Not true at all!
The Scorpio won't be released for at least 17/18 months or so, will cost a hell of a lot more, and this officially the cheapest 4k BR player in the UK.
Not to mention the improved 4k streaming apps, the improved visual fidelity by the bumped chipset, the smaller, more power efficient unit, the improved controller...
Oh, and don't forget, that when the Scorpio IS released, this unit will in fact, continue to work just fine.
Honest.
It won't burst into flames or anything!!

Looking at those prices, I'd recommend getting the 500GB model and then picking up an external 2TB Harddrive, it will be much cheaper, £90 extra for an additional 1.5TB of space, what is it with the tech companies, they seem to think it's OK charging stupid prices for extra storage. Phone vendors, console makers they all seem to do it.

After the Scorpio announcement it makes absolutely zero sense to buy this. Don't know why MS even bothered releasing it considering they themselves made it obsolete an hour after announcing it. Plus they haven't even reduced the RRP so aren't passing any savings onto customers. This is a poor investment IMO.

Not really, plenty of people don't have one and will appreciate a slimmer model with increased storage space and uhd bluray drive. I reckon I'll swap for one for the form factor and large internal drive rather than plugging in a an external. For me it's the uhd bluray though, think the Samsung player is around £400 so this is a no brainer imo

Cold, it was made obsolete less than an hour after it was announced. It will be outdated within 6 months, this is money down the drain, better off waiting for the scorpio, or getting the original version cheaper.

Technically all consoles upscale or your TV does, otherwise you'd have a small windowed display on your 4k screen. I've got numerous consoles connected to a 4k display. There nothing really new about this apart from a uhd bluray drive. The controller is now Bluetooth as well which is handy, the console is 40% slimmer and has larger internal storage options. If none of that matters, get the normal version.

I have a Toshiba 2TB Canvio drive plugged into my XBO, the thing is tiny, easily sits behind the console out of site and out of mind. Takes up a heck of allot less space than the power brick. I'd much rather have an external drive personally, mainly because in case of a drive failure, it's allot easier to replace a external drive than opening up the whole system to replace the internal drive. Maybe MS will go back to their 360 days and make it easy to replace the drive.

I wasn't planning on getting a slim, but the slimmer design and the UHD Blu ray drive does sound appealing and I am interested to see what that HDR gaming malarky it all about, though I would need a HDR compatible 4K TV to take advantage of it so probably will never get to use those features. I also want that new controller.

Though I should probably save the money for a 4K TV and the Scorpio for next year.
Antichrist84

Its all about choice, I have no need for an xbox or 4k capable xbox, but if i did want an xbox i would be going for this slim one, im not paying extra for scorpio and ts 4k capabilities when it is zero use to my interests.
I am sure plenty will be the same, not all of us care for 4k and def would not want to pay extra for it, plus the original xbox one is horrible ulgy and huge, so this slim one looks more appealing for me if i ever decided to get one.
Snakeyes646

exactly, horses for courses. I like my Xbox 360 for quick to get into games and use my pc gaming rig for my more graphically intensive multiplayer games. for me the appeal of the Scorpio is less so than for the one S as I already fork out a lot on the rig. With the addition of play anywhere for some of the AAA titles this will be perfect for me (one S and pc). Everyone will have a preference, Microsoft are just being smart in expanding their product line to capture more market share.

I had a small western digital external 2tb plugged into the side usb for about a year but it bricked recently on one of the updates. 500gb is definately too small, many game installs are 50gb+. Battlefield 4 / COD is nearer 60gb if i remember with the dlc. Too little 4k content to warrant buying this over a standard black bundle or the elite one with the ssd.

I COMPLETELY disagree with this.
If the battery goes in your ps4 controller, you have to loop a cable across the room, assuming you have one long enough.
Or constantly have it on charge. What happens if you suddenly run our of juice whilst playing? Again, connect a cable.

On my xbox? I swap out the batteries with some from my stash. I've always got AA's ready to go. They are used in everything.

Long live swappable batteries!!

And the rest! If this project Scorpio is going to run games at 4k surely it'll be aimed at hardcore gamers who will expect it to be capable of 4k at 60fps. If that's the case the console will need the equivalent of the upcoming GTX 1080i to do the job properly, even the new GTX 1080 can't quite manage the 60fps.
s1m0n1980

The card can handle 60fps @4k it just depends how much eye candy you want. Remember a console is not a PCs and developer only needs to develop for one set of variables unlike a PC so they can utilise the hardware more efficiently

Assuming we're still talking about the Xbox One not the Xbox One S now...

The Xbox One's internal port is only SATA II, and that's rated at a maximum data transfer speed of 150MB/s.
The USB3 connection the Xbox has a faster transfer speeds, upto 640MB/s. However to gain those speeds you're really going to need an SSD, since standard mechanical harddisks are limited to around 180MB/s transfers anyway (even with SATA III's transfer rates of ~600MB/s))

So a cheap USB 3 external harddisk can and usually will out perform the internal harddisk in the Xbox One by around 30MB/s at the very top end. A SSD drive will perform a lot faster, but are a lot more expensive as a result.

Now, If we're talking about the new Xbox One S, then if we go by the specs that have already been upgraded, it makes sense that they've also upgraded the SATA II to SATA III, meaning the internal hard disk will be the same speed as any external USB3 mechanical hard disk you'd be using.

If you own both consoles you'd know the answer to that, Sony went for compact design, at the expense of less than ideal cooling solution, (The freaking thing is loud,) where MS over engineered theirs to eliminate any possible RRoD issue, at the expense of a larger footprint, and it was originally designed with a set top box function in mind, i.e they intended for the console to be switched on 24/7.

I honestly don't know which of the two schools of thought I prefer, the PS4 does look better under the telly, but the near silent XBO is such a pleasent experience. I hope the more compact XBO is just as silent, which should be possible as the SoC inside the S very likely being made using the smaller 14nm Finfet process, so it won't be producing as much heat.

No. Just No. Both of my Xbox 1s, including PSUs are silent, except when installing a game, where you can hear the disk spinning. My PS4 on the other hand, that makes me have to turn up my stereo system.

Dont agree with your first sentence - the pc is always going to be a fundamentally different proposition to consoles. Although the gap does seem to be closing - in tems of performance and the selling strategies of ms and sony.

Your second point i do agree with. Microsoft (through greed and complacency) developed a horribly underpowered console and they are now massively overcompensating with the scorpio. As long as they keep the price in check i can only see this as a good thing for the customer. The trick is ensuring (just like the neo) that old console games are not completely gimped because devs are so focused on the scorpio.
mattturner756
15 Jun 16 2 #81
People do realise the scorpio will be £500-600+ yeah? It'll be marketed as the "elite" console. The graphics technology inside is equivelent to a £500-600 PC and microsoft won't manufacture them at a loss. Also, they'll only really be a benefit if you have a 4K tv which won't happen to a lot of us for a while.

This is a new console/controller/new tech, for the price, it's really good and I f****** hate xbox but I'm going to preorder one and finally jump on.

http://www.mcvuk.com/news/read/spencer-scorpio-won-t-do-anything-for-you-if-you-don-t-have-a-4k-tv/0168577

Phil spencer stating the scorpio isn't worth it unless you have a 4K TV. So my thinking is wait till 4K is reasonable then jump onto a scorpio when it's cheaper. If you already have a good library of games, then I assume they'll all run better on scorpio and they'll play almost like new games

Don't forget that console games are better optimized than PC games. With that in mind I don't think a GPU that powerful will be needed.

They mentioned the GPU would be 6 TFLOPS, that's around the performance of a 390X, which performs somewhere in between a GTX 970 and 980 currently.

A few cards can handle 4k at 60fps, one of my 980TIs will but you've got to lower all sorts of settings which then makes it pointless. As for the one set of variables, that won't be the case though because they'll be developing for the standard xbox one, project Scorpio and windows 10. However you want to look at it though, project Scorpio isn't gonna be cheap at all.
mattturner756

Thing to point out is at 4K anti-aliasing isn't needed, which generally has massive impact on performance in games. Without having to have that frees up a lot of resources for other things. I sold my xbox one a week before E3 and put the money towards a gaming PC. Being a day one purchase It was good but got underused when my PS4 arrived. I literally had to wipe dust off before boxing and getting £200 back was a fair price. If I didnt have a ps4 or the money for a decent rig then this S would be appealing. I like the new look and feature set. Now, It seems microsoft will be releasing their newer games on PC too so I feel vindicated in my decision switching. Scorpio is an interesting proposition - given that I paid £479 with fifa 14 for day one release of the XB1, I would imagine a similar entry price if the specs become reality. With this in mind, there will be a place for this new slim as the price will no doubt be at least half and not everyone will have ability to/ or want to shell out so much money as well as having a 4K tv in place to utilize the new resolution.

Xbox announced this and said a few words then went straight onto the Scorpio. This is just a money maker, 4K? There is hardly anything in 4K at the moment, why waste money on this when next summer they'll be another one out which let's face it, everyone will buy even those who buy this so why not just save the money until then.
Danjw91
15 Jun 16 #96
Why buy this though for 4K if you don't have a 4K TV? Surely buying this because it's got 4K player is totally against what you just said since you said the Scorpio will be a waste if you don't have a 4K TV? The Scorpio will play 1080p at 60fps and run games a lot better than this. I have a 4k TV and there isn't much content for it yet. Getting the One S for the 4K is pretty stupid considering you just said no point getting the Scorpio if you ain't got a 4k TV but the One S won't be able to run 1080p. Waste of money in my opinion and I'll be waiting for the Scorpio.

stato257
15 Jun 16 #99
Based on what MS have told us so far about scorpio it would put the GPU power just slightly better than the soon to be released AMD RX 480 (5.5 Tflops) which hits the market at the end of this month with prices starting at £199. No doubt in 18 months time this value will be far lower and although I can foresee a custom GPU / APU being the powerhouse of the new system, the cost to produce something equivalent to the quoted 6Tflops will substantially lower than todays power/price ratios. With 4K Tv's being more accesible for people now I think the demand will be far greater in 18 months so interesting times ahead!
bilbob
15 Jun 16 #100
They just didn't did they?
Scorpio was right at the end of the presentation, as you well know.
4k is growing, don't forget, this'll play 4k discs right out of the block, as well as stream 4k from Amazon and Netflix.
People want devices that'll play this media, so why not offer one?
And Scorpio, as REPEATEDLY stated, won't launch next summer!

But fact's aint' gonna stop you are they?

I've got a 4k tv, and I want to play 4k media. I've got a 4k BT box, but I want discs to play too.
And stream the media. This box will do it all.

And it will also be the cheapest 4k BR player available at the time.

What's not to like?

And yes, I'll buy Scorpio next Christmas too.
Because it's 18 months away.

From my understanding, the XB1S may work fine, but it won't be compatible with the VR headset. Plus Microsoft has stated that they are not going to stop developers making "Scorpio Only" games.

So if that's a big deal to anybody who wants a futureproof console...it makes much more sense to hold onto your money until the Scorpio is out.

If you can't hold off, it makes more sense to buy a "Phat" XB1 which are usually readily available on here for £200 with 2 games, unless you desperately need a 4K Blu-Ray player that is.

This article explains it all...

I think you either got some dodgy PSU's or there is some other issue at hand, I have my PS4 and XBO next to each other, and my XBO is silent, (except when booting up and installing games) the PS4 noise has been an issue since day one, though the newer models are not as loud from what I've read.

Maybe you have the Power brick in the wrong position? I think I remember reading about the position of the PSU causing problems for some people.

Very true, I like the idea of easily replaceable PSU, but I can understand the benifits of it being built in, my nephew is in Uni and travels between his mothers and Uni with the XBO, and he complains about the PSU and the console size constantly, I told him two years ago, that MS will release a smaller console once AMD move to 14nm and so for him the S will be day one purchase.

The ps4 has never been that loud for me only some games will make it slightly louder and the fan over working only some titles tho the more demanding ones
adam0812
15 Jun 16 #107
I think it will cost £499. I very much doubt it will run games that are 30fps currently at 4k/60. Gtx 1070 is capable of running almost everything at 4k/30, so take the AMD equivalent, add bulk buying and 12 months to the mix and there you go, an (relatviely) affordable 4k experience. No one in their right mind would spend £600+ on a console, you would just buy a pc instead, especially with the w10 initiative.

Based on these quotes from Phil Spencer (and he should know!) your understanding is flawed -

When you're buying a console game from us, you know that console game will run on your original Xbox. No-one gets left behind. We said that on stage. Your Xbox One S and Scorpio. That's an important design point for us. They're all part of the same family. And we want to make sure just like when you're buying your music today, you don't worry about upgrading to a new phone that somehow won't play your old songs or your new songs. We think about your Xbox One collection of games that will move with you between those different consoles.

In fact, somebody today will have an Xbox One, and when Scorpio comes out they will buy Scorpio and they will put Xbox One in a different room, and we're obviously going to make sure that as they move between rooms that they've got access to the same games.

The Scorpio games are obviously designed to take advantage of six teraflops and 4K. Your Xbox One, you were playing those today. You know what those look like and feel like. But there won't be Scorpio exclusive console games. Absolutely not.
adam0812
15 Jun 16 #109
They said the exact opposite, that there would be no scorpio exclusive games.........
thekitkatshuffler
15 Jun 16 #110
So, I've gone ahead and pre-ordered one of these. I figure that after selling my current Xbox One, I'm getting myself a sleeker version of the same console, with HDR gaming added into the mix, plus a 4K bluray player, for a net outlay of about £130.

That seems like a complete no-brainer to me.

All I need now is someone to recommend me an HDR enabled TV in the ballpark of 55" and no more expensive than say £800.

Go!!!!
Harryisme
15 Jun 16 #111
MS have said there will be no Scorpio exclusive, in their Eurogmer interview, though I suspect VR games will technically be Scorpio exclusive, but lets face it, VR only games will not be that enjoyable without the headset anyway. If you are going to buy a XBO and can wait, then yeah wait 18 months for the scorpio, but if you are planning to get a XBO now, it's better to get the S model, the 4K Blu Ray and slim design make it a worthwhile update, aswell as a controller with built-in bluetooth. Plus should consume less power.

It's not my opinion...I got my information from Engadget, who are usually a reputable source. Just trying to help people on here make an informed decision. Here is the article:

https://www.engadget.com/2016/06/14/xbox-one-s-vs-project-scorpio/
thekitkatshuffler
15 Jun 16 #113
I appreciate that you're trying to be helpful but the fact is that you're helping people to make misinformed decisions.

The Engadget article says that there will be VR games exclusively on Scorpio but that's because Xbox One S doesn't support VR. For all other games, they will be available on both pieces of hardware. It's that simple.
alizi1
15 Jun 16 #114
I think you should read the article more thoroughly...it does state that they won't stop developers making Scorpio Only games, not including VR games. Read it, I'm not making it up!

"Shannon Loftis, Xbox's head of publishing, the status of the gaming promise seems even shakier. On a YouTube livestream Loftis said that "it's up to the game development community" to decide whether or not there will be Scorpio-only games."
thekitkatshuffler
15 Jun 16 #115
I don't need to read it any more thoroughly. Engadget speculation doesn't trump actual verified information, directly from Phil Spencer's mouth - http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2016-06-15-xbox-boss-phil-spencer-the-big-interview

If you want to keep taking that article as gospel, that's fine. Just don't expect people to make a purchasing decision based on it.

Scorpio fanboys v One S fanboys
alizi1

It may be speculation as you say...but that speculation is left for game developers to decide. Which gives a lot of uncertainty as to whether to commit to an XB1S now or wait until the Scorpio.

15 Jun 16 #118
Tempted to sell my Day 1 and get this, would only be about £100 so not a bad deal for a more modern XB until more details about Scorpio arrive.
thekitkatshuffler
15 Jun 16 #119
You genuinely seem to be hard of understanding, mate. It's not for developers to decide. The head of Xbox has said they can't make non-VR games exclusive to Scorpio. End of story.
Danjw91
15 Jun 16 #120
On the conference I watched they did. Maybe on another they went into more detail. They even stated that the Xbox One S is for people who still have the Xbox 360 and not the current Xbox One as it's a cheaper way of getting people to move on to a better console and if people who have the xbox one want it then Microsoft will be happy to take your money. Also on Currys there are 4K DVD players for £150 or even £100?

There also is not a lot of 4K content even available yet. Not anything good anyway. All the good content is on Amazon 4K which I watch but DVDS I don't see much available. So personally I'd rather save £250 and put that towards the Scorpio which most probably will be like £800 if they want them specs.
alizi1
15 Jun 16 #121
Why would another Xbox executive say the opposite then? Seems very uncertain to me...
thekitkatshuffler
15 Jun 16 3 #122
What utter nonsense. For a start there's no such thing as 4K DVD. What you're talking about are players that upscale standard DVDs and blurays to 4K.

The cheapest 4K Bluray player on the market in the UK is around £430
s1m0n1980
15 Jun 16 #123
Lol 4K blu rays are out now I have several.

Those 4K players for 100 to 150 from curry sauce are not true 4K players they are up scaling players. Curry sauce on,y do two true 4K players one its 429 the other 599.

Thanks for calling me a troll.

It's clear that you are just in denial and out right refusing to read the article I posted...yes you are correct the head of Xbox did state that there wouldn't be any Scorpio exclusive games other than VR...but then another Xbox executive says the total opposite and that it's up to game developers to decide. Who are you to believe? Like I keep repeating, it's uncertain...but you just wish to ignore that fact.

msmyth
15 Jun 16 1 #128
My guess would be the messaging is intentionally mixed, because they are stuck between a rock and a hard place. They can't outright say Project Scorpio will play new games better, because they want to sell the slim and get people into their ecosystem before next year. From a PR standpoint, it's difficult to control when you have 3 days of journalists rephrasing questions to invite a curious response.

Can anyone recommend a cheap 40" HDR TV from a good brand?

The Samsung website says that all Samsung UHD TVs ever made are HDR so I was going to get last year's UE40JU6000. After researching apparently most of their 2015 TVs don't have HDR at all and their website is just grossly misleading.

* Spider-Man
* Gran Turismo Sport
* Dead Stranding
* Days Gone (reminded me a lot of State of Decay)
* Resident Evil 7 (hope it doesn't suck like 5 and 6)
* Last Guardian

Those are the games from Sony's E3 that made me interested but yeah, that's it. I couldn't careless about PSVR or any other gimmick. Microsoft for me had more variety in games and they finally revealed a Slim Xbox One which took them ages but also an awesome powerful machine which'll be out only by Christmas 2017.

For me: Microsoft > Sony > Nintendo (when they said it was gonna be just about Zelda they weren't kidding)

You don't have to buy them over and over - you don't have to remove and replace battery cover, removing and replacing batteries in between - internal is surely more convenient even if swapping batteries only takes a few moments not having any in the house may leave people wishing batteries were internal/ rechargeable. Personally, I bought the rechargeable Microsoft battery and lead pack, making my Xbox One controllers as convenient as my PS4.
GAVINLEWISHUKD
16 Jun 16 #153
It's ok as they are all AMD fanboys.
bilbob
16 Jun 16 1 #154
First off, I don't know ANYONE that runs their controllers from disposable batteries. If you do, you need a thump, frankly.
Once you've bought some rechargeables, (cost very very little...) you can use them in most things... They last longer than the internal in the PS4, if they run flat, you can also plug in a USB cable and carry on.
With the exception of the extra whole ONE POUND to buy them in the first place, if you want to , you can treat them like an internal, but with the extra flexibility to replace them at will if they run out, or go faulty.

Again, I really cannot see (apart from a tiny bit of initial convenience) what built in has over replaceable...
JumpMan1980
16 Jun 16 #155
"Apart from a tiny bit of initial (in)convenience" You acknowledge internal are more convenient then?
bilbob
16 Jun 16 1 #156
That's an extraordinarily selective reading of that whole piece isn't it?
JumpMan1980
16 Jun 16 #157
By confirming there is more convenience, even if tiny, you argued against your own point of internal batteries being no more convenient than replaceable. I am going to sell my white xbox and elite controller now and get an S on release simply because I want the newer, smaller product.. for the aesthetics of the thing and to have the latest, affordable one. No scorpio for me if i read correctly its close to a grand!?. To my mind, Xbox One is an ugly console next to Playstation 4... Microsoft seem now to acknowledge Sony for where they are superior.. removed power block, new design resembling Ps4 and as for adding an external to the limited 500GB HDD, I replaced Ps4's with 2TB and may have done same with Xbox if I wasn't now going to sell and get a 1TB model..
Kaz00ie
16 Jun 16 #158
I think both consoles have great exclusives.

This Winter I will buy The Last Guardian, GT Sport and Gravity Rush 2 for my PS4.

I'm buying a 1TB One S to play Gears 4, Sea of Thieves, Forza Horizon 3 and the backlog which includes Rare Replay, Halo 5 and the MCC.

Some of the games Sony announced won't be coming out untill late 2017/2018. Microsoft could have just thrown together a CGI trailer for Banjo Threeie, Battletoads and loads more but what's the point when they are years away?

Also this is the best media centre on the market and it is a bargain price. As much as I love my PS4 I still currently use my PS3 as a media centre because the PS4 was a step back.

Also I've read the whole thread but no one has asked: do Gamestop UK send PAL versions of consoles? Like it won't have an EU plug? Also do they take cash on order or delivery?
bilbob
16 Jun 16 #159
Oh please!
I accepted there was a tiny initial benefit of not having to open a flap and install the batteries.
And that's it.

Apart from that, (IMO) everything else is superior with replaceable batteries.
And I wasn't arguing against my own point, as a: I accepted that in the first place, and b: taken as a whole, my point was completely valid. Replaceable batteries are overall more convenient.

You may chose to make a pedantic point by selectively highlighting a few words form the many, but the overall point is valid no matter how you chose to read it.
JumpMan1980
16 Jun 16 #160
Okay, I will indulge again. Installing rechargeables makes the Xbox just as convenient as the Playstation. Assuming they are ones you can recharge whilst inside the unit by plugging a cable into the controller. Which is what I have and not what I was stating to be any less convenient. If you use rechargeables but have to remove them to charge separately, then you either have to wait for charge or have a 2nd charged pair ready to go, yes? I consider that inconvenient compared with plugging a charge cable in. As far as I remember you questioned why replaceables were less convenient than internal and I offered reasons why. You then said yes there is some (tiny) inconvenience to replaceables and I say well there you go then. Yet you continue to argue? If you had originally said there is some tiny inconvenience to replaceables vs internals I would not have bothered commenting. BUT you said in capitals how are internals MORE convenient than replaceables? I'll drop it if you won't.

16 Jun 16 #164
Your right about the AA and the optimization but the games will be being developed for the standard console, project Scorpio, and in some cases, the PC as well so the whole "1 variable argument then goes out the window"
Someone has mentioned the GPU may be similar to a GTX 980 but if that's the case, it's simply not powerful enough. As I said above, you need 980TIs in SLI to run GTA 5 in 4k at 60fps, and that's without AA so even with some very well optimised games, they need a GTX 1080 equivalent at least or we're gonna be stuck with an extremely expensive console and games that look no prettier than the standard xbox one, just in 4k.

There's a lot of discussion here so this is probably a good place to ask.

I've been considering buying an Xbox One for a while for the games I want to play, but I'm not really interested in this whole 4K bluray thing the Xbox One S does.

Is there any reason for me to get an Xbox One S instead of a standard Xbox One (which will drop in price I'm sure after the S is released)?

Also 1gb or 500gb and an external drive, which would be the best option?

Hi mate. If your not interested in the 4K & upgraded aspect of s then I'd say look for a great deal on previous model. There will be tons around in July early August I can imagine, I'm upgrading from my Day 1 edition purely for the smaller form factor and 4K bits and once I've sold my old XB1 it won't cost a huge amount. As far as external, see what the price diff is over time, some great 1TB externals a it at good prices, personally I'd go for 500G & 1 TB external as gives you just that bit more space plus they will load slightly faster off a USB 3.0 drive than the internal, (depending on drive speed but it's noticeable) just enjoy at end of day, some great games about!
