chain-set and brake-set although Shimano, they are less then Ultegra, which is where some of the saving comes from otherwise would be more than a grand.

Not a smart question but what is wrong with a good old fashioned mountain bike with a few gears.
Seems like everyone is competing in the tour de France nowadays.
Are there any decent entry level bikes that you could recommend for around 200 pound.

If you aren't doing a lot of road biking then yes this is overkill. Decathlon's BTWin range is great value for money in terms of getting started. You can't do the miles on a mountain bike that you can a road bike.

Have a look on Decathlon for the Btwin Triban

It depends what you want to do. I have both and can assure you that mountain bikes may have loads of gears but they are still rubbish on roads, likewise, road bikes eat the miles with ease but you'd have no bike left after a short offroad session
If you want a cheap bike, the best I've seen of late is the Decathlon one at £150ish but this may not be available now (check this site or Decathlons). Other than that, go for ebay/gumtree as the main problem with Road bikes is that people watch the Tours and then get a road bike, then they realise that road bikes are hard work (if done right and not stopping every two seconds), can be painful (to start with, most saddles are!!) and it takes up lots of time, so they get rid, hence lots of bargains

I was happily (delighted, no problems whatsoever with the bike) riding my Norco Citadel 2003 tank with Schwalbe Marathons, a rack, some cobbled together mudguards. I got a Kaffenback 2 from Planetx and it really gave me a taste for cycling on the road. I have since made that into a bit of a tank as well (16.5kg if you can believe it), but taken it on the road with a more dedicated cycling friend on 100km and 100mile rides around Perthshire. It is just incredible.
The problem is, cycling is a fun way to spend vast sums of money, and you start to pretty quickly want to see what a light bike would feel like on the same hills.
I won't be buying one though. I could probably shave twice the weight of this bike off my a**e, thing that looks like an ar*e slightly above my a*se and my tummy, before even buying a lighter wheelset and tyres...

Good price, not my cup of tea but if you are looking for a cheap carbon bike with a good groupset then this is ideal.

Why are people talking about mountain bikes? This is a road bike deal and a good one at that.
Off road, buy a MTB.
On Road, buy a road bike/hybrid.

Nothing wrong with it, in fact, it's better as you don't have to carry around a really heavy bike lock for fear of having your expensive 'light' bike pinched.

hi, does this qualify for bike2work scheme.
AbuG
4 Jun 161#14
It should do but i am not certain.
I think alot of these bikes were pre-made for that purpose and sold just under the £1000, as thats the upper limit on the bike2work scheme.

Their page on the Cycle to Work Schemes suggests that this bike does not qualify unless you already have a voucher:
What can I buy with the scheme?
You can purchase all custom bikes which are built to order through our normal build queue and which are available on our website on the Cycle To Work Schemes. Pre-built bikes, Clearance bikes, and Daily Deal bikes are excluded from the scheme. It may be possible to buy these excluded bikes with a Cycle to Work voucher if you have the voucher in your immediate possession.

Currently the Btwin Triban 540 at £499 is an absolute bargain if your budget is sub £500, but if you have a bigger budget this Planet X bike is a steal for the spec supplied. I'd be surprised if there's anything comparable out there for the money.

Shame that it's missing the excellent 6800 brakes but it's still a great deal.

If you even cared to read the bloody thread, you would see that its because someone asked a question and their question was answered by three of us (who like to try and help others!!) in quick succession... no need to blow a fuse over it, not EVERYONE is a bike "expert"!
I doubt it will ride the same after all the abuse though! probably scrapped it

How would you guys say this ranks next to the Giant Defy 0? This looks like astonishing value for the money given what you get with it.

5 Jun 161#22
I haven't rode either but the Defy's reputation for its frame and it multiple awards/recommendations would put it ahead in my book.
Defy is ALUXX SL. Carbon doesn't necessarily mean better despite the marketing and snobbery hype.
An opinion from an expert or someone who's tried both would be more welcome

I have a hybrid at the moment and I'm tempted to get a road bike after being overtaken so many times by people who aren't actually pedalling faster than I am!
Which pedals should you get for it?
buddn07 to metallica182

Serious answer... The ones that match your shoes. Not all shoes have the same bolt holes to match the cleats. If you've already got some cleats, then you'll want pedals to match.

Thanks bud, I don't have cleats at the moment, I'm not that pro :stuck_out_tongue: I just wear trainers on my hybrid... the deal expires in 4 hours...decisions, decisions!!
