From moneysaving expert
Available to: 83% of UK
Speed: Up to 76Mb
Download limit: Unlimited
Traffic shaping? Yes, at peak times
Contract length: 18 months
Deal requires line rental? Yes
Inclusive calls? Anytime to landlines
New line installation: Free
Until Mon 14 Nov, new and existing customers can get SSE's Ultrafast Fibre Broadband + Talk Anytime* package with unlimited superfast downloads up to 76Mb, line rental and inclusive anytime calls, on a 18-month contract.

The deal's available to 83% of the UK (you're told when applying whether you can get it). Here's how it works...

Sign up now. Go via SSE, select your region then choose the Ultrafast Fibre Broadband + Talk Anytime package.
Pay line rental monthly. You have to pay £16/mth for line rental as there's no upfront option.
Fibre broadband's 'free' during the 18-month contract. This'll jump up to £25 after 18 months so diarise to switch at this time. You'll also get sent a free router with no delivery costs.
Anytime calls £5/mth. You have to pay £5/mth for anytime calls to UK landlines as part of your package, even if you don't make phone calls.
If you add up the cost of the line rental and anytime calls over 18 months it's £378, equivalent to £21/mth.

- Need more calls? Calls to UK landlines are included, mobiles cost more. Full info on call charges below.

- No line/switching from cable? Installation's free.

Also says tcb is up to £143 but as cashback is not guaranteed then its not included in the price!

This is slightly cheaper than BT but The BT one does have sports as well

No pay up front either like talk talk or BT

Switched over last week to the Ultrafast product and the Topcashback had tracked within an hour of the order being placed thus making it £13.40 a month for 18 months.
The Technicolor TG589vac router is almost devoid of any information in the box or on the internet.

The only hiccup we had was receiving a letter a week before change over that a technician would be calling on the morning of changeover.
We already had fibre so I was a bit perplexed but I thought SSE are new to the table and might be wanting to ensure the switch goes smoothly.
The day came and no show for engineer so I just recabled myself as I would have done anyway.

I have this too. I currently have fibre broadband with BT, and due to migrate to SSE tomorrow. SSE insisted an engineer visit us needed though.

On the inclusive calls, this is a big pricing strategy change to the rest on the market who seem to think it acceptable to charge 17p to connect a call.

This looks too good to be true, I'm currently with PlusNet and they have upped their fee to £38 which is robbery so I'm looking to get out. They do provide a good service and I always get a 72MB line when I check to be fair. Would appreciate people who already have a connection to comment as this would save a lot of money if they provided a reliable connection.

Cheap deal - pretty much unbeatable. Big potential problems, though, depending on who you listen to - see previous thread.

Tip - get an appropriate commitment from them in writing via the online chat facility before you sign up. Then you'll have something to use to get out of the 18 month contract if things go pear-shaped.

Have just switched to these myself. customer services are very good so far in trying to sort out bt openreach who are a nightmare! all up and running now so very happy. speeds are great. The provided hub is wireless pretty basic but is dual band and coverage in my flat is better than the sky hub v.2 which, admittedly isn't saying much..

13 Jun 16 #25
pretty much every broadband provided manages the load on their network. I don't imagine you'll notice with an 80Mbit connection. sky do the same and I never noticed the throttling at 30Mbit
Anon32
13 Jun 16 #26
Whats the speeds then? I have the free sky offer and they are not budging! Saying free broadband is all they can do so line rental will go to full price despite the fact the half price line rental and £50 bill credit is out!

So looking to leave. My old place i used to get 14mb sec so was fast enough but at my new house i only get 5.6mb! its constant and streams sky sports in hd ok but can be a little slow if more than one person using it

Let me know how it goes please?

Contact Plusnet and see if they will price match, that's what I did when my contract was up and a similar SSE deal came up. I'm paying the equivalent of £24.50 for 78/20 unlimited and phoneline currently, not as good as this but I'm happy sticking with Plusnet.

14 Jun 16 #30
I get 70+mb consistently with a ping of around 9ms.
Not had any issues for the year that I've been with them, they said I could get an offer very similar to this if I signed up to another contract BTW if anyone else is with them and wanted to extend it for another year. Same as this deal unlimited calls etc.
No other company would say 'hey, fancy swapping to another awesome deal?'
They just leave you on their ripoff pricing for as long as they can get away with it for.
beardyt0m
14 Jun 16 #31
The T&Cs say you can only get cashback if switching from BT/Plusnet. Therefore the Website only works if you have one of those. You can still get the deal by phoning them up but you won't get any cashback.

I originally signed up for this deal but after reading comments about traffic management decided to cancel and go for the cheap Sky deal (£61/year). I'd rather have no traffic management on standard broadband than heavily traffic-managed fibre.

I looked at this the other day but could not find the traffic management or fair use policy. I spoke to one of them on chat and they sent me some info which is vague to say the best (see below). Because of that I am going to stay well clear as I am a heavy user. For others it might be ok though

2. FAIR USE
2.1. Usage of our Service beyond levels which we regard to be reasonable for a residential broadband product will slow down our service and affect the network for all our customers.
2.2. The Service is provided for a legitimate user who uses the service in accordance with our terms and conditions i.e. not for business use or for illegal purposes.
2.3. Where illegitimate use of our broadband product is suspected, we may contact you to discuss the matter and may suspend or terminate the service if illegitimate use continues.
2.4. For our usage based broadband services we may take action to manage the networks’
performance during periods of high demand to ensure that our customers receive optimum performance at all times. Please refer to the Traffic Management section of our Broadband Products and Charges information for more details.

BROADBAND TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT POLICY
· Our network operator undertakes traffic management to ensure that our customers receive optimum performance at all times.
· The principles of this network management policy are:
· To make sure that time-critical applications like Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) are always prioritised.
· To protect interactive applications like web-browsing and Virtual Private Network (VPN) from non-time sensitive download traffic.
· To flex the network under demand to cope with normal peaks and troughs from day to day and month to month.
- To flex the network in the event of unusual demands in traffic or disaster situations such as a network failure.
· To provide a ‘quality of service’ effect, meaning multiple applications running on the same line interact with each other effectively, and use of high demand protocols like Peer-to-Peer (P2P) doesn’t swamp time-sensitive traffic such as online gaming or a VoIP call.
· Traffic types are identified in real-time based on a combination of port, source IP address and DPI signature detection. This allows our network operator at any given time to manage the network capacity and prioritise time sensitive traffic by reducing the throughput of the other less time sensitive protocols.

25 Jun 16 1 #83
Just to balance this out a bit, my experience has been positive.

Speeds are OK (slightly lower than with BT, but nothing of any consequence) and although they appear to drop a bit in the evening everything (including HD iPlayer) is fully functional. No idea about torrents though - don't need them.

Speedtest.net shows higher speeds than speedof.me, but no way of knowing which is correct.

As for the switchover, everything ran very smoothly. No apparent gap in service at all.

So far, I have to say it's incredibly good value - and it's just £24.50 a month, as against BT's 'special offer' of £37.49. Quite a saving - with cashback on top.

It's no longer available to everyone - T&C Version 2: Updated 6 July 2016

1. 18 months free fibre broadband is only available to existing SSE Energy customers (customers
who have an existing energy contract with us).
You must purchase an eligible broadband
product with an eligible phone package (including line rental) together from SSE on an
18-month fixed term contract
drunken_prozac
22 Jul 16 #105
It's because when Sky sort out your broadband they use the cables in the ground to your house (BT's cabling), BUT, they use their own routers inside the green cabinets at the end of the street so you technically don't have a route back to BT.
SSE rent the line off BT so a guy needs to come out and move the cabling back to the BT router inside the green box. If you are already with BT (or another company who rent off them) then the line test will go through fine and you can get the cashback.
