From the video review above, seems the M8S II doesn't have root access (surprising) mentioned at 8:00, Redskull also mentions the wi-fi issues are still evident at 8:20.
At 11:55 trying to play a 4K HEVC 59fps file, not great! His Samsung S7-recorded 4K file plays, as does the H265 file. The 10 bits 1080p file plays but the sound cuts out.

Try dloading a 4k file and playing that through kodi via usb. Should answer your question.
Look forward to hearing your thoughts @Cov, my only concern before I pull the trigger is the wifi, my router is in one room and box will be going in another, not that far about 20 feet but a couple of corners to get the signal round.
I had the M8 and and wifi would max out at just 8mb when sitting next to the router seems as if this one uses the same chipset so streaming a 4k file via the wifi would be a no go I would imagine?!
If anyone could share there experiences with the wifi tht would be very useful.

I have the same one linked up to one of my TVs - The WiFi syncs up at around 8mb - Nothing wrong with it, it is just poor by todays standards. Compared to to the main box I have (Acer Chromebox) which has wireless N, that one syncs up at about 120mb. The Acer box did cost £220 compared to the £24 I paid for the M8S box though!
Seems as I have 300mb broadband, my bottle neck is the wifi speeds (PCs are cabled!). For the general user these cheap boxes are going to be fine if your WAP is in the same room as your box.
Has anyone got openELEC running smoothly on these boxes yet?

I had HDMI output issues with the M8S (The Beelink was fine). I wouldn't sell anything if I had problems with it to someone else.
I had the older M8S box about 2.5 months now. I now have HDMI / Video issues. The box was working fine. Then suddenly I wasn't getting any display even though box was powered up.
I have a Panasonic Viera (couple years old) with 3 HDMI ouputs no display on any HDMI ports.
I have a the latest Hisense 4 HDMI ports only HDMI one gives a display.
If u google it it's a known problem with HDMI ports.

The next gen of boxes with HDR, HDMI 2.0a and support for all the latest technologies are due in the next couple of months, so I'm waiting to see what the likes of the new Hisilicon SOC does.
These boxes are quite cheap though, so you could jump in now and buy one to get an idea of the experience.
AndyRoyd
3 Jul 16#77
TBH, it will likely be an exceptionally long time (if ever) to find any beneficial improvement at this £28 pricepoint. Not aware of any other options becoming available in short term. It's £28, it's the latest SoC. If you want the previous gen, that is also about £28 for comparable RAM, storage and features bar the VP9. HTH.

3 Jul 16#74
Yes, that is a fair point.
Openelec/Librelec is becoming more popular and may well become a default install on cheaper boxes in time.
They do still rely on Kodi in the background though, so that has to be born in mind too.

2 Jul 161#72
A difficult one in the Android arena, as Kodi and it's forks can still be full of issues.
It also depends on what hardware requirements you have.
At the moment I mainly use Windows mini pc's, which are more expensive but for what they do, they just work out of the box.
So far less potential messing around to get them to work.
You do miss out on some features such as support for the latest dolby audio standards and no native full 4k, so it's a case of weighing everything up.
I'm skipping these current generations of available SOC because I think that they will all be short lived with some far more exciting ones around the corner.
Rockchip are also creating their own custom fork of Kodi, so if they manage to get that right then it puts boxes based around their SOC's back on the map for the masses.

reddit
2 Jul 16#68
Yes but you may have to use an app such as market helper or modify the build prop, both methods of which will require root.
Most of these will come out of the factories with potential compatibility problems because they are not officially Google certified, so a Custom rooted ROM usually does the trick once a dev has his/her hands on one.

This is a really good price for what it is, but I personally will wait for Xiaomi to release their Mi Box. This is very imminent, and runs pretty much identical hardware based on the Amlogic S905X platform with 2GB RAM. Unlike these generic boxes however, Xiami is developing this box in collaboration with Google which means the Android 6.0 implementation will be ace. Xiaomi previewed this box at the recent Google I/O and it does look quite spiffy. I have a hunch it will be preapproved by Netflix to run Netflix in HD and 4K as well (do remember the above box as well as all other generic boxes will only run Netflix in 480p no matter which package you're on, Netflix will deliver HD+ streams only to devices on their pre-approved list such as Roku, Amazon Fire etc.)
That's good info. What would you recommend to buy instead?

The basic hardware is good but the ROM will be lousy out of the box as they always are.
Don't expect Kodi to work that well for more advanced functionality.
Also bear in mind that Kodi is dropping AMLogic Android support so you will need to rely on forks for full functionality.

There isn't even Netflix HD support no matter what package you're on. Netflix delivers an HD stream only to a list of preapproved devices broadly falling into 7 categories. Any other device gets a 480p stream.

You're commenting on an Android thread, not Windows.
Most Android media players have 1GB of RAM. The more expensive ones have 2GB. The NVIDIA Shield has 3GB of RAM but you pay more than £100 extra for the privilege (and of course, it's probably a tad more optimised software-wise though the Nvidia Tegra X1 chipset is well know for its own set of compatibility issues)
This is a stonking price for what it is, with Marshmallow and the 2GB of RAM. I only hope the WiFi issues with the original box have been ironed out in this version. I have that and apart from the WiFi and no HD on Netflix (common to all generic boxes), it still works perfectly.

Seems a great price for the latest variant, although obviously reasonably unproven as yet. Anybody seen any other S905X options yet? Thanks.

Fair enough lol, but come on who is going to pay £150 or £30.
Nvidia shield is maybe worth it if you have an HDR 4k tv, although it seems this box does HDR too?

With the new S905x chip, can someone clarify what this can playback that the the beelink mini mx iii (or other S905 boxes) can't? I did read the description but can someone just reclarify please

Depends what you are after doing with it? 2GB is more than enough for streaming in kodi. Main problem with these boxes is after sales support and firmware updates, there are some openelec builds out there for the 905 and hopefully libreelec soon. But they are unofficial.

I have a Beelink MiniMXIII (got it for just under £25 a month ago) - was thinking the same after reading the earlier Mini M8S thread! Probably best waiting for reviews to appear.
Code GBM8SII takes it to £28.53 (UK Plug). Ships after July 15.

Removed Android?
There is a Chinese based guy selling them on ebay for like £30 and a few pennies, at that price don't risk gearbest and we can all laugh at the punters buying Intel compute sticks and trying to run Kodi from Windoze
Edit: Soz correction the box you want is a Beelink Mini MXIII, here you goes http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/121971026711
I am thinking of getting a memory card can I run kodi addons on it instead of installing to the internal memory.

I realise reddit has mentioned this link already, but worth highlighting for anyone unsure about the Wi-Fi on this box.
Cnx say that Part 2 of the Review will appear "next month".
My box arrived several days ago.
It boots very quickly
The box was updated immediately - Android
Deffo WIFI issues, I haven't updated the firmware
I have ran Paradox no problems
Also have ran a 4K movie via Kodi - Mad Max
But I haven't watched a full movie.
I don't have a sd card can I update using usb
So anyone else had problems where after box been off a while it won't show picture on screen on power up unless I unplug and plug in again the power
If so, you need to update the firmware as the one it ships with has issues with Wifi.
My box is working fine after the update.

May not be the box for me as I will be using the wifi. Gona have another look at the T95N, lets see what the wifi reports are like on those.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=olq3_We5tqQ
From the video review above, seems the M8S II doesn't have root access (surprising) mentioned at 8:00, Redskull also mentions the wi-fi issues are still evident at 8:20.
At 11:55 trying to play a 4K HEVC 59fps file, not great! His Samsung S7-recorded 4K file plays, as does the H265 file. The 10 bits 1080p file plays but the sound cuts out.
Also, do you recommend using the Google account I already have, or creating a new one? I have lots of apps I would like to use on the box, that I don't have space for on me old smart phone..

Seems as I have 300mb broadband, my bottle neck is the wifi speeds (PCs are cabled!). For the general user these cheap boxes are going to be fine if your WAP is in the same room as your box.
Has anyone got openELEC running smoothly on these boxes yet?
I had the older M8S box about 2.5 months now. I now have HDMI / Video issues. The box was working fine. Then suddenly I wasn't getting any display even though box was powered up.
I have a Panasonic Viera (couple years old) with 3 HDMI ouputs no display on any HDMI ports.
I have a the latest Hisense 4 HDMI ports only HDMI one gives a display.
If u google it it's a known problem with HDMI ports.

My biggest worry is if I have issues with this mini M8S box I'm going to have to pay a fair amount to return.
Buying it on ebay is double the price!!

I'm returning that box - ebay return!!
So do I splash out on this one???
These boxes are quite cheap though, so you could jump in now and buy one to get an idea of the experience.
Are there other things around this price mark due out?
Openelec/Librelec is becoming more popular and may well become a default install on cheaper boxes in time.
They do still rely on Kodi in the background though, so that has to be born in mind too.
Most of these will come out of the factories with potential compatibility problems because they are not officially Google certified, so a Custom rooted ROM usually does the trick once a dev has his/her hands on one.

Don't expect Kodi to work that well for more advanced functionality.
Also bear in mind that Kodi is dropping AMLogic Android support so you will need to rely on forks for full functionality.

anyway, any decent IPTV boxes?
Cheers!
The Beelink sounded more appealing as it gets OTA updates, and they make OEM boxes (that's what I've read, anyway).
Isn't the Beelink MiniMXIII better than this one considering it has a 1000Mbit LAN port + 16GB eMMC for £31? genuine question, not trying to be smart.
EDIT: I just realised that this box has Android 6 as opposed to 5.1 on the MiniMXIII
I have had it for about 6 months and no issues with WiFi or any other problemse. Works fine. I have used it to watch football and apart from few occasions I have had no buffer issues either. I have the normal broadband not fibre.
