For those asking about a 650c wheel upgrade:

I've had my 650 Triban 3 for just over a year now, and have just recently replaced the wheels with some Team Vision 30 650 wheels. Less than £100 for the set on eBay, brand new. Lovely, lovely wheels. Now my bike looks like this:

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/V6hhGLvnMpJOz9vWrhH9ACWkvUot8Ph5qGO7RlOG1SConU5y62YcQAyRYXzF-jxUGlBaN4Mb9WiPHpVw82DwLCZSOB0tUIV17R7WUNTti51WXEXn0ZUYJfWZw3wpRu8exJkkUQEKYCRe5mZTs2lyhDzAb-hQXwX_j3i8dB2XmuKD2u_i7VWpRsAB7FId0_PFDGjZDkcYFFS-zuXUiMx5k7YhGGj1p3nQvV4XU-Ss7EkyO9dFM9GgYse5kpIaoq8mV8Eau5fYodBveEKyeBdfBmHVi8wIXib4iJ5rxdDJguw1f9vUtRgMd5PGynZ6_YONxbjr80McwnOmzCa24dhgE3n_DjCmEXkGZFne5y-wwflbcnyI9E1HJwWDE2d2wj6P8l-r4aJScDdxcnJXgfFuMiHGtsgfQiB9-NRwttK3xGNkGgb7LeRa7PgQ7xo-K9n0RusvdKwg6k6h3w76RebQ3yVS67hXtJr2SQiBduzUoIY-vMkLrtk8zEGpr18MYJeuH4QpNcYKWfWHHXhvoOyMQZ7DvtG_0fZN4pbaU1KwiiUVSHJr7z7s-WNetJA6-jIjLfUKKX5v4lWA7FDOeWDt0mYT9hs2dvIZ=w1920-h1080-no

I ride over 200km a week on it, commuting and club rides. It's a dream.

I bought Conti GP4000s from Chain Reaction (less than £50 for the pair).

Other upgrates have been new tape (Lizardskins), Charge Spoon saddle, SPD pedals, and I've had to replace the cassette and chain because I have ridden it so much. Apart from wearing bits out, though, upgrades are non-essential for a first time road bike rider. I rode the original stock wheels and tyres for 4000km with only two punctures!

Even though the rest of the sizes aren't in stock - but I don't even see 54 in the drop down list - is that just a glitch or I am missing something? Good to zone in on a size for when they become available next - I am 5'9" and the guide suggests 54 is probably what I should be looking at.

I don't think there is anything similar to this for this price hence the 1200+ degree heat. You are probably looking at the 500SE at £300

Seems only the smaller sizes left in stock for the moment -:disappointed: wonder how does the carrera parva which people are talking about on the other thread for roughy the same price right now stacks up? Looking for a commute bike(10-15 mile a day on city roads), easy maintenance in the sub 200 region - any suggestions? many thanks.

Ordered the 48cm. Thanks for your note as that as well as a few other comments around suggest it will last a while too even if she continues to grow. Can't go wrong really for that price. 2nd hand ones on Ebay going for more than this price!

My missus is 5ft3, I bought her a 51cm but it's being swapped on Saturday for a 48cm as she finds it too big.

I'd recommend 48cm as it gives you far more options to customise the size.

My daughter (just 12) is at the top end of the 48cm size guide at 5'4" tall and inside leg 28" (71cm). Even though a 51cm would probably be ideal, at £150 tempted to go for it, and she does have 2 younger brothers who'd inherit it. Anyone similar size or experience with the 48cm give any advice? I've always been slightly more happy on a slightly smaller frame than my size personally.

When I rang they told me they only had the 48 cm left so I tried it. It is tiny and the 51cm isn't much bigger due to the smaller wheels. I'm picking up a 54cm second hand as the bikes are amazing quality. Still waiting to sell or return by 51cm

Dam it I wanted one of these but being 5' 8" I think the 48cm might be a bit small.

4 Jul 16 #201
I ordered and received my bike after that incident. I think that they have limited stock that fluctuates as people place, cancel and return orders. The 48 cm size is still showing as in stock. I suggest to force-reload the page (hold shift whilst clicking reload) as cached data can cause the stock shown to be out of date.
UPDATE: Now showing as out of stock. It's worth checking back over the next few days though, force-reloading the page each time.

Thank you creating the deal honeymonster86; I'm very happy with my bike.

Difficult to know if the wheel comments relate to early ones, they may well be fine now. Always a trade off between weight and durability.

Yep, pretty much. I broke a spoke back in March, but had it fixed and trued immediately and then went touring on them with panniers, still rolled fine afterwards.

Wheels look really nice.

One of the best upgrades I ever did to my road bike was swapping the FSA Tempo chainset with square armed bottom bracket, for a Shimano 5800 and Ultegra bottom bracket. Instantly not only looked better but saved 800g! You can pick barely used chainsets up for £20-40 (have picked up a RS500 one for £20 from gumtree) + bottom bracket for £11.
winchman
27 Jun 16 1 #193
All good then, nothing broke. Just wondered as some reports of wonky wheels and dry hubs. Perhaps for those that have just received theirs, its worth checking the spoke tension feels even and the hubs roll as they should.
plasticniki
27 Jun 16 #192
Yeah, two mainly:

1) Not sure if the stock wheels can take a 10 speed cassette (I think they can, but my new ones definitely can) and I am thinking of upgrading the groupset (10 speed Tiagra maybe) in the next 6 months or so.

2) I'd ridden the stock wheels for 4000km and they're nothing special. I asked lots of cycling friends what the best first upgrade should be, and pretty much everyone was in agreement that wheels are best. I've been flying up hills far more than before, so they were pretty much right. I have noticed the bikes rolls faster and it feels much nicer to ride as well. Also, I desperately needed new tyres, and thought it'd be a shame to whack some lovely GP4000s on crappy wheels.

As I said though, it's not necessary at all unless you start getting into road cycling.

Finished building mine (well the missus') last night, in the extreme gears where there is a large crossover (for instance largest front and rear the cogs) the chain will drop to the middle front chainring, but other than that it's well behaved. Will see how she gets on but swapping to a double front is looking appealing to avoid that...

Looking real nice though with rubino pro tyres, cosine saddle and a lifeline bottle holder:
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r129/nathb89/Bike/btwin/27C1A3AD-4129-48AF-952B-78E1F1DAAA45.jpg

**saddle set up for me to test it**

On a side note jimfu if your chain jumped off at the front you need to set the mech limits to stop that happening in the future. YouTube is your friend.

I'm 5'6" with short legs and the 51 is a perfect fit on the minminim positions for me. I've had the same experience as everyone else, the gears need some tweaking, first time I changed up on the front the chain jumped off! Really impressed that it came almost ready to ride.

I'm no cycling pro, this will be my first road bike but the frame just looks tiny and with me on it, it feels like I'm riding a child's bike. If there was no 51cm for me to collect I would keep the 48cm and make it fit as I don't ride too far. I'm around 5ft 7 mate. The stand over height was quite large (from the frame to my groin). I felt like I was leaning a lot to reach the handlebars (as my seat has to be quite high to fit me) hope that helps you mate b

If you ride in the wet, stock wheels will not last long. It's a known issue, poor seals, bearings will rust and free hub will fail. Google it, it's on many forums and even on reviews on decathlon site. I had mine replaced under warranty, but after that expired and many bearing changes the free hub failed again. Now have a nice set of rs010's, much better. Wish I'd have upgraded sooner, would have saved hassle of all the times I replaced the bearings.

I bought 2 today in Glasgow. couldn't believe my look! Great service too, I wanted a 60 sold out of course, but just as well as the 57 is a great fit (I think) (I'm 6'1'') apparently the 60 is 3cm longer. I got the last 51 for my son who is about 5'7''.

A great bike to a road bike novice, just spent an hour, really like it. Jumped from 3 to 1 a couple of times but probably more down to me. Shimano on my 57 and microshift as above on the 51.

couple of points:

there was a 57 left in the store at about 4pm and another (possibly 57 but definitely not 60 or 51)
the guy in store said you can bring the bike to a store for a free check over after 3 months
365 day no quibble (hmm) guarantee 365 day!!!

happy

Received mine yesterday and, unfortunately, the rear mech/hanger was bent.

I called Decathlon and, as the bike is out of stock, they offered the "upgraded" 500se as a replacement (price matched).

I'll take delivery of the 500se on Friday hopefully. From what I can see they're very similar bikes (the 3 and 500se), with the 500 having microshift mechs.

Just put mine together earlier and noticed the Microshift levers. Mine also came with red hoods instead of black like on the website. They seem OK but the front derailleur has the same issue as yours. Also when shifting down it jumps straight down to the smallest ring, even when it's supposed to be on the largest. Definitely some tweaking needed.

My pedals seem OK but I haven't had a proper ride yet. Will probably replace with clipless at some point anyway.

As for the size, I'm happy to say that it's fine, much better than I first imagined. I did flip the stem to raise the handlebars, and lowered the seat to something a little less extreme - this is my first road bike, so even now it feels a bit weird! Looking forward to taking it out for a proper blast soon

Just picked mine up from my kind neighbours and built it up.

The one I got is 51cm, a few things of interest (to me anyway haha):

- Microshift shifters (was expecting Claris - so that's a bonus!)
- 650c wheels are not as small as I was expecting in my head.
- the supplied pedals are very gritty (replacement may be required).
- weighs 9.7kg with everything fitted.

I just need to tweak the gears (front mech not shifting onto largest chainring). Then it's ready to go.

Overall very impressed with the quality and attention to detail, especially for £150!!!

New tyres should arrive tomorrow, but It's not only about he weight though...
winchman
21 Jun 16 #173
Spending £50-75 on a wheel upgrade I think is arguably of limited benefit, if at all, save the weight of a couple of Mars bars and might well be weaker to save weight. Cheaper to buy better tyres/inner tubes.

nathb
21 Jun 16 #171
This is my point, you can pick up some okay £50-75 wheelsets for 700c.. but nothing for 650c.

The 51cm bike I ordered for the missus is being delivered today. After reading reviews I also decided to get some different tyres, from the limited choices available in 650c.

I should have done a little homework on 650c - I fear it's going to be a PITA for wheelset upgrades since there appears to be only two options in stock at the moment...

But then again, it's a £150 bike - so if she really enjoys it and outgrows nothing has been lost.

Picked up mine from Sheffield Decathlon store. O MY! What a bike! and What a service!

It rides sooooo smoothly. the gear is at a bit funny position, comparing to my old Giant hybrid bike.
The wheel is only 23mm! very slim!

The service is epic! the guy told me he has assembled 4 already today, with 2 more to collect.
I preferred the lower seat, and he sawed the seat bar for my liking!

the bike comes with free light as well, not as good as cateye ones, but really can't complain for 150.00!

it's not so much looking a berk that's the issue, you'll find it a painful ride on long distances.. way too cramped I'd think.
Morpheus_00
17 Jun 16 #117
absolutely suitable for canal path. modern road bikes are tough and though this isn't high end per se, you're hardly taking it on Paris Roubaix.

17 Jun 16 #116
Well I bought a 51cm Triban 5 last year with 650cc wheels. I'm 5'7" with 30" leg. I found the 54cm too long in the top tube whereas this fits comfortably. It is always easier to make a small bike fit (within limits) than too shrink a bike which is too large.

Whether you want to ride a 650cc bike though is a better of personal preference and is generally whether you think you will be seen as riding your kids bike. Because in the cycling world there are lots of top class professional cyclists who rode or ride 650cc bikes such as Emma Pooley and Laurent Jalabert, a real pro whose life was so unfortunately cut short.

I have ordered the 51 even though Im about 5.7 (and a half....) I have a Boardman 53 and had to swap for a shorter stem, plus have the saddle quite far forward. I'm hoping this is the lesser of two evils...might need a longer stem

great timing for my question: i need to get new pedals for my triban 500se as ive ragged mine, any suggestions? i would prefer not to go for clips as i play football some evenings and can ride in my astros - are there any clip one side/normal other side pedals? Thanks all.

5ft6, 30cm inseam. Would the 51cm frame be too small, any with experience of this bike know?

I've read that this bike in particular seems quite small compared to others.
I currently have a 54cm Claud butler that's slightly too big but worried the 51cm triban may be small. Bah!

can I swap to 650c25, maybe?
GAVINLEWISHUKD
17 Jun 16 #60
Swap the tyres out for something a bit more hybrid like Schwalbe Land Cruiser Road Tyre. Will good on road but also good if you travel on towpaths.
George287
17 Jun 16 #59
I'm 6'2" and really after a hybrid rather than a full on road bike, but this seems such a good deal that if I can catch a 60cm frame in stock (assuming this is the best suited frame size for my height), I'll be sorely tempted to go for it. The majority of my riding seems to be on roads, so I think this'd be a decent enough option.

I don't have any experience of the Triban road bike range, so the following can't be taken too rigourously. However, I'm 6'1" on a different brand road bike, and find the 57.5" size of this to be perfect. You may well find that raising the saddle is the least of your worries, with reach to the handlebars being a bit of stretch. Shorter or longer stems are available to change this, but I'd try to get the right size for you in the first place and then make any minor adjustments as needed.
Ben GT
17 Jun 16 #43
Might have to cancel my order for the 60cm and hope a 57cm comes up.
JEC1987
17 Jun 16 #42
I bought a 54cm and I'm 5'10 and it's a perfect fit. Just bought my missus one in a 51 (she's around 5'4) so will be a good fit for her. I cannot recommend this bike enough, and for £150 it's an absolute bargain! I would say that the first (only) upgrade needed would be the wheels as they are a little heavy, but otherwise I can't fault the bike. Very light and robust bike and have been using mine on long distance rides for over 2 years, with only tweaks made to the gears and brakes. Unless you are racing in comps, get this bike and save yourself some money!
