It does say this is a switch look -- "NETGEAR GS308-100UKS 8 Port Gigabit Ethernet 10/100/1000 Mbps Switch"

Thanks for the info but I do understand what the difference is.
I can't however see anything in the description to tell me that it is actually a switch and not a hub.

Why is this called a switch and not a hub?

Switches intelligently send out messages from one computer to another. Hubs were used a long time ago, and simply relayed a message from one computer to every computer, and they had to disregard it if it wasn't for them.

You can but they end up being quiet expensive like this one router
My Virgin media router and and net gear has been moved into the fusebox in the hallway. So the end bedroom and conservatory doesn't get good WiFi signal. So I was going to use one of the rj45 port to plug a WiFi router just to extend signal there which will also get me WiFi in the garden and the shed
It will also give me 3 more ports if I need it.

Me and my friend lifted up floorboards and channelled the cables under there to each rooms. Then channeled the walls to fit some wall sockets. In the office room i put a 4 port socket on the floor. The difficult part was getting the cables upstairs but we somehow managed. Can't do anymore wiring as the laminates are down and furniture are on them which includes fitted ikea wardrobes.

So if I connect 1 port to my router then the other 7 ports can be connected to computers?

Yes, and/or to any other devices that have 10/100/1000 Ethernet ports - ie to enable them to talk to each other and/or to the router (and Internet beyond).
Incidentally I have one of these from years back Lightning deal. As mentioned it's not a very ergonomic design having power in on the back but Ethernetcables in on the front, where the port activity LEDs are incredibly bright (and there's no LED indication as to the port's line speed eg 10/100 v 1000 as in some designs - ie no feedback that you are actually getting the 'gigabit' speed you've paid for). So I have fitted a 'hood' on mine that stops the bright LEDs being a nuisance.

i setup networking for the house with one of these 2 years ago. working great. wish I got a 16 or 24 port one and ran more cables to each room though before putting laminates down

Got this delivered next day off ebay. For about £16. Was cheaper this way for me because I don't have prime.

Nope, though have two gs308's in the cupboard from the past, next best thing. ;-)
How do you get the 30 day trial? Only thing I can see is a sign up to the 70 odd quid deal. I've had the trial once before (a year or more ago), perhaps that's why I don't see it...?

It's so useful but I've had to hide it behind my entertainment unit, front facing ethernet ports make me a saaaad panda.

The white ones you see cheaper often and the 5 port ones

This has been this price for a third of the last 18 months. it's a good price, but you I can stick my neck out and say it will be this price some time next week too. I might wait until they don't have it at their normal or extortionately high 'we only put it at this price to make the deal seem amazing' price.
