It's outrageous they add £7.40 for each item for Post and Packing so that for the steam controller and the link it works out at £70.78.

what's the battery like on these ? does it charge off USB like a PS4 pad or do you need actual batteries ?
kos1c to chrisredmayne
2 Jun 161#14
Comes with AA battery's that you remove the back plate and slide them into the hand grips. Can't remember if it was 2 or 4 batteries.
It's controller, controller link (blue tooth hub) that plugs into pc. I believe there's a USB cable to update the controller, might have plug and play style as well.
I used the controller for less than an hour, repacked and sold on. Got it a month before mass release and hated it, it's a large learning curve and I didn't want to deal with it.

my fs thread has a few small bits of information.
It comes with a tiny little dongle, that plugs into the use port on the pc directly.
Or if you're wanting the USB port on the desk. In the box is a USB to micro USB cable to a small USB stand that also comes in the box.
Box content;
controller
2x AA batteries
USB dongle
USB to micro cable

Piggybacking the comments that say you don't have to buy a bundle. The Game I got mine from didn't show them separately, so I just asked, and they sold them to me on their own. I later went to another Game, though, that did advertise them on their own for £39.99 each.

Cheap and nasty, I have one and have decided I'm better off using a wired XBox One controller. I'm also disappointed that there is too much lag with the Steam Link even with a wired connection to play Project Cars or FPS games.

Your kidding right, the Steam controller is horrible. Even a standard XBox 360 controller is better in games. The gimmicky pad on the right is just not as good as a proper joystick

I like it, but each to their own. A lot easier when you work out you can use community custom setups (like for Fallout 4 which as mentioned above is crap until you tweak it)

I bought the steam link from Game for £39.99, and then returned it the next day for a refund as it was terrible. Imo it's not fit for purpose. Heard the controller is good though.

whoever says it's not fit for purpose had it set up wrong. needs a gig network, not 100mb or wireless.

He has a point, I'm sure the steam controller has more parts to it than an elite controller, plus the development alone for the steam controller and yet it costs a third!

I bought the steam link for £50 to link my main gaming pc (in my loft) to my bedroom TVs. The device is amazing! To get a decent performance out of it I need to use a wired network connection, however my house is already wired up in most rooms, so this is not an issue. I'd highly recommend getting both a game pad and the steam link as they work very well together.

3 Jun 161#41
Just don't agree. The steam controller uses much cheaper look and feel plastic, feels like no development went into the ergonomic design. It has no interchangeable parts like the Elite and the Elite's interchangeable parts are all metal. The triggers on the Steam controller have very limited throw and poor accuracy through the range. I have both and agree the Elite controller is slightly over priced but it is head and shoulders above the rest on the market and leagues better than the Steam controller so I can understand MS asking a premium when it's probably the best around. If my Elite controller got stepped on and broken I would buy another straight away, if the Steam controller got stepped on I would not replace it. I am not even expecting the Steam controller to be Elite quality but for me it doesn't even match standard One or 360 controllers in quality or design. As you can tell I'm really disappointed with mine

Thanks just bought steam link to try ,I've got the nvidia game shield tablets in the house but wanted to try this,I bought the steam controller but have found it very difficult to navigate ( I'm older ) and moved back to MY gameshield controller .i only wish Nvidia released a wireless dongle for PC as good controller but only wireless if connected through gameshield ,also rumble only works when plugged into PC

Sweet so the gig network would stop adding a second player for no reason, and then stop it using both players on one pad at the same time. Oh wait, no, imo I think it shouldn't be doing that.

I use my GameSir gamepad with my steam link. It works flawlessly if connected via a usb cable (wireless connection to the Steam Link doesn't work). The reason I bought the Gamesir gamepad was because it is compatible with many devices, including my Android phone, iPad, Windows devices and Xbox One. I'd highly rate this gamepad if you are worried about the Steam Controller.

I've tried connecting my Steam Link directly to my router which is 100mbps and everything runs smooth without any issues or slow performance. I normally use a gigabit switch so that I can connect all devices in the Steam Link network to that one switch. The router is then just connected to the switch, meaning that local traffic is 1gbps and the internet traffic has a 100mbps ceiling. Flawless gaming experience.

But the controller I don't like it as much, feels weird not having actual buttons. Tried to play portal and just got to frustrated with it

You shouldn't really need to use it for Portal. I think it's mainly designed for those PC games that don't natively support a controller.

What it feels like often bears little resemblance to how good something is, the steam controller screams out that it was a device built by scientists and engineers and not designers. The ergonomics of the steam controller is generally better(although it depends on the person, claw of death xbox types might not like it's looser PS like feel), the materials are the right ones for the device they function as they should and are hard wearing.
Most importantly the steam controller is flexible, there really isn't any game you can turn your steam controller to and with a very easy and painless bit of tweaking get a perfect set up for your own preference it plays anything. The Elite and all the console controllers straight up can't do that, and even with tweaks using third party software that isn't user friendly some games will just be unplayable.
Some people respond to gimmicks and the perception is more important than the physical reality, that's ok, but for PC gamers usually actual reality beats out form over function.
If you have bad accuracy on your controller, could be your controller is just not working or has a bad setting, it's a piece of consumer electronics a certain number of faulty units is par for the course. Accuracy on mine is great, and it's fitted out with mostly high accuracy hall sensors so it's a step up from a lot of controllers and even high end joysticks in that regard.

a word of warning. The controller is the dogs nuts for RTS. I use it for guild wars 2 and cant stop raving about it. But its like holding a wet fish if you want to use for anything use - you can hold it but you cant do anything with it apart from smash it on the ground.

I think you and I will have to agree to disagree  My view is after owning both the Elite is just that, a high end Elite product and the Steam controller is a fail. I'm struggling to follow your point here. I haven't used either controller yet so I have no skin in the game. However your point appears to be that a controller that costs 3.5 times more than another one is significantly better. Is that your point - or am I missing something?

4 Jun 16#64
You missed the beginning of the discussion. Someone was claiming the Steam controller was much better than the XBox Elite controller. I have both and think the Steam controller is a poorly designed, cheap plastic waste of money. I was quite disappointed with mine if you hadn't guessed. I never expected Elite standards but I expected something a lot better than what I got, to me an old 360 controller is much better.

Updating my post after getting my controller. I can now play fps games like Mw2 with a controller and actually do 'OK'. My first game I went 13-10 on TDM whilst still getting used to the controls ect. Won't never be as good as K&M but it's soemthing! Gyro helps so much with aiming and once it's all set up and you get used to the controls you're all good.
Personally I don't think it feels cheap and plasticy, it feels a lot better than my 360 controller.

I would rather wait for a steam controller 2 if they ever decide to revise it. with 3.5mm audio jack and rechargeable micro usb port. bit ridiculous that they released this alongside 2 already brilliant pads (xbox one and ps4) that already have those features.

Having owed these since release I've had plenty of time to play with them and know them well. The Steam link can work perfectly, but you really need a decent PC (I upgraded to a GTX 960 for 1080p gameplay) and a wired connection for lag free game play - however bundle this with the Steam controller and now I can play all my PC games on my Main TV. the Steam controller isn't better then a keyboard and mouse for FPS games, then it isn't always better than a PS4 pad for other games - but it can work with ANY PC game! See this is the genius here - it takes a little tweaking and getting used to but it does work - as for not have a rechargeable battery mine have been in for 4 months now and I've not had to change them...
Opening post
This is the lowest price around by far I think.
