Careful as a lot of people complain about this being a boring game- sad but true I found that to be true.
Buy Star Citizen instead - it's like GTAV in space.
star citizen is nothing but a £100 million tech demo still though, right? if you want a game you can actually play, then it's this. no one other than die hard fan boys will recommend star citizen.

Star Citizen is unfinished and you can't get a refund anymore if you don't like how it's progressing. If you can stand these shouty presenters then they explain it here >
The game that just announced refunds aren't allowed despite years of delays? Great advice... Star Citizen promises a lot, and I really hope they live up to that promise. But for now, it isn't really a viable alternative to Elite. There is room for both in the genre anyway, but Elite is the better purchase for now. It is also worth noting Freespace 2 over on GOG is still a good option, especially with the mods that bring it more up to date.

Star Citizen is a scam. It really, really is. None of the amazing game mechanics that have been promised over the years exist, and more importantly the technology to develop them does not exist. The engine chosen for the game (Cryengine 3) was designed for a first person shooter with limited multiplayer support – it has some very serious hard-coded limitations – and they are trying to build a universe-spanning massively multiplayer game on top of it.
The developers are happy charging literal thousands of dollars for in-game space ships that do not exist outside of a picture on their website. They promise ridiculous things like simulating the amount of oxygen in the player's blood to model suffocation, procedurally generated alien species and full physics-driven control of the ships' thrusters that reacts to things like damage and weight distribution. Meanwhile the game itself is a glitchy mess, with people clipping through walls, ships merrily spinning around fixed points in space or glitching around randomly, people flying around in space in their underwear and so on. Huge ships feel weightless, flight mechanics are garbage, guns feel crap to shoot, the art direction is bland. There are NO game mechanics to speak of – no reason to go dogfighting, no missions besides literal "fly here and click a button", no NPCs to fight or interact with in any meaningful way, no in-game economy except for actual real-world money that can be spent on stuff like: a mining ship when mining mechanics have not been implemented (~$300?), a passenger ship when no passengers exist (~$200?), a capital ship which does not exist at all (>$1000!), a "space motorbike" that can fly on the surfaces of planets when NO PLANETS EXIST in the game (~$100?).
The fact you describe this as "GTAV in space" means you either work for the developer or are a colossal idiot.

I know what you mean, I've been dubious about buying it and was waiting for it to come on offer. I couldn't find it anywhere such as CDkeys who normally do cracking deals on stuff but Elite seemed to be a hard one to find on offer anywhere.
I have bought it now the full lot was almost £25

Elite Dangerous is shiny as heck but after a few hours you will realize it is the most boring game in the world and there is almost no point playing it.

ED is not perfect - step ED is not perfect - steep learning curve, still being developed - but if you stick with it, read guides on youtube reddit etc it is an excellent sandbox game with hundreds of hours of gameplay.

You can wake up in Star Citizen, walk around the station, go to your ship and climb in, fly off, have some battles or land on a space station for FPS action. Or you can go on missions - maybe you want to repair some broken communication relay...you'll fly you ship to them. Then get out and EVA inside the broken and repair it. Outside another human player has arrived and is shutting your ship or maybe pirates have arrived and you need to fight you self out of there. Soon planetary landing is coming...and rememeber you play as yourself rather than as a ship. Why not give it a try? I have both games but very quickly I got what Elite was all about and really didn't want to grind like that. Much more fun getting credits in Star Citizen by doing co op battles against NPCs or missions to repair things or gather info. for insurance claims. Horses for course though.

I've put a good few hours in when it was on offer for a tenner early in the year.
Found it a bit dull, maybe in my head I thought it would be a modern Frontier Elite II, in some ways it is graphics are superb, warping in to your first solar system is awe inspiring - but then you realise nearly every other system is the same, after your 100th jump you don't even notice the milky way, planets or sun.
However in more ways it reminded me more of battlecruiser 3000ad - in that it felt completely unfinished, little to help the player in the initial hours and lack of atmosphere. Didn't feel like there were any other players around, I didn't send or receive a single message - makes online only being utterly pointless, didn't like the 'fake' hyperspace jumps, the missing features which are being sold as DLC are sorely missed - maybe I'll return in 5 years when things like being able to walk around your ship, multi player crews, some sort of social interaction etc are added. I kept at it as some players said it gets better... maybe it does but after 30+ hours I've kinda moved on to something else.
I signed up for star citizen during the free weekend, couldn't get it to load.

Can you get a refund from steam after two hours of gameplay? They often give a weeks free flying so anyone can download, play for a week for FREE! Please try it next time as you can hopefully see what it is like- and what it will be.

i was wowed by this originally, found it very immersive with a flightstick and gasped first time i jumped to a new system and had my view filled by a sun !
bored to **** half an hour later as i fetched and carried stuff across the stars, overshooting waypoints and swearing at docking procedures. lot of stuff is 10min flight from system waypoints and you will either overshoot or get interdicted and shot down if you afk. combat is a drag too, fly in circles till you can zap em then repeat.
infinite space, each flight passes dozens of events you can stop and check out, amazing graphics and HuD/systems keep you immersed. very little actual fun.

Have 500+ hours in this game, used to love it, now not so much. There's simply been too many questionable design decisions lately for me to recommend this, and it's starting to look like Frontier Dev don't know how to implement anything other than more grinding mechanics.
if you're on the fence about this, I'd wait until the next major update for the horizons expansion, just to see if it's more of the same time wasting grind. Plus it goes on sale every Steam sale anyway.

I love this game, the steam reviews are really harsh on it. Presumably they are written by monkeys with no attention span. Give it a chance, go exploring and have fun. It really does take us back to the days when space games ruled supreme and I love it. Get a half decent stick however to really enjoy it. And if you have the funds, look into trackir 5, it will change your gaming experience completely for the better in games like this.
Then when you've done, grab DCS World for free, another absolute gem of a game/sim that the Ace combat/Warthunder fans have demolished in the reviews simply because they aren't willing to read a manual or properly set up the controls for a sim that promises to replicate all systems and flight models etc for complicated aircraft...

Totally agree. Note EdTracker is a cheap alternative to TrackIR - headtracking is ideal for dogfighting in this game.

I love this game. I have it on PC and also bought it on Xbox One. Most complaints come from the 'instant gratification' generation with very limited creativity or imagination. They want everything streamed into their heads and handed to them on a plate. Elite Horizons has a steep learning curve. If you have any interest in Astronomy, Science, challenging gameplay where you are willing to use your brain and learn you will like this game.
Big shout out for DCS World. It's the best, modern fighter, combat sim on the market.
