Cant see a cheaper high velocity 140Watt 18" fan anywhere near this price.
The recently posted screwfix 18" fan is a lower wattage (110W) & costs £6+ more.
The regular CPC price of this fan is £29.78 - {part number HG00662}, but due to CPC's weird pricing structure, by simply adding the extra 2 digits {HG0066268} it brings the price down to this level.
Still need persuading - This same fan is over £47 on AMAZON >> https://www.amazon.co.uk/Pro-Elec-High-Velocity-FE-45/dp/B00EZM5MQQ

The controller seems to work ok, slowing the fan down to a stop with the adjustment knob fully anticlockwise, the there is admittedly a 'hum' which emanates from the fan motor when this is used at certain speeds.
http://thehydrocompany.co.uk/images/Variispeed%20Fan%20Controller.jpg
They work by electronically chopping the normally smooth sinusoidal input voltage waveform, removing a greater section of it for an evermore slower speed. However this chopped waveform results in the 'hum' you can now hear from the motor
https://qph.ec.quoracdn.net/main-qimg-974ed3370260c509f58290f10e225f9f-c?convert_to_webp=true
At certain speeds though, the hum is quiet enough to be 'drowned out' by the normal flan blade noise.

Plugged fan controller into wall socket, & then the fan into its output socket.
Switched fan onto low power output button - with the fan controller knob turned fully clockwise - full output power - the fan went to normal speed. Then by gradually turning the knob anticlockwise, the speed reduced to a gentle waft until finally stopping when fully anticlockwise.

Ordered mine Friday evening with standard postage. Received today! (Mon) very quick delivery.

It's a well built fan for the money that's for sure though I do agree to it being pretty noisy which is the speed of the fans rotating not the bearings. It is a High velocity fan however so to be expected and won't be moaning if we get another heat spell. (Day use)
Just need a quieter low wattage one now to keep me cool while I sleep.

*Shame there isn't a slightly lower setting as that would make the world of difference.

Looks like an AVS decline, we are amending the wording around this soon as its simply misleading. Basically, the address is not a perfect match vs. what your bank have on record so we get an auth code from the bank that indicates as much, most of the time its absolutely fine - basically, it should say "great, thanks for the order, if we have any issues we will contact you about it" instead of our slightly too draconian "computer says no / danger Will Robinson"...

Hope that helps

Mine turned up. Superb air flow, much better than your bog standard fan. Yes it's nosier, but acceptable in an office/living room in lower speed settings. And then when it gets really hot you'll happily accept the noise for being cool.

Mine came about 10 minutes ago. Didn't pay extra for next day. Came via UPS so super impressed with CPC. Appears very good quality. That's what I meant about their weird pricing structure & the way you can get cheaper prices by putting the 2 extra digits at the end - Its always been like that -very frustrating when ordering from their main site as you dont know if the same item is cheaper in the current monthly sale catalogue

Anyway, my fan has just been delivered (FREE) via UPS, approx 36 hours after ordering - and as you can imagine - Its Fantastic !!
Very Powerful, & only really very noisy if you put your head right into the breeze.
Put it at one end of the room and it circulates the air throughout
Very Impressed - Well done me for posting the deal :stuck_out_tongue:

All the more impressed that we've still got the heatwave today to make use of it (Shropshire)

Probably adds a small amount. Insignificant I suppose.

Better way to cool a house is to get some airflow going from downstairs to upstairs (if thats applicable). Open a downstairs window and place a fan near the window facing inwards and place one upstairs facing towards an open window.

In our old home we had a 'whole of house fan system' which is basically a large slow spinning fan downstairs (in wall) and a similar one in the loft, but blowing outwards. Cooler air is sucked around, keeping the temperature bearable. Works much better than a noisy fan like these.

19 Jul 16 1 #66
You are wrong. You have conflated average velocity with velocity. If something is moving, it can't have a velocity of zero (this is pretty basic). Try this http://www.algebralab.org/lessons/lesson.aspx?file=trigonometry_triganglinvelocity.xml

The spinning part of the fan has angular velocity and we can take any point on that spinning part and calculate its linear velocity. Similarly each point on the spinning part has a speed and the overall spinning part has a rotational speed, which you could measure in RPM.

So either "high speed" or "high velocity" are suitable descriptions of this fan.

It depends where you're going to use it. If angle A divided by angle G is greater than the subliminal partification of the sub sector 1/e2 within your house then yes, you need it, if not, I guess it depends on the coaxial of your spacial quadronics.

sunshine, I studied Physics and did pretty well at it too... and velocity is a VERY basic element of Physics. velocity takes into consideration displacement not distance. displacement takes into consideration direction. if an object travels A to B they could have a positive displacement. then when the object travels back from B to A then the object has a negatives displacement. displacement overall in the journey is thus zero. the velocity as a result is zero because it has taken the displacement into consideration. the speed on the other hand takes into consideration the distance. distance traveled can never be negative. so distance from A to B then from B to A will not be zero. I don't need to read such a basic level of physics thank you very much. you can if you want... that's your choice

Bought this fan a couple of years ago, was only talking about getting a second one last night and then this pops up. Fantastic fan with good air movement, however if you have a kitten and have this on the floor and the kitten tries running past it will take an unintended detour as ours discovered  He now entices the older cat to chase him then just stops short of the fan so the older one overshoots and ends up in the airflow
