Firstly this is a stonking deal.. But on a side note there is a wopping £110 Cashabck on a much more powerful Xeon box here same company:

http://www.serversplus.com/servers/tower_servers/dell_tower_servers/20-3708

Why buy this - Quad core Zeon is much more powerful and it comes with a 1tb drive as standard. Bargain says buy the pentium all day long, those wanting a little more will see alot of performance boost out of the Xeon and the 1tb drive is gravy sell for £40? you are going to have to buy a HDD anyway if you go the pentium route.. Just my two penneth - a Fine deal however OP

Does this G3220 version support RAID or is it just the Xeon version? If so, is RAID only supported in Linux / Windows Server 2012 R2, or would Win10 be able to take advantage of it too? Is this the same as "Storage Spaces" in the Control Panel? Many thanks.

I think it's disabled in the factory and no modified bios can help.

16 Jul 16 #162
Presumably it has been disabled in firmware (rather than physically inside the hardware), and therefore I'm guessing most likely via the BIOS. The standard BIOS might not offer a feature allowing a user to change this, but a modified BIOS might. Worth considering if it's important to you and you're feeling brave.
JShaw30
16 Jul 16 #161
Disabled somehow in hardware, so even with MEBx on, you cannot enable the AMT. There is even a sticker on the inside that shows the Management Engine (ME) has been disabled. Nothing in the Bios can overwrite this.

16 Jul 16 #160
Disabled how - in the BIOS?

16 Jul 16 #159
Great bit of kit, but if you want remote management (AMT), do not buy the Pentium T20. Even if you swap out the processor for one supporting vPro (E.g Xeon), AMT will not work – it has been factory disabled.

If you're up and running OK then I think you're good
I couldnt find anything that tells us exactly what differences there are but one dell page says:

Each ESXi image is a customization of the base VMware image of a particular version. Dell customization of the image includes:

Modifying files to identify Dell and Dell support.
Updating the ESXi image with the latest validated asynchronous drivers.
Updating patches if it addresses a common issue for Dell systems.

Just a note to look at the other threads for this great little server.
Many of the same questions (e.g. lack of audio over DP) have been discussed there, too:

This morning I happened to come across a website called bios-mods.com when googling about my Dell laptop's BIOS. The site appears to offer modified BIOS updates which can unlock BIOSes and reveal additional functionality. I haven't tried it myself, but anybody brave enough might be interested in applying a modified BIOS to one of these T20s to see if it will enable audio over DisplayPort.

If you choose to do so, you do so at your own risk 8-)

i don't know about adding audio to displayport, dell has the audio disabled in the bios and i'm not sure about a cable like you mention

i have a radeaon HD5450 in another pc that let's me run 2 screens at a time, so monitor for browsing and hdmi to tv via hdmi amp that gives 5.1 out (may do 7.1). this is one of the cheapest cards to do the job you want. the cards power is similar to the inbuilt graphics but for about £25 inc delivery you should be able to get a new card

alternately the R7 240 is about £45 delivered and it one of the most powerful cards the dell will take without a PSU upgrade, but it's a relatively low end card, but a bit more powerful than inbuild graphics. i was going to get one myself. at the moment i have an DP to HMDI adapter and it works on the tv and i can play the audio thru my amp via a soundcard, but i've go great need to hdmi output on the dell at the moment. it is a shame they disabled sound if it was possible to make it work

Just ordered one to hookup to my TV via home theatre. IS there a way to join the Displayport and 3.5 audio to an hdmi. The converter suggested earlier will not pass the audio with it.

The other way could be to put a simple graphics card with hdmi but not sure if that will include the audio. Can any expert help here please?

Your right - it appears there is no displayport audio passthrough configured in the bios.
Agharta

DP can definitely display audio but it's possible that in this case that it hasn't been wired for audio so worth double checking that. Dell may have omitted it as it's not required for servers generally.

Funny I have two displayport to hdmi cables. Both transmit audio. One is on a ts140 and the other on a deskpro 600 G1 SFF.One is linked to monitor with sound, the other linked to a tv. No external speakers or 3.5mm audio cables needed.

Has anybody used a hard drive greater than 2TB as the primary ? I realised the hard way that Windows does not recognise partitions greater than 2TB unless partitioned as GFT but then cannot install without using UEFI boot. However my USB bootable drive created using Rufus Tool is not being recognised during boot if I use UEFI boot instead of Legacy. Also can you connect a TV to the HDMI port at the back but the connectors seems to be different than a standard HDMI connector ?

I thought cats are intelligent - are you from Loughboro?

PC's and laptops dont have raid - hence its a server.

I suppose using your logic the following are also true.
1/ its made of aluminium so it must be an aircraft
2/ It has a plug so it must be a kettle
3/ It has a fan so it must be a aircon unit.

My buffalo LS441 16tb has a Marvell Armada 370 SoC which is worse than a atom processor - are you going to tell me thats its not a server or even a phone with such a crap processor??
Agharta
10 Jul 16 1 #134
So what features do you think the CPU lacks for entry-level server duties? You seem unwilling to answer this question.

Yeah, because people paying a net ~£79 for a small entry-level server PC are really being duped by marketing!
I’d say it’s the other way round in that people over paying for server hardware that is beyond their needs that are being duped by marketing.
Some people just want to run a basic small home server and don’t require features that office servers utilise.
For such people what do you think is lacking in this product?
If you have actual info that might benefit some rather than vague criticisms then please share.

9 Jul 16 #117
It can fit 4 3.5" drives. It has room for 2x2.5" or 1 ODD, but only has 4 sata connectors and 4 sata power connectors.

Jam240
9 Jul 16 #115
Yes it can be used as a normal PC. You will need to buy a hard drive to run the operating system on. If you don't have a spare Windows key then Ubuntu is a possible option.

As this tower has been designed as a server, you won't be able to put it in sleep or hiberation mode. Apart from this it will work as a normal PC.

Ooh, ooh, call the police, the Server Nazi has spoken.
A server is just a PC that is utilised in a certain way which often means running a server O/S which Dell support on this hardware.
The support is likely the main thing that differentiates it from a Dell desktop.
Of course you can buy far more feature rich servers with specialised hardware not seen on desktops but this is what is called entry-level.
This does actually have the Intel C226 chipset which is for servers and supports ECC RAM.

Out of band management is important on high end business / enterprise level kit so you have a backdoor in case the server (or any other type of kit - switches etc) are unresponsive - it lets you reboot remotely - even mount a CD from miles away to install Windows etc...

You would have to go onto a CPU Benchmark site to compare the raw power.

Depending on what you are planning, they each have bundles with some ram and hard disks. I tend to think that 4GB of ram, or a 250GB HDD are worthless and will just wind up in the bin, but they might suit your plans?

The current HP has a real ILO which is fantastic for out of band where the Dell is pretty poor. in a home setup though does anyone really care?

I was in the similar position as you, was looking for a NAS to do all my file and media serving, needed a 4 bay NAS and wanted a Synology because of their OS, unfortunately the price was £320+ for the enclosure only no HDD's and the specs were as good as this server.
Seeing this deal for £75 after cash back was a bargain, I'm running eSXi with xpenology VM and it is perfect use, not that much wattage,it is very similar if not loss power consumption to the Synology, and the upgrade-ability is there, where you can't on NAS only type.

My advice is to get this instead, only con of this is that you have to open case and mount the drives, not saying it is hard but don't expect to pop them in as you would do with a Synology, also Plex works but one or two streams 1080p.

There is some technical issue as the Dell is largely proprietary in set up and Win 7 simply won't run. You can install and all you'll get is a failure on start up.

As mentioned, load up Win 10 and use your Win 7 key which will (or should be) accepted.

Yes. I'm using my T20 that way and love it. Of course, you need to add all the things like keyboard, monitor, operating system... But I'm useless and managed it. To be fair, I went for the dearer Xeon model that comes with hdd
3.1415926 to samspud
30 Jun 16 1 #21
I also have a Xeon one doing just that but it is crippled a little on the graphics where you can only add a card which uses power from the board such as this http://www.techradar.com/reviews/pc-mac/pc-components/graphics-cards/nvidia-geforce-gtx-750-ti-1225593/review

Then you need an OS and you cannot back load Win 7 into this as it will not install, so my original route to Win 10 was thwarted. I went for a license key which worked, then sort of aroused suspicion some months later but was able o verify with the original Win 7 Pro key (original copy).

I got mine for around £150 net of cashback but dropped around £100 on a card and another £40 or so on a decent keyboard and mouse.

At the time it was a good cheap build but unless just surfing, I would go for something more PC dedicated.

The long answer is, it depends, but yes you could - although you should note it does not come with an Operating System, Display, Mouse or Keyboard ... so you'd need to bring your own.

Generally speaking "servers" have less graphics capability/grunt - but again it depends what you're aiming to do with it. I imagine it could serve as a great older child's first computer, or something to tinker with Linux on..

i'm using mine as a desktop pc as my old one broke. i stuck the SSD in, did a clean install from a downloaded ISO of win10x64 from the MS site, which runs without entering any keys (how long i don't know), i put in my old win7 key and it accepted it. i stuck in a couple of sata cards and added more drives from the old pc, mouse keyboard and monitor from before and it runs fine. SMB shares to my other pc and android boxes. it's very quiet too

I can tell you this if it is anything like my Lenovo TS140 and that has a Xeon CPU will run cheaper than the N54L, not sure about the other ones or the one you are referring too.

I could do with a cheap office server (5 staff) something as a file server and a domain controller?

This worth the punt?

Anyone suggest a cheap Windows OS for this one ? Can't justify spending more on Win Server 2012 than the server itself

what do the knowledgeable crowd think of this vs. the Gen8 microserver, apart from the cost. Cheapest Gen 8 after cashback is about 120-130 notes.
hmsq82 to cawsmawr
30 Jun 16 1 #51
Depends on the CPU for Gen8, but for price this is better, more options to upgrade not as small footprint as the G8 but not that big either smaller than the TS140. I was looking at getting a Synology with 4 bays cost without HDD was around £340 so this will do for this price.

I got one ages ago. Put an AMD R7 240 in it and use it as a HTPC> Great device.

Please note, the onboard displayport DOES NOT output sound.

I replaced an n40L was the xeon version of this server. I also had to get a sata card to put the OS drive in. Its alot quieter than the n40L. Also very impressed with its speed in comparison. I am running Open Media Vault on mine. with 2 x 120GB SSD in the top 1 for the OS and one for backup files and for my plex database. My main storage is 4 x WD red 3TB drives. I upgraded the ram as well buying a 16GB kit. so it has 20GB of RAM now. Brilliant replacment for the n40L.
Pasanda
30 Jun 16 #44
Word of warning, especially to those thinking of moving on from the Microservers, the T20 has only 4 SATA ports, whereas the Gen 7's and 8's have 5. The chap at serversplus swore blind it hand 5 and ended up having to supply a SATA expansion card and power expansion cable.

Other than that, considerably more powerful that the Gen7. Quieter too I think, not that the Gen7 was noisy in any way. It can play 1080p 5.1 streams on the server directly, which the Gen7 always struggled to do. Not essential, but can be handy to test media.

I paid for an extra 4Gb RAM, which was overpriced, but worth it.

to the person who asked what it's used for... I put all of my media on it. So films, audio, photos. It's runs my plex server, my squeezebox server, my teamviewer server, my PIA server and my torrent server (legal torrents only of course).
I have a 4TB, a 3TB, a 2TB, a 1TB HDD and a 240Gb SSD for the OS.
3guesses to Pasanda
30 Jun 16 #47
If it's running as a server, would it not be as well to put the OS on a USB stick (if that's possible) to free up a drive for further storage?
uni
30 Jun 16 #46
I'm still waiting on mine. I got confirmation on 8th june. I couldn't apply until 6th june, about 3 days after the 30 day waiting period. I noticed it said payment within 30 WORKING days but I had seen others say they get it about 30 days after it tracks. you have to wait 30 days from purchase date before you can claim, so I just stuck a note on the fridge. but It meant I got a pc for about £72. I had the monitor and keyboard etc and all the drives, I had one sata card that worked and the other was £20 (I had others but they wouldn't work with windows 10x64 due to being no drivers). the only minor gribble is the displayport doesn't output audio, so whilst I have hdmi adapters to the tv, theres no sound, but not a biggie
Plarkster
30 Jun 16 #45
@Pasanda what OS are you running?
OttovonPrimark
30 Jun 16 1 #43
I'm probably not the best person to ask. I'm not a massive fan of Plex. I prefer to browse across all my HDDs rather than make libraries. But Plex feeds some NowTV boxes (older and newer models) - none of which will work with Kodi or UMS. I also have a Plex app on my LG Smart TV but the LG's WebOS software is so clunky and horrible that the app is a pain to use.

A folder of 10-bit HEVC rips downloaded from a 'certain' place caused me real problems in both Plex and Kodi whatever I tried. But they appear to have caused problems for almost everyone who downloaded the files.

I concur and am looking into this, smbd itself causes 15-30% load transferring 70MB/s which is fine, so there's something else at work here. Imma look into it.

30 Jun 16 #34
Does anyone know if the DDR RAM it comes with is ECC? Thanks
uni to hmsq82
30 Jun 16 1 #39
I got the g3220 model and it was pc3-12800 ECC unbuffered 4gb single stick

so ECC=yes, buffered=no

I ordered ECC buffered by mistake and it didn't work at all. I've read that as long as it's unbuffered you can use non ECC and you can mix ECC and non ECC and it all works like non ECC

I am looking for a good deal on a 8gb stick as eventually i'll upgrade to 32gb RAM and upgrade the cpu later, some reasonable second hand i5 deals going

30 Jun 16 #38
I am running Ubuntu 14.04.4 on my N40L and shared out directories with FSTAB and that's how I connect to them through Windows. As Windows was able to read and write to them, I've assumed this is a CIFS share, do you concur? That is what I get Gigabit speeds reading from all day long.
CampGareth
30 Jun 16 #37
It might be specific to my situation in some way. The best explanation is I've eliminated everything else that could cause issues.

My N40L is running freenas, got 6 3.5" 2TB HDDs in there which are used in a RAIDZ2 array. I'm using an Intel pro 1000 card for dual gigabit ethernet ports. The box does nothing but act as a NAS since I have a separate box for plex etc. There are NFS and CIFS shares using that storage space. With NFS I can saturate gigabit ethernet (separate box to NAS) and with CIFS I can only get 60-70MB/s, apparently this is because it's single-threaded and sure enough when I'm using CIFS there's 50% load reported by freenas. Read not write, and all the drives are fine so it's not extra load from the raid array.

Seems they've removed NFS support from Windows 10 so it seems like the best option is to get more CPU power.

*edit* shame really, I've been looking at infiniband cards and they're mighty cheap but if CIFS needs plenty of CPU power for 1Gbit then I won't saturate 40 :P

How does transcoding perform in Plex on this puppy?
CampGareth
30 Jun 16 #27
Oh that's tempting, got an hp microserver N40L but it's due for replacement as CIFS is CPU bottlenecked so I only get 60-70MB/s over gigabit ethernet.

joshtbh to CampGareth
30 Jun 16 #33
Confused by this one Gareth. I'm using CIFS on my N40L and it saturates GbE, also why would a new machine mean this would improve if you perceive CIFS to be the bottleneck?

30 Jun 16 1 #26
Since I've joined HUKD I think this has been my best buy to date @ £70 (I've bought a lot of **** from here!!). I bought matching RAM http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/351679936698?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT (I know people say you can mix ECC with non ECC RAM) and added a Integral SSD for £25 for the OS. So total cost for an excellent day to day desktop PC/server for under £110, unbelievable good value.

Please forgive what may well be a moronic question here, but can I run any OS I choose on this "out of the box" (which at the moment will either be AntiX, Mint 13, or one of a number of flavours of Puppy Linux, depending on my mood, all installed on USB Flash or external hard drive) and use it as a home PC?

Just that I see Mr/Ms "Pi" at post #21 saying the machine won't take Windows 7 (not relevant to me, only have a copy of XP, and would want to fit an internal hard drive to install Windoze anyway), and the blurb on the Serverplus site specifies compatible OS's as Windows server 2012 or R2\nLinux RedHat.

Thanks in advance for any help.
