Not a bad price for a 5" Sat Nav with european maps for life. Ex display model if that bothers anyone.
Doesn't come with speed cameras but at £40 it's not the end of the world and can be had quite cheap from TomTom direct on occasion.
Normally use my phone but sat nav hammers battery and handy for mum and dad to use as well, I'm thoughtful like that.
Collection only so store specific.

The deal was on when I checked on Sunday night. The closest one was Blackburn for myself and there was apparently one display model left for £50.00. I reserved it for collection, only to realise that there was a glitch in the system and 6 orders were placed for this one display model. They ended up giving me a TomTom Go 51 instead, brand new and sealed for the same price!! So I was quite happy, top customer service.

On holiday on Isle of Wight and grabbed a £70 Go 50. Nothing in stores near me at home. Great condition, boxed with leads and holder. All updated with euro maps and latest SW.
Thanks OP

Lol... even Halfrauds appear to have removed this item from their website now.
Glad I voted it HOT, HOT, HOT!
Let me guess... always worth checking your local store in case they have one that isn't even on the webisite. Someone might have just returned one.

The box claims UK and Ireland Maps only. The man in the shop said the same. I've just updated mines and it's updated as Europe. So it's more than just the Uk and Ireland. Bonus

Well even at £50 I went on a head and picked one up. It's my first satnav. I had been thinking about getting one this past while and I honestly didn't want to spend too much on it. I've been using my phone which is pretty good. The tom tom looks brand spanking new. Thanks to the op

Good price... I reserved one straight after seeing this post, and have to say after getting it home and toying around with it for about three hours, the device hadn't managed to connect to the software and the GPS hadn't found a single location. The screen was drab and very unresponsive - I had to press quite hard and very accurately to get the characters I wanted, meaning you spend half the time correcting what you're typing ... I returned it immediately! I guess I had a duff example regarding the GPS and software, but the screen issues were offputting enough to tell me it was actually a downgrade from my entry level TomTom from 2010 and I am currently looking at the Garmin Drive 50 which stood out from the entire Garmin and TomTom range. Ok so £109 as opposed to £40, but still one of the cheaper models about.

How is the TomTom GO 50 £11 more then TomTom Start 50?
Start 50 = £40
Go 50 = £70
What's the main difference between the 2 models?
I would have paid £40 for the Start 50.
I would have paid an extra £11 for the Go 50 (£51).
But £70 for the Go 50, not as good a bargain.
I have the TomTom Go 910, how do these models compare?

Well I understand that is their business model nowadays, but there is no such thing as a free lunch, eventually they will expect you to pay for something or they will release a new model that makes your's obsolete. Plus with data connections they are data mining location, speed, usage hours etc just like Waze.
The good old tomtom One was useful for a long time, and all manner of free content was available online. But now, as the more cynical (realistic) of us believe, they will send updates to your device that deliberately cripple it in some way (Just like Android, IOS, Windows Phone/Windows. games consoles etc). I guess you can still get Chinese sat nav's that can still be freely enjoyed for many years.

if you can hold of one its a good deal.....but I got an Ex demo garmin (cannot remember the model) but it had European maps on, and free updates, from Peter Jones in London for £15.00......the only issue I had is that it was stuck in demo mode, so took abit of time on google to get it out, but eventually got there! No that was a bargain!

The whole point is TomTom Go updates speed cameras and maps often, all in one, built in, and live traffic update via data connection means it sets useful routes, although the maps are downloaded onto the SD card but the live data needs a connection (so I set initial route first while on wifi before I leave the house to minimise data use!)
Of course I couldn't possibly comment on things like cracks!!!
thabiz
30 Jun 16#37
On another note, how hard are these to "crack" and add free speed cams and new maps to these days?. The old tomtom's were great when you could do that.

I agree, you can, but it ends up being a full time job keeping things going, insurance is a FORTUNE for younger lads now and ALL money ends up going to keeping a car running, so it must end up being a case of working JUST to run a car to be able to go to work! :-( It never was much different, but when I was in my 20's there at least seemed SOME chance of progression, a better wage eventually, and a hope of having somewhere to live... one day!
thabiz
30 Jun 16#34
There's a lad a my local halfords and he is one of the best employees I have ever encountered. Extremely helpful and friendly, I see him changing light bulbs and wiper blades in rain and snow. He has been there for years now and is in his mid 20's with a family, but he still only has a cheap 125cc motorcycle.
I bet he isn't on more than £8 an hour and has practically no rights and hardly any holidays. (Yes on paper maybe they have certain rights and certain amount of holidays, but in reality they often exert so much pressure and instill fear into staff that it simply isn't true. This is the case for all low paid staff with insecure contracts, even those at local authorities. Even those with Union representation as Union's are so weak now.)
But, if you do your homework you can run a car quite cheaply, an old £500 diesel car of the right model year that qualifies for cheapish tax of £30-£115 per year. A Suzuki Alto, or buy a Micra and pay a little more in tax but probably cheaper parts and cheaper to fix if anything does go wrong. Do a basic oil change yourself once a year, do your homework on insurance and play about on comparison sites to figure out what is the cheapest option.

Glove box? Well, if so, you are in the car, phone or standalone unit they both need plugging in to run Sat nav software anyway (or it will flatten the battery pretty quick). Far more use keeping a battery pack in the glove box you can carry with you if the battery on your phone might run low while out and about.
My standalone unit hasn't been used for ages, it was taking room up in the glove box and I just took it out of the car today as I am changing the car tomorrow, it still works, but it's now in a bag with stuff I WON'T be putting back into the new one. No, my new car hasn't got built-in sat nav, I prefer the Android phone as I want regular updates (cheap - very!) and it will be fully updated whenever I change my phone too; plus I don't want to look down and LEFT to glance at the screen, for years I am used to it being in the corner of the windscreen where I can reach it, so didn't spend the extra for a built in unit, which would have been the main difference in the next higher model.
Since Android and iPhones run the software now I think they have become obsolete, you can run various versions on them. For me, TomTom Go is great on Android, costs 15 quid a year all in,(if you MUST pay for it!) but it gets regular updates, speed cams the lot included. I still use Waze sometimes as it can be useful for quick updates on local speed or incident info, but Tomtom Go for routing, although I have used Navigon which I didn't care for, being used to TomTom.

Its useful as a glovebox back up when your phone battery is dead.....my 5 year old tom tom (with european maps admittedly) has helped me out several times, both here and abroad, where my phone battery is lower than an ants wotsits or simply where waze can't find something!

I reserved yesterday and was called this morning that they don't have it in stock, I think staff bought it onestly :disappointed: Great find by the way.
Yes I saw that too, seems to be more stock available on that one. I am thinking the 50 Go for the extra £11 works out better if you want full EU map coverage.
Thanks OP. None in my area, however there are 50 Go's available with lifetime EU maps & traffic updates for £70. This is the same price as the 25 new, which I have reserved. Which is the better deal?

Not that bad of a price. I was going to grab this with my tesco double up at £90-100. But with a resistive screen, I had to get something that felt more like a smart phone and ended up with the GO 500.
Luckily I won it new of an eBay auction for £80, when it was retailing for £129 (very sale, normally £140+).
