Carbon steel means it will rust. The description mentions it that much you would almost believe it was a beneficial product feature (better than plastic though:D).

What a silly comment, it is not the carbon in steel that makes it rust!
The majority of steel contains carbon (less than 2% though); in this context a carbon steel tool would be much better than a mild steel one, but not as good as a stainless steel one (but one will not be able to buy a stainless steel spade for £4.50), so being carbon steel is clearly a beneficial feature.
Are these tools any good: they are just fine for digging the garden, but not really strong enough for anything else, that is after all what they are being sold to do.

Blah, blah. Don't take me for a fool.
I know more about steel than most people and having 5 mentions of 'carbon steel' in the title and description will make some individuals think that it is somehow endowing these Implements with better than average abilities which it will not.
You can pick up properly forged, hardened and also stainless spades and forks from places like Wicked for around £10 which will give better value for money than this ever will. My experience so far with Sovereign products is that they are cheap Chinese junk.
BTW in regard to your reply "it is not the carbon in steel that makes it rust!". Yes, obviously I never said it will. I stated that this will inevitably rust as an aide for those people who will confuse this for something which it is not.
So get of your high horse with your "silly" and pointless reply.
You could have attached a link to the following which would be a far better deal and has a 5 year warranty: http://www.wickes.co.uk/Wickes-Garden-Digging-Spade-1000mm-Stainless-Steel/p/500124?CAWELAID=120135120000010448&CAGPSPN=pla&CAAGID=17408411932&CATCI=aud-162418604692:pla-193347849652&utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_term=&utm_campaign=Google%20Shopping%20-%20Garden&tmcampid=&tmad=c&tmplaceref=D13POsPn&utm_content=sD13POsPn|pcid|43364563852|pkw||pmt||&gclid=CjwKEAjwp-S6BRDj4Z7z2IWUhG8SJAAbqbF3N1z8JounwUxgYKceA8pTCH4UiC53gdVSRfk62cDsVBoCI1Xw_wcB

Digging with rusty garden tools makes it a lot more work. I'll stick to my Spear and Jackson Stainless ones with a 10 year guarantee.

what a lot of argument over a fork n spade! if all you need a something to dig up a bit of soil for plants etc then personally i think 4.50 is a bargain. i'd need something a bit more heavy duty due to the amount of stones in the ground in my area-forks are forever being broken in this house! tho i may get one of these as a backup.

Is Stainless steel not more brittle than carbon steel, which would probably bend before snapping?
I'm not stirring, actually curious.

Remember these are also border spades, also known as ladies' spades in the past. Ideal for digging in restricted space but the smaller head and handle is not so great if you have a lot if digging to do.
