I've popped this into deals as the games evidently needed to be purchased from Steam, also it looks to be a time limited promo on certain games. Mods, please feel free to move as you see fit.

GoG.com have today launched GoG Connect.

THIS IS GOG CONNECT

Connect your Steam account and jumpstart your GOG.com library.
You own the games, so why buy them more than once?

HOW DOES GOG CONNECT WORK?

To connect your library with GOG.com, sign in to your active Steam account via this page. You'll be able to import all the games listed below to your GOG.com library – assuming you own them.

The eligible games are limited-time offers made possible by participating developers and publishers, so stay tuned for more games to come.

You can connect only one Steam account with your GOG.com library. This process is permanent – choose wisely!

There seems to be a time limit on being able to import from Steam to GoG. The following titles are currently eligible.

BIT.TRIP RUNNER
BRAID
BREACH & CLEAR
BREACH & CLEAR: DEADLINE
BROKEN SWORD: DIRECTOR'S CUT
FTL: ADVANCED EDITION
GALACTIC CIVILIZATIONS III
MOUNT & BLADE
PROJECT ZOMBOIDIN DEV
SAINTS ROW 2
SHADOWRUN RETURNS
SHERLOCK HOLMES: SECRET OF THE SILVER EARRING
WITCHER: ENHANCED EDITION, THE
THE WITNESS
TO THE MOON
TRINE ENCHANTED EDITION
TWO WORLDS
UNREAL GOLD
UNREAL TOURNAMENT GOTY
VVVVVV
XENONAUTS

More titles coming soon.

Yep, that platform that legitimised PC gaming, lets you have all your PC playing friends in one place, has decent sales and gives you free cloud storage for your games as well as fast download speeds and automatic updates for games. What a disaster Steam is. Sigh.

No, I think you're being very naive if you think that PC gaming would be anywhere near where it is now without Steam and its DRM. Piracy was so rife pre-steam that developers and publishers such as Ubisoft openly stated it just wasnt worth them releasing games on PC, and yes, Ubisoft has their own DRM platform, but thats off the back of Steam.

It's a brilliant deal, effectively a free extra copy of all the eligible games you own the steam version of without all the restrictions of DRM and one you are free to transfer between computers and use as you wish.

Plus as others have mentioned GOG versions tend to have extras and their versions of the older games tend to be better optimised to run on new systems.

Great service, hope it continues to grow....

It's a bit crappy that FTL has to be the 'advanced edition' considering that was a free upgrade that is automatically installed when I install the base game on Steam. I'd love to have FTL in my GOG library but sadly it doesn't detect it or a few other games that are in this list that I own slightly different variants of. Good effort and I'd like to see where it goes but as it stands not yet there.

Yeah, this is really odd. It won't activate BIT.TRIP RUNNER, Braid, Saints Row 2, Shadowrun Returns or Two Worlds, all of which are on my Steam account and really should have activated.

I'm chalking this up to teething problems or the servers being overloaded.

Definitely teething problems, I'm experiencing a few issues syncing. After all it is only an hour into its lifespan.

The GOG versions of games tend to have neat extras, as well as being DRM-Free. It's definitely a positive for some.

I correct my earlier comment, they are now showing the missing games. Seem it takes a little time to figure it out, but says it's found nothing even if it's not true.

Sorry but you must be very naive. PC gaming was a thing before Steam and will still be a thing after it's closed [which I'll be amazed if it does]. Steam has improved the distribution of games to a audience that doesn't care for a physical product and arguably for those that can't be bothered to locate/install a patch manually. Fast downloads speeds are a necessity of any digital service not something it should be commended for.

Since Good Old Games became GOG they seem to be becoming a clone of Steam and that IMO isn't necessarily a good thing!
Jonj1611
1 Jun 16 3 #21
Why are they naive? They haven't said pc gaming wasn't a thing before Steam, I was gaming back in the day's of 286's and steam has managed to put everything in one place. Remembering the days of manually installing patches for Company Of Heroes I think I would much prefer Steam takes care of it for me.

Apart from quite high prices I would like to know what Steam has done so wrong?
reddragon105

Yes, I've just done it now and after I enter my steam username and password and enter my steam guard code it just says "processing your request" with the spinning circle but nothing happens even after ten minutes, guess it's stuck, should I refresh.

Also the log in page for steam always comes up in a foreign language for me (not just on GOG) yet on the steam client everything is in english as it should be, not sure how you check language settings? Mine seems to have gotten changed somehow....

Just managed to get mine through; 6 games added :-)

I used to have the same problem with the Steam intermediary being in a foreign language. I think I resolved it by disabling my VPN.

"No eligible games found"

So I guess they have some issues to work out with this system given I have at least 6 of the games listed. Hope they get it sorted since I'd quite like to have DRM free versions of more of my games.

Steam pretty radically changed the PC gaming market and massively increased access and competition driving down game prices.

Also what's wrong with the principle behind a distribution platform? In particular if it's developer agnostic like GOG and Steam, it's a massive improvement over the alternatives for managing games, keeping games patched and up to date used to be a real hassle.
ST3123
1 Jun 16 #31
I'm guessing their servers are overloaded as I refreshed again and got: "YOUR ACCOUNTS ARE BEING CONNECTED Due to exceedingly high demand this may take up to several days, please check back later. Thank you for your patience."

Just hope they allow everyone who wants to, to get connected before they change the batch of redeemable games....

Sweet, cheers for the info. I wish there was an equivalent for PSN, it'd be incredibly annoying to lose all those games if Sony ever goes under.

The issue is that Steam API has a limited frequency of calls so the sudden influx will be hitting that limit. It should calm down slowly over the coming days.

Sign in via this page.. Yeah no thanks. Sorry but my Steam account has about 400 games on it, I'll keep it on it's own thanks. I use GOG, I'm just not willing to go to this level of trust.

As I guessed, the severs were basically overwhelmed. If you're having trouble linking accounts or getting the games you know you should, keep trying! It's just worked for me, so give it an hour or so and try again. It'll get there eventually.

Steam was a hell of a pioneer when it first launched, bring order to the chaos that was PC Gaming at the time. Everything united in one easy to navigate program that let you distribute updates with practically no effort and had frequent sales to encourage more people buy stuff? It's no wonder it became so popular (after a few teething issues, obviously). It's impossible to state how important it was to making the PC an actual viable place to release AAA-Games.

The problem is that, since it launched, it's steadily gotten worse. While at first it was tricky to get games onto Steam, the way they've handled it has been an utter disaster - Greenlight and Early Access have become synonymous with cheap, lazy, borderline broken games - and the completely hands-off approach Valve seem to have taken with their creation now that it's become 'the standard' is a good example of how NOT to do things.

GOG, meanwhile, sprang up as less of an alternative and more of a companion. It's taken a lot of inspiration from Steam (GOG Galaxy is the big one), but the guys behind it are a lot more hands on and as a result it's MUCH more consumer friendly. They work to get more obscure games released, they include a ton of extras whenever possible, they avoid DRM (a BIG positive for some people) and they work hard to make the site good. They've had a decent refund policy almost since they launched, for example, while Steam only got that last year, and GOG's version of Early Access isn't something anyone can use regardless of quality - they're extremely careful about what they allow to be sold.

Steam isn't going anywhere - it's too big for that now - and it's still a good client, but the sheer amount of shovelware that's available now should be some indication that it's not the bright, shining star it used to be. Hell, it recently Greenlit 407 games. You really think they actually checked any of them? Meanwhile, GOG is turning into a surprisingly attractive companion, and moves like GOG Connect are fantastic ways to encourage people to not only give it a try, but maybe even keep using it.
iNSOMANiAC
1 Jun 16 #36
I really dont understand what your issue is with greenlight. yes it's full of shovelware and tat but nobody is forcing you to buy it or even look at it, I certainly don't. Do you go pottering around Asda moaning because they sell stuff you don't want to buy??
fishmaster
1 Jun 16 #37
There's pros and cons. As a PC gamer it's likely you need Steam, Origin and uPlay, you don't need GoG yet. Most people like the idea of one place, one login everything managed, the downsides are you're tied to that one provider and whatever happens to them and also something happening like your account getting banned or some other glitch.

PC gaming digital downloads are not solely Steam, it's currently Origin and uPlay as well and I find that tedious to manage.

Due to exceedingly high demand this may take up to several days, please check back later. Thank you for your patience.

DAYS!

There's nothing to be worried about. It's similar to using Facebook, Google or Twitter to sign in to your account on other services - your login credentials aren't shared with the third party site (i.e., GOG in this case).

I personally do not see why i would want to import steam games to GOG as well, never had any issues with games on steam, plus would you not be losing some features like your steam friends list and all the chat features, in-game steam overlay, the abilty to launch the games via big screen, steam cheevo's.......or am i missing some big feature here that GOG would offer to make up for losing all those?
BuzzDuraband
2 Jun 16 #43
I think you misunderstand. They're not removed from Steam. They are duplicated so you own copies on both platforms.
JustWakeUpLink
2 Jun 16 #44
Maybe the problem is just that greenlight and early access are both decent concepts and I would be interested in using both of those services, but at the moment, there's too little moderation about what games should be accepted. Plenty of people have suggested improvements and Steam has totally ignored them - if they took heed of public criticism, they might have something worthwhile and people might stop complaining about it so frequently.

Although I suppose that if people did just ignore them, Valve would finally pay attention XD
XP200
2 Jun 16 #45
Have you seen the games availible for this, why would i want access to a second copy of said games, one was bad enough. :stuck_out_tongue:
BuzzDuraband
2 Jun 16 #46
It's working on a timed schedule, when these games end in 4 days, more will be added.
XP200
2 Jun 16 #47
So basically you can either play on steam and get access to all the features that comes with it, or play the same game on GOG without said features.

Oh well, i suppose choice is a good thing.

2 Jun 16 #48
A lot of people, myself included, have had a bit of trouble getting to GoG to recognise their Steam lists. GoG confirmed this on Twitter. Your issue might be related to that.

Only connected my accounts a few hours ago and it's already finished, with 11 games added to my GOG collection. so it probably isn't going to take days for anyone.
ST3123
2 Jun 16 #51
All done at last. They send you an order confirmation email so you know it's completed, which is nice. I've added 13 new games to my GOG account and saved a theoretical £107.37, not bad for a few mouse clicks!

Here's hoping GOG connect enjoys a long life.
Liam1990
2 Jun 16 #52
GOG allows you to have DRM free versions of the games so you actually OWN the games. Your steam account gets banned? You still have the games. Steam for some reason closes down? You still own the games. Good to hear they've sorted the teething issues
Jonj1611
2 Jun 16 #53
I think if they were ever to close down their is a mechanism for releasing games so they are still playable. Its how offline mode works within Steam.

So how do you import your GoG games into steam so they you can get all the achievements etc via steam?
As far as i know you can only add non steam games on to steam but they do not track anything
ST3123
22 Jul 16 #56
Anyone know when or indeed if they are going to add any more games to GOG connect? I check in about every week but there never seems to be any more games to add, I suppose it's possible they just aren't games I own but I have quite a good collection on steam so thought if they were cycling them with any regularity, I would have got at least a few more added.

Really hope it hasn't gone the way of the dodo as I thought it was a great idea....
Illusionary
22 Jul 16 #57
I expect that there will be more to come at some point but yes, I'm fairly sure that nothing's been available since a short period after initial launch.
