Spot on, 120gb will eventually disappear like the 64gb ssd did and then people will start attacking folk for why their are ordering the 240gb when the 512gb is better value per GB.

How many of these do they have in stock? Are people not ordering due to the '120gb is too small you must be stupid' brigade? Just ordered 4 and have a previous 120gb so in your face.

3 are/will be running on their own for mainly browsing and 2 will be running along side a larger hdd which will store all the data.

No manufacturer is going to price a 120GB for less than half the price of their 240GB because that makes absolutely no sense whatsoever, you need to re-evaluate your expectations. A 240GB drive isn't better value to somebody who is only going to use 80-90GB of it, which applies to a huge percentage of users.
miaomiaobaubau
19 Jun 16 #73
wrong, the bigger sizes are more popular and much better value. I would expect the smaller to be cheaper proportionally
Ashe

A 240GB drive is not more than twice as useful as a 120GB, considering most non-techy people won't need it. A 120GB will not be priced at less than half the price of a 240GB drive.
miaomiaobaubau
18 Jun 16 #71
would expect to pay no more than £15-18 if the 240gb can be found for less than £40 from time to time which make a lot more sense for now days usage. At £15 the very most this would be the ideal for me to test MB's

What are you doing with it to be running that much CPU constantly?

Surely you're either using the wrong machine for your requirements or theres stuff running that shouldnt be?

12 Jun 16 #68
Yep, I put a SanDisk Ultra in my old netbook (SATA2) which used to sit with the HDD bottlenecking at 100%. The SSD speeds it up a bit, but now it sits there with the CPU (mine is a single core AMD) at 100% instead as it's now the slowest component, even with 2GB RAM.
Don't get me wrong, it has transformed the netbook and made it usable again, but not as much as I'd hoped.

Cloned my drive yesterday using Acronis 2016. Whole process took about 45 mins and now the system boots up from cold to Windows desktop in around 15 seconds. This is well worth doing to a laptop, it transforms it.

Also to add, the SSD comes with a bracket that gives the SSD more depth when it's in the HDD caddy so it can't move about.

Cloned my HDD using EaseUS Todo Backup (free) last night; popped out the HDD this morning for this SSD and booted up in <10 seconds. Super impressed.

No, free. Their site says allow 21 days before reporting missing. So I did, it didn't turn up. But their customer services was very helpful when I contacted them through a chat session on their website. They offered replacements or a refund. I took the refund and it was all done in a few minutes.

Im running Win10 and Office 365 on two laptops with this drive and a desktop with this as the primary drive.

No issues at all. Probably have 50GB free on the two laptops.

Everything i am concerned about i store on OneDrive anyway.

So, no its not too small. Might be if you have large data volume requirements, but for general use its a gift.

The debate continues lol.

My thinking was that I could get two of these for the same price as the poorer Sandisk 240GB and have better performance between the two drives or RAID them up once 120GB becomes completely obsolete.

I do think these drives have better performance than Sandisk 120GB and 240GB drives.

Cheap way of adding some more space for a gaming PC, I have a 250GB SSD as OS drive but I'm always wary of filling it up too much with larger games. This 120GB SSD would be good for the likes of GTA5, which with patches etc is around 55-60GB.

Try re-running the benchmark and notice how variable they are. That benchmark is pretty much worthless IMO. I have been trying several versions and each time I get very varying results. Seq read 399MB/s to 754MB/s, 553MB/s on another run. Write 360 to 802MB/s with a 560MB/s The other results are equally as variable 4K-64thrd 1070MB/s to 3499MB/s with a 1536MB/s. These are for a Samsung 850 EVO and not this drive!

BTW there is a newer version of AS SSD Bench. I just d/l'd 1.9 because I only had 1.7.

This drive is too small IMO I would rather wait for a 240GB than waste money on this. I need another SSD for this PC when I migrate my Samsung to my main PC after it is fixed. 120GB is just too tight a fit even with no big installs.

I've been using one of these for about a month now just for OS bootup and a few regular used pieces of software, for the price it's been worthwhile so far. I would suggest backing up important work to a HDD too though just in case.
littlewhitebull456
7 Jun 16 #55
Depends on what you want to do with it.

A clean install with 64 bit Windows 8.1 and office 2016 installed and a smattering of video players used as a work/viewer PC boots up in 30 secs or less with a 120Gb drive uses up just under 40% of space.

Of course you need another drive with a 500Gb minimum to store the actual work and movies etc on.

If you do stick with a single C drive you are putting all your eggs in one basket so to speak.

But each to their own.

Exactly!

My new tosh p300 2tb can hit 200MB/s r/w which trashes the the v300s for instance but that v300 will boot up faster not because of the raw r/w but because hdds can not match the iops of any ssd !!!!!!!

Mixed r/w iops is where its at ...

You are making the mistake of assuming that the rest of the world has requirements identical to yours.

I've two of these installed as primary O/S drives in PCs with big HDDs as secondary drives

I've another in an old laptop that i used for surfing and a bit of word processing. Perfect for it. I also share storage & files across them all via OneDrive.

I agree it is too small for a main PC. My main PC is a laptop with only one drive bay. The data on it runs at about 700 GB and increasing all the time. The above SSD is pretty useless to me. But it will be useful to people with multiple drive bays, less data, casual users, secondary PCs.

Great for turbocharging an old laptop. The old laptops in my house are unfortunately far too old to understand SATA. To be upgradeable to SSD, a system needs to be younger than about 7 years.

Thanks, but my concern is the transfer of the operating system from the old disk to the SSD
kvee
7 Jun 16 #47
If you are going to change out the hard drive of a netbook and put in an SSD drive then an Acer netbook is far less involved as you can open a panel underneath the netbook to remove the drive. An ASUS netbook is not so easy as you have to remove the keyboard and the touchpad panel, then remove ribbons to finally get at the hard drive. You will probably also find that an older netbook is SATA 2 rather than SATA 3. A SATA 3 drive will fit a SATA 2 netbook but you wont get SATA 3 transfer speeds. Whilst SATA 2 speeds are faster than a mechanical drive, Netbooks are still slowed down by the Atom processor most are fitted with. You get faster boot up, shut down and app opening with SSD.

The original was mine - it was done on newly installed Win10. Used the latest version of AS SSD and these are the results:

After optimising(trim) in Win10:

http://i.imgur.com/xmfGL6I.png

I've since bought another one and installed in a slower PC (J1900) vs this Xeon E3-1230v2 powered one and these are the results:

http://i.imgur.com/qnoShLM.png

http://i.imgur.com/mt3gkZ3.png

Poorer performance compared to above but I think it has to do with my motherboard not fully reaching SATA3 speeds for some reason, installed a different SSD (Kingston) and this was the result:

I've got a feeling that it's plugged into SATA port 2 but not sure that it should matter since all the ports are 6Gb.

Read access time of 0.2 still has me concerned as well, 4 times higher than someone else supposedly got.

Could really do with someone else posting AS SSD benchmarks.

Yeah it's a MSI 990FXA-GD65 AM3+ ---- https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/990FXA-GD65.html#hero-overview

On the debate about 120GB, remember you should keep at least 15% of the drive free as the performance drops when the cells fill up.

Personally I've got Windows 7, Fallout 4 and Alien Isolation and I'm down to the 15% left.

What about speeds? AS SSD is producing these results. What's everyone think? I'm absolutely nowhere near the "WRITE 420MB/s" speed.

First one was without using AHCI, second one with Microsoft AHCI driver (but I still think something isn't right...especially read access time), third one is with AMD SATA driver/controller.

I'm still researching but I'm on Windows 7 so maybe I'm losing performance. Any thoughts as to why my access read time would be so high?

Anyone tried using the Intel driver (iaStor)?

It would be real handy if someone else (or everyone) could post screenshots of AS SSD results.

Stop comparing SSDs using old HDD_like sequential R/W speeds  It's all about IOPS.

Bought one for my bro's new gaming PC. 120gb is more than plenty for OS and one or two games he will be playing. Don't see why you need a huge ssd for all your games, just have the games you play installed and when you change delete them or move them to a HDD.

'like £20 more' is 83% more. If it was 'like £20 more' on a product that cost £1000 then you would have a point but this is £24.

120gb is great as a starter drive to put your OS, a few small games, office etc on.

6 Jun 16 #20

Yes this should be possible. Most netbooks take 2.5" disks, not 1.8" disks. Some really old ones didn't take 2.5" disks. The problem can be gaining access. While some have trap doors at bottom, others have the disk under the keyboard or the worst kind you must take off the palmrest. One acer netbook I fixed went to the college of stupid design and had a trap door, but it could only be opened by releasing it from under the keyboard.

Examples of how to swap - as mentioned check model:

no it's not... after OS install you are left with about 90gb of real space.. 1 large game installion is like 45-50gb these days already.. If you got to download that game and install it after that you can't even do it with this ssd
240gb however is just perfect and can be had for like what £15-£20 more?
Don't skimp on this you will regret later on...

Hot, but I don't have much trust in the Integral brand, I have two 85MB read / 95MB write SD cards and they intermittently have write errors. I'd personally only use an Integral SSD as an OS drive without any important data.

Nonsense.

This SSD is a brilliant cheap-as-chips upgrade for an older PC, where it can be used for the OS and apps while retaining the original HDD for bulk storage. 120GB is plenty for this usage scenario.
