Don't be ridiculious, if you read the full sentence it's quite clear what is being sold.
If you can't or won't read more than 2 words then that is your problem.

I'll do your work for you so you don't have to use common sense on the Aldi website! :smirk:

No, it's NOT Online only, and it's available instore from 9th of June. As for the memory card, it all depends on what you set the image quality to.

Is the footage admissible as court evidence? Will the battery last very long? How many minutes footage on 4mb card range from low to high quality?

Yes, Good item. Really pleased. Got two of them, one for me, and one for my son.
We are both happy with them. The quality of the vid I uploaded does not accurately represent what you get. In truth there is some slight pixelation on video - but nothing like the poor quality from the Aldi units.
They are night and day by comparison.
Do not regret returning the NG units.

Hi, how are you getting on with the M10 after a couple of weeks of usage ? Is the quality of the videos satisfactory ?

Does anyone know if the Aldi camera takes the same batteries as the SJCAM SJ4000/SJ6000? They are both 900mAh 3.7V and appear to be the same dimensions.

Finally got round to testing my new SJCAM M10, Have upload a few pics (all at 12M setting) and vid (1080p) to Flickr.

A lot happier with this vs the Aldi camera. There is some blockiness on some of the video, but nothing like you get on the Aldi unit. An extra six quid well spent. Put a Gopro harness on the Dog, but its a lot longer vid, and to be honest you need sea sickness tablets before viewing, so haven't uploaded, (plus its bigger than the flickr size limit).
On Flickr there seems to be some compression during the upload, as the Vid is definitely better played direct from the MicroSD

I ended up going for a dbpower sj4000, guessing it's a sjcam clone? good Amazon reviews, 45 there but got it from eBay for 29.99. read a couple of other good reviews about it and the few videos on YouTube seem really decent for what I'm looking for

Re M10 Anti-shake/Image stabilizer.
Hmmm It looks like this is now missing from the menus. It was there on prev firmware. I guess that's so as not to impact sales of the M10+ Gyro Image-stabiliser. Will test and see if digital anti shake is applied by default. Bike ride should test this.

23 Jun 16 #321
At the pricepoint of the SJCAM's I think you will continue to struggle. I'll bet the majority of ones proporting to be 4K are 2K at best. Some are fakes and will be nothing like this.
At least the M10+ doesn't says its 4K and (I assume) correctly states its 2K. I think, as you say, 4K with anti-shake and all the fittings is going to cost quite a bit more at this point.

No mate - I haven't, but I can confirm my two M10's have arrived from China safely today (I ordered on 12th June). Charging them both at the moment.
As I said before the Paypal billing via visa was to Tomtop, so this is just another ebay shop of theirs. Maybe they have a whole raft of shops, its not unusual, but I am happy so far with what appears to be genuine items.
These look legit. Very good packaging (with hologram SJCAM 'scratch & check' sticker on box). Really good quality items.
Will try and get a couple of photos/vids in next day or so.
Very happy so far, but then I was with the Aldi ones till I tested them.
Unfortunately can't do a back to back test with the Aldi's but I do have a couple of pics/vids on my hard drive saved from before I handed both of mine back to the local store, for comparison.

you've got a good point about Youtube, the quality of the techmoan ones on Youtube seem to be a lot better than the quality of the one I posted too. I also have similar thoughts to sbirsen on the matter of upgrading even more slightly. I have a 4K TV but am struggling to see a camera of this type which will record at 4K in good quality with anti-shake and which can be made waterproof. I did see the new version of the Xiaomi Yi but think they're £180.

22 Jun 16 #317
Thanks. I had a quick look at the techmoan.com's review for sj4000 vs sj4000 wifi, and I will probably find it useful to be able to start/stop recording and preview the videos via my phone, without having to move the microsd card each time.

Now it's a question of finding a seller who doesn't send fake M10s . A lot of the ebay seller seem to have the same Tomtop certificate of authentication on their listings. Have you used usbcity888 before ?

Thanks for your help btw
meggie_dude
22 Jun 16 #316
For me the answer is no.
You are right - there are other models, but if you want to go that route you are adding extra 50%+ (more like ~100% for the M10+) to the price, and suddenly there may be other models to chose from. I can live without wifi control and just used an old fashioned lead. 2K doesn't help me as my TV (and all other displays) are no better than 1080P (1920 x 1080) so won't see the extra pixels.
If I was to go up a level I'd go to a 4K camera, but then have to buy 4K display hardware to play it on.
You pay your money - you take your choice.

22 Jun 16 #315
Thanks for the ebay link. The link you provided is for the original M10. There are apparently 2 other models of the M10, the M10 + has 2k support and then there's the M10 Wifi, both are around £20-£30 more on ebay. Do you think these models are worth the premium ? Why did you chose the original one if I may ask ?

Ref the vid on Youtube - don't judge quality on youtube - because you lose quality in the upload and it all depends upon how the person generating the vid has saved it and maybe postprocessed it prior to upload.
I mentioned the anti-shake/image-stabilisation in a prev post, because its clear that the Andoer camera has a limitation here, that can clearly be seen in the vid I linked. Quality is a different matter.
If you look at the Techmoan web site you will see that he prefers you to download vids to judge quality and avoid youtube for this very reason.
Judge for yourself from the Techmoan site - as he is probably the best impartial reviewer of dashcams and action cams on the web. Remember though the M10 is effectively a SJ4000 in a different box, so you can judge a Techmoan SJ4000 review to give you the same info for a M10. i.e either are great, but its worth noting the M10 does come with an extra mode button to quickly get at the key features in the menu, and the SJ4000 doesn't.
Another key point SJCAM did not secure a patent for the SJ4000, and so we get all the clones/lookalikes. Since the M10 is newer, less people have attempted the blatant copying, hence you are pretty secure in getting a legit SJCAM if you order online.

Cheers. I really can't make my mind up now. The M10 is the best I've seen sub £45 from a UK based seller (I need it for the weekend after next so can't rely on China) however it's quality doesn't look amazing on videos like this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qU__6P7uD0I

This is the one I went for. The seller is "usbcity888", but the Paypal payment was to Tomtop. As I say I ordered two and so got the extra 5% off. Looks like the amount has gone up a little since I got it, but not much

I'm the same, the lack of stabilisation on the Andoer puts me off. Can I ask, is http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SJCAM-M10-Ultra-HD-1080P-170-Action-DV-Sport-Camera-Camcorder-Waterproof-D3Q7-/361573256753?hash=item542f720e31:g:ArIAAOSwNsdXR80h this the one you went for, albeit £10 more (presumably as the unit is already in the UK?)

Thanks guys - I'll look into both of those options.

For anyone based in the Cheshire/Staffordshire area and wanting the Aldi National Geographic camera, I returned mine (unopened) yesterday to the Congleton Aldi (Mountbatten Way) store.
meggie_dude
20 Jun 16 #307
I toyed with getting the Andoer myself, but in the end plumped for an Official SJCAM M10 (same camera internals as SJ4000) from Tomtop via their ebay store. Actually ordered 2 of them to replace the 2 returned Aldi ones. Pretty good deal for £36 each delivered.
The thing that put me off the Andoer was the lack of Image stabiliser such as you get on the SJCAM units and more expensive GoPro. The lack of that is a real deal breaker for me.
The Youtube review here at about 1m20s in illustrates the issue Andoer vs Gopro review
Waiting for delivery from China - so fingers crossed.

See the post above this one for some thoughts.. Yes its that one.. on ebay I bought it from tomtop here: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/381640284230?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

Its actually slightly cheaper from tomtop's website (pay in dollars and it ships from China), which is where I would normally have bought it (tomtop are good), but in this case i needed it faster than china would have managed.

I'll post some video up tonight for you if I can.. It's a MUCH better buy than the ALDI one. Colour's are better, no weird artefacting/banding, it's definitely better than 1080P resolution (it's not however full 4K)

Battery is good, and lasts long enough for me (plus it uses SJ4000 batteries so I have tons of spares already).. It's 100% SJCAM 4000 compatible for accessories and mounts as well.. the waterproof case works well and is waterproof.

The app that is required is on the play and app stores (though the barcode on the side DOES send you to a dodgy chinese download site), the clean safe app is available here for android: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.aidewin.x1.view&hl=en_GB

Video quality is comparable to the SJ4000 for sure.. so its leagues better than the ALDI.

Hi Herbz

That's a great idea..please do...as long as you put 'Like A' in the title...in fact I prefer it ...IE if I did a search on HUKD for let's say ...a Meade ETX125 telescope and somebody showed a 'cheap tat knock off' (as you put it) clone of it ...as long as that clone wasn't labelled as an actual Meade (which would be an illegal fake) but just a copy of it's general design I could make my own mind up which to buy.

If they had put 'LIKE' a Meade it would bring my attention to maybe a product I wasn't aware of before.

I could then do some research ...read some reviews and make my own mind up if the 'cheap tat' was what I wanted or to pay the extra for the genuine article.

AT NO TIME would I think I was buying a genuine Meade Telescope.

BTW I am happy with my 'cheap tat' SJ7000 I have just bought for £32 it's not a gopro and my Hero3+ Black out performs it BUT it was my choice to buy it....it is LIKE a Gopro and I knew I wasnt buying a GoPro.

Alrighty you've convinced me - any cheap tat knock-off that I post a deal for in the future will be labelled with the thing it's copying.

My £35 Andoer 4K has arrived.. I need to have a better test of it once its not pouring with rain..

First impressions though are good.. its easily triple the quality of the ALDI one (which was/is rubbish quality), its up there with the SJCAM for sure.. especially as its cheaper, got wifi, has '4K' mode (which is more like 2K or 3K) at 30 fps, 1080p at 60 fps and 720p at 120fps..

Its a much much better buy at a fiver more than the ALDI camera.. (oh and 64GB cards work fine in it)

13 Jun 16 #296
As the per the other poster my SJ7000 will also only take a max of 32gb cards and I suspect this Aldi one is the same

It is because FAT32 is only capable of utilising up to this size...if you format a 64GB card as FAT 32 the cam will still only see it as 32GB and may not even see it at all

BTW the SJ7000 I mentioned way back in this thread arrived from Banggodd and is a great little cam...I have tested it against my gopro hero 3+ Black and the gopro is better quality (better colour and better sound etc) but not by miles and the SJ7000 is definitely worth the £32

My SJCAM won't read 64MB cards either so I'd be surprised if this one did

Well I've gone for two original SJCAM M10 for 6 quid more each. Aldi cams returned
They come will all the gubbins that the Aldi camera has (aside from the microsd)
They do all the Aldi camera proports to do, (but are actually HD, not what the Aldi camera actually is), also have anti-shake, and time lapse, plus lots of other settings.
Yes its off fleabay, yes shipped for another continent, and yes no 3yr warranty, but it is original SJCAM not fake, and gets good reviews, including off Techmoans site (which is the oracle of dashcam/actioncam reviews as far as I am concerned)
Its basically a SJ4000 in a diff box. SJCAM M10 Review here

BTW my review of the Camera never made it onto the Aldi site. There are a couple of less than flattering reviews there, but not mine. My review was considered and met all their review rules, but they have chosen not to upload it. "shugs shoulders"
EDIT - review just appeared. so strike last comment.

I thought I was going to be a lone voice but there are a few of us
I bought this for my granddaughter, a keen photographer, but was going to return it unopened. However, I decided to try it out first and then take it back with the excuse that it didn't match the quality of Bresser's youtube video but there are no problems with picture/video or sound quality.

The camera and controls look well built and the settings eg exposure compensation all function as they should. I think it's a bargain for £30 with all the accessories and a 3 year guarantee. I didn't want to risk a Chinese fake or an iffy guarantee on a gift.

Granddaughter is delighted with the camera. That's all that matters really

11 Jun 16 1 #289
The Quality of this is pretty decent yes it may not be up to scratch of a more expensive cam but it does what it does, I did not expect this to be a wow factor but I am happy with it, just use it on my motorbike for peace of mind and since this has been attached to my helmet other driver/riders seem more weary so for the sake of £30 what do you expect plus the fact a 3year warranty and accessories to boot good value for the money. I agree with johnmcglinchey
johnmcglinchey
11 Jun 16 3 #288
No pleasing some people - There is nothing wrong with this camera. I was going to take it back without opening it , having read those so-called reviews . Lucky I tried it out and was well impressed . It looks HD to me and the sound is fine . Dont listen to the gripers
meggie_dude
11 Jun 16 #287
I understand this if you went in with low expectations. There is lots in the pack. The fundamental issue here is that this is sold as a HD Action Camera. Its not HD, or even close to HD.
If you are happy enough with that then that's fine, but Aldi should NOT be selling these as HD cameras. As others have reported the quality of the vids and stills are what you will have found on a 10yr old phone.
So far the review I made yesterday has not made it onto their website, although they seem to have allowed a number of positive reviews - only one bad one.
We will see if the makeup of reviews match what people are saying on this site. i.e largely negative.
I would encourage others to submit their own reviews and we will see if they honour these.

No worries. Perhaps you could let HUKD readers know when you are taking it back exactly, as at 1347 degrees, it is obvious these items are in huge demand (as you demonstrate by saying you picked up the last one in that store)

Even VGA output is acceptable on a Smartphone dude due to the size of the screen. but its not advertised as such.
720p would maybe be OK from this - acceptable, if you like (for the price), but not these blocky, badly coloured results.
mikej
10 Jun 16 #275
One thing I've noticed is that the video looks passable on my smartphone screen (apart from the purple sky !) - the quality deficiencies in the National Geographic camera footage are much more apparent when viewed full-screen on something larger such as my 24" 1080p PC monitor, so for anyone who mainly uses smaller phone/tablet screens for viewing, this camera might be acceptable for the money, especially considering that a genuine SJ4000 is currently around twice the price.

Think I'm going to look into spending more though myself, in an effort to boost the quality as I'd also like to be able to view on my plasma TV, as well as smaller devices.
vadiro
10 Jun 16 #274
I have got the last one from the Oxford store, but I am disappointed.

The size of the sensor is never ever bigger that 2 MP. Even in natural light the images are very poor. Actually, images taken with a 2 MP Sony Ericsson camera phone 10 years ago are way better.

The video is also pretty bad. It looks to me like an up-scaled HD, not a real one.

So, even if it's cheap and with 3 years warranty, is useless for me and has to go back.
meggie_dude
10 Jun 16 #273
They're all from China mate, even if they're shipped via a 2nd party UK postal address (to make them appear legit). Getting from the UK is no guarantee that they are OK. A lot of the Chinese ones are fine - its knowing what to look for.

Since you cant see the full raw videos anymore from my dropbox.. here's a (very rough) direct comparison on YouTube: https://youtu.be/5mKUPUQS5Lw

No processing.. just combined together in Vegas and uploaded to Youtube..

9 Jun 16 1 #269
mjpeg produces around double the filesize of a more modern format, of course that also means the micro SD card you are using needs to cope with double the data rate that a camera using H.264 would.

Cameras sold today using it are likely to contain old, slow (now budget) video processors, and are more likely to compromise on quality by using high levels of compression to reduce the data the processor has to cope with, which with motion jpeg can make the image look a bit blocky.

I didn't buy this but cheers for the uploads and saving a trip/time from a hyped up cam.

Will wait for a decent 4K or a mobile action cam mount.
sambartle_theone
9 Jun 16 1 #267
They are actually taken at the exact same time.. I was just struggling to hold 3 cameras without pressing the buttons on the side by squashing them together! They are pointed at roughly the same target at all times.. they are slightly delayed due to the recording start delay when i hit the buttons

The lens flare was actually pretty consistently worse on the aldi.. which i think is perhaps because its lens protrudes a bit more than the SJCAM ones..

For anyone looking for a decent cheap action cam.. I'm awaiting an Andoer 4K (25fps), 1080P (60fps) WiFi model from eBay... which is £35 delivered from a UK warehouse.. I will update here once it arrives if anyone wants to know if its any good.. (should be this week or early next), but I have heard good things about it.

If you accept that this is 30quid for a pretty decent set of Action Cam accessories with a camera that looks ok but has shocking internals and firmware then thats absolutely fine.
I could have accepted it if it was a decent camera and sh*te accessories, but its not even close to 1080p, barely even blocky VGA.
Nevertheless I'm sure that the ebayers out there will make a few quid from some unsuspected punters.

Yes that looks a good buy as well...you cant keep up with them there seems a different one coming out every day ....I must say though that even though my gopro has 4K I tend to stick with 1080p ....I have just bought a Typhoon H Hexacopter with a 4K 30fps camera and the footage viewed direct from the sd card is stunning but it is much harder to get a totally smooth jerky free render for uplift to youtube etc with 4K than it is with 1080p even in Sony Vegas 13 which I use....but thats another story...

Yes it's a wonder how they can make these cameras with all the included equipment for the price....as long as they are getting generally favourable reviews you cant go wrong

Truly, truly bad on the tests I have done.
Video pixelated to death even on highest vid setting . Horrendous colouring.
Stills are even worst. 12MPixel is just a joke.

Ah well, postage was free, so just a short trip to our Aldi and swap for some Frangipanes and other assorted groceries

Nothing like the SJ4000 clones....but actually nearer a genuine SJ4000

Tested & the sensor is a genuine 12Mp & the footage is true 1080p (unlike most of the SJ4000 clones)

I doubt you will find a cheap clone with a 3 year warranty either

And here are some sky shots.

Please note that these are screen captures taken from the uploaded footage while displayed on my PC and are not from the cameras themselves.

Note that the banding seen in the sky on the Aldi camera footage actually looks worse in the video and appears when the camera is being moved - this isn't visible on the footage from the other two.

Not exactly a scientific test I know, but better than nothing and hopefully helpful to some people...

Here are some screenshots from sambartle_theone's videos - hope he doesn't mind !

Please note that these are screen captures taken from the uploaded footage while displayed on my PC and are not from the cameras themselves. It's also worth pointing out that the SJ4000 can be as much as twice the price and it looks like there are many different SJ4000 clones around with varying prices, so the quality of an 'SJ4000 Clone' will presumably vary from model to model.

The videos were shot sequentially rather than all at once so the footage isn't identical (eg. ignore the lens flare from the Aldi pic), but it should give you some idea of what to expect... [update : my mistake - Sam says they were shot at the same time]

Thanks for taking the time to record and upload some videos !

The footage from both the SJ4000 and your SJ4000 clone looks to be pretty good and obviously very similar, whereas the Aldi National Geographic camera footage looks far worse and almost SD-like by comparison, with the details in the flowers and banding in the sky (not seen on the other two) being the most obvious differences.

I think I'm going to take mine back unopened as I would rather spend more to get better quality, but this may still represent a good deal for others more concerned about cost and it also removes the uncertainty about buying a clone from a potentially unknown source, I guess.
sambartle_theone
9 Jun 16 #249
Yes (almost all ALDI specials are covered by the 60 day no quibble returns) but if you have a GoPro already and are looking for similar quality save yourself the bother of repacking it and just return it now.. The SJCAM *might* just about in ideal conditions come close to competing with the gopro.. this does not.

If you just want a cheap cam to abuse.. and arent bothered about absolute quality.. you are getting a load of gopro compatible mounts thrown in here, plus a memory card, and a charger.. basically for free..

There's a few ways to tell.. the menus are often different on the fakes, as are the version strings.. you can tell by the lens in some cases.. and sometimes the best way is to flash the SJCAM firmware to it and see if it still works afterwards.. it tends to swap buttons or not light the screen on the 'good' fakes (in which case you flash back to the version it came with and accept not updating). On the bad fakes it usually fails to update at all.

The returns policy is to be honest fairly non existant.. you can return things, but once you pay the postage its not worth bothering. Its a risk you take with the Chinese retailers.

That said I've only ever had one fake from Banggood (when ordering from the 'original' SJCAM listing), and they did send me a new one when i complained about it. I've also had some fakes from them (which i knew would be fake as i had looked at the reviews and the price)..and the quality of those is usually roughly equal to the 'real' ones.. (in the zip i uploaded in post 231.. the clone sj4000 is a banggood fake - and its quality is near as good as the real deal)
niall1234
9 Jun 16 #244
Is there any obvious way to tell if you receive a fake? What's the return policy like? Thanks.
sambartle_theone
9 Jun 16 #243
banggood are pretty good for originals... they do also sell fakes.. so have a look at the recent reviews and stick to the ones around £35-£45 (for the non wifi) to give you a better chance of getting a good one.

All gone in Bradley Stoke if anyone is looking for one this way!

So what are the credible alternatives to this 'cheapie' then? Are the other go-pro like clones out there?
sambartle_theone
9 Jun 16 #241
You could take your chances on a SJ4000 clone on ebay for ~£15 and the quality will be about on par with this £30 one..

However.. it does have a 3 year warranty.. is well built, is of 'OK quality', has a decent battery (it weighs 16.7g which is about right compared to the ~13g ones you get that are fake and low capacity), and has all the usual mounts, plus a safe UK Charger, Its also got much nicer buttons (they work everytime), which the SJCAM and clones tend to have horrid buttons., has a better battery door.. and a 3 year warranty.. oh and a 4GB card included.. (and its case is waterproof.. I checked)

If you value those above the absolute picture quality.. its not a terrible buy.. it may even be a good buy..

For me its not worth it (I have a few SJ4000 already), as i'm after the better quality video than longevity.. and the warranty with the chinese cameras is basically... if it breaks, bin it and accept that you got a load of extra spare accessories etc.. which I am personally ok with.. if this breaks ALDI will sort it for you no questions asked.. So theres definite value there.

I've never had an action camera before, have an old hand hand DV camera which I hardly ever use and film stuff on my iPhone SE. Can't afford an expensive camera at the minute.

Reluctant to put it back until I've tested it but the reviews from you all are shocking!

Just received the camera. I am not a professional but the quality of video and sound reflect the amount of money I have paid for it. It looks like I used a 2 MP camera. Sound is so poor that you barely hear it. I will just return it. With all the adjustments and it just don`t worth it.

Definitly not.. I've just dropped mine back at the post office on its way back.

You can fix the tilting by sanding the shininess off the mounts where they screw together assuming it was that joint that was tilting.. if it was the clamp to the bike.. stick electrical tape round the bikes bars first.. though agreed the quality is not as expected.
murtgurge
9 Jun 16 #233
Sadly I agree with people and will be returning mine. The picture quality isn't unbearable but my limit really was if numberplates aren't readable then I don't want it - and sadly they really aren't.

You will also notice in my video that it tilts and stuff - I could not get the mounts to take a firm hold no matter how hard I tried. for £30 it's fun, I think. It's just not what I am after.

So, this was filmed on the 1080p setting, sadly.

If you want to see the quality of the ALDI vs an SJCAM vs a 'Good' Clone SJCAM.. I've been out over lunch and recorded a very short, very boring clip with all three cameras just hand held.

All on default settings, 1080P, all without the waterproof cover.. all the film and plastic removed from the lens etc..

It's 620MB but here you go.. (also notice the avi/mjpeg compression on the aldi cam makes the file double the size of the SJCAMs)

I picked two up today and I think they'll be going back... quality is not good enough for me. Really grainy. However, it was only £30 and you do get a load of accessories, so if the quality is good enough for your intended use it's not a bad deal.

Picked up one of these this morning for my daughter's birthday (having had fun with a GoPro on holiday recently), so I'd really appreciate some sample footage before I wrap it up for her as the (mostly excellent) reviews I'd based my decision on were for the SJ4000 - I hadn't realised this was a clone !

Does anyone know if there are any disadvantages of the AVI/mjpeg video format it uses over the MOV / H.264 format used by other action cameras ?
sambartle_theone
9 Jun 16 1 #224
I'm just charging it up now.. but first impressions are there is at least one improvement over the SJCAM..

The battery door is completely different.. Its a slide off job not a stupid poke the tiny tiny slidey plastic piece of tat button/catch like the SJCAM and clones..
It's also captive (its attached by a piece of ribbon inside) which is good as it means no loosing it (I've lost a fair few SJCAM and clone battery flaps)

The battery also stands a tiny bit less chance of blowing up as at least they took enough care to spell water correctly.. which almost all SJCAMS and clones spell watter, which might mean they took more care manufacturing it. Its 100% SJCAM compatible though.

Having said that they have misspelled input in the "Date Imput" option, so it could be the same crap...

Build Quality wise it seems good.. the front is fixed properly (very few clones are).. and all the accessories look like direct SJCAM clones.

The firmware is recent (March or April 16 depending how you read the date), and is of a type seen on a lot of the poorer clones.. L1012-YC-160304 It is NOT like either the old or new SJCAM firmwares... it's definitely 100% clone.. It's a later version of this: http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showpost.php?p=32881540&postcount=353 (it even has the solder score marks in the bottom of the battery bay.. so its the same manufacturer..)

It remains to be seen what the video quality is like.. Will update once I've compared it vs a clone and a SJ4000..

Hi guys, as has been said above, its the 140 lens Bresser.
I've got a support call raised with Bresser & Aldi to see if there's any new firmware available. I'm conscious about judging quality until I know it's running the latest firmware.

9 Jun 16 #211
140 degrees doesn't make it better or worse - 170 is kind of fish eyed, but cameras that are 170 and zoom to 140 can be worse quality (in 140 mode) because of the zoom factor. The question is still really how good the camera is, like before.

My concern is with it being 140 it could be the same (perhaps rebranded) one they had out 2 years ago. I mean, it still has 3 year warranty so there's always that. I will still post a video for you guys when mine arrive (hopefully tomorrow).

as my reply above, SJ were making excellent cameras of a completely unique shape and design with fish eye lenses and metal cases. To be fair they already had a good reputation, for producing good cameras at a sensible price, before they evolved to copy the Go-Pro shape.
Gold Feet
8 Jun 16 #195
To be fair, they made sports cams before they decided to copy Go-Pros shape. The old SJ1000 was highly rated by Technomoan back in the day. Some people preferred the fish eye lens, it had dash cam features and metal casing, but was taller than it was wide and top heavy.

It's not made by 'SJ'....it's just called an SJ7000......that may seem like a rip off of the 'SJ' name but then the original SJ4000 was a rip off copy of the GoPro design!...the cube shape, the lens placement, the button design, the case design, ....all blatent copies of the original Gopro ....but when people realised they performed excellently and were MUCH better value than a genuine GoPro (I paid the full £300ish for my genuine GoPro ) they started singing their praise. Now people are sticking up for them and saying others like the the ones I linked are fakes of them!

They are all at it ...different Chinese companies making cameras that are clones with slight variations of the original Gopro.

So yes it's not an 'SJ' 4000 it's advertised as an 'SJ7000' but as you have noticed it doesn't have the letters 'SJ' printed on it ....it's just another of the many many clones coming out of the original gopro design.

Whoever make it ....and who cares....I suspect they are churned out of the samer factory...it DOES get good reviews (the reference to it not being a follow up by 'SJ' of their 4000 is also explained in the 2nd Youtube clip I linked).

Don't be put off by it's extremely low price ...when the original SJ4000 came out eveybody claimed it couldn't produce results as good as a gopro for £70 but they were prooved wrong.......2 years on prices are getting even cheaper (as they do).

A company like Aldi will not be selling 'fakes' yet the 'National Geographic' cam is clearly a copy of an SJ4000 which is a copy of a GoPro ...this doesnt make them Fakes....just copies ......If as some posters (who haven't even actually tried it) it turns out to give bad results then you can just take it back for a refund.

when the cam I linked to arrives I will test it next to my gopro and post on HUKD

I do see their point though, with paid advertising the ASA wouldn't allow this type of advert and neither would the GO Pro company. I do understand that they are saying that it's 'like' a go pro but it still makes it click bait and misleading. Due to the similar design too, It could lead people to believe that they are getting a similar product to a go pro, which they are not for £30.

This appears to be a Chinese SJ4000 rebranded for national Geographic. I've got three SJ 4000 clones bought from Ebay and they are all of very poor picture quality, despite claims of 1080p. I also have 2 genuine SJ400 cams and they are astonishingly good. You'll pay around £60 for the real thing, which is a fraction of the price of a GoPro and just as good.If these are the real thing it's a genuine bargain.

I agree at the mo 4K is a bit overated but alot of the 4K stuff also does very high frame rate full HD....ie the camera on the Hexacopter I have just bought does 4K at 30fps and 1080p at 120 fps! and 12mp stills...so excellent for slow mo.

4K Tv's are getting cheaper and cheaper though and although no channels as far as I am aware broadcast in 4K if you do have 4K cameras you can definitely see the difference on a 4K TV....my current TV is only 2 years old and a good 50" Panasonic plasma BUT when in a few years it is time to replace it will probably be a 4K so its nice to have 4K footage taken now to display on it.

Like you say though 1080p still looks excelent hence me going for a 1080p SJ7000....at these prices it will still find a use even if I get a 4K action cam in the future

yeah i think you could be right - i researched these loads... ok for the money and extras.. but Id go with the SJ4000and get some accessories off amazon or flebay too.. by the I use techmoan for reviewing cameras.. he does have ablog and youtube channel which is worth following and supporting.

just my 2 pence worth, personally i think 4k is overkill and over price, so i dont buy 4k TV also.
but i am very interested with 1080p with 60 frame/s, this should give crystal clear during sport action.

Saw these but have ordered one of these instead http://www.banggood.com/SJcam-SJ7000-WiFi-Car-DVR-Sport-Camera-DV-Camcorder-Novatek-Waterproof-Full-HD-1080P-p-983677.html

For £3 more you get a bigger 2" screen and wifi ...for anyone bemoaning Bangood I have bought loads of stuff (mainly flashlights) from them ...all genuine and only one thing didn't arrive...it was quickly sorted and a replacement sent.

If you are prepared to wait a couple of weeks for delivery then sites like Banggood and Gearbest are fine...ok not the 3year warranty you get on alot of stuff at Aldi or Lidl but for £32 I can live without that.

A friend got a SJ4000 a couple of years ago and although lacking some features like wifi I can honestly say the 1080p footage taken in daylight looks as good as my genuine GoPro Hero 3+Black which was 4 times the price.

The SJ700 I have linked above gets good reviews like here

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dqc3CKWX3-M

and here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IxTF-dp0yS8

So either the Aldi National Geographic which is a SJ4000 clone...inch and half screen and no wifi from UK or for £3 more an SJ7000 with 2" sceeen and wifi from China ...btw alot of the Ebay sellers of the SJ7000 claim to be UK based but are in China...hence me using Banggood as I have had good service from them in the past

Looks identical to the SJ4000 I bought in EBay the other week for £15. I tested it out today at Chessington and was more than up to the task - for £15 a treat but don't be fooled by the RRP. It looks like all these 'SJ4000' are made by the same OEM and then branded appropriately. For half the price (pretty much) you can take a gamble on the EBay ones. Heat for finding the deal though.
PapaDom
3 Jun 16 1 #111
For anyone thinking about getting this, I would recommend you go for the Eken H9 (around £30 on gearbest from the EU warehouse if you use the 5% off code) instead. Looks like a good deal for the price and the fact that it can be taken back if necessary.

I'm holing out for a goo deal on the SJCAM SJ4000 WiFi version, around £45 at Gearbest and the like and £57 on Amazon...I'd prefer Amazon even though I've purchased a few things without issue from Gearbest.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/SJCAM-Original-Waterproof-Camcorder-Accessories/dp/B01CNVJVBC/ref=sr_1_7?s=sports&ie=UTF8&qid=1464973902&sr=1-7&keywords=sjcam+sj4000+wi-fi

Biggunspaul
3 Jun 16 1 #96
If you honestly think that the footage doesn't look too bad then you either have very poor eye sight or have never seen decent quality video before.

And even if you can take it back for a refund,it's still two round trips wasted.

For a few pounds more there are far better action cams to be had.I also wouldn't get too hung up on the warranty as the specs on this thing will be long out of date before the warranty is.

dudwood_fudwood
3 Jun 16 #90
Thanks. I fully understand how it works. My point is, this can be used as a dashcam IF YOU WANT TO. Some people can't afford a sports cam and a dashcam. 2 birds 1 stone n all that. So whilst a true dashcam is easier, there is no issue in using this as a dashcam as well as a sports cam.
rev6
3 Jun 16 #89
You get in the car, start it up, dashcam starts recording, and you don't need to worry about it. That's it.
dudwood_fudwood
3 Jun 16 #88
Well, obviously that is down to user error. What happens if you forget to put your seatbelt on? Does that happen often? Make it part of your routine. No issue.
MannDuo
3 Jun 16 #87
Well, i've took a chance on it. The footage someone posted on here saying it's bad, i'm 99% certain that isn't this camera.
rev6
3 Jun 16 #86
But what if the accident happens and you haven't started the recording, what's the point of it?

Dashcams usually record and write over old recordings so it can do it endlessly. That way if you crash you can stop it afterwards and know it's there.
dudwood_fudwood
3 Jun 16 #85
Right, but if it records only 5 minutes of video, after the crash/incident you stop the recording. You have evidence of what happened. So you only need 5 minutes video. You don't need evidence of your whole trip. Just the minutes leading to what happened.
rev6
3 Jun 16 #84
It's not movie your recording. Accidents are usually random and unexpected.
dudwood_fudwood
3 Jun 16 #83
No, because everyone knows what a Samsung/Sony phone etc is. From reading the title you know exactly what the item is. If you are searching for a GoPro and this pops up you have the choice to scroll on past it if you don't want it. Other people however, might find this a good alternative to a GoPro.

So much whinging just for the title of a post which is very clear on what is being sold.
dudwood_fudwood
3 Jun 16 #82
A dashcam only needs to be able to record a few minutes. You don't need the whole journey. Just the last couple of minutes leading up to a crash/incident.
dudwood_fudwood
3 Jun 16 1 #81
Really? Misleading? If you find that misleading you should maybe get your eyes tested. Very clear what the product is.

3 Jun 16 #80
I can't comment on this one.

But the kitvision splash is a bit rubbish, it doesn't cope with vibration (I think the sensor/processor is probably very slow), or poor light and records in mjpeg, which takes about double the space on the micro sd card of a more modern video compression format.

eg you can see the height of the image changing while the boat is hooked to the dumper and the diesel engine is idling https://youtu.be/3DpOpvmZ5dg

In low light it is pretty awful https://youtu.be/UdmZBhhuyEE

Ah, Go Pro, a triumph of aggressive marketing over substance. Just about any other offering on the market is as good if not better for a lower price.

I use my 'action cam' as a dash cam, no real difference apart from not having some car specific metrics. If you just want to record simple video it's a good alternative to make use of one device for two applications.

Voted hot as it seemed a good deal, but after looking at the footage I think even at £30 it would be a waste of money. Yep, tonnes of accessories. And it came from Amazon, so returns are pretty easy. It's £1.80 for the 4gb card so I wouldn't consider it a deal breaker - especially as others have mentioned, 4GB is pretty useless in an HD camera - it'd fill up in minutes.

EDIT: To clarify, I'm not knocking this product, I'm knocking the market. After 3 years, I'd have expected a camera to be able to do 1080/60p for this price, but it doesn't look like any can.

4GB is normally OK for about 30-45 minutes of 1080p on most action cameras. But with 32GB microSD cards well under a tenner it would be silly not to upgrade unless you're just trying it out.

3 years warranty is an additional £14.99 though.

Only 720p and doesn't come with the same accessories mounts that can be costly.

Heat! It's £30 quid with a 3 year warranty (none usually from China) And if it's rubbish take it back and buy £30 quids worth of their ale, that'll keep you happy!

Sorry guys but its a no from me, it just looks so antiquated like some mad professor from the 1920's has designed. Jesus!
the 2020s are not far away. I dont want it to be Applesque in appearance and style, maybe the designer(s) of this camera might seek tips and advice from James Dyson of Dyson industries whose finished products are stylish and ergonomically functional. I am not wanting a James Bond type camera in the shape of flower to fit in the button hole of my lapel, surely National Geographics that isnt asking a lot is it? when you are counting your lolly you will be thanking me and saying if only, if only, I will have done my good deed for the day and be riding out into the sunset.

These look identical to the clone sj4000 i received today from ebay via china for £12.58, their ok for the price but the images are a little blured and the colours week but comes with case and accesories. Mine arrived within 10 days so might be worth a punt on ebay, but most ebay ones dont have and memory cards.
andyroo77 to bigjeremy
3 Jun 16 2 #26
If your images are blurred, try connecting to an external display like a TV and try screwing the lens in further or out further, you might have to break the glue seal to turn the lens but they should turn like a screw. You can check the TV/external display to see if picture is improving.

For how go pros are used, many will find this just as good.

Some of the cheap ones available aren't too far off older go-pros.

Spend a bit more and you can get some features not found on most go pros.

You can find ones on ebay that can shoot on 4k for around the same price worth a look but usually because of the quality of the camera most the outcomes are the same worth researching though!

I'll do your work for you so you don't have to use common sense on the Aldi website! :smirk:

No, it's NOT Online only, and it's available instore from 9th of June. As for the memory card, it all depends on what you set the image quality to.

does anyone know how much footage it can store on the 4gb card?

thinking about getting one for my motorbike, but wondering if this is going to be any better than the cheap ones on amazon - 23.99 being the cheapest with 84% good reviews (4star and above)

also is this instore now or is store date the same as the delivery date online? or is it online exclusive?

Which Logo? the National Geographgic? that has been plastered over a lot of stuff nowadays..! but still

Looks like : Video resolution: 1920x1080 (30fps)/ 1440x1080 (30fps)/ 1280x720 (30fps)/ 848x480p (WVGA 30fps)/ 640x480 (VGA 30fps)

I have a Sony Action Camera AS150, was eyeing a XiaoMi Yi but for £30 i cannot complain and will save £20 on the Yi + get about £10 of accesories so the cost of this camera would eb around £20 - £25
