I was move from one plan a year ago to 600 min unlimited data for £22 they won't do me any deal close to one plan. I have threatened to leave and received the puk code but stucked to this plan as I use over 130 Gig month. Is there anything I can do or ask to get a better deal. I have been with 3 since they launch back in 2002

moved from three to o2 and my data connection crumbled. thought I'd give the recent o2 deal a go but I've cancelled (inside 14day cooling off period) and moved back to three on this deal and my data speeds are flying again and I must say customer service of all the major carriers is rubbish, but three is certainly no worse than the others imho. happy to be on this for another 12months. cheap enough for a decent product for me not to worry about shopping around before this time next year. hot.

I'm curious - BT / 3 / O2 are doing good deals at the moment - but EE (direct) are quiet. Does anybody think they'll be throwing out some new offer towards the end of the month?

Is it the end the accounting quarter/year?

Is that why these deals seem to appear toward the end of June?

heat for me got 200 min deal, quidco showing tracked £50 just got to wait to see if it pays out. Got 9mbps download speed on H signal inside house, sky fibre @ 7.9 Mbps so quick even though no 4g signal. hopefully chromecasting is not using tethering data as such. If all works as planned will be ditching sky broadband !

Thanks for this OP. Whilst 3 could've handled existing customer retentions a lot better - been a customer since they first started up - not really going to find a better deal than is especially with unlimited internet.
Have to wait until my previous contract comes to an end within the next few days and changes to pay as you go to port my number across to the new sim. Quidco tracked within the first few hours of placing the order too.

Quidco normally tracks within a few hours. If you use the suggested FoxFi and/or other VPN-like app, by definition it is unlikely 3 could identify your tethered use compared to on-handet use. For data consumed without those apps, 3 seem vague about how they calculate used / remaining tethering bandwidth.

Doubt there's any advantage to direct connection tether. Obtain a cheap android handset that is not 3-branded. Install FoxFi. Use FoxFi to create hotspot. Abuse 3's AYCE handset data t&c at your wish. You may need a VPN to limit the impact of 3's throttling every day between 3pm to midnight, although FoxFi may be sufficient. Throttling & traffic shaping applies to the data connection regardless of tether type. 3's throttling and traffic-shaping policy can be viewed here.

According to Citi, BT accounts for about 42 per cent of mobile spectrum, with 28 per cent used by Vodafone, 14 per cent by O2 and 15 per cent by Three.

The combination of BT and EE is incredibly strong financially. It has got the financial ability to outcompete everyone in the market in how much they are willing to pay at the next spectrum sale.

Potentially, given how much spectrum they are already sitting on, BT is incentivised to strategically bid in the next auction to restrict the other operators in the market from increasing their spectrum portfolio . . . That could make life difficult for their competitors.

David Dyson chief executive of the UK’s smallest telecoms operator called on Ofcom to bring in “fairly significant restrictions” on BT and Vodafone in the next auction, which is expected before the end of the year. This could include forcing BT to “relinquish” spectrum before allowing it to buy any more.

Some analysts were surprised that the competition authorities did not ask BT to give up spectrum as part of it decision to approve the EE acquisition, although some added that Three could have acquired more spectrum in previous auctions.

Ofcom is still considering how to design the next auction. The sale of 4G spectrum in 2013 guaranteed spectrum for a fourth operator, a proposal that Mr Dyson would support this time round.

Can't really compare UK demographic with USA. They have huge area to cover to provide cell sites, so obviously have more costs to cover.

Comparing other providers in the UK though Three are not bad, they provide decent service and prices are on rise across the board... unless you want to go along with an MVNO who could give a cheaper deal but the service may suffer.

I was in a similar position to yourself, three of my work colleagues and I all went for the One Plan a few years ago now as we did a lot of back/night shifts and works' wifi took a battering to the point it got taken away by the bosses.

Anyways as you can imagine, the tethering was the main selling point, and we all gave it a good tonking on our respective packages. We were all well out of our 24 month period but just kept it rolling over as by that time 3 had canned the One Plan and didnt offer it anymore.

As it stood in February the three of them (at different points) had correspondence from 3 saying they would be getting automatically moved tariff if they didnt chose a new one themselves. I had not heard a peep out of them but was curious to how they were selecting people.

I was in my local 3 store getting a SIM for my wife around February time and by chance one of the regional managers was in store doing a visit and we got chatting.

I queried him on the whole issue regarding removing the one plan and he was very frank and honest with me.

Basically they sold themselves short with the one plan; people were buying it and using it esentially as a home broadband solution. Even more so businesses who were doing likewise. He said that the top 5% of users were using more bandwith than the other 95% combined but as the price was so low and the t&c's so lax they couldn't do a whole lot.

Apparently at the time he told me this they still had something like 23,000 people on the one plan who were just rolling over month to month with no intention of upgrading obviously because they would sacrifice the data on any new contract.

Rather than targetting the biggest hitters first he said it was all done randomly when they were sending out letters to advise people they would be getting moved by hook or by crook.

In the end i had to leave on my own accord in April as i moved house and the 3 signal was non existent but even at that point i was still on my original One Plan deal and had not heard a thing from them about me getting moved or my deal amended.

Sorry if thats common knowledge or stating the obvious but was interesting to hear from someone from 3's perspective.

Partner pays £18 for all you can eat data 600 mins and 2000 txt and 4gb tethering.

I just ended my phone included contract and went sim only for £20 pm that is 30gb with tethering and all you can eat minutes and text.

A few points:
Their service up until the start of this year was always great at my house then went down the drain and recently has been great again not sure what happened but it was bad but all is good now.

Left Vodafone years ago as their service and customer service as well as their prices were just pants and will never go back to them. EE have always been overpriced in my opinion and O2 lost me as a customer with the service I received when the would start adding random charges on my account and then cutting me off.

I'm paying £25 for 600 mins, unlmted texts and a.y.c.e.data. I took out two other sim only also for 12 months at a lower price as you get a 1000 mins to each other on 3. I've noticed others paying much less and that's annoying, especially as I took out extra sims. the one true bonus is that I'm tethering like a mama-jama; way past my allowance and they haven't noticed...yet! that's a full 5 months of 30 plus on tethering; sometimes I get in 70 plus. so, I'll stay put for now.

I was still on that until a couple of months ago. Got the dreaded letter from them giving me the offer of taking away the unlimited tethering, putting a 12gb cap on it and offering me an "exclusive £3 deduction" from the new £33 contract they were going to put me on.

Phoned them up to cancel a week and a half before I would be moved up to the new contract, they told me I had already been put on it and would have to pay at least one month of the contract. Took me about 4 hours of speaking to random people and being repeatedly transferred over a couple of days to finally get them to cancel my contract and give me my PAC code.

That "adult" site may be blocked by 3's adult content filtering, in which case the filtering can be removed by either changing APN from three.co.uk to 3internet, or by one of the methods mentioned at this 3 support page.
AndyRoyd
13 Jun 16 #110
If 3 can "see" that you are using a handset sim in anything other than a handset, you can expect the data block page. But if the 3 do not recognise the IEMI nor headers as being non-handset, then you might get away with abusing the terms and conditions of the handset sim.

I was recently kicked off the One Plan, only thing for me was id rather have AYCE data and under 1000 minutes more like half a month rather than what they gave me which was unlimited calls, texts and 4 gig data.

Though I only went over 2 gig once that is because I have fast landline internet and the phone internet was good for tethering when on holiday.

Lucky I still have 10 pre paid PAYG sims that have 1 months AYCE data for emergencies.

I got switched to an almost better deal when Three kicked me off the old plans...

Old:
Unlimited Data - no tethering
200 Mins
5000 Texts

£12.90 a month

New:
4GB Data - tethering
Unlimited Minutes
Unlimited Texts

£12.00 a month

No such thing as customer loyalty with 3. Bit like Sky

Have been with 3 for many a years and suddenly got a text message this April saying in basic terms, like it or lump it and let is know if you are not satisfied with your new tariff then leave us. It would have gone from £15 to £30 to stay on the same plan

They think the Feel at Home abroad is the killer to encourage us to stay, but bearing in mind roaming will be scrapped in 2017, they, 3, are risking a massive backlash

three take the flibbin pish. I was paying £30/month for an iPhone 4s contract over 2 years. When my contract was up they wanted £43/month for the current iPhone model at that time (I think it was the 6). The Indian lady tried to argue that the £13 extra cost was because it was a more recent model. She couldn't get her head around the fact that 2 years previously the iPhone 4S was the most current model, and then she said it must be down to inflation, so I did the calculations for UK inflation based on my previous deal whilst she was on the phone with me and asked her to do the deal (based on inflation) at £30.24. I think I was wasting my time.... Instead I bought a 128GB iPhone 6S upfront and went with a £17/month sim only deal which worked out much cheaper over the 2 years for a better phone with more memory.

I said don't worry about the pac as i'll think about it.

Phoned the next day as i'd decided to take the BT package for £16 and they offered the above for £9 instantly, i'd been with 3 for approx 4 years.

I was paying £21 pm for unlimited everything as i was on the one plan, just with the BT deal i get 15GB and unlimited mins/texts and they offer tethering now, after cashback for just under £8 pm.

I did use their feel at home service a lot but mainly for work trips, but wasn't impressed by the speed when abroad, even in Paris Orly, it was slow. (work reimburse any costs as i was fed up with carrying two mobiles)

yep- me neither. Contract ended months ago, i'm still on £15/mo, AYCE everything. tethering is only 4gb but I don't really care - it seems not to count most of my tethering activity when i get onto a vpn.

I tried to get this deal last week. I am out of contract and had given my notice of cancellation. I saw this and called them up to see if I could transfer to this plan, and stay with 3. They wouldn't do it at all, as they claim it is for new customers only. In fact, they wouldn't offer me anything to stay with them.

Cold three do Unlimited everything for £15 which is further reduced by haggling/threatening to quit - hence paying £8~ a month.

12 Jun 16 #56
The issue is the cynical way they massively under charged customers to build market share and destroy competition, waited til the point they had bought a monopoly position with O2 and then hiked their prices across the board - despite making cleverly worded promises to the UK government not to increase prices for years after their merger. My PAYG data bolt on went up 67% in one year. It is a scary sign of things to come as the Chinese government (through pretend private enterprises) buys more and more of the world's industries.

I am glad their merger has been blocked by the EU (even if realistically that was more done to carry favour with the UK population just before the Brexit vote), it is likely the cause of their first semi-decent deal in a year.

Walking through Boston last week and there was a board outside the "3" shop advertising all sim only contracts were half price for 12 months?
Can't remember if it said they were 12 month contracts too?

Don't know if that would be a better deal over term or not and didn't actually go in and enquire so haven't got all the details, sorry.

Just wondered if anyone else had noticed or been offered anything instore?
steve543

dazza1112
12 Jun 16 #50
I have been with 3 a few years and was due for an upgrade. The prices they wanted for new phone updates were ridiculous. In some cases over £50 per month, and they weren't great plans. I've kept my Samsung S5 and gone sim only with them.
Unlimited minutes - 8gb data - unlimited texts - free tethering £16pm rolling 1 month which i thought was pretty good.
Down side is I've only had h+ where I live for the last couple of weeks when usually it's mainly 4g.
I bought my daughters 3 phones through quidco in December and I've still not had the cash back
hukdme
12 Jun 16 #49
Totally agree with you. Three were appalling with their behavior - never again
initially giving unlimited data packages only to withdraw them once the network had been updated to 4G

il never go with three again.
danielhodson
12 Jun 16 #48
I've dodged it for a long while but finally had a letter. Their offer of what they'd move me onto was ridiculous. I spent 30 minutes on the phone threatening to leave and settled on £12 a month for 4gb capped usage, unlimited minutes & texts.
tariq3877
12 Jun 16 #47
I had 2 contacts and once I upgraded one with 2gb hotspot they ended unlimited hotspot on my other left me to buy an additional hotspot contract from EE.
Not happy at all waiting for my contract to finish and never 3 again. I m using VODAFONE to tether and it's great.

That's an amazing deal. I had to fight tooth and nail to get to £9pm for ult mins text 4gb data.

I would sign up again if they were doing uld mins text data for £15.

The best I have seen is for £20. So how did you do it?
bma1445
12 Jun 16 2 #42
I also got booted off the one plan, now on vodafone's 20GB plan, and the signal is much improved. Also - if they can effectively offer this for £16 a month - why on earth did they kick everyone off?!

Not sure if 3 allows internal transfers, but if they don't you can port to a PAYG sim and then back again.
Tones

I'm really confused by all the people slating 3 for the price hike.
Yes, they raised the price on a deal that really was an outstanding price, it was going to happen at some point.
Then you have 2 choices, cancel your contract with no fee's involved and go to the second best deal. The one that you would've chosen if this wasn't available anyway so you have lost nothing.
Continue using 3 and pay the new fee, which is still reasonable.

What's the issue!?
mydan99
12 Jun 16 #31
I'm paying £20/month for unlimited everything with 3. I heard about them cutting out unlimited data but haven't had a call or letter yet. didn't realise they were hiking priced too.

I'll never go back to three. They hiked my bills up from £12.50 to £25 earlier this year and took away unlimited data. Much more money for less service. Sounds fair?!
Hero878 to evostick47
12 Jun 16 1 #12
Stop being so cheap. No other network offers all that for £12.50 so it going up is still cheaper than other networks.
WBRacing to evostick47
12 Jun 16 #17
Likewise, but then with less competition in the now oligopoly market has seen prices rise massively across the board. Don't like it? Don't pay for it then but the alternatives aren't great. I phoned them to get my PAC code and got offered a decent deal so stayed but would have happily gone elsewhere.

The prices are still considerably better than the frankly obscene charges the companies get away with in North America. An example there is $65pm for unlimited calls and texts and 6GB of data. Three do that with 8GB of data for £25...

of course Three did not that Vodafone recently started overcharging people recently and also refused to admit there was a problem until people started getting ofcom involved. Also not to mention worst 4g signal in London (central) - can't even watch bbc I player without buffering all the time. luckily for lm now rid of them after they paid me the compensation for months and months misery.
