Good deal OP, and heated. This is a flagship at a budget price, guaranteed Andoid updates for three years and absolutely no crappiola on the stock UI seals it for me. Weird omission of NFC with the upcoming Android Pay.

Well, Might be massive for you, but you will never know other people need. People who are traveling a lot will need a larger screen to replace their tab. Thus no need to take both of them when in the move or abroad.
Keep in mind the smart phone nowadays is not just for calling, but for browsing, navigation while on the move, walking on the street, text chatting. When you are in such situation you even need a still larger screen than 5.5" as long as you could still grab it with one hand.

13 Jun 162#60
I bought the 32GB version for my 2nd gen 8GB Moto G.
I ended up buying the new Moto G4 largely because even with this I had problems. Even when I formatted the card as internal storage the phone's memory constantly said it was full. I also had problems because it wouldn't charge. My new Moto G4 came with a mains charger and my old Moto G has charged on it without any problems and the battery has lasted a lot longer than it was doing.
captainbeaky
13 Jun 16#61
John Lewis give you a generous 90 days to return goods for a refund. As long as you haven't trashed it you shouldn't have any problems - especially if you buy it online.
I just spoke to them over the phone regarding a refund and they said if you put a sim in and turn on the phone, it is considered used, and they won't take it back. How they know you have done this i don't know, but thats what he said, so be careful.

cullies
13 Jun 161#67
An SD card is no substitute for installed internal memory. Android 6 boasts that it treats Sd storage as internal memory. It does, BUT not for the majority of apps which need the internal storage proper.
If you run many apps? Buy the 32GB version

Badongkadong
13 Jun 161#70
Indeed, the eMMC or UFS for top range phones, are many fold faster and more reliable than a removable SD card so it's a false premise to say that the external storage will be equivalent as it isn't; for movies, music and photos it's OK but not many large apps can be easily moved to sd.

I would not recommend buying a phone from Tesco. If you have an issue with the phone and are even just 1 day over the 30 days initial return period, you will find yourself having to go through a return to base repair scenario. You could be without your phone for up to 2 weeks.

16 Jun 162#110
+1 for single sim. (Black, simfree, from Tesco)
+1 for the best value phone I've ever bought.
Absolutely no bloatware. Infact theres no music player (except the Google music one), no independant email client other than Gmail, no gallery app for viewing pics, and not even a web browser installed.
Thats exactly how I want my phones, empty so I can choose all my own apps, not sure if this will be a bad point for some people though who like to just use the ones that are usually on the device.
With what you get on this phone I find it hard to justify spending £400+ on a phone considering how little extra you get for that money...
chancooluk
16 Jun 16#111
I'm not sure why there is no Gallery or Browser installed on yours. Google Photos, and Google Chrome were pre-installed on the G4 I'm using (unless you mean in addition to those).
I'm not quite so positive about the G4. The fit and finish on mine is a bit wonky (camera surround is more raised at the bottom, dual-tone flash is skewed, back cover does not fit correctly). The screen is big and bright but mine has really ugly light bleed across the entire bottom edge and the top corners. The main camera is also really underwhelming, considering some of the tech sites have said that its a massive improvement over the Moto G 3rd. I've found it to produce almost identical images to the 3rd, but it struggles in high contrast situations (resulting in blown out skies and no colour in dark areas) more than the 3rd does, and the HDR mode has been toned down so much that it hardly changes the images at all.
These issues are all ok though when you consider the price. It's going to be a bit rough around the edges. I won't be keeping it though cause I can't hold it in one hand without feeling like I'm about to drop it on the floor... It's just too big.
gwapenut
16 Jun 16#112
Did you buy yours from John Lewis or motomaker?
merlin6r
16 Jun 16#113
Yeah I meant in addition to stuff in the Google pack. I don't really like Google Photos as a browser and usually use the default gallery app on android phones. And yes you're right I did have chrome installed as well, but not the bog standard browser that is just usually called 'web' or 'internet'.

Ok I have a Moto g waiting to be collected ,,, I am going to take it back to Australia next week , So the JL warranty would be hard to use.
The main reason i bought it was I need dual sim 4g + 3g on standby as the 2g network in Australia is being turned off in December.
I am not a heavy user , but I do use my phone as a satnav and the moto g is supposed to get hot and lag when charging or using the camera , I normally charge my phone when driving .
If anyone who is using the G4 please let me know what you think of it .

I went on a 2 hour drive yesterday using waze my G4.. All 2 hours its connected to car charger and was fine. Worked perfectly. It got quiet hot but didn't got slow or unresponsive. But at few places When I stopped can clearly see the difference of not having compass on the phone. I had a nexus 6 before and regret coming to G4. Nexus 6 was perfect in every way other than no sd card slot and huge screen.

If you run many apps? Buy the 32GB version

I would rather pay extra for John Lewis's service any day.
Why would you ever pay £20 more for a locked phone?:smirk:
Can anyone else who's bought the black one from JL confirm that it also is dual sim?
On moto chat they claim it can , bit it seems odd no other phone manufacturer can manage to do it using the
same processor and chipset ..
Waterproof now.
The water proofing must have being adding extra bulk, so dispensed with?
Asked the salesperson if it was dual sim. They couldn't find any information to confirm or deny.
Just opened up the box sadly it's single sim.
Microsd card slot and a micro SIM card only
Will be returning it for a full refund.
Product detail:
Motorola XT1662 RETAIL BLK MOTOG GB Retail 16GB SS
I'm guessing DS probably is the dual sim variant, wonder if any one who has the dual sim version could check the description on the box.
Model: SM4360AE7
So it sounds like there are several batches into John Lewis and not all are dual sim
I'd thought that maybe buying a white one might guarantee dual sim, but I'm not convinced now. I'd be loading up a gift card to get 5% off so I can't afford to take a chance and get a refund, I don't buy enough from there.
On the Moto forum they say there are 3 models G4 play 16gb single sim ,, G4 16gb dual sim G4+ 32gb dual sim.
They also confirmed on Moto G sales chat that when one sim is on 4g the 2nd sim reverts to 3g .. this I need to see to believe as no other manufacturer has done this with the snapdragon 616 processor ....
I can confirm that it connects to Vodafone 4G and Three 3G at the same time, although you can only use data on one at a time, as you'd expect.
Hope that helps!
Mine is dual sim and on the box it says:
MOTOROLA,XT1622,RETAIL,WHT,Moto G, GB, 16GB, DS
+1 for the best value phone I've ever bought.
Absolutely no bloatware. Infact theres no music player (except the Google music one), no independant email client other than Gmail, no gallery app for viewing pics, and not even a web browser installed.
Thats exactly how I want my phones, empty so I can choose all my own apps, not sure if this will be a bad point for some people though who like to just use the ones that are usually on the device.
With what you get on this phone I find it hard to justify spending £400+ on a phone considering how little extra you get for that money...
Thanks for the reply
total ****
I hope it will be dual sim , otherwise I will leave it unopened and send it back ...
I wish I had done a bit more research before I ordered one !!!
It looks like it gets hot while charging as well , which wont be much use when using as a satnav while charging in the car ..
Lovely phones, much better and faster that our previous phones (moto 4g 1st Gen)
I can also confirm that they are dual sim.
