Reminds me of when I bought a couple of breakfasts at a motorway service station.
I said to the cashier, 'Sorry, I've only got a £50 note'. She replied, 'That's not a problem, just put a few things back'.

No, you are paying because they have a near monopoly and can charge extra, because nobody else can open a rival burger chain at the same services and compete with them.

Yes - all done so that they could lower the prices and get a post on hukd!
Ok; conspiracy would suggest that's it's hidden. That the operators get charged a high rent for the facilities is pretty common knowledge I thought. While figures aren't mentioned, rent's certainly discussed on a .gov site.

My mouth was shut the whole time I typed that.
I was about to reply and ask for your reasoning but then I saw you added the word "fact" at the end and realised that it must be a fact and I must be wrong so decided not to. Thanks for clueing me into the facts.

yes. And they have to pay for the fact they have a monopoly.
The money which eventually ends up in government coffers I believe.

People complaining about service stations, if you don't like the price don't use them. They don't have a monopoly, you can drive off route if you want but as someone said that takes more time so you are paying for convenience if you choose to go there instead.
Alternatively, prepare your own food for the journey.
Service stations are private property with facilities that have to be paid for somehow and overheads that other locations don't have - staffing is one as they have to pay higher to cover staff extra travel costs. People seem to expect to be able to use them without having to pay for use one way or another.

Utter robbing b**ta**s. The roadsigns make me laugh.. . 'Tiredness can kill , take a break. '. Then they charge you 4 quid for a coffee and 3 quid for a sausage roll. They fuel is also ridiculously priced. Utter robbing b**ta**s.

Don't forget £100 parking charge notice if you "take a break" and have a few hours snooze in your car!!

Remember you're paying for the convenience - depends what your fuel and time is worth to drive off-route. I do try and avoid them if there's a better alternative, but often time/fuel more than makes up for it. Services have to pay a decent fee for the site I believe, then have to provide basics services 24/7, something which certainly isn't commercially viable without the mark-ups they charge I expect.

I've used the burger king app at a Moto service station. Used the code for a Whopper and Fries for £1.99.. only did this a month or so ago.. Just use the location button through the app, it will show you the closest burger king- motorway stop where you can use it. :-)

Yup. Surely this just takes their extortionate mark up down to high street prices! Still, a saving is a saving!
