Indeed looks a good deal for a small to medium garden. Only issue you may find is that your local garden equipment service folks may not be able to service it. I have had the same issue with in the words of two local service folks when looking at two petrol strimmers purchased online "Oh you got this on the internet (sucking of teeth) we done have spares for these and may not be able to get them..."

How much servicing will mower like this need!?
Fill oil, put petrol in and go.
Top up oil once in a while. Maybe change the oil and sparkplug once every few years if you want to feel like a mechanic.
Sharpening/replacement blade will be no big deal.

Unless you're a pro and run your mower all day every day, getting a big brand 'serviceable' one is a waste of money.

I would however by this model as anyone can service a Briggs and Stratton engine.

Looks quite good. I'm tempted. Although I'm still hunting for the aldi mower that someone posted on here. £89. But this does look better quality.

I bought a basic machine that is not self-propelled and has a plastic deck. Nearly as light as an electric but with all the benefits of a petrol....

http://www.homebase.co.uk/en/homebaseuk/sovereign-150cc-push-petrol-rotary-lawn-mower---40cm-317952

For a £100, you can't go wrong.

Really?

My lawns are c0.75 acre and sloped so no peace of crap make that neither of my local service folks will/can service will do. They deal with who they deal with and hold spares for the quality makes. Ask them to deal with a cheap German make.....And yes even on quality makes things go wrong. My neighbours Honda broke a cable last week, my Kawasaki brush cutter sheared in half last month..... my Stihl Kombi is misfiring.....

Is your lawn big?
dothedealnow
5 Jun 16 1 #10
Have you got a lawn?

5 Jun 16 #11
Einhell is the manufacturer of many of Aldi's Gardenline branded items so the quality is likely exactly the same. Aldi's guarantee covers you either way.

As for the comment earlier about servicing, the reality is that many places will sniff at pretty much any lawnmower brand they don't sell. I took a mower into a place a few years back that declared it to be unserviceable junk. The guy went a bit red faced when I pointed out that the "unserviceable junk" engine was a well rated Honda.

Great, so you are a competent mower service person? Seriously when the Chinese copy engine fails, try and find someone to fix it even with a parts telephone number!

OK, now an apology. There are indeed service agents, so you can get it serviced annually and when it breaks. Please ignore my rants. As I said if the first sentence of my first post, it is a good deal!

Thanks.

Wow. Calm down fella. Seems as if you've been sniffing petrol fumes...it's just an opinion they're offering. As are you, of course, but why the need to be so aggressive?

I wouldn't buy any of these the local smackheads love them. Unless it has an alarm immobilizer, wheel clamp and tracker.

Remove and strip the carburettor and clean it in an ultrasonic tank.
Just one of the many steps. Seounds complicated for most out there

6 Jun 16 #21
seriously, who's doing a £75 service annually on a £140 mower?

Put decent fresh fuel in, change the oil and wash out the air filter each season and you can be pretty certain that if the mower makes it out of it's 3 year warranty it'll go on fine for years. Even if something more major happens it can usually be sorted with little more than a rag and a few squirts of carb cleaner - most of the time it's harder to find a socket to fit the American bolts than it is to get the job done!

6 Jun 16 #22
Stupid question, but does this push itself? I have a very steep incline, can't use electric anymore, its killing me.
Also I have never seen my dad service his lawnmower and it's been going for years.
80 quid to service is almost as much as this mower.
Thanks
lilbeastie
6 Jun 16 #23
yes it pushes itself, but i wouldn't bank on it getting up any kind of incline (every self-propelled I've ever used will spin the wheels before it'll move on anything but flat ground. Even long-ish grass will stop them moving so don't expect it to power through if you leave the lawn for more than a few weeks.

Bought the non sp version, very happy with it and cuts really nicely up to the old mower

6 Jun 16 #25
Anyone know of a low priced one that isn't on a pull cord to start? Button or Key Start needed
lilbeastie
6 Jun 16 #26
I think you'll be looking at least double this price (and probably more like 3 times the money) before you get electric start on a petrol mower.

Unless your lawn is massive you'd probably be better off with electric or cordless mowers if you can't use a recoil start.

6 Jun 16 1 #27
I bought a cheapo Tesco mower 2 years ago (its actually a re-badged Cobra mower) for about £70 ish
1st year it worked fine NP at all. drained the fuel down over the winter and then last year I started to have issues with starting/running it. This year I decided to clean our the carb and it was working ok, but now I think I have an issue with the intake valve from reading some comments on the lawnmower forums

I've now decided to resource a 2nd hand hayter off flea bay, as for certain getting a decent mower that will last beyond 5 years is a must for me in the years to come......you have been warned in buying ANY cheap mower!

sorry- yes this is a good deal for a self propelling mower........will it last beyond year 3 is TBD....

6 Jun 16 #28
is this a Briggs and Stratton ?
gadgetcake
6 Jun 16 #29
Thanks, it's quite big, but not huge. Maybe 300 sqft. Self propelled is what I'm after, don't think you can get those in electric models.
M_z
6 Jun 16 #30
So you lawns are 0.75 acres? 32000 square feet.

Can I politely suggest that this is not a typical lawn size? So maybe you needs aren't typical of the majority? Have you seen the average size of garden you get in a modern house, even a 4-bed detached?
arotabi
6 Jun 16 #31
Have you thought that perhaps you're not the intended customer for something like this or did you just want to say how big yours is (lawn that is)? Your lawn is what... 55m x 55m roughly? I'd say that's in ride-on territory.

For large urban & regular suburban lawns (say 15m x 20m) used once every couple of weeks this would be perfect. I previously had a Mountfield (cheapo one) which lasted 6 years (sold it and it's still going). Then bought a Tesco brand one for £80 new two years ago and still running fine. I may have changed oil in the Mountfield once and sharpened the blade on a grinder a couple of times.
lilbeastie
6 Jun 16 #32
You haven't said your reason for wanting electric start, so I'm assuming that it's because you'll struggle to pull start a recoil mower. If that's the case, you'll probably struggle to manoeuvre a self-propelled petrol mower, as they're heavier than their push counterparts. If this is for strength or dexterity reasons a push electric mower will probably be your best (and cheapest) choice. If you can't have or don't want a cord then a cordless would probably be better than a petrol mower too as they also tend to be lighter - you should be able to mow 300sqft on a single charge with no problems. You'll spend a little more than this (£200-ish) but that's half the price of an electric start petrol mower. And probably half the weight too.

Bought a second hand challenge (think Argos own brand- plastic body) mower 4 year ago and its still working. Only thing I ever have to do is chuck some petrol directly in the carb after winter to start it up.

Also kinda self propelled...... the Mrs cuts the grass when I'm to lazy to do it :smirk:

I had an Einhell self propelled mower but it was really heavy and cumbersome. Lasted 18 months then stopped working. Couldn't be arsed finding out what the problem was, ended up buying a new cheap one off the homebase ebay page that was posted on here. Probably would have cost the same as the repair. It's still working one year later.

People are really pointing out that a 0.75 acre garden is huge unless you have a pony? We don't all live in cities with box gardens!
Takes us around 2 hours to mow a 1 acre garden with a self-propelled lawn mower on a steep incline for at least 1/2 the garden. And the self-propelled Hayter petrol does the hill start.

This is a very good price for a basic petrol mower- heat.

Thank you, yes it is for strength reasons, hadn't realised the petrols were so much heavier. Always avoided the battery ones as thought they would be under powered, but maybe technology has moved on, will do more research, thank you.

When I started my garden service a few years back I bought an Einhell. (big huge thing) and got laughed at by other gardeners with Honda Izy's. Five years later I have just sold it to my mate. Five years of only changing the oil, cleaning the filter and one spark plug replacement. No rot no issues. Miles and miles of trouble free cutting.

The lads with the Izy's have spent much more than I ever had. They are great when they work. Lots of snobbery with lawnmowers.
I would highly recommend Einhell.

8 Jun 16 #44
Mein Einhell arrived today. Assembled in about 15 minutes... oil (0.4 litres of 10-30 recommended) and petrol added.. mower fired up first time and grass cut. Really like using a powered mower.. no more pushing  If this mower lasts as long as my last German mower - 25 years- then I'll be a happy bunny. Thanks again OP
