FYI ALL...
The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 is expected to be announced the 7th July (Next Thursday) event with retail availability a week later on 13th July....
I checked and they're unavailable, but they're close to what we thought the price would be, unlike the Nvidia cards.

DON'T buy ANYTHING until the 29th June. The cheaper and faster RX480 is about to be released. They're saying between £140-£199 for close to or faster than GTX 980 performance.

Bang for buck is pointing to the rx480 shame thier is no 490
i must admit time is getting away from me there a bit more than I'd like to admit, because I thought I'd had mine over 2, but the corollary to the point is that it's not done yet, and I don't think the 1070 is putting it to bed in the immediate future.
There may soon come a time when it's easier to recommend a 1070 than a 970, but the case for an upgrade will be harder because we're stuck in this "4K gap" where the 970 is currently largely sufficient for resolutions under 4K, and the more powerful cards are overkill for less than 4K and just sort of not quite there yet across the board for 4K, at a price point where they'd really need to be the complete package.
I think the 979 was the right card at the right time basically, and I'm not seeing that change for another 6-12 months, but despite what it might sound like I'm looking forward to the 4K switch.

I don't understand how this is hot. I posted a Nitro Sapphire 390 the other day for the same price, which is a better card, and it got voted way cold.

And I'd put good money on it being nowhere like as power efficient.
Despite the well deserved hounding nVidia got over the memory issue, the 970 has been one of those cards that will always hold a special place in my heart. It's held its price well, it's remained powerful enough over several years that I'm still playing at 1440p whenever anything else comes out, and when it does finally start to look too long in the tooth, the incredible power effeciency and low temps mean I'm going to be thrilled to stick it in a second machine.

As in my post further up, pricing on the 8GB XFX black edition is £175 + VAT, direct from channel, so that'll be £229 ish retail.

All I know is that the Geforce GTX1070/1080 quoted figures were way out when both cards were released, if the RX480 is as good as the previews state then I'll think they'll want to definitely milk it whilst they can so the prices should be higher, we'll see if AMD play nice or not.

This card would be a sideways move for you, the 390 is typically regarded as having a small percentage improvement over your 970. Pre-release benchmarks (not always reliable admittedly) show the 480 trading blows with the 980 which would be an upgrade for you, especially given the higher VRAM of the 480 if you game on your multi-monitors. I'd say it all depends on the price for you of course, the 970 is still a very capable card. I've been on a 280X for nearly 3 years now and the 480 is my logical upgrade route. And of course, waiting for full benchmarks and OC and cooling reviews of the 480, and probably aftermarket cooler. Potential upgrades are exciting aren't they?!

Crossfire so many problems here. Does not scale 100% then again no multi GPU setup does currently. Will not rival a GTX1080 anywhere consistently despite the media hype.
As for the 14nm, there's already overclocking potential it appears with the RX480, so we'll see what it's released.

Everyone expecting to pay £160-180 for an rx 480 will be thoroughly disappointed unless they want a blower style 4gb version at best.
Retailers have accidently leaked prices around £240 or 300 euros for an 8gb aftermarket rx480.

Been looking at this card for a while, previously had the Radeon HD7950 a brilliant card for the price considering I got it second hand from an auction off eBay for £110, I now have the GTX 970. I was thinking about getting this card prior to ordering the GTX 970, but now with the release of the RX 480 on the horizon, would it make sense if I were to sell my GTX 970 in exchange for an RX 480, I currently have a NVIDIA Surround setup, 3x BenQ 27" 1080p monitors, and a bog standard i5 4690, coupled with 16GB DDR3 RAM, I am really tempted to not get this card and wait for the RX 480 release in a couple days.

Radeon R9 390[11] June 18, 2015 Grenada Pro (Hawaii Pro) GCN 1.1 Single Precision = 5120
Radeon RX 480[11][12] June 29, 2016 Polaris 10 GCN 1.3 Single Precision = 5833
GCN 4th Generation "GCN 1.3" (Arctic Islands/Polaris)[edit]
GPUs of the Arctic Islands-family will be introduced in Q2 of 2016 with AMD Radeon Rx 400 Series branded graphics cards, based upon the Polaris architecture. All Polaris-based chips will be produced on the 14 nm FinFET process.[19]
GCN 2nd Generation "GCN 1.1" (Sea Islands, HD 7790 and Rx 290/260 Series)[edit]
AMD PowerTune "Bonaire"
GCN 1.1 was introduced with Radeon HD 7790 and is also found in Radeon HD 8770, R7 260/260X, R9 290/290X, R9 295X2, as well as Steamroller-based Desktop Kaveri APUs and Mobile Kaveri APUs and in the Puma-based "Beema" and "Mullins" APUs. It has multiple advantages over the original GCN, including AMD TrueAudio and a revised version of AMD's Powertune technology.
GCN 1.1 introduced an entity called "Shader Engine" (SE). A Shader Engine comprises one geometry processor, up to 11 CUs (Hawaii chip), rasterizers, ROPs, and L1 cache. Not part of a Shader Engine is the Graphics Command Processor, the 8 ACEs, the L2 cache and memory controllers as well as the audio and video accelerators, the display controllers, the 2 DMA controllers and the PCIe interface.
The A10-7850K "Kaveri" contains 8 CUs (compute units) and 8 Asynchronous Compute Engines (ACEs) for independent scheduling and work item dispatching.[15]
At AMD Developer Summit (APU) in November 2013 Michael Mantor presented the Radeon R9 290X.[16]

The all point RX 480 is power draw + I do think AMD tweaked some setting in the chip but all architecture is similar to R9 380X and the FPS are similar to .....
But the biggest change is that old chip on 28nm and new one on 14nm and this reflects in power usage + heat .
My point i will be getting RX480 just for better heat + power + crossfire add

£167 for the 4GB and £210 for the 8GB, so add about £30-£40 to those prices in reality. Anyway it's not a wise idea to buy this card at all with the RX480 release so close.

It's the worst 390 money can buy, sadly. Not only is the cooler pretty poor, but the card is voltage locked as well (the only 390 on the market to be so), meaning it won't overclock much either. Literally any other brand is a better buy if you can find one for a similar price.

I'd keep an eye on the Overclockers forum. You may be able to pre-order a 480 before the 29th to get yourself at the front of the queue. My current understanding is that they should be available on the 29th but then again it does depend on the demand and how far it outstrips supply (if at all).

Yea I game at 1080p too and have just bought a new monitor so I don't see me upgrading it for at least 3 years. I will probably purchase an Rx 480 as a 1070 would be overkill for 1080p and my current GPU died so I am literally using the onboard GPU on my 6600k till the 480 releases. Just out of curiosity, do you know if the cards will actually be for sale on the 29th June as that's what I heard and I am desperate for a GPU.

21 Jun 161#11
Sad but true.
$200 + VAT @ 20% = $240 + a further 10% uplift because we're all rich in the UK = around £200. £230ish for those cards with aftermarket cooling.
Based on the rumours, this card is faster than the 970 and around 980 speeds. Considering the 970 could be purchased for around £240 almost 2 years ago upon release and could overclock up to stock 980 speeds, it's not the stellar increases I was hoping for. As a 970 owner, I'm not prepared to drop £400 on a 1070 (£300 is my max spend on a graphics card), the 1080 is silly money so I'll wait until later this year for Vega to land to create a more competitive mid/high end to drive prices down a bit. If I do become really impatient, a cheap 980Ti may be an option but we'll see what happens to it's pricing.
FYI, I still game at 1080p so I only need an upgrade for full on eye candy and 60fps.
