Somewhere around £300 and £400 depending on the edition.

This is significantly less that the unfortunate prices at one or two other suppliers. The only thing to look out for is the height of the card if you have a SFF case, as this has a non-reference PCB (two power connectors and more VRM phases) but I doubt if there's going to be much in it, speed wise, between the different brands - fan noise will be the only real difference anyone will really notice

Amazon also have the EVGA SC at 559 - also lower than elsewhere - this is normal sized with ref Nvidia PCB, and the Gigabyte Gaming G1 for 559 also

Refreshed the page to see they bumped it up to £600, came here to find this deal.
Ebuyer dun goofed :-D
There's always a chance the price will drop before ordering, so at least Amazon don't take payment until dispatch.

Indeed!

Two will be, allegedly, (where games utilise two GPUs) but at close to double the power consumption...albeit at a pretty big saving.

I think the 1070 looks like a cracking card, if you're not loaded, as does the RX 480 if you A) can wait a bit and B) have under £200 to spend

1 Jun 16 2 #32
The 1080 is 23% faster in AosT compared to the Fury X, but in RotTR it's over 80%. We could say 2 480's are probably not going to be faster in any other game but this one. I could be wrong.

What's that got to do with anything? People here base their opinion off of facts and other peoples opinions. It's how it goes. AMD themselves compared the 1080 to the 480. You can't blame us!

From what I've seen so far, a single connector is enough to reach into the 2GHz core clock range.
The dual connecters might be on the really high end cards with liquid coolers and dual BIOS.
jwsg
1 Jun 16 #37
Somebody did well in spotting a low 1080 price. There isn't any opinion to be had - if youre after a 1080 the deal is good - no one is going to buy 2 480s instead because it gets a mention on HUKD of all places.
Adam2050
1 Jun 16 3 #38
Currently the value isn't there versus the the 480 even in crossfire. (IN THEORY)

Why do people take sides with this ****. I don't care what manufactorer does what, bang for your buck is what you want. AMD is making it cheaper for us all, even if you want a 1080 it will bring down the price. It's a win win, if you got £600-700 to spend on this card you're going to be playing AAA titles, most of which have some sort of Multi GPU support, so please tell me why if those figures are correct, that you are all taking it personally. £450 vrs 600-700 why would you even get offended it's a win, and uses less power etc. IF it was the same way round would be saying the same. Will be getting myself 1x r9 480 on release and dual when it drops again (IF the figures are correct)
rev6

"If you're 100% convinced that you'd rather have two RX 480s instead of a single GTX 1080, bear in mind that with power consumption up at 300W with two cards (versus 180W for Nvidia) you'll need a higher capacity power supply and a more expensive motherboard that supports CrossFire. In other words, it's not a zero-sum game.

1 Jun 16 4 #43
I like the look of the RX480 as a casual gamer. AMD will shift some units if they have some good benchmarks in games. I don't see the RX480 as being a competitor to the GTX1070 even, it's simply not. Nvidia will come back at AMD with GTX1060 and that's where things will pan out. It's utter nonsense to think the RX480 is a competitor to the 1070/1080.
smckirdy
1 Jun 16 #44
EVGA is better than both IMO if you are talking about graphics cards. It's not the Founders Edition which is basically an overpriced reference card and quite possibly evidence of Nvidia losing their minds to think a £100 premium for something not as good as third party manufacturers are putting out. Unless you are weird and really want the "reference" look don't get an FE, get a good third party with a better cooler for less money.
Adam2050

Yes of course bud, but I'm not worried about that with my Tier 1 power supply (not being snobby just in response)

If you want the fastest card available for games you have to buy a 1080. When RX480 comes out you could go with two of those and still save money, however you're having to deal with dual-GPU driver/game support which I personally don't even go near. It's just not worth it.
I'd like to see AMD bring out a competing high end card that has a great price like they've done for the mid-range. Just to give nVidia competition.
rev6
1 Jun 16 1 #47
It's a great price range. £150-200. It makes high performance PC gaming affordable for once. AMD really shouldn't have compared them to a 1080. It should have been a single 480 vs a 970 at most.
Adam2050
1 Jun 16 #48
That test we will find out with be a little publicity stunt. (Betting both weren't on the same settings)
fishmaster
1 Jun 16 #49
You're assuming that 2x RX480 will give you the same experience across all games against a single current high end GPU solution, that's never been the case with Crossfire. Your RX480 will give you a great 1080p gaming experience for sure, two of them to kill a GTX1080 nope, the caveat is Crossfire.
rev6
1 Jun 16 #50
The only time multi-GPU will become viable, in my opinion, unless the console market vanishes over night, is that consoles get released with multi-GPU's. Otherwise it's just not worth the effort. As you can see with the latest DX12 titles. The support is in the developers hands which takes time and money to implement.
fishmaster
1 Jun 16 1 #51
That will come when Vega architecture cards come out in 2017, they'll need to be very good though to tackle the Titan replacement and 1080Ti.

Talking about GPUs is fun, the 1070/1080 were hyped at first I thought yup won't live up to the hype but it did. Then along comes the RX480 which seems an ideal card for midrange gaming, I currently have an R9 270 and for me to want a GTX1070 I'd want to be 1440p gaming and I don't have a monitor to suffice that yet. I'd seriously think about getting an RX480 for myself, possibly overkill for how much I game but it would last, as has my R9 270.

You'll always get people that will side to one manufacturer or another. I just buy whatever suits me when I need the hardware. We need competition and it looks like Nvidia have nailed it this year for higher end gaming whilst it looks like AMD could nail it for midrange with the RX480 and also take in a lot of £$ as $200 for VR spec gaming is very tasty.
Adam2050
1 Jun 16 3 #52
I'm currently also on a 270x, I don't have the time or money to sink £700 on a graphics card, when all I want to do is play the game not marvel over every pixel to me makes little or no sense, but each to there own.

Do you have any information on how well Vulkan API is able to scale multiple GPUs? The API is also a large factor, and if it has design in place to support multiple GPUs better than before then surely that would help too. Vulkan is very interesting but a long way off from mass adoption and far from a finished product. It's good to see it included with Nvidia and AMD drivers though. Even my Nvidia Shield TV has support for it.
rev6
1 Jun 16 #54
I don't have anything about Vulkan directly but any game that ran Mantle (BF for example, and dragon age) didn't do well. Poor scaling or stuttering. This could be due to the engine being retrofitted with Mantle support, not sure.

So amd claiming you need two of their cards to match nvidia? 300w of power required to beat one 180w card. What sad times, shame that AMD have ruined them. Used to love my old 4670. They'll do well in the budget end no doubt, but like their processor lines, they're being dominated by rivals. I'll be surprised if AMD don't sell off the GPU line in next few years

If you have a 970 then the 1070 is an upgrade but I'm not sure its £350 worth of an upgrade - so if you can stretch to one of the £559 1080s at amazon (e.g. Gigabyte G1 and EVGA SC) you'll be much better off

If youre buying from scratch - or buying a ready built PC - then the 480 starts to make sense - I wouldnt be surprised if its 75% of a 1070 for £200 so many people may just go with it for 1080p

Never been an AMD fan....owned several (mostly for HTPCs) and every time, years later when I think "there drivers can't be as bad as they used to be back in the day" and every time proved wrong.

Sad that they still have to rely solely on AoTS benchmarks as one of their performance beating games.

Curious though....as never bothered reading into the new AMD 480 card......any new developments with it on the VR front, like Nvidia with their multi-projection rendering? I'm guessing not - making it an even bigger dip in mediocrity

The event was very vague. It started like they had a new idea of showcasing GPU's, for the gamers, etc, but it was just like every other AMD event. Very vague and just another paper launch. There will be work done in the backend to improve things, there always is, like better memory compression, better Async compute, but we won't have a clue how that's improved gaming and VR til the 29th.

You can't compare a 1080 to the as yet not even officially released Vega, if Vega comes out and is amazing (and that is a big if) Nvidia will just turn around release the 1080ti anyway. What AMD have sensibly done is figure out that they can't compete at the high end and target the upper budget market with the 480, I am not even sure why they bothered with that daft demo of 2 of them beating a 1080 in a single game when we can pretty much guess that in most games that won't be the case...
Back on the 1080, I will definitely get a 1080 over a 1070 due to the additional limitations they put on the 1070 (Worse memory and Upgraded SLI bridge), I think it was a bit mean of Nvidia to cut the memory down.

Don't just ask a question like that and rely on an accurate answer as it will change with every person that responds. Do your own research, visit their forums and see what issues are going on and how customers are being treated. Also find out their service policy for repairs/returns and shipping. If you don't do it now you might have plenty of time to regret not doing it.

I'm more inclined to go with the Zotac model for the 5 year warranty. (Although one of my GTX 480's died a few months outside of the 5 years :disappointed: (It was a waste of time really).

Think the 1080 is going to be a big step up off the 480 anyway!
Ferrari100
2 Jun 16 #104
No its not, I couldn't really care that Nvidia has throttling issues.
I do care about what Nvidia's rival is bringing to market however.
Reddit reported AMD were trending massively this morning on there site
It's big. Many people interested in 980 performance at $200 and who better to have the technology than AMD who are in all the major consoles.
Ed from Sapphire on AMD's amazing price/performance 480 impending release:

https://www.reddit.com/r/Amd/comments/4m6q7r/took_long_enough/

'Hey guys, Ed with Sapphire here.
For those of you that do not know my background I was a reviewer for 20 years plus with a weekly radio show on PC Gaming and Technology. During those 20 years I preached from the pulpit of the mainstream users and put all my focuses and efforts there.
The announcement of the 480 is to me a vindication of my position that enthusiast are great but the mainstream is where the people live.
For to long the mainstream market has felt like it was getting table scraps. We would see uber high ends cards come out and then the mainstream would get something toned down, the leftovers from the high end banquet.
The 480, to me, marks a long time coming in that the mainstream is being given the chance at the table first. We are not getting leftovers we are getting the main course. To me this is really exciting.
Think about it this way...
A good king will make sure his nobles have nice bobbles and keeps them happy. A GREAT king will make sure EVERYONE in his kingdom has plenty at their table. AMD has shown with this launch which of the big two care more about the entirety of computer gaming.
Well done AMD.'

Going to wait for the 1070, the GTX 970 was the most popular buy for people between that and the GTX 980 purely down to the price to power ratio.

Nvidia have a rival? That's news to me! :stuck_out_tongue:

Great to see someone from Sapphire praising AMD, though. If I ever want an honest, unbiased opinion, it's a tough call between someone whose career hinges around AMD doing well, or someone with a £20,000 stake in AMD.

But, joking aside, AMD's paper launch hasn't changed the market at all.

The GTX 1070 has, at a swoop, made the GTX 970, 390, 390X, 980, Fury, Fury X and 980 Ti redundant. It's pointless to buy any of those cards any more. And if you want more power, there's only the 1080. Like it or not, Nvidia's launch changed the market - sadly, even moreso in Nvidia's favour. :disappointed:

The RX 480? If we're suddenly taking a marketing team's word as gospel (the same people who described the Fury as an "overclocker's dream" at their last launch, don't forget  ), then the graphics card market hasn't changed at all. The 380X was already the fastest card in Windows in the £140-200 price range - but, if you were worried about SteamOS, Linux, power, or having a slow CPU, you'd skip the 380X in favour of a 960. Now the 480X is probably - again - the fastest card in Windows in the £140-200 price range. But none of the problems have, apparently, been resolved. It's just that people who would have bought a 380X this month can buy a 480X instead next month.

The comparatively high TDP is odd to see as well, considering how much AMD were hyping their amazing performance per watt with Polaris. If it matches a 980 in performance, as AMD's marketing team claim, then it's roughly the same performance/watt as the old GTX 970.

It still looks like a great card, and I'm pleased and surprised at the price of the 8GB variant (again, actual benchmarks pending...), but it's not a market changer. The people who had to buy Nvidia before still have to buy Nvidia again.

Does anyone know if Amazon will be restocking any time soon?

I know there's apparently a global delay across the board, but I'm curious if they've provided any further info than the usual 17th June date?

Upheated, although I'll stick with my 980ti for now

2 Jun 16 #109
Best to wait for the full range to come out (GTX 1060 etc) and independent reviews to appear than take marketing hype from a company whose sole interest is selling Radeon cards. The 480 looks like it might be the best option in its price bracket but I'd avoid crossfire which is more trouble than it's worth.

The mainstream £100-200 segment has really suffered over the last couple of years with AMD just releasing rebadged cards and Nvidia overcharging so hopefully the 480 can liven it up a bit.

You are talking about one of the most biased sources in existence. One of the main AMD distributors is praising a card his company will be distributing in less than a month!

What do you expect him to say? Of course he's going to 'be excited' that is his job, to spin the PR machine for AMD. I expect nothing less from "Ed from Sapphire".

Here's a question for you, are you excited for a card that is a downgrade to your current Fury X card? Or are you excited because you want AMD's stock to increase so your investment can go up in value?

There is a third option, which is to root for competition. I'm on board with improved competition. But I don't see the 480x providing competition against NVIDIA.

This paper launch, and assumed lack of advancement from AMD, means very little. It isn't progress, it's just a grab at some cash by AMD, which it's obvious that they need by their loss in revenues over the last year+.

The NVIDIA event was a paper launch but they showed much more.
All we have for near a month is a price and a debatable CFX benchmark in an AMD showcase game.

Depends usually they bin the cards down each level if they cant get them to OC at the level and then give them the respective brandings. So I don't think it will otherwise you'll be lucky.
yoyo59
2 Jun 16 1 #121
nothing special here, they always delay the cards or say they're having stock problems just to keep the hype right where they want it, if they was all readily in stock they wouldn't sell half as much.
Ferrari100
2 Jun 16 #122
...and from Nvidia you had that same AMD showcased game + Doom and a 1080p monitor for a 4K GPU and cards still are in massive short supply.

I'm waiting for the Zen CPU to come out, hopefully it's as good as they say it is, to match or come close enough to an Intel 8 core. Then I'll get a decent GPU with it too. Probably this or the 1070.
Nate1492
2 Jun 16 #126
I'll take it from your lack of answer that you are not actually intending on buying the 480x, since you own a Fury X, which makes sense.

But really? The Doom event was ok, but it is lightyears better than AMD showing a single review of their card in SLI on a game they essentially use as a tech demo.

At least Doom is a game most people will honestly consider buying, where AOTS is a game that much fewer people will buy/play.

I think I saw 14.5k reviews for doom and it's only been out for 3 weeks while AOTS has less than 1k and has been out over 3 months.

thats normal in my experience. happened to quite a few items i bought which became unavailable and still delivred mine. maybe they cant get anymore or afford to take on more orders.
dezontk
4 Jun 16 #136
They've probably sold out of their next shipment already so will need further shipments to fulfill more orders. If they left it up then one guy could get it from their next shipment and the other person may have to wait 1-2 weeks longer which creates something a bit uneven.
