Dont think you can get many 30 metre water resistant analogue quartz watches with a swiss movement for less than a tenner. Perhaps you should sack the idea of a watch and get a cheap Chinese cuckoo clock as you are clearly living in cloud cuckoo land!

Boss watches are made by Oldest Swiss watch maker Movado. As most luxury brands would be stamped if they don't make themselves but with Brand like Boss never on rubbish quality. Not to mention exclusive Boss designs!!

As oppose to spending hundreds + on a watch due to its name in watch making? Same boat really? They may keep time very accurately, but where's the real life use in that anyway for most people?

I don't get why anyone would want to by a quartz watch at £62?

So many cheaper (maybe better) options available - Seiko, Casio, Citizen maybe .... a wiser choice would be to add £62 and buy an Eco Drive Citizen ...... £62 is just a couple hours work after all - why burden yourself with cheap tat just because it has a 'name' on it ..... a perfume name too!!

Sorry, cold from me .....

30 metres? Hmmmmm like to see that tested or to see the test results! ..... anyway, even if it is (unlikely) it won't be after the battery is replaced in Superdrug by the Saturday girl (nothing wrong with Saturday girls by the way!)

And as for Swiss movement ...... it's QUARTZ for heavens sake - please, don't imagine that there is an 80 year old Swiss Watchmaker lovingly assembling and hand cutting the gears for this ......... the electrics are brought in from China and the hands placed on the dial in a factory in Switzerland.

Quality aside, like most fashion related things, if you like the look of this watch, it's a decent enough disposable price.
£62 isn't really a lot to pay for a watch, relatively speaking...

I have a Citizen Eco Drive, paid a lot less than you are suggesting for it BTW. My wife has a Casio Waveceptor, I replaced the battery and back seal myself when the solar recharged battery eventually gave up.

Still don't get your Japanese Watch snobbery and I'm sure China had a hand in some of the brands you quote.

This watch is worth more than 'under a tenner' probably cost more than that to replace the leather strap for a nice one. For me its a nice looking dress watch and not an extravagant waste of money at that price tag. The specs and guarantee below (from Alexanders Jewellers) put it way above a Chinese tat under a tenner watch and its aesthetically more pleasing than your average Casio, Seiko or Citizen in that price range. I'm sure many people will see this watch as great value, perhaps because their priorities are not aligned with yours and perhaps they're looking for something other than just a Japanese workhorse. Do you have a Subaru Forester BTW?

Watch Movement: Quartz Analogue. Dial Colour: Silver. Crystal/Glass Type: Mineral Crystal Glass. Case Material : Steel. Case Width (Approx): 43mm. Case Depth (Approx): 10mm. Strap/Bracelet Type: Leather Strap. Clasp Type: Traditional Buckle. Water Resistance Depth: 30 metresAll our products come with a 2 year Manufacturers guarantee. All Hugo Boss watches come in the Hugo Boss Packaging.

Your absolutely right and if this anonymous person on a watch forum is correct we're all being fooled to one extent or another.

"Here is something that will come as a shock. I have represented some of the finest Swiss brand names in Japan. This places me in frequent contact with Customs and makes me quite knowledgeable about Japanese tariffs and country of origin branding laws. According to Japanese law, a watch which is manufactured overseas in a Japanese owned (or contracted) factory to Japanese quality control standards under Japanese supervision by a Japanese owned firm may be labeled "Made in Japan". "This is why Japan, with a population of 120 million, imports about 90 million watches a year, not because Japanese buy a new watch every year. They're for re-export. Statistics show that the average person buys a new watch somewhere around every five to seven years. Given this figure, Japan's internal watch demand would be somewhere between 17 to 24 million watches a year. Swiss watches represent only about 2 million pieces of the approximately 90 million pieces imported yearly. Chinese exports are around or even below this same figure. The rest of the approximately 85 million pieces imported are for re-export. They are made by Japanese companies overseas, and Japanese law allows them to be branded "made in Japan". this is entrepot trade." "Lest this seems too surprising, a number of companies in France, Germany and Italy also have the right to label their watches "Made in Switzerland" under certain circumstances, and I believe that under some circumstances, watches made in the US Virgin islands and that re enter Europe (The US Virgin islands have a customs union with Denmark, hence with the EEC) may also be labeled "Swiss made." "Japanese price levels for everything, be it the price of housing, food, moveis or wrist watches are Swiss levels. In Switzerland (and the USA too, for that matter) it's just not possible economically to mass produce inexpensive wrist watches. There are some special exceptions, such as Swatch, but it essentially has no competitors in Switzerland. Japan is in the same situation. The price of everything here makes the production of inexpensive mechanical watches prohibitive, and such production as there is remains limited to highly exclusive, quite pricey prestige pieces that are well beyond most people's pocket books--just like most Swiss watches."
From here: http://forums.watchuseek.com

nhoj, thank you for that super quote. honestly, i've kept one eye on this thread and was waiting for someone tgeek i am i correlated in google maps, and several interior production line pictures including robot part pickers and human-supervised hand alignment. so this makes me thin

Re: Japanese movement question....

Regarding use of the "Swiss Made" mark: http://www.fhs.ch/en/swissm.php I won't quote the whole thing here, but basically a percentage of the parts must be Swiss and the movement must be cased and inspected in Switzerland in order for a timepiece to be legally marked "Swiss Made".

Casio certainly manufactures in Japan. But yes, from a consumer's point of view, it doesn't matter whether they do or not.

I think srp111 is right. most of these fashion brands selling watches are nothing but branders, putting the name on it. The quality of the time piece has nothing to do with the quality of their clothes etc. on the contrary very misleading.

Citizen, Seiko are always safer bets imo.

You are paying for the name I have an Armani watch bought as s present. Battery died so I opened it up and I was shocked at the cheapness inside. A friend who worked at a watch repair shop laughed when I told him. He said most of the fashion label watch brands are like that. He did recommend to me a Tissot as it's got the Tag parts. I did buy a Tissot in the sales and it's been great cost me £180.

I bought this watch last Christmas as a gift for my father to simply use as a dress watch, what do you get someone who wants for nothing? he's retired and one of these that don't see the point of paying a fortune for something when you can pay a fiver and get the same result. I.e the time! It is a lovely watch really well made and boxed really nicely, his face lit up! It sits nice on his wrist and is surprisingly chunky.
I respect the people who have their own opinions on this subject but as a deal and having bought one, it's hot from me.
Rickardo
26 Jun 16 #51
It is analogue, so guess you mean mechanical [movement]. I agree to an extent about licenced brands, although there are some differences between cheap, poor quartz watches and better quality ones, in terms of reliability and robustness, up to a point - mainly to do with the analogue mechanism and casing. Don't forget, Tissot and Omega produce quartz movement watches as well, although, personally I don't see the value in the additional premium over Seiko etc. for quartz (mechanical movement a different matter).
Rickardo
26 Jun 16 #52
That's a different argument - the Lidl shaver wasn't trying to pass off as a premium brand.
