By far the cheapest price on 5th Gen Core i3 Laptop. Though it's refurb but it still has 1 year Argos warranty.

It's got Windows 10 preloaded so that means it cannot be older than October last year as Windows 10 laptops only arrived in Oct'15.

Being in the same industry myself, I can assure it is real crazy deal TBH. You hardly find refurbished Celeron boxes with 8GB 1TB let alone Core i3 around this price.

Have bought Argos refurbished laptops before and they are in excellent cosmetic condition.

Bargain!!!

That's the info from Ebay. In description from Argos it states 5th Gen i.e. "Intel Core i3 i3-5005u dual core processor".

Having said that, you can't feel any difference between 4th and 5th gen. in terms of performance / speed while using it.

Wise indeed. (y). I've bought about 12 refurb laptops from argos in last 3 years for myself n friends. It was all good.

Doesn't really matter if they're used as Argos return in Ebay is straight forward for replacement / refund.

Same specs in Brand New, you're generally looking around £300 - £329 mark.

I saw that, but this bothered me:

Manufacturer refurbished: An item that has been professionally restored to working order by a manufacturer-approved vendor. This means the product has been inspected, cleaned and repaired to meet manufacturer specifications and is in excellent condition. This item may or may not be in its original packaging. See the seller’s listing for full details.

Heat from me. The "refurbished" thing should be taken with a grain of salt with the Argos eBay Outlet in my experience. Very often they are simply "open box" unused returns or items that have been opened to show to a customer in store. An HP Chromebook I bought from them once was clearly brand new with a sealed box, even though it was supposed to be a refurb, so it's luck of the draw really.
farhanacram
23 Jun 16 1 #23
Indeed, usually they are customer returned units due to change of mind. The ones I bought were literally like new as well. Some even had keyboard / screen protection still intact.

Yet, I've added refurbished in title to make it clear.

23 Jun 16 #32
I doubt you're going to see a massive increase in performance between these two though... those benchmarks are based on the CPU itself. Neither of these laptops are gaming machines, so tell me how the Lenovo would perform better in every day tasks...

I preferred the Asus as it's a better known brand, nicer looking laptop, and overall, there will be a difference with it being £40 cheaper...
RiverDragon8

thanks that's what I was looking for! my asus t100 has 8 hour battery life but 10" screen and atom processor. so wondering what else is out there with good battery life but bigger screen. my other laptops' batteries tend to die after 2 hours
jameshothothot
23 Jun 16 1 #35
Review says 4h15 run time. guess depends on the test. this is 'web surfing'

Battery Runtime

Our real world Wi-Fi test simulates the load needed for opening websites. The "Balanced" profile is enabled, and the screen's brightness is set to approximately 150 cd/m². The IdeaPad achieves a runtime of 4:15 hours. This rate is not extraordinary, but it is acceptable in view of the price range.
superfreddy
23 Jun 16 1 #36

Thinking of replacing this HP I got last summer - http://www.tesco.com/direct/hp-pavilion-15-p264na-laptop-156-amd-a10-8gb-ram-1tb-silver/796-2991.prd

I've already compared processors and this one in the Lenovo is better. Other than that, I'm struggling to see how they stack up against each other in all areas. What I do know is I can't stand the trackpad and keyboard on my HP, the display and sound are poor and I've found using it pretty frustrating. I mainly use it for recording and producing music and video editing.

Any thoughts? This price is really tempting....

i3 is higher up the food chain than an atom. atom is better for battery though. i think the processor speeds were highlighted above 1900 vs 2800 ish? so i3 is almost 50pc faster. depends on programs. some can use multi core better than others. but a quad core atom should be worse than dual core i3 at intensive tasks.

How have you determined that the parts are lower quality when it was originally more expensive?

I do know for a fact it'll out perform the Asus. As do Intel who make both processors.

Whatever task you'd use it for this will respond quicker. Even if you only wanted to use the calculator application. Any time you wait on that one you'd wait less. It'll boot faster, start applications faster and generally smoother.

The integrated graphics is quite good, although would be better if the MB had two memory slots instead of one for dual memory speed. About the same level as an old Geforce 8800GS which was near top of the range about 8 years ago, so games before 2010 would work very well on highest settings.

superfreddy
23 Jun 16 #108
I'm not disagreeing with you, but you feel so strongly I should have gone for it over the Asus, that I'd like to know what performance differences I'd see between then both. Do you know what I'm going to use it for? Do you know for a fact it'll out perform the Asus on a massive scale on tasks it's only capable of coping with?

You don't seem to want to answer. And it's cheaper because the parts are lower quality.
RiverDragon8 to superfreddy
23 Jun 16 #117
Huh? i3 processor is better = faster = more powerful = better performance. You seriously don't know anything about computers if you don't know this. You paid £40 more an inferior laptop.
First thing you do when you buy a laptop is look at the processor. The mistake you made was to think quad core was better than dual core, from there on due to lack of knowledge you made one bad assumption after another.
mike33
23 Jun 16 #109

Dude this site is called HOT UK DEALS. So it's about saving money or getting the best for your money. I gave you the best advice you could have got on here at the time before this deal went oos. I told you the best thing for you to do is buy this laptop and return the Asus because your getting a better laptop + you would have also saved £40. Your way of thinking was that Asus brand is better than Lenovo (wrong) and that quad core is better than dual core (wrong again).
It doesn't matter what your using the Asus for, if this Lenovo laptop is better and cheaper as well (bonus) then your getting more for your money right? Your basically paying more for less and your in denial or not that clever or both.
superfreddy
23 Jun 16 #113
Basically, you can't answer my question.

Yeah great, a better CPU. Rubbish build quality, possibly no removable battery, 2.4ghz WiFi. Just because it has a better CPU doesn't mean it'll out perform the Asus with its slightly better processor. Yeah it's cheaper and has a better CPU on paper, but that doesn't mean it'll be a massive improvement over the Asus. That's what you're not understanding.

If there was half the ram in the Asus, I'd be agreeing with you, but they are both low end systems and neither of them are built for video editing and gaming, so you're best to look at build quality too.

Reading about the Lenovo, I'm relieved I didn't go for it now. Just because something is cheap, doesn't mean it's amazing.

23 Jun 16 #116
Again, you're not looking beyond a better CPU so let's just leave it there.
superfreddy
23 Jun 16 #118
Again, pure focus on the CPU. If the rest of the laptop is rubbish, then it's inferior.

Is the hard drive better performing? What's the ram speed?

If the hard drive in the Asus is better than the lenovo, I wouldn't say the overall product is better just based on one thing.
Pondlife
23 Jun 16 #119
No you aren't looking beyond the fact that you've bought the other one.

They both support the same ram speed, but yours is maxed at 8gb and this can go to 16gb.

If it suits you to pretend that yours has a vastly faster hard drive then yep it's practically an ssd, it whizzes along like it's setting new transfer speed limits.

You've given up on facts and are now resorting to hoping that parts are faster.
RiverDragon8

Mine arrived - using a 17.3 inch Dell Dimension with a 1920x1080 screen and this Lenovo's display seems pretty blocky on text compare to what I'm used to. My Dell has a similar processor (3rd gen i3) with similar size RAM and HD but I think the screen on this is too poor for me. It's glossy and I reckon the resolution on this is too low for a 15 inch screen unfortunately. My 11 inch Acer chromebook looks fine at this res, but I think 15'' is a screen size too far. Going to return it - wish it was 11 or 12" :disappointed:

Condition from Argos was excellent, box marked refurb but almost as new but sceen isn't workable for me, otherwise it would be a keeper.

Mine came couple of light scratches on the top. Internal speakers are awful, but its cheap enough for the daughter. Cant moan for the price.

My friend at work also received one of these. He said they might as well of not had speakers built in as they're quiet and it's like having a 99p pair of headphones plugged in with only one earpiece working. He also said the WiFi is dreadful if he goes in the garden with his laptop, so is tied to use it in the house. He also said the screen wasn't great and looked a bit washed out. He's already requested to send it back.

I received my Asus in which members said I was "an idiot" and "thick" for paying £40 more to get a laptop that didn't have the Lenovo's i3 CPU in... I'm over the moon with my ASUS. Once I got the bloatware off and clean installed Windows 10, it's quick and a pleasure to use. The laptop has 'sonicmaster' audio and sounds great for portability.

The battery has lasted me all day so far and I have 47% left after installing my software on and off all day. Screen is brilliant - watched HD trailers on Youtube and they load and play instantly. WiFi is 3 out of the 4 bars when in the garden well away from the router.

The laptop was also spotless and hadn't been used.

So yeah, I spent £40 more on a laptop with a lower spec CPU. But I got a solid working laptop that I'm pleased with. Just because it was more, doesn't mean the Lenovo was better value. People on here and my work friend reporting unhappiness with it - scratched, dreadful speakers, no charger. You get what you pay for.

It was also stated by one of these 'users' who acted childishly in their discussion, that why have Argos eBay sold 300+ units against the ASUS that had sold no where near that - the answer is probably that the Lenovo has been returned many more times by customers, meaning that Argos eBay have more available units to sell, over the ASUS that they don't have many returned meaning not many refurbs to sell.

Anyway, I just thought I'd state my opinion.

My laptop was delivered yesterday and opened today. Extremely pleased with it, it looks brand new as I cant see any marks on it whatsoever. Not gave it a full workout yet however internet browsing and watching videos feels seamless. Very happy with my purchase. thanks OP!

Received mine this morning. Absolutely mint condition so I'm really happy with it.

If anyone needs to make a Windows 10 USB installer, this guide works. I had issued until I formatted the USB stick as FAT32 rather than NTFS. https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Windows-10/Installing-Windows-10-through-an-USB-PEN/m-p/2087951/highlight/true#M345

As this item seems to be back in stock, can anyone who has got one confirm whether or not it has an HDMI port?

Yes it has an HDMI port, along with SD slot, ethernet, 1xUSB2 and 1xUSB3 port.

Returning mine as the screen has four pixels that are stuck. Besides that it was an immaculate unit.

Mine arrived the other day, a few light scratches on the lid but other than that it's fine. Installed Kaspersky and usual stuffs including Sims 4 which runs just fine with this even on the integrated graphics. Pretty good deal all in all if you ask me.

Like new, no marks etc

After activation updating etc (took a little time) on old hdd (so windows 10 remembers my activation info)
I then Upgraded/replaced slow 1tb with 256gb SSD and did a clean install with win10 which auto activated (old 1tb drive kept safe for day or two in case error)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3fYQu--I5Lk
boots in about 10 seconds

I am interested in upgrading the wifi to a dual band ac version, any advice on compatibility for lenovo? as the 'tuncs' use whitelists i beleive.

30 Jun 16 #157
Yeah I noticed that it wouldn't pick up the 5Ghz band on my Superhub, but considering this is for the daughter I don't see that being an issue, she doesn't do heavy downloading or file transfers.

Mine is good apart from a few light scratches on the top and one scratch on the bottom. Build quality is low so ok for around the house, I don't think it would survive long on its travels. Value for money wise worth a maximum of £200.
