Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CS: GO) will expand upon the team-based action gameplay that it pioneered when it was launched 14 years ago.

CS: GO features new maps, characters, and weapons and delivers updated versions of the classic CS content (de_dust, etc.). In addition, CS: GO will introduce new gameplay modes, matchmaking, leader boards, and more.

"Counter-Strike took the gaming industry by surprise when the unlikely MOD became the most played online PC action game in the world almost immediately after its release in August 1999," said Doug Lombardi at Valve. "For the past 12 years, it has continued to be one of the most-played games in the world, headline competitive gaming tournaments and selling over 25 million units worldwide across the franchise. CS: GO promises to expand on CS' award-winning gameplay and deliver it to gamers on the PC as well as the next gen consoles and the Mac."

One of the most popular and entertaining online shooters of all time, well worth the normal price and a steal at 50% off, this is the lowest point it goes and often does so on big Steam sales, useful for a cheap copy or a 'smurf' ;)

I agree, CSGO is good but I have never liked the lack of any ADS. Stupidly accurate hip fire in CSGO doesn't feel realistic, though it's still a decent game. insurgency is just far more visceral, and the gun audio is awesome.

I was hoping to get the valve pack for £17 like it usually is in steam sales but they want £27 .. Not impressed with the sale tbh, I've been buying more keys from other stores that do sales than steam direct, that shouldn't be how it is. Also this is the same price as last years sale. Isn't it about time for a bit more of a drop yet?

Good game thats rewarding the more hours you put into it when i first started couldnt hit a barn door and thought people were cheating but with a bit of practice and some new razer products im now on my way up! You do get some whiners but what multiplayer doesnt you can just mute them. The competitive mode is the way to go 5v5 tense, strategic, action. Plus you could unlock a skin worth so many pounds making the game pay for itself \o/

We've played it at work at lunchtime as a sort of private competitive type server... Great fun.

Literally stabbed my boss in the back! Lol

Only recently came out to play it causally online and boy are some of the players annoying. Too many awp sniper boys and whiny kids. Thank god for the block communication option, I'd have given up by now otherwise.

Insurgency way better and more fun.
I used to play CS 1.6 -> CS:GO for years. No more!
Insurgency is harder but more rewarding. Good community there too.
Best game for the buck IMO. Insurgency 2 coming next year BTW.

Okay, so I'm pondering entering the world of pc gaming. I built my PC a couple of years ago but I'm not sure if it'll be up to gaming without a graphics card. I've had no need to overclock the Pentium G3258 cpu as yet, but read that it'll happily be cranked to 4.2-5.5GHz. 8gb of ram and Windows 10 Pro 64bit.

If the cpu will do the job with the aid of a graphics card, what do you guys recommend as a budget starter option? I'm happy to go used if it keeps the cost down.

You could pick up a 780ti or a 970 second hand for around £150.
DatAlbino
27 Jun 16 #26
It will not be up to gaming, unless what you wanna play is low res flash games and 5+ year old ones

That CPU isn't bad, but it is dual core and if you want even a budget PC, pick up a cheap i3 or i5 dude, your Pentium is 284th in the world for speed, which is pretty poor

You need a graphics card, simple as that, you can pick up an older, new 750ti or 780ti, which will allow mid-high gaming on medium settings mostly, or you can buy a 2nd hand gtx 900 series.

I would recommend buying something like a gtx 960 or 970 2nd hand, 4GB version of course, as since the gtx 1000 series coming out has made the prices plummet! (Paid £150 for my gtx 960 4GB black edition, its now £100-120 on eBay!) if you wanna build a budget PC, a 980 is a bit high imo, up to you tho.

So, yea, buy a cheap i3 or i5, and a 2nd hand graphics card, and please bear in mind that a 'budget gaming pc', if you want it to last more than a year and be useable, will still set you back by at least a few hundred. Its a PC, not a chocolate bar, I only have mid-high specs and mine cost me about 700 quid, all my savings ^^

[
I don't think I got my point across too well, judging by the suggestions so far - I'm looking at the possibility of trying out gaming - I certainly don't want to drop £150 on a graphics card straight off, nor will I entertain the idea of changing the cpu. If it's not going to be viable, then fine. I intend on spending my money on my upcoming trip back to India and up to Nepal, not on my pc. If there's a cheap way of getting it up and running, then I'll give it a go. If not I'll give it a miss.

And I know you get what you pay for, before I get inundated with comments! :smirk:

In which case, keep your Pentium and play flash games xD sorry bro, no dice without a graphics card and perhaps a better processor
crabby09
27 Jun 16 1 #29
Don't listen to DatAlbino... You could probably play GO without buying anything... It will look rubbish though! I've got a q6600 and a radeon 7850 and I'm still able to enjoy todays games, so you're probably looking at dropping around £70 on a gcard to get you going with reasonable settings.

Just don't expect the earth and be content with keeping options on the low side.

Here's a video of CS:GO on your CPU with a Nvidia Gefore 750ti: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hb21rGSj5Mo

Playing CSGO with graphics cranked up just makes it harder to see your target - drop everything low and get a better fps.

27 Jun 16 #34
Cheers! Any suggestions on a cheap card then? I'm not expecting the moon on a stick - if I can run a few games then that's all good. Not specifically this or the most recent games, just something to kill a few hours will suffice! If the quality isn't great then I think I'll survive - I've not got much to compare it to anyway!
crabby09
27 Jun 16 1 #35
As I am sure you can tell by my current hardware... I'm not up with the most recent chipsets etc!

I have found this: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/best-gpus,review-33382.html

Which indicates you'd do well with a GeForce GT 730. When buying MAKE SURE YOU KEEP THE CORRECT LETTERS AND NUMBERS... If you move away from the GT 730 I have no idea where you'll end up.

No idea if it's good value, but you can get a 2GB version here: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Gigabyte-GV-N730-2GI-GT730-Graphic-Card/dp/B00LHLB1WC/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1467041235&sr=8-2&keywords=gt+730

Don't go 1GB - you'll need at least 2GB for textures in more recent games.

I suggested a cheap 750ti or 780ti in the first place....

wolf, you didn't specify you wanted to play this game specifically, just that you were looking to make your PC gaming compatible, altho I probs should have put 2 and 2 together and realised you meant CSGO. Apologies

CS: GO Minimum Requirements:

Intel CPU: Dual-Core Pentium D @ 2.4GHz
AMD CPU: Dual-Core AMD Athlon 64 X2 @ 2.0GHz

RAM: 2 GB

NVidia GPU: NVidia GTX 200 or greater
AMD GPU: AMD HD4000 or greater

OS: Windows XP 32-bit (SP3)
DirectX: DirectX 9

HDD Space: 4GB

Those are some basic requirements, with which you should be able to hit 60fps on medium settings, its not a very demanding game and is very GPU light anyways as the graphics aren't off the chart good ^^

To run this, your CPU is fine but I would invest in a cheap, old gtx for £50-100 which will really make it possible to play proper games

I would look at the 750ti as a benchmark for a decent, cheap old graphics card, or like I said before, pick up a cheap 2nd hand gtx 960 4GB for about £100, the difference in performance is so much better

I have a 960 4GB and get 220+fps on CSGO, its worth the relatively small investment imo

960 is the lower end of Nvidia's 2nd best range, thats like saying it isn't worth buying a budget 144Hz monitor, you should always buy a £699 Predator! xD

Anything above 970 OCed, or 980, perhaps is overkill for current games, I get well over 60fps on every game maxed out and 200+ on less demanding games like CSGO, people are snobby about fps these days ^^
