package is £15 per month (5gb) , and you need to give 30 days notice to cancel. Got home, called Three and gave 30 days notice to cancel. I confirmed that it works in Feel-at-home countries.
Result...4G Mi-fi for £15 with 5gb data to use. (and got my 90 days of Deezer Premium free too)
For info, the 90 day (3Gb) and 1 year (12Gb) sims are prepaid accounts and hence they are valid in feel-at-home countries when you look at their website.

As the Mifi is THREE branded, does that mean its Unlocked?
Excuse my ignorance... But am I right in assuming that if I have a Data Sim and I place it in this, I can have portable wifi? I'm confused as some people say tethering is not allowed... If thats the case then what is this useful for?

Yes the Mifi is locked to 3 network and it is a portable wifi . But I have found three to be the cheapest payg SIM cards for 12gb

Good to know - possibly it was where I was last week - Donegal. I tried on 3 and O2 but it was poor. Will try some other locations and see how it goes. Will also test out the VPN workaround as suggested.

I got the mifi for £10, I just asked for discount and he was happy to take off £10. When I called Three they let me cancel the whole contract, I did not have to pay the £15 for one month (the 2gb £10 deal was not available in store) and I can keep the device.

Will give it a go. Did find on two occasions turning off the VPN in Majorca speeded me up again, so maybe they got wise to it. Good old on and off though usually helped! But downloading VyprVPN as we speak for next trip away. Thanks

hi guys, minimum term for this contract is 1 month. basically you buy the device and ring three after couple of days to give them notice(if you wanna cancel). But don't forget to mention that you want to keep it for the month running.

I was also able to get the MiFi dongle but for £5! I told the manager that I do not need the 1 month contract which is £15 for 5GB, so he said he will take off £15 of the dongle price to compensate.
Called Three and did the same... you can cancel your 1 month contract within your 14 day period and you will not get charged, and you can keep the device! Effectively got the device for £5! Will use it with my 12GB Three plan which I've ordered from MyMemory for £23.45 once it arrives!

In store you only pay for the device. The contract part of it is paid via Direct Debit directly to Three.

Just got mine from Currys today. I explained that I had already ordered a SIM (from the other thread 12GB/12 month) so didn't need the contract. They discounted the full price of the MIFI and told me to cancel the contract later.
So after speaking to three, the direct debit is now cancelled and I keep the Mifi for absolutely no charge at all. Amazing!!

Yes I have used the '3' feel at home data sim in Caletta quite a few times.
They work really well with general browsing but you can not stream TV or movies because they badly throttle your connection on streaming.
