Students get it cheaper direct from Motorola. Log in via UniDays to get 15% off, making it £143.65

Possible topcashback at 7.7% could make it as cheap as £132.59

Wow really cool helpful reply, you're an asset to the community

Anybody can apply for an NUS card by registering on cheap courses. You'll also find that students use HUKD. As a student myself, I am able to use the discount code

As an adult, you may have children, children go to school to study therefore becoming students. Use their log in!

I thought lack of notification LED would be a problem but I haven't found it an issue on the Moto X Play i have which has the 'moto display' capability and I'd hope this model would too. I lift or wiggle the phone and any notifications are displayed. Not sure if the Moto 4 G4 version 4, 4g has this ability but would hope it does.

I have a dual sim Moto G,but grabbed the vodaphone P9 lite,as the specs seemed better than the newer Moto's,but I am no phone expert!.

Great free launcher http://forum.xda-developers.com/android/apps-games/app-cm13-trebuchet-laucher-rom-6-0-1-t3350696

"Motorola’s own features, such as they are, are mostly highly useful and unobtrusive. The gestures, for instance, which allow you to quickly switch on the torch by lightly karate-chopping the phone’s screen, or activate the camera by quickly twisting it twice in succession, are pure genius.
The Moto G4’s Active Display is just as handy. It displays recent notifications, the time and the date whenever you pick up the phone"

I also have P8 lite and is slower than Moto G 3gen thanks to EMUI.

I really wish they'd make a 'mini' version that is the original Moto G size. A 4" screen is plenty big enough for me, a bigger and I struggle to comfortably have it in my jeans pocket. Also a smaller version with the same other specs would surely have better battery life too?

I've just bought one direct from Motorola, got it for ££159.99 using UKWELCOME10. Purchased on Friday, been getting good communication from Motorola. They emailed after ordering to confirm my order, the to say it was being customised, then to say it was packaged awaiting pick up, then to say it was with DHL, then DHL contacted me to say they have it and I'll receive it on Monday. Great customer service so far. I went for 16GB version as if your not getting the big ram version no point spending the extra as 6.0 let's you use SD card as system storage, imho a fingerprint isn't worth £50 extra! I had considered a honor 5x,but after having a shot Emui.... No, it is awful. No launcher is going to fix EMUI. Looked at a onePlus X, but wanted a 5.5" screen. I think the Moto G4 is guaranteed updates for 3 years also! I think its good value for money. No doubt the Smart Ultra fan boys will be along soon to slaughter this deal, but hey ho that's HDUK for you.

Have you checked out the Sony Xperia Z3 Compact? Almost the same size screen as the original moto G (4.5" vs 4.6") and much thinner (good for jeans) and it has amazing battery life. £150 + £10 top up from vodafone online.

Bobbi Betamax
11 Jun 16 1 #75
I see a few comments about the Huawei Honor, P9 Lite, SU6 and various Chinese phones being a better deal than the Moto G4.

This might be true on the hardware side but for me the strong history of Android updates on the Motos is a massive plus, the other phones mentioned are definitely worse in this respect. My Moto G1 is still well supported by the main apps I use over 2 and a half years after purchase. There may well be unofficial software update routes for some of those other phones but the vast majority of users are rightly turned off by the prospect of faffing around with various roms and whatnot.

Throw in a welcome camera upgrade and I'm close to being sold on this one, the size is maybe the only issue for me.

I've got the Moto G4 Plus 4GB version. The 4GB version is a treat to use. Blazing fast and smooth, with very little Motorola Android customisation. I don't miss the notification light. The camera is excellent. The dual sim
option allows more customisation than the Huawei Honor 5x. You can use two sims, plus a micro sd. The phone even comes with sim adapters to convert your nano sim to a micro sim. Having used the Moto G4 Plus for about a week, I've now decided to get rid of my Nexus 6 and Note 4.

On tesco website the description for each phone says "It is a Moto Pure phone, which means you can use it on any major carrier and easily switch any time you choose". Motorola moto g vs Sony z3 (150) vs P9 vs that chinese phone from the other day
Genuinely interested in opinions as i was about to get the z3 for the same money, so wondering why no one has mentioned it in this thread.
thanks all
titan131
11 Jun 16 #85
Depends what you want. Sony Z3 compact has a meh screen but really fast processor/graphics. No fingerprint scanner but great battery life. P9 lite is less powerful but has a better screen, fingerprint scanner and good battery life. If it were me I would get either the sony z3 compact or the P9 lite, probably the P9 lite. The 4.6" of the z3 compact is a little too small for me and i don't game so I dont need the powerful cpu and graphics.

Edit: I guess the moto gen 4 is OK but I already have a Smart phone Ultra 6 and the specs are really simular for £50 less.

love the moto g series & owned the lot - i'm thinking this will be the combobreaker with a 5.5in screen and no stereo speakers (you really notice the absence on g3, i'm sure the bigger g4 screen exasperates this) or waterproofing (rain wrecked my g1's mic, though the phone itself still goes strong). not saying it's not an excellent phone, but i preferred the 4.5in of the g1/2 so this is too darn big to comfortably use or pocket for me.

edit

never had anything like this on my g3 (16gb2/2gb), think i've had an app crash and the device locking on the close/report dialogue once in 6 months of everyday use including at least an hour a day of gaming.

Same. Maybe go for the moto g3? Any of the htc phones will do you good too at 5inch but they are more pricey. A used m9 is around 180, m8 around 130 and M7 around 80

I would concur but the Xiaomi doesn't have any warranty in the UK. Looking forward to a UK launch.

12 Jun 16 #143
It's hard to make a decision considering we don't have 100 percent confirmation on what the op3 will look like build materials will be and specs. And That all important price tag. We have leaks but won't know for sure in-room launch day. I'm holding out for op3 then making a decision

12 Jun 16 #144
I would have agreed ... except the trouble is, the Xiaomi doesn't support band 20, leading to potentially reduced network coverage.
Searcher2
12 Jun 16 #145
Agreed... so for the Xiaomi that's no UK warranty, no 4G for O2 and Vodaphone users, no water resistance and no ability to have dual SIMs & microSD in at the same time. The last one is a deal breaker for me with no UK warranty close behind.

I wonder if Tesco plan to sell the Moto g4 plus version?
cmacron
12 Jun 16 #147
The G4 Plus is exclusive to Amazon and Motorola as I understand
jameswheatley909
12 Jun 16 #148
I got mine from moto maker and it is dual sim and working. I confirmed with them before ordering and all g4s from moto maker are dual sim. Mines a g4 plus btw and the camera is brilliant. Using UNIDAYS from a hot uk deals member I paid £195 and have 7% cash back in the post. It is too big really. I would have preferred 5 inch for easier one handed operation but wanted dual sim. Also doesn't have NFC or miracast. I'm using freedom pop sim and it works a treat on 4g.

Yes, but im on EE which is fine without that band. Like I say, they are great phones , but I love my MI.

When was the last time you had to make a claim on warranty for a phone? I never have and i have been through a few! Dual sim was a must have for me until recently too.
jameswheatley909
12 Jun 16 #151
China mobiles made for the domestic Chinese market have lower build quality IMO. My THL lasted 7 months before the emmc failed. Also, the software can be buggy.
Badongkadong
12 Jun 16 #152
Funny you should say that, my Z3 has developed a screen fault (edge of display discolouration) which I will get repaired under warranty. Shouldn't happen but it's nice to know that it's available.

12 Jun 16 1 #153
The last one was a Moto G Gen 2 at Christmas which had to be sent to Tesco twice as the phone refused to switch on/charge when the battery ran down completely. They gave up trying to repair it and offered me a selection of phones to choose from - received a Moto G G3. How do you think you would get on sending it twice to China?
mistermoneysaver

I wont have to. Will just claim on my nationwide bank account. Im not saying this is a bad deal BTW just trying to explain alternatives

Since the JL sim free is dual sim version... is there a chance the tesco sim free could be dual sim as well?
Searcher2
13 Jun 16 1 #156
Yes. There are other suppliers advertising dual SIM G4s on the white model e.g. Lambadatek, Kikatek, PC Business World. Having read this thread I would think that all UK stock is dual SIM. It won't take long for someone to find out for sure though... I'm hanging on a bit.

Just picked up my Moto G4 from Tesco - not dual sim and after about 10 minutes of initial use (unplugged and straight out of the box) the handset was getting very warm. I think it will be going back and I will stick with my Galaxy Note 2 that is starting to show its age!

13 Jun 16 #169
I got one from Tesco today and some sim was already stuck in??
Is this normal? I never had a sim in a new phone before, also the box must have been opened as the see though sellotape was broken. Although they stacked the silver tape with avoid on top of this. Feels like I got a second hand phone.
I got this as I have the first gen and love it, so don't have to get used to a new thing :-)

Club card boost. They're doubling up the value of vouchers at the moment, which could make this a sensational purchase.

Not sure what the maximum amount I could use is, but I have £80 in vouchers from the last six months (just from petrol purchases), which would make this essentially free.

Why is Boost at Tesco ending?
We've listened to what customers want from the scheme and heard that it needs to be simpler to understand and easier to use. Ending Boost at Tesco means that we can focus on a simpler approach that's appealing to everyone and which customers can benefit from when they want, not just at certain times of the year.
What will Boost at Tesco be replaced with?
We want you to get the best out of your vouchers throughout the whole year, not just at certain times so we are reinvesting in more ways to earn points, like double points events, and making our Boost Partners offer even better. You can already get up to four times the value of your vouchers when you boost them with our Partners online, at a time that suits you.

I brought one in store via tesco direct as the mobile shop had them for £179.I kicked off about pricing and the mobile shop staff said it's because direct and tesco mobile are two separate companies within tesco.I ordered the phone via direct and got it next day.Really love it so went in yesterday to order another one and low and behold they had gone up by £30.I complained and showed my receipt from Monday and asked if they would price match it and got offered a £30 store card after I mentioned we spend quite a bit of money each month (shopping etc). Anyway went to order on the system in store and found the same phone for £159 (I think it's locked to tesco), used wife's clubcard boost points worth £50 and got the £30 voucher.I also boosted my clubcard points to get £100 off my phone.Top marks to the manager and staff in Tesco Andover for good customer support.

Received this yesterday £28 after club card boost, put my newly purchased three sim in and created hotspot for home use, getting nearly 9mbps speed on H signal which is quicker than my sky broadband @ 7mbps. Screen is huge for a phone and 1080p with good colours so I'm watching sky o(((n this instead of using up my tethering allowance, hope fully at some point a HDMI output out the USB will be possible as a software update. Impressive for price (full price that is) point for a well known manufacturer of phones.
Tescos have sent 16gb single sim version.
