I got mine last week (from serversplus) and made a few mods....
1) I added an ASUS AMD Radeon R7 240 2 GB DDR3 Graphics Card
2) I added a solid state drive for Windows Server 2012.
3) I added 2 sticks of 8GB Crucial Ballistix Tactical DDR3 PC3-12800 to go with the 4GB already there (20GB in total).
4) I added a StarTech.com 4 Port PCIe 2.0 SATA III 6Gbps RAID Controller Card for the extra drives.
5) I popped in two StarTech 4xSATA Power Splitter Adapter Cables for the extra drives.
6) Fitted a new cage and two new caddy trays (both bought on eBay), ready for the two extra drives (only one installed at the moment).
So, now I have 5 x 3TB WD Red NAS HDDs, with a 6th to add at a later date; all configured in (software) RAID5.
Pretty happy with my setup....for now.

Have you tried using the low power sleep modes? I read somewhere that the PSU makes a coil whine when the machine is on standby/Wake on lan.

i stuck an SSD and 2.5" drive in the otical bay and in addition to the 4x3.5" spaces i put another 3.5" on the top of the bottom cage and one slides into the space underneath the top drives. i put 2xpcie 2 port SATA cards in though. 2 of my older cards wouldn't work with win10
i was also going to get a R7 240 for about £50 or maybe a R7 250 for £10/£15 more. it looks like if it's in the top slot it will block the PCI-e slot underneath though? which would mean having to use the lower slots
i got my cashback confirmed by dell, so it worked out at £72 after cashback for the G3220 model with 4gb ram, which is crazy cheap. at some point in the future i might upgrade the CPU

I contacted Dell Trade To Save, they're aware of the error in the claim form, told me to submit anyway and they'd correct the amount when they assessed my claim. Indeed, my claim approval email stated £110

A keyboard, a mouse, and a display to use it as a desktop.
Personally, I plan to add an SSD for the operating system to give a file access speed boost and perhaps another 4GB RAM, but i'd see how much need there was for it after setting up and testing the OS and app's.

It's a nice piece of kit although there is some coil whine that only happens about half of the time when the server is shut down but plugged in. There's no switch on the back to cut power so has to be unplugged or turned off at the wall to stop it.
For the dell cashback you're supposed to wait one month after purchase before you can submit the claim then once processed it takes up to 30 days, took about 30 days for me so about 2 months wait for it but very straightforward.

anyone know where i can get a great price on a home pc tower?
arthurplank to vwblack
15 Jun 161#48
That is like asking "what car should I buy?".
My answer, an Ariel Atom, oh that is unless you want to go shopping, or put the dog in the back.
The server here is a PC tower, and will do a good job as a desktop PC if it does what you want it to do, so to speak.
Hardcore gamers would not consider it without some serious upgrading.
It will outperform most if not all desktops for office applications at the same price after cashback, so, in that sense, it is good value.

I saw a 5x to 10x speed up in our test framework with the Pentium (not the Xeon) but your usage might have different results. Certainly a very worthwhile upgrade at this price.

I have the T20 Pentium and it is a lot quieter than the NL36 it replaced - albeit the NL36 is old and dusty, but then I guess anyone looking at replacing an NL36 probably also has an old and dusty one.
BTW, if anyone wants an NL36 (boxed and like new - excluding dustiness) then PM me.

Yep, well I assume so - please let me know if you've tried this - I bought a similar spec'd machine (Lenovo TS140) to use as a workstation running Windows 10 and it was an excellent upgrade. The only (small) issue is that as it is designed as a server it won't sleep. Big plus for me as a developer was triple monitor support via onboard video card - no upgrade required. I added RAM and SSD and all is good.

Looks really tempting.
I'm thinking of replacing my old workstation with this. Tempted by the CPUs performance and TDP.
Could one of the owners confirm if the cooler can easily be upgraded to a tower one and so the PSU.
Would I see an improvement over an heavily overclocked i5 2500? I want to stick a basic low power GPU in as well (r285) for the odd game.

I securely wipe mine then sell in the local paper for decent money. I never sell tech on that well known bidding site as it's too risky for being ripped off.
And heat for me as with the cash back this is a cracking spec for the money.

these are probably a beefed up Celeron at this price so I would doubt it'd be any good for a gaming machine but it'd be a great home server

It's not a celeron, it's a full quad core part.

11 Jun 162#12
Gaming? The processor could cope, but as mentioned above, the PSU might struggle with a high performance video card.
The processor is not a beefed up Celeron, it's a quad core Xeon E3-1225V3, on a par with an i5 - 6600T according to CPU benchmark. It flies.

I agree, it's a true quad core, not a dual with hyper threading. It's also fairly power efficient when idle. An equivalent core-i5 CPU alone costs over £130?

Nice system, i added one ssd for system and three hdds as raid 0, runing Ubuntu 16.04 server headless. Perfect home server for plex, nas, bit torrenting, website hosting and MySQL db for my Raspberry pi sensors. As well as kvm running a few virtual machines for different services like pi-hole.
