What does re-certified mean? That they have hidden all of the bad sectors?

I would think that these are returns where somebody has bought it opened it and not got it to work properly, been incompatible or just didnt like the shape. They {wd} get them them back retest it and find it works properly. I doubt that there is any value in them "repairing" them, even if they could do it. I have one hanging out the back of the telly, and its used frequently no problems but, of course, YmmV.

No. Means it broke the last time somebody had so they fiddle with it to make it work then sell it to you with shorter warranty
I have 1 of these for my Xbox One. They are definitely worth buying and saving £15. Most of them are just surplus stock. My guess is a couple of years old and they have to be QA tested again. I think the argument of only a 6 month warranty is valid to a point. However look at it from WD's point of a view. Buy a recertified drive with a 2 year warranty for £30 or buy a new drive for £45 with a 2 year warranty?

Basically, yes, but they will have used additional spare areas that only they as a manufacturer can see.

Pretty sure these are no good, the USB is hard wired - you need Samsung/Seagate portable drives.

Bought last month and it didnt work. Opening a return was a mission as well. Did get a replacement and it was new and sealed, though. Suppose its worth the gamble...

Yep. Manufacturer recertified is virtually 'as good as new' IMO. But why give it only 6 months warranty WD? If WD were really confident they'd back this up with a fully warranty. I'm only as confident as they are.

Good find thanks, ordered. It's only 1TB so not really big enough as a 'main backup' drive; but great for 'normal' portable use. If it does fail I can just recover from my main system. Heated.

avoid if you want the performance as stated, often they drop speed on these drives over USB 3, that is to say they often are slower, than expected USB 3 speed for a fully working version of this/these drives.

I never quite understand why WD have so many recertified drives (no other manufacturer does this) however I've 3 or 4 of these external USB3 2.5" drives over a period of about 4 years and they've been fine so far. YMMV. It says it all here

Not sure how much I would trust a 'recertified' hard drive...
