They have white ones for £11 but the piano black ones are £3! A cracking deal and great for a bit of piece of mind around the home especially if you use E Cigs! £8.79 on Amazon.

That's not how an RCD works!!
An RCD basically monitors the current flow out on the phase line and the return current flow in the neutral, any imbalance of these and the circuit is tripped!
I have a couple of these and the usb power output is unfortunately low. Will take a while to charge a phone compared to a 1ma charger

I think you are confusing surge protection with RCD protection.
Surge protects from voltage spikes travelling into devices.
RCD switches the device of if the Current draw spikes suddenly, in the case of dodgy E.Cigs.
