I also have a 970 and use powerline adapters with no problems however it wasn't always that way. Originally I had TP-Link AV500's and had no end of problems, frequent disconnections and poor quality. Change to Edimax 600's and haven't had any issues yet.

Terrible hardware. The steam link is very temperamental and the controller is poor.
I would only go with this if your an ATI gfx card user as you don't have great choices for game streaming. If you have an nvidia gtx card then get an android biz or fire tv and use the moonlight app.
Even a generation 1 raspberry pi is better at game streaming

Strange, as I have a 970 and I've never had any problems streaming with this via powerline adapters.

Did Steam boxes every take off?
Seemed to have been a flop although I think Dell have released a second generation one!

Steam Machines? No, they've sold pretty poorly compared to consoles, but then that's to be expected because Steam will run on any computer so a very small percentage of PC gamers will be buying them. They're pretty good machines for the price, but chances are PC users need a computer for purposes outside of the living room so they'll buy a desktop or a laptop before a Steam Machine.
But what's on offer here is a Steam Link, which is a little box that streams audio and video from your PC, so it's a great substitute for an actual PC/Steam Machine in the living room.
It's great that they're discounted on Steam - with the hefty postage charge they're not worth buying at full price. But if you need Steam credit you can get a Link + Controller + £20 credit for £75 at Game, effectively saving you another £5.

I just got both from Game earlier this week. Haven't been able to try the steam link yet as there's always someone watching the TV. As for the controller, I love it. I'm able to play Civilization 3-4 using it, as well as browsing for a game tips and trick using the controller as well. Without needing to reach for the keyboard even for typing. Might get some time to get used to, and choosing the right template for you.
I bought the Steam Link for £39.99 last night. Thank God for their refund system.

Their refund system is wait until it gets delivered then request a refund and send it back. I've been waiting 2 weeks for my refund.

I got a lone of the Steam controller after I bought a Link. I really tried for a couple of days to like it but it was just holding me back compared to a 360 controller.

Definitely personal choice. Might see what the guy I know who has one feels about it. I think at the end of the day it was just a pet project from Valve that had retail potential more than anything - rather than a 100% serious attempt to replace the controller.

Quite possibly but I had the controller and never felt it really that intuitive to use and still had problems with some titles, in the end I sold it on. It's always going to be a personal choice though.

Yeah this. Possible to play Football manager with a controller, for example.
Plus huge backwards compatibility

If you want Steam credit as well, the link, controller and £20 credit is £74.99 at GAME (online only)
I have the Steam link and it works well but you really need a wired connection.
The Steam controller I would give a miss, its not all its cracked up to be. But each to their own of course.

I think the main appeal for the steam controller is using it on games which flat out refuse to work with. Say you wanted to kick back and play Sims, older Star Wars games, old rpgs (say morrowind or something), you would use this. I don't feel its meant to directly replace the 360/One controllers.

The controller seems to be a love/hate thing. Some people love it, some hate it.
I guess it's a sort of specialist item in the sense that it's great for playing M/KB type games without an actual M/KB.

Anybody considering this, who is also considering a Steam wallet top up.
It might be worth having a look at the offer from Game, you'd effectively get £5 free store credit for Steam when you add a £20 wallet card.
CDKeys are out of stock for the £20 cards, but do have £50 for £45.59. But in true honesty, if you find something to spend £50 on in this evidently abysmal sale, I will take my hat off to you

May be worth getting Steam Link on its own and just gaming with an Xbox 360/One controller, from what I've read the Steam Controller is a bit naff.

The Steam Controllers tech is far superior to an XBox 360/One/Elite controller.
