Received mine on Tuesday 5th July and looked brand new.
Connected up via usb and whilst copying files to it, it disconnected.
Ran lifeguard tools and that reported 'too many bad sectors' after about 15 minutes of testing.
In the process of returning.
Reckon they just pop them back into a factory new case, can't believe they'd miss major errors like that when 're-certifying' them.

What software can I use to check if this recertified drive is new or not when I get it?
I'm sure I read you can use something to check the age since it was first used, and what about to check for bad sectors?
Thanks

I'm still undecided about this. Is it wise to buy a recertified one as your main backup?
I need a main drive for photos. I'm guessing this isn't a good choice?...

I'm running this through flubit via Amazon to see what a new one comes out at. £35 and I'll do it.

£44.43 on Amazon by the looks of it. Think you'd be lucky to get under £40 on Flubit.

What is the difference between this and a WD MyPassport Ultra?

I think the element versions are just hard drives, whilst the passports include extra features like encryption and backup software.

I used to work for a system builder and we quite often sent drives back to WD, occasionally the re-certified replacements were DOA, or failed in some way fairly soon. If they've been returned to WD, there's a reasonable chance that there is/was a proper fault with them, which may or may not get picked up during the rectification process. Although a high proportion of the drives are likely fine, I personally wouldn't trust them with anything important.

I don't really trust brand new drives, let alone recertified drives.

I changed the internal drive on my ps4, don't think it takes an external? I've ordered this for my XB1.

Try full data recovery on it before you use it - just for a laugh. I've friends who needed to do data recovery on an external drive after using it for some time, only to discover other people's files were still on it!
Message to the unaware - never trade in a laptop or computer without first wiping the drive securely.

have two one 1 tb and one 1.5 tb both working well though arrived as new but in brown boxes, and found that the 1 tb s do not hang around long on the site hence getting a 1.5 tb after waiting 2 weeks for them to come back in stock, if you want 2 buy one you will then get an email for 20% off next purchase ok as post free.

There used to be limits on the Xbox 360, but they removed those a while ago, shortly after the Xbox One came out. I am using a 1TB external drive on my Xbox 360 and have a lot of games on it. I am fairly certain the Xbox One has no limit either.

I've just RMA'd a MyCloud 3 TB brought on a previous deal. Tried all the troubleshooting with a WD representative, but no joy. Maybe I was just unlucky, but I don't think I'd buy another recertified drive.

Got a recertified 1TB for my Xbox one and it works flawlessly... Just connect it to your Xbox as an external drive and hit the settings to add up...

My (once) primary hard drive is a refurbished hard drive and while I don't really personally trust refurbs to last an incredibly long time this hard drive proves me wrong, somehow.
From what I know of Xbox's you can have it as an external hard drive but you can't put it internally due to a restriction (I'm not really sure why that restriction is there but whatever.)

I've had 2 recertified WD drives, both in original packaging, both appeared brand new, both still working fine.
I think 1tb has been cheaper than this before though.

That was my impression of the 2 I got. The casing on the MyBook could scratch easily so I would have noticed if it had been used

I've bought 2 so far (a 1Tb portable and 3Tb MyBook for an Xbox). All seemed new and working away. I bet these are just listed as "recertified" so that other resellers don't complain that WD are undercutting them. Buy with confidence. About to buy a 4TB MyCloud.(though they can take a couple of weeks to arrive).

Using software such as:

Others are available, but I've used this recently and it was easy to use, fast and thorough.
